Unfortunately the one thing I was looking forward to, wasn't really good. Rice was previously cooked, then cooked the seafood in it. This overcooked all the seafood and the rice was mushy. This restaurant gets pretty busy. We were walking around looking for a place to eat. Since we come from Miami, we really didn't want Cuban food. But we had our dog w/us and some restaurants were not dog friendly even in their outside patio. The Mexican restaurant told us to go to Las Palmas. We were seated but waited a while and then we were attended by MISAEL, the manager! He apologized for the wait and even gave us a free desert. Since I ordered the mofongo it took a bit longer. Let's start off with the reason we went here. My roommate and I were walking around Mount Dora all day and kept smelling pork cooking, after investigation we determined it was Las Palmas. We walked by and saw a crowd and figured it must be good. When we were finally hungry we came back and were seated. The waiter came up and asked for our drink orders to which we asked to start with some water as we had just sat down and hadn't even had a chance to look at the drink menu yet. I'm indecisive and didn't know what to order so he gave me some recommendations on what was good. He came back to take our order and I ended up going with the garlic shrimp, which he recommended and my roommate got the pork tamales. While we waited we were given 4 measly pieces of bread to dip in their sauces, which were actually quite good. We got our food rather quickly which surprised me. The portions were very big and for the price they should be that big. This is where it started going down hill. My food was very bland and my shrimp were sitting in a literal bowl grease. There was no salt on them what so ever and after eating them I'm pretty sure they were undercooked. My roomate's dish had the opposite problem and was wayyyyy to salty. She drank both her glass and my glass of water. We were never offered refills on our waters we had to ask for them and even then only one of our glasses was filled. Nor were we ever asked if we wanted to order any drinks besides water. I ate about 5 shrimp and most of one of my sides but that's all I could stomach as it just wasn't very good. We sat there waiting to be checked on for 15 minuets, we eventually had to flag a waiter down and ask for boxes and the check which then took another 10 min to show up. When we eventually did pay we decided we were only going to leave a 15% tip as we were not overly impressed with the service, we however were forced to leave an 18% tip thanks the the computer system they use. This wasn't a big problem but still concerning that you cant pick how much to tip your weight staff if you receive less than outstanding service. We pay, pack up our food and head out to walk about the town. We walked down to the lake about 20 min after visiting the restaurant and both of us start getting the sweats and complaining that our stomachs hurt. Which is unusual for me because I have an iron stomach. We start walking back to town and start sweating even more, and not from climbing Mount Dora, the hot flashes continue and we decide to head back to the car and head home. We made it back to the car and grab a can of sparkling water from the trunk to see if they will settle our stomachs. We leave the windows down as we both, especially me feel like we are going to hurl. After the two hour drive home we are both convinced that we, especially me have food poisoning. I don't want to even think about eating my leftovers from this place and I probably will never go back. In addition to the poor service the waiter was trying to flirt with me the entire time which was not appropriate in any way, I could give 2 shits if your trying to get a larger tip, if he wanted a bigger tip he should have provided better service. And I'm now convinced it was the shrimp that gave me food poisoning as my roommate also tried them and agreed that the were more than disappointing. The worse Margaritas that I have ever had. The food was ok. Service was decent. Place look great. I would go almost anywhere else though. I won't return because if they don't bother to taste their drink mixes that are on special and burn their fajitas then why bother. Pretty good Cuban sandwiches. Sides were pretty greasy, onion rings etc. My son had the Fricase de Pollo which did not like. The chicken was dry and without the vibrant taste expected of that dish. The primary reason for my low rating was the service. Most of my meal was without refills. My wife initially ordered a soft drink and then changed to an unsweetened tea. They charged her for a second drink at $2.50 instead considering it a refill. Overall there are better places to eat in Mount Dora in both quality and service. First time to this Cuban restaurant in picturest downtown Mount Dora. Maybe the last... still digesting our experience. Let me start by saying it was Easter Sunday and the place was packed for lunch... even when we got there at 1pm. By the time we left, after 3pm, the place still had people lined up outside. Not sure what happened, but allot of things went not according to plan. We waited over 45 minutes for our food. I get it, it's packed. But, someone must have had the tickets order jumbled because we got served after tables that sat well over 20 minutes after us, and for sure did not order before us. Still not a big deal, it happens. Remember the place is packed. 