A staple AYCE spot in Sunset Park! Most recently came for a birthday dinner -- you can choose from a shared pot to individual pots. Service was very efficient for how busy it was on a Friday evening. We all enjoyed the tomato broth, high quality meats and seafood! Our favorites included the spicy marinated beef, fish roe fishballs, and shrimp paste.

Overall: AYCE hot pot ($34), AYCE BBQ skewers ($36), or both ($42) Awesome place, busy so a bit loud during dinner service but seated quickly, food is fresh, and I've been here about 6 more times before this one. 5/5 would recommend. Food: They have the expected soup bases, nothing too fancy or gimmicky, but they nailed the essentials. I always go for a hearty bone broth. There are a bunch of appetizers you can choose from. There are also a large variety of hot pot and BBQ skewer meats to choose from. It is not a self grilling BBQ experience as one expects from a combination hot pot place, but rather they grill and season skewers in the kitchen before bring them to your table. Decent veggie variety and fresh. Large sauce station that is well maintained and clean. If I had to pick some negatives would be the lack of seafood variety and that drinks were not included in the AYCE. A free dessert item for each diner though. Service: Came here with my partner during dinner service. The wait time was minimal. They gave us bags to place our coats in to prevent them from absorbing the hot pot smell. The waitstaff were friendly and always nearby to flag down. Ambiance: Nice dim lighting. Almost all the tables were filled so it was loud. The restaurant was bustling with activity. We came here during lunch another time and it was the perfect noise level and ambiance. If I had to nitpick, I would say the music was too loud. Recommended menu items: Must try the brown sugar rice cakes. Warm chewy insides, crispy and sweet outside, and super addictive. I have eaten 4-6 orders of these every time I have come here.

This place was so nice. We got seated downstairs and where attended to right away. We got the hot pot with bbq skewers option for $42. We then ordered at least 2 of all theoptions available. Since we were 3 people it worked out. We got a simple soup base. I wanted a little spice in my soup but not soo much that it was gonna burn and they were nice enough to bring the dry spice blend so i can add to my liking. The food was good. We ordered a few extra items but our first initial order was enough. The meats and vegetables tasted very fresh. The staff was very friendly and the place clean. Would love to return again.

We came to Laojie Hot Pot Manhattan on a Saturday night as a family of five, celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival a bit early (it falls on Monday this year). The restaurant was buzzing -- warm, lively, and full of that cozy weekend energy you want from a hot pot spot. We decided to go all in and ordered both the hot pot and BBQ combo. A small heads-up for anyone new: if one person at your table wants the BBQ add-on, everyone has to get it. It's a quirky policy, but we rolled with it. The vibe was nice -- bright and upbeat without feeling chaotic. Our waitress checked in often to see if we needed more food, which I appreciated. Still, I did wonder why they don't have wireless ordering tablets like some other hot pot chains -- it would make the whole experience smoother and let diners place refills more conveniently. One thing that surprised me -- the only free drink is tap water. Soda costs $2.99 each, so when I read other reviews mentioning "free soda," I was a bit thrown off. Maybe that's a location thing? Overall, it was a pleasant evening -- good energy, helpful service, and a nice way to kick off the holiday weekend. I might try the Brooklyn location next time, since several reviewers said it's even better.

Came here with a friend who recently moved to nyc and honestly this was the best hotpot place I've been to in a while. We did both skewers and hotpot and both were great quality. Anytime we picked up the menu, a person came over for us to order more with no prompting which definitely makes this a better value than any other place because they usually take a while. At the end of the meal they gave us a pudding which was delicious. Originally only ordered two for the four of us but ended up ordering the other two as well.

My group went here last year and we always saw our table full. The importance of me saying that is because we went back here again just recently after we went to the Laojie in Manhattan. Compared to the Manhattan location, the Brooklyn location is still a thousand times better, ranging from service to the food. Meat was fresh, and at least two waiters came and checked up on us consistently. The basic package includes seafood and it was still as amazing as without the high quality food. Their food was already... high quality. Soda, tea, WLJ is free, and the snacks we had at the end were also free to the point where... we really did eat our worth. One of the first times I can say I ate my fill, and if I wanted to, I could probably even eat more than that. They also give a great amount of crab, which I have never got during hotpot but decided to give it a try, and really, this place is so much better compared to the LJ in manhattan. For what I chose that was in my sauce are: their homemade sauce, chili paste, garlic, cilantro, and coriander. Amazing combination.

