Visit the restaurant for a special event and even though the restaurant was packed the serves was amazing. We order tacodillas was amazing and so was the jambalaya. The Tacodillas was served hot and perfectly seasoned. The Jambalaya was a little spicy but overall balance. The oyster were a little bit brine not the clean flavor that would have paired nice with the toppings, as well the aguachilli was very light. I hope they keep the Tamarind Besos cocktail on the menu, it so case tamarind with the sour that it is known for but overall balance cocktail. I would order again and again Overall, a stunning restaurant with amazing food and great serves.

Loved this dining experience. My first visit, I came for the tasting menu and it exceeded my expectations. I cant wait to try the the tasting menu for the next season. Next visit, I came and sat at the bar for happy hour. Another great experience. Excellent customer service, gorgeous decor, low key but upscale and classy vibe. The clarified cocktails are a MUST try. Can't wait to return for another visit.

We visited during Houston Restaurant week. Love the ion and all the businesses, so was excited to try this place out! Lots of parking provided by the ion; first 3 hours are free. We made a dinner reservation and were quickly seated. Option for still or tap water which is nice. Still water will be about $7/bottle and does not include refills. The staff who helped us were all super nice. The space itself is very modern and the seats were so comfortable! They provided a 3 pc course during HRW. Started off with gumbo and it was how we expect- it was warm and comforting and what you would expect gumbo to taste. As for the main entree, the braised short rib was a favorite. The meat pulled apart so quickly and the rice complemented it very well. The seafood plate was ok. The sauce was too overpowering for us which took away from the flavors. We had to take the seafood in a to go box. For dessert, I was a fan of the corn bread pudding. The bread was super soft and paired well with the ice cream. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the rice pudding brûlée, but that was just ok for me. The food itself was all good overall, but I think we would have experienced better ordering off of the regular menu next time.

Lovely experience at Late August!! I am so surprised it's not packed since it's on the Michelin Guide. Not many parties on a Friday night. Love the location and the parking lot! Service is outstanding. Complimentary champagne just because we were celebrating something was very kind! The space is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. I love the velvet chairs, it feels like you're dining in a nice sitting room or lounge area. Crispy octopus was perfectly cooked. Love that it comes with yucca. The sauces paired perfectly and the crispy chili oil topping gave it a slight but pleasant kick. The Texas redfish had a beautiful crispy skin and all the sauces paired nicely. So fun that it comes with a tamale with shrimp. The topping (tapenade) had olives in it- I'm not really a fan of olives but the flavor wasn't overwhelming at all. The cabrito stew was my favorite. The flavors were so pronounced and it is a perfect savory dish. The meat is tender and juicy and the tomatoes bring this brightness and acidity to cut through the richness of the meat. Such a comforting dish. Can't wait to try more things!

Having such an interest in The Ion in the former Sears Building, I anxiously watched Late August preparing to open. I love they incorporated the Sears catalog into their name. Part of the Lucille Hospitality Group, you can expect the same quality, attention to detail, artistic cuisine, and the flavor as their other concepts! Must order the salad that comes with those amazing croutons!! It's brioche bread simmered in butter for like 12 hours. The way it melts in your mouth is divine! The menu items I ordered did not disappoint, tasted perfect, the drinks are fresh, & the atmosphere is wonderful. They have a private room that can be as open or closed to the inside of The Ion (see pics with the curtain).

Located at the Ion building in south downtown. Parking is free for 0-3 hours at the adjacent parking lot. The interior is modern and fits the vibe that the building is going for. We got smoked drumettes (4/5, $13) and fried tomatillos (3.5/5, $18) for appetizers. They were presented well and the flavors were distinct. I ordered the fried chicken for the main; it was 4 pieces of fried chicken (4/5, $26) that were fried with a solid batter. Very traditional southern fried chicken batter that was crispy and the interior was moist thanks to the dark meat pieces. The lack of a side that should've come with the main dish was a bit of a letdown in my opinion. Overall, the food is solid, although I was hoping for a bit more on the appetizers. Good option for this area of town.