45 plus minutes later our meal finally shows up... yikes... wrong dish for the both of us. At this point my wife is so famished she does not care and eats 0.o Me on the other hand get a little frustrated and, after trying something I really did not want, returned it. Let me also stress that even with the order mixup our server was very understanding and sweet. Maybe a little overwhelmed but genuinely wanted to "make it right" for my wife and I. She offered to replaced our plates, even insisted when I politely declined. The kitchen kindly expedited my reorder and properly got it to me. At this point I'm not sure if it is me or just the way the food is here. My bistec beef was very tough and the onion not so caramelized. The yellow rice was too salty, pass the well seasoned point. I was not going to say anything else and just take my lost at this point. However, our awesome server would have none of it. She offered to make something else and again I politely declined. Well... A couple minutes later our server brought not one but two flan. One to eat now and one to bring home o.0 what a superstar. Guess what? The second flan did not make it home. Yes, it was that delicious... or maybe I was just hungry lol Throughout this meal experience the owner also got involved. Contrary to our server I would say our interactions could have easily escalated quickly. I see this often, when an owner gets strong emotionnal attachment to their process and products. An example of our interaction would be when asked if I liked my refired dish and mentioned the yellow rice being too salty i was told that maybe my taste buds were off today o.0 I could easily give a few more examples, including being charged, mind you with a 10% discount, for the meal I did not eat. In the end the owner realized I was not here to get a free meal and made it right. But it's beside the point. The bottom line for me was, the food was not at all what was expected. This is a dish we love and one of our favorite Cuban dish we eat regularly. So when I say this maybe the last time we come here... time heals all wounds! You never know. Perhaps not... We stopped here for a late impromptu lunch after arriving in Mount Dora. There were only about 4 tables of patrons, but it also was in-between the lunch crowd and early dinner crowd. Admittedly I am fairly new to eating Cuban food but I've heard 3 things that are staples: plaintains, mofongo, and ropa vieja. So I decided to try the Tostones Rellenos with Ropa Vieja and a side of yellow rice. It was an appetizer that I got for my meal. This was a crispy plantain cup filled with ropa vieja, which is a shredded beef that reminds me of a flavorful pot roast type of meat. This was so good! I was so happy with my choice. We were so excited to try this place specially for the whole fried snapper. We took our family for our moms birthday. The food took forever to come out. Literally felt like forever. Considering we had 3 fried snapper ordered I understand somewhat. But then we were told we couldn't order dessert because the kitchen had closed. That was a huge bummer on my moms birthday. But for the food honestly the bread and plantains were the best part. The bread was warm and so good. Served with 3 sauces. My mom and I were staying in Mount Dora for a mother-daughter vacation! After 2 days, I was ready for a familiar filling meal. I frequently order vaca frita at a restaurant nearby work, so I knew what my go-to order would be... VACA FRITA! There was a pianist right near the front door, who was playing the piano and singing in Spanish. He walked around singing to the tables, which was actually kind of awkward. Never really thought of having a pianist singing Spanish music in a tuxedo/suit. Maybe a little Mariachi band or something like that would make more sense? ... I guess it just was unexpected. Anyways, our server, Scott, immediately greeted us and told us about the 2 for 1 margarita deal (disappointing because the deal didn't include frozen margaritas). We ordered margaritas and mariquitas to start, which were delivered around 5 minutes later. When Scott came back, we placed our orders... Red Bean Soup for my mom and Vaca Frita with black beans, white rice, and maduros for me! OK - now this is where the 3 stars comes in. Scott had a positive attitude and told my mom that we were only his 3rd table EVER! AND, we quickly learned, he doesn't speak Spanish. Our order was served, but it was incorrect... Black Bean Soup was delivered for my mom and the vaca frita had black beans, white rice, and yellow rice for me. We had him take back the black bean soup and replace it with the correct red bean soup and same with the yellow rice with the maduros. The red bean soup was delivered 5 minutes later and, sadly, another plate of yellow rice was delivered for me. Scott came to check up on us and I had to clarify that maduros are plantains! Once he understood better, the order was delivered correctly and we indulged! Overall, 3 stars because it seems like the restaurant is new