This was my second visit, and it has officially cemented itself as one of my favorite spots. My first experience was a business dinner where we sampled a variety of à la carte items, but for this second visit as an early Valentine's celebration, we decided to go all-in on the 9-course tasting menu with wine pairings. What sets this place apart is the flavor and intentionality. Knowing the ingredients are sourced directly from their own farm makes every seasonal dish feel incredibly fresh and purposeful. The Wine Pairing (The Hidden Gem): The wine program here is criminally underappreciated. The standout for me was a Mexican sparkling wine I had never encountered before. As a huge fan of Spanish Cavas, I was blown away--it possessed the crispness I love in a Cava but carried the elegant, creamy notes and "fine bubble" style of a French Crémant. It was a sophisticated discovery that perfectly complemented the meal. From the first course to the final pairing, the experience was phenomenal. This is the second time I've been to Late August and it was great both times! Everything tastes so fresh and you can tell is so thoughtfully prepared with attention to how every bite looks and tastes. It's a true foodie's restaurant! The menu is always changing, so this time we got their fried bread, Philly hand pies, rib tacos, gumbo, fried chicken and chorizo smash burger. Every single items was wonderful - I mean it! We'd had their fried bread and fried chicken before, so we knew what to expect, but still love them. Probably the biggest hit with our group was the hand pies (we ended up getting a second order), but the chorizo smash burger was also incredible and super unique. They were kind enough to end our meal with two complimentary servings of the red velvet tres leche, as well! What a gem of a restaurant from ambiance to service to food. I stopped by here for a quick bite during this happy hour. I got the Philly handpies, rib taco, and I believe the drink was elephant & flowers. All of them were 10/10 and very filling. Now I'm ready to give Lucille's a second chance after coming here and meeting Chef Chris. Impeccable service started at the door. Literally the second we walked in. Melissa, who I later found out is the GM, is great and really cares about your experience as well as the restaurant itself. The restaurant is beautiful and perfect for a date night. The whole menu featured incredible flavors and dishes you'll think about long after the taste fades. They source local ingredients from their 1913 "conscious community collective". Chef Sergio and Chef Chris are really great chefs and I'm sure they will have a ton of continued success. I appreciate them stopping by the table and having a little fun with us and really describing their food, their initiative and their passion for Late August. Our server Nicki was great all night as well. Service was seamless and enjoyable. I can see why Late August is Michelin recommended but based on my experience, they deserve a star. Visit the restaurant for a special event and even though the restaurant was packed the serves was amazing. We order tacodillas was amazing and so was the jambalaya. The Tacodillas was served hot and perfectly seasoned. The Jambalaya was a little spicy but overall balance. The oyster were a little bit brine not the clean flavor that would have paired nice with the toppings, as well the aguachilli was very light. I hope they keep the Tamarind Besos cocktail on the menu, it so case tamarind with the sour that it is known for but overall balance cocktail. We visited during Houston Restaurant week. Love the ion and all the businesses, so was excited to try this place out! Lots of parking provided by the ion; first 3 hours are free. We made a dinner reservation and were quickly seated. Option for still or tap water which is nice. Still water will be about $7/bottle and does not include refills. The staff who helped us were all super nice. The space itself is very modern and the seats were so comfortable! They provided a 3 pc course during HRW. Started off with gumbo and it was how we expect- it was warm and comforting and what you would expect gumbo to taste. As for the main entree, the braised short rib was a favorite. The meat pulled apart so quickly and the rice complemented it very well. The seafood plate was ok. The sauce was too overpowering for us which took away from the flavors. We had to take the seafood in a to go box. For dessert, I was a fan of the corn bread pudding. The bread was super soft and paired well with the ice cream. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the rice pudding brûlée, but that was just ok for me. The food itself was all good overall, but I think we would have experienced better ordering off of the regular menu next time. read more

Lovely experience at Late August!! I am so surprised it's not packed since it's on the Michelin Guide. Not many parties on a Friday night. Love the location and the parking lot! Service is outstanding. Complimentary champagne just because we were celebrating something was very kind! The space is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. I love the velvet chairs, it feels like you're dining in a nice sitting room or lounge area. Crispy octopus was perfectly cooked. Love that it comes with yucca. The sauces paired perfectly and the crispy chili oil topping gave it a slight but pleasant kick. The Texas redfish had a beautiful crispy skin and all the sauces paired nicely. So fun that it comes with a tamale with shrimp. The topping (tapenade) had olives in it- I'm not really a fan of olives but the flavor wasn't overwhelming at all. The cabrito stew was