I had been wanting to visit this place for months and I'm so glad I finally did! It definitely lived up to my expectations with delicious food using high quality ingredients, friendly and attentive service, unique and delicious drinks, and a beautiful interior design. Seating was comfortable, and there's good lighting with the front wall being all windows. Couldn't ask for more. The menu changes seasonally and we visited in June. For small plates, we enjoyed the memelitas and grilled octopus. We also tried the Brussels sprouts and eggplant. Loved everything. The avocado sour was a unique and refreshing twist.

The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for--relaxed, stylish, and welcoming. The ambiance had a mature, sophisticated vibe that made it a perfect place to catch up over drinks and conversation. While I'm sure families and children are welcome, it definitely felt like a venue designed for adults looking to enjoy a quality dining and social experience. Not to mention, the food was delicious and worth every penny!!! Sorry I didn't record what I ate but the pics don't begin to describe the savory taste of the dinner!

After attending the Yelp event at the Ion, the restaurant that really stood out to me was Late August. The bites we sampled that day were fantastic. We tried to pop in near the end of the event, but the kitchen had already closed an hour before their listed closing time. No worries though, we ended up coming back on a Saturday night to give it a proper try. There is garage parking down the street. And the ambiance was not particularly memorable but pleasant enough. The main reason we returned was because we couldn't stop thinking about the squash and oysters we had tasted at the event. We ordered drinks, then our appetizer (oysters), and then dinner in that order. About 20 minutes later, our entrees arrived... but no oysters in sight. We waited another 15 minutes before they finally brought them out--even though that was the first thing we ordered. Then came the squash. When it arrived, half the pieces were perfectly roasted, and the other half were oddly crunchy. It felt like they may have mixed older roasted squash with some freshly cooked ones. We let the server know, and she informed the manager who relayed that the chef said he cooked them exactly the same way he did for the Yelp event. That response left me a little disappointed. I would've appreciated the chef taking some accountability or the manager coming by to speak with us directly. By the time the corrected squash made it back to our table, about 30 minutes had passed and we were already done eating. It felt awkward, especially for a side dish. Reviews for the dishes: Fried chicken 5/5- This is the best fried chicken I've ever had. We actually ordered the roasted chicken, but they brought out fried by mistake, and I'm so glad they did. Crispy, juicy, and paired perfectly with the greens. Squash (after correction) 5/5 -Sweet, roasted, and the pomegranate seeds on top took it to another level. Mole oysters 5/5- I've never been a fan of raw oysters, but these completely changed my mind. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly dressed. Service definitely needs improvement. I came in with high hopes, and while the food was great, the overall experience just didn't match.

Half Fried chicken-$26. Huge portion! No sides, yall. Super crispy skin, juicy white meat!

I want to send a huuuugggeeee shout out to the manager, Danny and our waitress, Talli! I had spent 4 hours on the road to spend vday with...well...you know who you are... Anywho, I was a wreck, stressed, and hangry! We arrived 25 minutes AFTER the start of our resy, but they still had a table for us-- win! The restaurant was much smaller than I imagined, but cozy ! They offered a limited menu for the special day! The whole fish, the entree I had been eyeing for weeks, was NOT offered. The waitress saw my disappointment then immediately ran to the kitchen. Danny appeared with a smile, expressed sorrow that I was from Dallas (hehe) then told me they would make an exception and prepare my fish Escovitch! I was elated! The drinks were satisfying, would've enjoyed a little more alcohol-- not a real complaint. The fry bread is a must!!! I wish it came with a dipping sauce. You must get the smoked wings. Smoked and fried is a fantastic combo that restaurants should replicate more! Fried chicken is hugggeeee! Definitely enough for 2 people. Order a side because it's a la carte! The star of the show....my fish was everything I knew it was going to be! Fresh! Crispy! Not overpowered with salt . The vegetables with it were a perfect pairing! The cilantro provided freshness! Late August made this lady so incredibly happy. I'd go every week if I could.....these pockets won't allow it. Thank you for being awesome and going the extra mile. Other restaurants...take note!