and the service/staff could use better training. The vaca frita was rather dry and the beans were bland - didn't really seem homemade. Anyways, maybe I'm spoiled since I work in Miami and can have authentic Cuban food at my disposal, but Las Palmas didn't seem to match up. We came here after the craft fair. We were seated at one of two tables left unoccupied in the restaurant. Our food took forever and we became a bit hangry. We talked about (amongst the two of us) speaking with the manager; however, when the food arrived all the "hanger" melted away. The food was delicious! We had to share the platter at our outdoor table--very cumbersome. The beers on tap that we ordered were out, and the waitress took ten minutes to let us know that. The service was atrocious. There was a long black curly hair actually cooked into a Cuban sandwich. When we showed the sandwich to the "manager" she apologized and said she would get another sandwich. We did not want anything to eat there at all at this point as we were disgusted. Stopped in for lunch this past Tuesday while spending a "social distancing" day in Mount Dora. When we entered we were the 1st patrons to be seated for lunch and were only joined by two other parties. We were seated far apart. All SD measures were in place. We ordered and then another waitress had to come out and confirm the order as they mixed some things up. We ordered ice tea, which was perfect. Just steeped perfectly. I mention this because most times the tea is weak. For food, two beef empanadas. Pastry was Perfect, unfortunately it was lacking enough meat. Each one could have used at least one more spoon of meat. They were delicious, just a little hollow. When our lunch specials of half sandwich's and soup and salads came out the confusion was evident. Just some mix ups of who got what. We worked it out among overselves and we all had our food. They also brought out a basket of very flat buttered Cuban bread and it went fast. Quite good! They came with 3 sauces one was a chili sauce, a garlic and a creamy type of cilantro dressing. That cilantro dressing also came with the salad with the lunch of half sandwich. I was expecting the typical red wine vinaigrette for the salad but my son devoured that dressing with his salad. He had the 1/2 Palomilla steak sandwich, the meat was chopped up with onions and potato sticks. I had the Cuban Chicken soup and also the same steak sandwich. The soup was very tasty, but the sandwich was delicious. It was perfectly cooked. Hubby got the red bean soup with 1/2 Cubans. He enjoyed the soup. Unfortunately he didn't enjoy his sandwich as much. For some reason his bread was very doughy and not flattened like ours so its meat to bread ratio seemed off. I ended up giving him my 1/4 sandwich which he liked much better. I am an awesome wife. Food was mediocre at best, waiters were nice and very helpful. The "two for one" draft beers are watered down, warm and did not taste like draft at all. The place is very small and elbow room is tight. Appetizers took 30 min then another 35 min for entree. We were offered free desert but did not want to stay any longer. Wow did we love this place! 2 for 1 marguerits which were delicious. Our favorite was the BlackBerry Blood orange. The food was authentic, delicious and very very well priced! On Wednesday from 5:30-8:30 is the singer (more like nightingale) Paula Baker. She was outstanding!!! Do not miss this opportunity to have great drinks and food while listening to her. TERRIBLE! We ordered the chicken palomilla a side of yuca fries and a side of sweet plantains. A Cuban sandwich and fries. Literally the food came out with three fries, three yuca fries and three sweet plantains. My husband and I stopped in here for lunch today during our brief visit to Mount Dora. I used to frequent this restaurant years ago when it was the old Palm Grill and never had a bad meal there so we thought we would give this current place a try. First of all, the service was extremely friendly and attentive. Not only was our server Bianca asking how our meal was but several other servers were checking on us as well! And the food was even better! We started off with the ham croquette appetizer which included four small croquette logs fried to perfection and an assortment of sauces (The garlic one was our fave.) For my main course, I had the ropa vieja (shredded beef) with yellow rice, red beans and sweet platanos. Everything was tasty and cooked to perfection. I am so glad I brought half of it home wih me because I will be able to enjoy the rest of it all over again tomorrow! My husband had the chef special of the day which was bistec a caballo, a thin steak covered in onions and two fried eggs over a bed of yellow rice with sweet platanos on the side. He loved his dish and from the bite he let me have, the steak was very tender and all those flavors blended very well together. My husband talked me into dessert so we had the tres leches cake which was artfully presented and tasted even better. The delightfully rich cake was saturated in a silky, creamy milk. There were a LOT of two for one drink specials which hubby took advantage of. Overall, the prices were fairly reasonable. We will definitely be back! read more
