Ask for David Crombie. I'd been looking for an apartment for months-- units I saw were either mysteriously rented, or just not a great fit. Brokers were pushy, absent, or just terrible. Then I met David. David is energetic, enthusiastic, passionate. He hit the ground running, meeting me with a huge smile and lots of energy. He was empathetic, he listened to all my concerns, and I felt like every step of the way he was looking out for me. David was never pushy (ever, which, trust, is a miracle in New York) and has your best interests at heart. Moreover, if you are renting in Crown Heights, David lives in the neighborhood, knows the market back and forth, sideways, and beyond. David will always be your greatest advocate in today's market, and available for support via text, email, and on call. Whenever you need him. His ability to put you at ease is nearly supernatural, and he took the time to meticulously explain my lease, and followed up with me when he didn't know the answer, even months after. David took care of me. He's filled with passion and kindness that is absent from the renting process in New York; he made it quick, painless, and above all, it felt like a solid choice. Strongly do not recommend this place. Their agent was rude to us and disappeared with our deposit after things went wrong with the apartment we were interested in. My friend and I worked with Seth, who never met us in person (he just left the doors of the apartments open for us and texted). He told us one thing before we applied for the apartment and another afterwards, which caused a lot of issues for us and wound up delaying the application process about a week. Things with that apartment did not work out, and Seth tried to convince us to get a different apartment with them, which we did not want after this experience. His texts began to get very rude and he started guilt tripping me because the apartment had been off the market that week. After he confirmed that they would be keeping our deposit, we never heard from him again. I've been asking for a simple receipt or email, something in writing for our records just saying that they are keeping our deposit and Seth has not responded, and the girl at their office says that they don't do that. If a place is keeping your $500 deposit but will not confirm with you in writing, RUN. read more

First things first, David from Lang saved our butts when my roommate and I first arrived to NYC from Minnesota. We did not know that there had been a mishap with our cashiers check (which we needed to move in that same day) never arriving at their office through the mail. As it was already Saturday evening at this point, we were faced with finding a way to get him the money that night, or else spending two nights in a motel with a moving van until the banks opened back up on Monday morning (no thank you). David saw the sheer panic start burning in both of our eyeballs, and was quick to calm us down with a solution. We ended up transferring money to him through an app and then he used his personal funds to pay that half of the deposit. Wonderful Service! I recently moved to Brooklyn from Seattle. I saw an ad on Craigslist for a great studio in my price range through Lang Realty. I had contacted many ads prior to this one and none were responding. Lang Realty actually did respond quickly. I spoke with Dave who met me at the location, showed me the place, gave me excellent help and communicated with me regarding my difficulty in getting the application process completed. Since I had just arrived here fro WA I did not have all the documents that Lang Realty needed to approve me. I had a horrible experience with Lang. Lang held onto my deposit for 7 days before saying the landlord denied my application because "they just didn't like you." It has been two weeks now and they still have not returned my deposit, despite numerous phone calls. Because of this, I was forced to sublet and I'll have to move again. Putting an application in with Lang was an expensive mistake. Scott was friendly and helpful until he realized I'm gay. From then on he was very rude. He stood me up for a viewing after I confirmed our appointment both by email and text message the day of the appointment. He was incredibly unprofessional. read more

I had an amazing experience with David at Lang Realty. I originally messaged him about an apartment on Eastern Parkway that ended up being off the market just a few hours later, but David told me he might have another apartment opening up soon. A couple of days later he sent me photos of that apartment, and I told him that I was very interested--he pushed the tenant to let him show the apartment earlier than she originally wanted, and he made sure that I was the first person to see it before it was listed on any sites. Throughout the entire process, David answered all of my questions over email and text within five minutes, and made me feel very comfortable with each step. I saw a listing on Craigslist for an apartment that seemed too good to be true. $1,200 a month for an extra large studio in the Bronx. Electric and gas included! No fee! Better yet, it was rent stabilized! They even advertised that guarantors were accepted. Since I have issues with my credit due to a failed business, I texted Mr. Brickman and expressed interest. (He prefers texts and refuses to answer his phone; now I know why.) When I texted him, he asked how my credit was. I said that it was mediocre, but that I had a guarantor who made six figures. He didn't bother to text me back, not even to say that it wouldn't work or that he couldn't help me. I was offended for about ten minutes, but I realized that getting upset about the actions of a sleazebag is pointless. Their ads are classic "bait and switch." They advertise deals that are too good to be true; undoubtedly, dozens respond and they keep the suckers. Whatever you do, don't believe the good reviews here. My guess (and it's just a guess) is that they're obviously planted, as there is simply no way that anyone could have a good experience with this kind of outfit. I've been in real estate for over twenty years. Honest people like me laugh at "agents" like this. It always catches up to them, and I wish I could be there to witness it when it finally does. They represent the very worst horror stories you could ever hear about in the real estate business, and they're the types of people who make the rest of us cynical. Wow. Joe Brikman is kinda the worst I've ever "worked" with. He immediately contacted me to view an apartment I was interested in, and was very responsive initially. As soon as I asked him to tell me the exact location of the apartment so I could plan my trip there, he stopped responding. After 3 email attempts with no response, he finally told me the address of the apartment 15 minutes after the set time we had planned to meet. He also told me the "right side of the building is open for you to check out". Huh? I'm just going to randomly wander into an apartment building in the hood and view this WITHOUT the broker or a super? Are you crazy? Sounds like a trap to lure women into getting raped or robbed. It's very possible that Joe himself or a super would be there to show me the apartment, but his cryptic messages and inability to respond to simple emails left me disenchanted. Thanks for wasting my time, Joe! I was about 90% sure I wanted to rent that place, so you just lost a sale. read more