So I finally visited Late August. Let me start by acknowledging it is a beautiful restaurant. When you walk in although it is a smaller space they utilize it beautifully. Come on Michelin star restaurant I see you! We were promptly greeted when we entered the restaurant and seated by the chefs view table an area where you get to see the food prepared amazing. Secondly shoutout to our awesome waiter! Tali I believe she was excellent! And even recommended this fabulous drink that was a 10. I ordered the fried bread and hummus spectacular! You can tell it's fresh made to order! And that fried bread omg so good! I also ordered the yuca/plantain chips which was seasoned with a cajun like salt tasty. For my main dish I ordered the Seared market fish. It was cooked to perfection and topped with like a ground olive cavier. The contrast of flavors was amazing! Additional shoutout to our waitress again who suggested a dessert wine that I tried and loved! This is coming from a person who does not like wine. Anyway I had an amazing time, the food was excellent and I will definitely be back!

I had the pleasure of sampling a few "Small Shares" from Late August's dinner menu. My visit was an unplanned event while visiting The Ion. The staff were very friendly and accommodating allowing us to pop in without a reservation and sit at the bar. The bartenders were experienced and did an outstanding job with their creative cocktails. I ordered the Gumbo followed by the Fried Octopus. Both dishes were very good but my expectations were high based upon recent awards Late August had received. The Gumbo was hearty but could have had a more robust flavor for me. The Fried Octopus had excellent flavor but slightly tough to chew. Of course, I didn't leave a drop in my bowl or on my plate because the food was very good. I'm looking forward to my next visit so I can be seated in the dining room and try dinner entrees.

Chicken & Plantain Waffles
Morgan W.

Late August is a cute modern space. The menu is very unique and very tasty. And the drinks are good and strong. My friend and I ordered two brunch plates and split them. We had the chicken and plantain waffles, and the grit cake benedict. I really enjoyed the chicken and waffles, with the mango sauce and a hint of something spicy. The Benedict was good but I didn't enjoy the meat on that as much. I can't remember what kind it was. The restaurant is in a cool spot inside the Ion and there's a space that you could use to work remotely, if you wanted to do a week day lunch at Late August. There's a parking lot that's free for a certain timeframe (2 hours), street parking and a garage across the street (paid). Good for lunch, brunch and date night.

Came here to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and it was the perfect spot !…read more Food: The menu had a lot more options than I expected and everything looked delicious. I never order tacos, but I ordered them here and they were probably the best tacos I've ever had (filling, flavorful, and not too much food). They also had an extensive drink menu. I wasn't drinking but if I was there were some great options Parking: The parking was challenging. There was street parking but I was coming with a baby so unloading the stroller on the street was a no for me. There was a garage and supposedly valet parking. I couldn't find the valet anywhere in the block so I just went to the garage. It was $7 for 2 hours Service: Our server was great! It seemed like she was the only one and the place was packed ! Seating: There were 2 tops, 4 tops, and booths. They also had high chairs. They did let us pull the stroller up to a table for my little guy to sit . The space is larger than expected and was packed the entire time. They also have a large patio but none of their fans weee working Other: They have 1 unisex restroom. Luckily it was large as I had to bring my stroller in to use it as a changing table since they didn't have one. The challenging part was the door wouldn't fully open so I had to really push it to get it open far enough to get the stroller in

Great service, delicious food, high quality ingredients!…read more Our server was incredibly attentive to us without having to appear every ten minutes to interrupt our conversation. When you first walk in, the interior is dimly lit, warm, and welcoming. The arugula salad appetizer was the perfect balance of light and flavorful with a good peppery kick from the fresh arugula. The Nancy cakes were simple but comforting, and with the roe made it an incredible experience. We also tried the lamb tartare and the burger, and both blew our minds away. Just the quality of the ingredients spoke for themselves. The flavor was perfectly balanced, and I was very impressed by the consistency of all the dishes. Highly recommend!

I was actually pleasantly surprised, it was spacious, shaded, and really comfortable. We started with the Nancy Cakes, which are always a 10/10 and easily the highlight of the meal. We also tried the yellowtail aguachile with roasted poblano and sunflower seed za'atar, which was just okay--nothing particularly memorable. For my entrée, I ordered the burger and specifically asked for the aioli on the side. Unfortunately, it came on the burger, and there was so much of it that it completely overpowered everything else. Coming back after a few years, we were hoping to be reminded why this place is so popular, but overall we left a little underwhelmed. I'm not sure we'd go out of our way to snag a reservation again.

