It's been a while that I've moved out of Pittsburgh; I've found other bars that I like, but nothing has quite replaced Gooski's in my heart. I make a point to pay my respects every time I return here. Hardly anything has changed on the interior in the last 30 years. And I hope it never does. It's dark, it's grimy, it's smoky, it's quintessentially Pittsburgh. Crowd has always been an effervescent mix of ages and walks of life. The beer selection is wide and affordable. And the food is just right for intoxicated palates.

The place really seemed to be well run, with bartenders who really knew some detail around the various whiskey options available. They made some recommendations for me, and I got a chance to try a few new things. Food was good, but this really isn't a food destination. There were a few vegetable forward options on the menu (but only a few). Even so, the vegetables were fresh and the food was generally good. In any case, I can absolutely see myself stopping by on a regular basis. This place had a really good vibe.

Reasonably priced for everything. Cold beer, great wings- I was surprised that the food was actually really good!! Removed 1 star because it was insanely loud and people around us had zero spatial awareness. It was a group of both women & men and there was probably about 12 of them. 1/3 of the place was empty but they decided to sit right next to me and my fiancé, half of them stood around and didn't even sit. Yelled, talked, and hooted and hollerd full volume, then proceeded to put some of their dirty cups and glassware on our table!!!! Horrible and gross manners We ended up getting up from our table and moving so that helped. So be cautious you may have to do the same if you're coming in to eat/have a casual drink

In addition to indoor seating on the first and second floor, they also have a fenced in patio outside for sitting. As we sat outside, we saw groups of people who could not figure out how to get into the speakeasy. Another thing that happened was that they closed early the night that I went because of the lack of customers. A group was trying to come in as we were leaving but we told them they were closing for the night. So be aware of that, if you're planning to go late night (past 11 pm). However, the drinks were amazing as always! They now added a couple of small bites so we tried the cucumbers. They were delicious and packed with flavor! Our drinks were great as always. They have even more options than the last time I was there which was nice! I still really enjoy this little space!

The atmosphere alone is worth a visit. The drinks are definitely crafted with care and have a lot of complexity, but with only two bartenders working, it took quite a while to get ours. Not the place to go if you want quick service or are grabbing a drink before another event. My biggest downside is the price point--most cocktails are around $17. They're good, but at that price I can really only justify having one. Note: They do not have food, just snacks like peanuts. Overall, amazing ambiance and well-made drinks, just expect slower service and a higher bill.

All of that being said, the service and professionalism of the staff is severely lacking. The bar staff are cold, inattentive and poorly dressed. On a very recent visit to the pub there was actually a really great live local band playing and in the middle of a song one of the bar tenders stopped the band and told them to "fucking turn it down". It completely derailed the performance and killed the vibe of the room. I have given the Brookline Pub several chances but after that I will never be back.

I went for my first trivia night and it was really fun! It gets pretty busy, so make sure to head there before 7pm to get a seat and your team situated. Their special for Tuesday is $2 burgers and they feature a beer at a special price as well (forgive me for not remembering the price... I swear I didn't drink that much!). Last night was Sam Adams seasonal, but they also have local beers on tap, and I happily ordered East End's Fat Gary (my fave!). The burger was okay. Nothing crazy. The bun seemed a little stale. But honestly the fries totally made up for that. Actually, the fries made me forget we waited about 45 minutes for our food. Granted, I think they get pretty slammed for trivia night. The staff was really hustling with what looked like only one to two servers. I didn't realize it was an old movie theater, so you look up and there's a beautiful tin ceiling. It's still a dive bar, but I feel like they have some really great features... again FRIES, a good craft/local beer offering and plenty of TV's for essential game watching.