my favorite. The flavors were so pronounced and it is a perfect savory dish. The meat is tender and juicy and the tomatoes bring this brightness and acidity to cut through the richness of the meat. Having such an interest in The Ion in the former Sears Building, I anxiously watched Late August preparing to open. I love they incorporated the Sears catalog into their name. Part of the Lucille Hospitality Group, you can expect the same quality, attention to detail, artistic cuisine, and the flavor as their other concepts! We got smoked drumettes (4/5, $13) and fried tomatillos (3.5/5, $18) for appetizers. They were presented well and the flavors were distinct. I ordered the fried chicken for the main; it was 4 pieces of fried chicken (4/5, $26) that were fried with a solid batter. Very traditional southern fried chicken batter that was crispy and the interior was moist thanks to the dark meat pieces. The lack of a side that should've come with the main dish was a bit of a letdown in my opinion. Overall, the food is solid, although I was hoping for a bit more on the appetizers. I had been wanting to visit this place for months and I'm so glad I finally did! It definitely lived up to my expectations with delicious food using high quality ingredients, friendly and attentive service, unique and delicious drinks, and a beautiful interior design. After attending the Yelp event at the Ion, the restaurant that really stood out to me was Late August. The bites we sampled that day were fantastic. We tried to pop in near the end of the event, but the kitchen had already closed an hour before their listed closing time. No worries though, we ended up coming back on a Saturday night to give it a proper try. There is garage parking down the street. And the ambiance was not particularly memorable but pleasant enough. The main reason we returned was because we couldn't stop thinking about the squash and oysters we had tasted at the event. We ordered drinks, then our appetizer (oysters), and then dinner in that order. About 20 minutes later, our entrees arrived... but no oysters in sight. We waited another 15 minutes before they finally brought them out--even though that was the first thing we ordered. Then came the squash. When it arrived, half the pieces were perfectly roasted, and the other half were oddly crunchy. It felt like they may have mixed older roasted squash with some freshly cooked ones. We let the server know, and she informed the manager who relayed that the chef said he cooked them exactly the same way he did for the Yelp event. That response left me a little disappointed. I would've appreciated the chef taking some accountability or the manager coming by to speak with us directly. By the time the corrected squash made it back to our table, about 30 minutes had passed and we were already done eating. It felt awkward, especially for a side dish. Reviews for the dishes: Fried chicken 5/5- This is the best fried chicken I've ever had. We actually ordered the roasted chicken, but they brought out fried by mistake, and I'm so glad they did. Crispy, juicy, and paired perfectly with the greens. Squash (after correction) 5/5 -Sweet, roasted, and the pomegranate seeds on top took it to another level. Mole oysters 5/5- I've never been a fan of raw oysters, but these completely changed my mind. Rich, flavorful, and perfectly dressed. Service definitely needs improvement. They offered a limited menu for the special day! The whole fish, the entree I had been eyeing for weeks, was NOT offered. The waitress saw my disappointment then immediately ran to the kitchen. Danny appeared with a smile, expressed sorrow that I was from Dallas (hehe) then told me they would make an exception and prepare my fish Escovitch! I was elated! The drinks were satisfying, would've enjoyed a little more alcohol-- not a real complaint. The fry bread is a must!!! I wish it came with a dipping sauce. You must get the smoked wings. Smoked and fried is a fantastic combo that restaurants should replicate more! Fried chicken is hugggeeee! Definitely enough for 2 people. Order a side because it's a la carte! So I finally visited Late August. Let me start by acknowledging it is a beautiful restaurant. When you walk in although it is a smaller space they utilize it beautifully. Come on Michelin star restaurant I see you! We were promptly greeted when we entered the restaurant and seated by the chefs view table an area where you get to see the food prepared amazing. Secondly shoutout to our awesome waiter! Tali I believe she was excellent! And even recommended this fabulous drink that was a 10. I ordered the fried bread and hummus spectacular! You can tell it's fresh made to order! And that fried bread omg so good! I also ordered the yuca/plantain chips which was seasoned with a cajun like salt tasty. For my main dish I ordered the Seared market fish. It was cooked to perfection and topped with like a ground olive cavier. The contrast of flavors was amazing! I had the pleasure of sampling a few "Small Shares" from Late August's dinner menu. My visit was an unplanned event while visiting The Ion. The staff were very friendly and accommodating allowing us to pop in without a reservation and sit at the bar. The bartenders were experienced and did an outstanding job with their creative cocktails. I ordered the Gumbo followed by the Fried Octopus. Both dishes were very good but my expectations were high based upon recent awards Late August had received. The Gumbo was hearty but could have had a more robust flavor for me. The Fried Octopus had excellent flavor but slightly tough to chew. Of course, I didn't leave a drop in my bowl or on my plate because the food was very good. Late August is a cute modern space. The menu is very unique and very tasty. And the drinks are good and strong. My friend and I ordered two brunch plates and split them. We had the chicken and plantain waffles, and the grit cake benedict. I really enjoyed the chicken and waffles, with the mango sauce and a hint of something spicy. The Benedict was good but I didn't enjoy the meat on that as much. I can't remember what kind it was. The restaurant is in a cool spot inside the Ion and there's a space that you could use to work remotely, if you wanted to do a week day lunch at Late August. There's a parking lot that's free for a certain timeframe (2 hours), street parking and a garage across the street (paid). Good for lunch, brunch and date night. read more