It is cold these days. What better way to eat good food and warm yourself up than hot pot. Lao Jie is a popular AYCE hot pot spot in NYC. They also offer kbbq, however we opted out of the kbbq this time. There are so many soup base and food to choose from. We got to try alot of their menu items and they were all so good. If you are adventurous, they got pig brain, beef tripe and etc if not, they got plenty of beef, fish, crabs, noodles and etc options for you. The service was also really good. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Highly recommend this spot!

Went to Lao Jie around 11:30 and had a great time! The food was amazing. We were just two people and got the hotpot. Soda and hot tea are included in the AYCE (free), but things like smoothies, fruit, or boba aren't. The vibe was really chill and the place looked nice. They played Chinese music, which makes sense since it's a Chinese restaurant, lol. Staff were super nice and kept clearing our empty dishes without us even asking. As for the BBQ skewers -- personally, I wouldn't recommend getting both hotpot and skewers at the same time. The skewers tend to sit out too long while you're eating hotpot, so they get cold and just don't taste as good. Also, I didn't love the Chinese five spice they use on the BBQ -- it's not really my thing, but some people might enjoy it. Worth trying once to see if you like it!

Hair in the veggie
Zoey N.

So disappointed, I usually come every weekend for hotpot but today, I found hair in my pot TWICE in two separate batches in different type of soup base. The river prawns are also very dead. The restaurant offered to change the soups again for the 3rd time, but I don't want to waste my time reordering everything and waiting for the soup based to get hot. Although I was still hungry but I've lost my appetite. They gave us a 20% discount for the bill but 20% off doesn't bring back my appetite. We left the restaurant unhappy, unsatisfied and hungry.

Jacquelyn C.

Favorite hot pot spot for the value and taste! They have all the hot pot essentials and morelike fatty beef, fish balls, fish paste, etc. All the staff are also very quick to refill the pot and take orders. At the end of dinner they give you a milk tea pudding dessert.

The only dessert on their menu (not enclosed) it's pudding in milk tea. I prefer them separately but others may enjoy it.

In addition, the waitresses and front staff were not welcoming and seemed inattentive toward guests. What was especially concerning was observing staff members wiping wine glasses with visibly dirty tissues, which raised serious concerns regarding hygiene and sanitation standards. Despite being seated for approximately 15 minutes, no one approached our table to take an order or even acknowledge us. The lack of basic customer service, combined with the cleanliness issues, made the overall dining experience highly unsatisfactory. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and improves both the sanitation practices and customer service standards moving forward. We decided to leave shortly after arriving after witnessing staff members cleaning wine glasses with dirty tissues. The overall experience became unacceptable. Based on the cleanliness issues and lack of professionalism, this was one of the worst dining experiences I have encountered. I would give this restaurant 0 stars if that were possible.

Because there wasn't a lot of ppl to tend to, the staff took care of us really well and the food came out SO FAST. Got the chicken and fish maw soup base as well as the tomato soup base. Both highly recommended!! When you start running out of soup base in the middle of your meal, the staff should refill your pot with the same soup base. For the chicken fish maw, it was always refilled with the same broth. But for the tomato broth though, it was a bit inconsistent... They refilled it once with tomato broth and then 2x they refilled it with a clear broth. Didn't bother us too much though so we didn't say anything. There were also a lot of promotions going on: 1) If you pay by cash, you get 1 free LAANKEE beverage per person! AND you get AYCE free dessert from their menu (dessert usually is extra $$). 2) If you post on social media, you get free Australian lobster. The Australian lobster was so good and meaty! Super worth it imo. AYCdrink from their 2 fridges. Not all drink are in both fridges, so check out both! Pro tip: there are thin plastic straws on the sides of the fridge to poke through the foil of the soy milk drinks! This is the only place I know of that does AYCE durian and their durian is so creamy and sweet! No bitterness at all. Last yr, they came frozen when we ordered it so we had to let it sit to defrost. But this time when we ordered, it was already defrosted and ready to eat!! We were so full from hotpot, but still managed to eat about 3 orders of it. So good! With tax and tip, it came out to $160 for 2 ppl, so $80pp. Definitely one of my favorite premium AYCE spots! But will only come once in a while since it's a bit pricey, but def worth it! *** JUST FYI though... on the receipt, the suggested tip that they list is POST-TAX. Just something to think about when paying.