Joe was horrible. When we met him to see the appointment, he was a one word answer agent. Didn't seem to care, just a whatever guy. When we emailed him for other apartments on the Lang website with him as a contact, he said he didn't know what we were talking about. We sent him the links and he has yet to reply back to us about them. I read the reviews here and thought may be it wasn't true about him. But boy, were you guys spot on! Worked with David and he found us the perfect place! We weren't pressured into doing anything, and the very next day we were approved and the lease signed! I've worked with a lot of pushy, untrustworthy real estate agents, and David was friendly, reliable, and honest with us. They worked with me (an anxious first-time lessee) every step of the way with the utmost patience, and they were always in contact, replying to texts and phone calls quickly. Also, as for all the one-star reviews on here complaining about losing their 75$ application fee, application fees are NEVER refundable at ANY real estate office, and 75$ is the exact cost to check your credit score. Some real estate offices charge 100$ or more to apply, and again it's never refundable, so really they nice people over at Lang are saving you money. From everything I've experienced, the people over at Lang are kind and trustworthy. Real Estate and house hunting is a tricky business, and they made it almost easy! read more

I must be one of the lucky few. I worked with a broker named Mel who was not only on time to my appointment(s), but also very responsive and quite hilarious. My experience went a little something like this... saw a place on Craigslist at 11:30pm the Thursday after Christmas. Sent an email, got a response at 11:33pm; we traded a few emails then a text and met up at the apartment the next day (Friday) at 11am. By the following Tuesday (4 days later), my application was in. By Thursday, I was approved. In between all of that, Mel answered all of my annoying ass texts and phone calls and even held on to my lease when I caught the flu in the middle of the process. NYC real estate is cut throat. I can't speak for the bad broker attitudes however business wise, I am willing to bet that Lang may not be at fault for all of the horror stories on here. NYC landlords are notorious for hiring 5-10 brokers to rent an apartment. The brokers don't communicate with each other (duh they want the commish for themselves) hence all the back and forth and feeling like the rug is pulled out from under you when you don't get the spot. In any event, I am writing this post from my new apartment. Glad to be back in BK and would probably use Mel & Lang again if I ever rent another place. read more

Wow. Stay far, far away from Lang Realty, particularly Dave. I set up and confirmed an appointment with him on the morning I was due to see it, and arrived at 11:08 for the 11:00 am appointment, after taking an hour-long train ride from the Upper West Side, to find three other people standing outside the building. "It's already gone," they said, "and he's refusing to show it to anyone else." While I acknowledge NYC apartment-hunting is cutthroat, I seriously doubt that in eight minutes, someone had viewed, placed a deposit on, and vacated the apartment. When I texted Dave, he said he was "done there," and when I said something along the lines of "I wish I had known," (meaning I wish I had known he had no intention of actually showing us the apartment, or had had some warning that so many people would be viewing it at that time or that the window for viewing was literally eight minutes), his reply was, "Wish you had known what? People came on time and rented it?" And that's why he's receiving this review. The rest, as I said, I could deal with, as I'm familiar enough with the ridiculousness of looking at apartments in New York to have developed a thick skin. But the rudeness and lack of professionalism was entirely uncalled for, and making a snarky, condescending comment to someone he'd never even met, and who could have been a potential client but sure as hell won't be now, was entirely unacceptable. Here's the story: my partner and I were looking for a one bedroom in Prospect-Lefferts. We contacted Joe, because we saw his ads all over Streeteasy and Craig's List. We texted him about a specific apartment; he responded right away and set an appointment for late Friday afternoon. At the appointment, Joe wasn't a bucket of sunshine, but he was professional and answered our questions thoroughly. We told him what we were looking for and what we were hoping to pay; he showed us two more similar apartments. We loved the third apartment we saw and texted him an hour after the showing letting him know of our interest. He emailed us the application material right away; and we put in the completed app that night. Over the next few days, Joe always responded to our texts and emails promptly. We had to follow up with him regularly, but things moved along. A week later, we were signing the lease on our apartment. Joe was really nice at the lease signing: again answering our questions and providing us with everything we needed. Even after the lease was signed, Joe answered my questions via text immediately after I asked them. Lang refunded our deposit money right away after we paid the full signing costs via check. Joe and crew got the job done. There was no hand holding; which is what we expected of NY real estate. But, we really can't complain. With the help of Lang Realty, we found an apartment we love in less than three hours of searching. (Another reviewer said that Joe treated her poorly because she was a lesbian, that may have been the case for you, but being lesbians didn't seem to affect the treatment we received.) read more