Congrats to Late August on Esquire naming this Houston Afro-Mex eatery on best new restaurant list. And a Michillin recommended restaurant, wow. Owner/Chef Chris Williams, and Executice Chef Sergio Hidalgo have recently opened Late August, in the Ion District (the old Sears). I don't know much about Ion, but it seems nice, worth checking out. Parking - we parked on the street, for free after 6p per the meter. There is a parking lot right out front, but unsure if there is a cost to pull a ticket, or if it's validated at the restaurant, but there was a security arm to get into the lot. I should have asked the staff? I didn't know so I didn't chance it. Service - was great, we didnt have a resy, but place only had a few guests on Wednesday eveninf, we were easily able to be seated. General Manager (and part owner) Daniel Davis, spent time at our table. And really talked with us to provide great customer experience. Our server Nicolas - was attentive and full of info on the menu. Another staff member Paula also visited our table frequently to check on us, and make sure we had everything we needed. We shut the place down and stayed past kitchen closing, but still felt welcomed. Food - for starters I ordered the crispy octopus. I enjoyed this dish, especially with the sauce/plantains. My friend ordered the gumbo. I think it's more inspirational gumbo, in that there isn't any seafood in it. But it does have shrimp rue. We decided to keep it a lighter dinner and ordered the Texas Cesar as our main, not bad. Overall solid place, that I plan to check out again to try more dishes. read more

The development here at the Ion is pretty remarkable, and Late August has one of the premium spots inside. The elder millennial interior design trend is in full swing here, lots of earthy and wood tones with a modern twist feel quite familiar now in the Houston restaurant scene. It compliments and transitions into seamlessly with the larger building and joint businesses. The food is a mix of elevated Latin cuisines and Southern influences, with the menu being supplied with a farm to table co-op. So the food really has a deliberate feel to it, meaningful presentation and flavor combinations that don't overwhelm with spice or sweet. The brussel sprouts and memelitas and a fun combination of salsas and mouth feels. The chile relleno wasn't traditional, I did miss the light batter fry on the outside, but the filling was wonderful and a nice option for GF option. Loved the Navajo donuts for dessert, absolutely worth the splurge at the end. Great selection of cocktails and wines on their drink menu, we had a tangy and bubbly lil mocktail on the work lunch. Small lunch menu peaked my curiosity for the food, but I didn't feel like it gave me a true sense for what is offered here. Dinner might be a better option for a visit. read more

Stopped by Late August for lunch on a Thursday on a whim and was able to try their Houston Restaurant Weeks lunch menu! Upon walking in, immediately I was greeted. I opted to sit outside since it was such a beautiful day. Byron and Tariq were my servers. Late August is an Afro-Mexican restaurant and is a fusion of Chefs Chris Williams and Sergio Hidalgo culinary journeys. I had the Texas Caesar salad and the Cabrito Stew! Both were delicious! A must visit in Houston! Late August did not disappoint. The first thing that blew me away was the toasted coconut Mojito because, who does that? I was intrigued so I tried it and it was so good that I had to get another. The service was top-tier many different members of the staff stopped by our table to make sure we were okay and give us recommendations on their favorites from the menu. Randomly, I really loved their brussels sprouts. Different than how a lot of restaurants do it because it had more of a citrus forward. Late August is one of the restaurants that opened up in the late Sears building downtown; rebuilt to the now ion building, it houses businesses and some new restaurants! Complimentary valet parking only, as street parking in downtown in this area might be a lil sketchy or hard to come by. The restaurant is minimalistic but works for a pretty chill vibe. We were greeted by one of the GMs and went with the dishes he recommended. Sounds like the produce is grown on their farm and comes fresh farm to table! The dishes had many flavor profiles and did not disappoint in terms of flavors and vibrant fresh colors. - Citrus Pork Confit Very very tasty pulled pork on a field greens maso and a piri piri sauce. Easily a favorite of the night. Delicious! 5/5 - Field Pea Hummus Nice and thick flavorful hummus with chorizo and chapulines! The first time I've had fried grasshoppers! Added a little earthy crunch to the dish! That Lucille's fry bread it comes with was delish to dip with the hummus! 