OK, all you whiners and Californians, that proclaim that there is no authentic Mexican food in Oklahoma, well here it is, Larry's Mexican Restaurant in beautiful down town Wapanucka.
Indisputable substantiation of authentic Mexican food in Oklahoma:
First of all, Larry said it is! That alone should be enough. Secondly the sign on the building. I have found that every Mexican restaurant that has a handmade sign on the building, or out front, is guaranteed to have authentic Mexican food. Want more evidence? Check the pictures.
The meal starts with Larry's hand-crafted tortillas, fried crispy, served with fresh salsa verde. Ask for the salsa Picosa and Larry will bring you a big bowl of the hot stuff. I ordered a side of Guacamole. Well, yeah maybe pass on the Guac. Sodas come in the can or bottle. Everything is made fresh; your order may take a few minutes. The service is friendly. The nice lady that does the cooking came out to check on us after we were served.
I ordered a couple of steak tacos. Two, that was all I needed. Corn tortillas filled with tender flavorful beef, cilantro and chopped onion. Lay on the salsa and "Yes" they were delicious.
The décor is an attractive mixture of wagon wheels, dead deer, dead ducks, and a couple of offensive Texas Stars. Colorful papel picado banners trim the ceiling border; the finishing touch for authentic Mexican restaurant ambiance. Comfortable seating. The air conditioner works. In the event that hostilities erupt outside, the building is well fortified. Iron bars on the windows and doors that will keep you in if necessary, or keep the banditos out.
So, there you go. Next time you are in Wapanucka, eat at Larry's! read more