Maybe I'm trying to…read morekeep it a secret (insert shushing emoji) This place is my favorite steakhouse in all of Houston. They cook the steaks to perfection every single time. For appetizers, I highly recommend the yellowtail sashimi. I'm sorry I didn't post a picture - I was SO hungry. I literally ate it like candy. Speaking of candy, it has Pop Rocks on top of the yellowtail. See how I tied that in, kids? My friends (also Yelp Elite) and I decided to do everything family-style. Since it's Restaurant Week (really Restaurant Month), we ordered a bunch of appetizers. The blue crab hush puppies were my second favorite. I wasn't a huge fan of the heirloom tomato because the wheat bread was way too thick for my liking. I would have preferred sourdough. But let's be honest - the reason I come here is for the mac & cheese and steak. I got the steak flight, which is about $110, but it's worth every penny. The Wagyu literally cuts like butter. The sides are HUGE and easily shareable with four people, so keep that in mind when ordering. Unfortunately, my friend did not enjoy his swordfish. His exact words were, "It tastes like dried chicken." My wife ordered the salad and absolutely loved it. Once again, the portion was enormous. If I'm judging this place solely on the wine, steaks, sides, and atmosphere, it's an easy five stars. You just have to know what to order. I was definitely disappointed to hear about the fish, but everything else keeps bringing me back.

I was quickly escorted to my table, and I later noticed that the restaurant also has some private dining areas, which I thought was a nice touch. One thing I found a little unusual was that you have to walk through the kitchen to get to the restroom. The staff does announce when someone is walking through the kitchen, so it felt safe, but it was still a little unexpected. For dinner, I tried one of the specials that evening: an 8-ounce steak served with asparagus and potatoes. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were nice and crispy around the edges. The steak could have used a little more seasoning, but it was still flavorful overall. My boyfriend ordered the redfish, which was a very generous portion and seasoned really well. However, the crab fries that came with it were very bland and definitely could have used more flavor. I ordered a blackberry margarita, and it was absolutely amazing! Definitely one of my favorite parts of the meal. For dessert, we ordered the Snickers ice cream. It seemed more like an ice cream sandwich with peanuts on top and chocolate on the side. It wasn't my favorite dessert, but it was still a nice sweet treat if you're someone who likes to finish dinner with dessert. Our bill was around $180 for two meals, dessert and two drinks. Overall, I really enjoyed the ambiance, the service was quick, and most of the food was good. There were a few things that could have been better, particularly the seasoning on the steak and crab fries and the dessert, but I would still consider coming back.

I was finally able to try this Houston staple last weekend!…read more Food: 4.5/5 - I loved the tomato toast and warm broth the best! The tomato toast was not overhyped and definitely worth getting. The bread is nice and oily yet still crusty and crunchy. The tomatoes and greens on top paired perfectly with the sourdough. - The warm broth doesn't seem like much from pictures and description but it was just so comforting and had nice umami. The green onions really bring out the rest of the flavors. - Ratatouille: this was one of our server's recommendations. I thought it was pretty good but slightly too sour/over-pickled for me. (I'm also not a big pickle person) - Butternut squash: This was probably the next best dish after the toast and broth. All the flavors and texture were there except the squash was a little hard. It could've been cooked a little longer to make it easier to cut through. I guess it is out of season, but still. - Squab aka pigeon: Also pretty good. The dried raspberries actually pair very well with it. Ambiance: 4/5 - The space is extremely small so you really need reservations. - It's so small that the tables are quite close together. But they were also not evenly spaced out so we tried to move our table away from the people next to us (we were practically touching!) and the staff insisted that we don't move them because they need to access the cutlery in the drawer on the side of the table?? First of all, they could've still accessed it after we moved the table. Second, if the space is that tiny, why not just store the utensils elsewhere? Very odd and didn't like that vibe.