4/5 - Chili Relleno Poblano pepper covered in cheese, avocado cream, creole sauce and red rice. The sauce tasted like a mole and that chili had a bit of heat! Good flavors if you like a nice mole! 4/5 - Cabrito Stew Such tender cabrito (young goat) and so amazing flavors! Packed with farm veggies and collard rice! I could eat this as a meal on its own. Such comfort in a dish! Easily another favorite of the night 5/5 - Tomato Salad Watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, cucumber, Avocadoes, toasted sesame and a nice tangy suyo dressing! Dish was a bit small but the dish was refreshing! 3/5 - Octopus Shrimp Chorizo, Yucca, Romesco and Corn.. I was a bit underwhelmed by this dish.. octopus was cooked well but there was a small amount of it when mixed with the other things. Nothing stood out in terms of flavor profile. 2/5 - Half Rack Achiote BBQ Sauce, avocado cream, picked red onions and some tortillas! This sauce was even more mole like and the meat wasn't as tender as I'd like. I think this was the least favorite dish of the night, for my taste.. my companions liked it enough, especially if you like a good mole! 2/5 - Smoked Chicken Drumettes Mole, chicken cracklings.. good sauce with the chicken. Again a mole sauce but I liked the crispy chicken skin. The chicken could've been a bit less dry but it wasn't overly dry as well. Enjoyed it. 3/5 Overall, I think Chef Chris Williams and Sergio Hidalgo are creating some amazing dishes here and I enjoyed my experience and meal very much! We came here for date night and booked well in advance after learning about Late August through a search on local food websites. We've patronized Lucille's and Rado Market so this was left on our food bucket list. I'm glad we stopped in. We visited on a Friday evening and almost every table if not every table was full but it didn't feel crowded in the space because of the design and how open it was. I should also say I loved the green decor and it balanced well and didn't feel overwhelming or too dark inside. For our starter we tried the crudo, which was light and had a distinct but not bitter flavor. To the dismay of our server we both ordered the fried chicken but that's because we were hungry and couldn't risk not getting enough food. The chicken was juicy but it did have a lot of breading, most of which I didn't eat because I was focused on getting pure protein. I also ordered the red rice and beans and that was the star of the night. I would probably return and just have two servings of that in fact. The potatoes were seasoned well, I had a taste but not too much due to my nightshade allergy. They serve nonalcoholic drinks and I enjoyed my Coco Mojo Mojito which had limited mint. My companion enjoyed the Highway 288. We finished the night with doughnuts-I thought we needed to try them. They didn't leave a lasting impression so I think if the other options aren't of interest, let your stomach savor dinner. read more

Had our Friendsgiving dinner here tonight. The restaurant is in a new area at Main & Wheeler with a large parking lot that is free under 3 hours, including complimentary valet. It's well lit, and I felt very safe there. The restaurant itself is well appointed, and the service is excellent. The menu and even origins of the owner and menu items was explained in an entertaining fashion and the service while exemplary was not intrusive, which is a hard balance to strike. Two of us began the meal with the gumbo, while another had the shrimp meatballs in a consommé. We all enjoyed our selections and portions were quite healthy. Entrees included the Chili Relleno, Half Fried Chicken with hot sauce, and the LA BBQ Seafood. All were delicious and those healthy portions sent us all home with leftovers for lunch the next day. The kitchen was closed, but they still made us the Navajo doughnuts! They now will serve brunch on Saturday from 11am-3pm. Please give them a try. It was an exceptional experience. read more

I enjoyed my experience at this restaurant and would give 3.5 stars for the hospitality of the waiter and owner. We had an issue with temperature of the food and without question they re-made the dish. It's a small place but it felt cozy and not squished. The highlight of my meal was the pork confit. It was so flavorful and I would return just for this. The drinks were on the sweeter side, so if that's not your thing request it to be less sweet. My friend had the Chile relleno and said it was good. She also enjoyed the ribs. I had the LA bbq seafood. It was decent but there is inconsistency with the dish as one of my friends raved about it and upon ordering this time felt it fell short. All in all, I would definitely go back. Came to grab light bites before going to an event. Happy Hour here is a MUST!!! The ambiance is amazing with the green walls and decor. I ended up getting the Chicken Wings and Iberico Rib Tacos. The chicken wings were fried perfectly and reminding me of wings from the Caribbean. I really enjoyed them and don't forget to get the dipping sauce (FYI they have no ranch or blue cheese for wing). The Rib Taco was great as well. It's a unique taste but the meat is very tender and flavorful. The star of the show is The Rado...if you love well balanced drinks you will enjoy this. Everything on the menu is fantastic. So far my favorites are the citrus port confit, field pea hummus, roasted brussels sprouts and the tomato suya salad. All the food here is on the healthy side (yet very tasty!!) and carefully crafted. The service is amazing - very sweet and kind and attentive. Last I definitely want to say that the restaurant may be small, but it is very pretty and looks luxurious! Definitely aesthetically, appealing as well as the food!