Bait and switch. I know one shouldn't have high expectations in NYC when it comes to brokers, but if you're a liar, you should be able to handle some honest reviews from your critics. Saw an apartment on craigslist one night. Texted the number listed asking if it was still available, and if so, could I set up a time to view it. Next morning, someone from Lang texted back, stating the apartment was available and kept going on and on about how awesome it was. I kept replying back, "sounds terrific, can I please view it?" Jerk-off from Lang would reply back, "Yes, the apartment is great." Again I asked, "Great! Could I set up an appointment?" Jerk-off from Lang then stopped responding. Ten minutes later, saw the same apartment reposted on craigslist, this time by a different broker at Lang named Levi. Texted that number and Levi replied back that the place was still available. After passing Levi's initial test of income and credit requirements, he set up an appointment to have me view it, but of course the conversation ended with, "confirm an hour before the appointment." Right then I knew it was a scam... brokers who say this have no intention of showing you the apartment you want. Come an hour before the appointment, the apartment was supposedly rented (if it ever existed).... of course Levi did have another great place near-by to show me. He didn't have any photos, or any real information about move-in or the pet policy, but he needed to show the place ASAP. Karma, Lang. Here's the truth: No one ever wants to deal with a broker. But this is New York City, and if you're looking to rent, you mostly don't have a choice. Many of the negative reviews here seem to be expressions of anger about the very idea of brokers. To me, that seems to be an unfair metric for judging a broker or a rental experience. I had a great experience with Josh at Lang Realty, and was surprised to see so many negative reviews when I looked them up to write a positive one. I've dealt with several brokers in this city (including some truly nasty ones), and this was by far the easiest, fastest, most honest and inexpensive experience I've had. I was looking for a studio for no more than $1400 in Brooklyn. I have a stable job with moderate income, but my credit isn't great (due to a really shady "error" with federal student loans, which is a story for another day). I had spent a couple weeks looking at shitty, disgusting, tiny and unsafe apartments in my search for a no-fee apartment. Time after time, I encountered the classic bait-and-switch. I looked at 6 apartments all listed as no-fee, and the first 5, I was startled to discover only upon arriving for the viewing, did in fact have a broker fee (with brokers expressing absolutely no remorse for their blatantly false advertisements). This was NOT the case with Lang Realty. I saw an ad for a no-fee apartment in Prospect Lefferts less than 2 blocks from the park. I called Josh and we set an appointment for me to view the apartment. He greeted me on time, was very nice, friendly and knowledgable, and I filled out an application. When the landlord expressed reservations about my credit, Josh vouched for me and got me approved with a guarantor. The whole process was outrageously easy and fast. And the best part? Josh was honest and true to his word. This really was a no-fee apartment. I paid 1st month and security, signed my lease a few days after getting approval, and moved in shortly after that. Throughout the process, Josh regularly checked in to update me and to see how things were going. After searching for an apartment for a while, I had a moment where I honestly believed I would end up somewhere in the outer boroughs with a cat lady for a roommate. Meeting Josh and working with Lang Realty was a pleasant surprise and I am very grateful to them. Lang is working with apartments in busy and in-demand neighborhoods, and New York City real estate is a blood sport. Not everyone will have a good experience. But don't discount this place because of a few bad reviews. Whereas most brokers use outright lies and intimidation tactics, I experienced only honestly and kindness here. After some scheduling conflicts, he met us at the property and helpfully answered all of our questions. He was very nice, and gave us a ride back to the office so that we could sign our papers. They were patient as we filled out the paperwork, and Scott helped us schedule a lease signing, even texting me on the morning of to say "Good luck." Our experience with Lang was very positive. They have great no-fee apartments and seem willing to help, if you're willing to do the leg work. They seem to be very busy, so don't expect to them to fight for your business. Really interesting work being done here. I am currently abroad so I had my roommate look at apartments on our behalf. We found a really nice one and scheduled a viewing with Dave. That appeared to run smoothly. We talked about it later that day, decided we wanted it and let them know. We were asked to make a deposit equal to one month's rent and 50 dollars per person for application fees. The money part went relatively smoothly. Then there was the application process. Because I was using a guarantor (my parents), I had to relay this information to them from GERMANY because Dave insisted on contacting my roommate who is not in contact with my parents instead of speaking to them or me directly. Just incredibly sketchy. He spoke to my parents maybe twice and claimed that he had tried to contact them (they received no message from him at any time). It was really the strangest thing. I'm having such a hard time articulating just how infuriating this was for us. Throughout this hellish process during which he CONTINUALLY refused to contact my parents directly (I made sure that he had email and phone number contacts), he hassled my roommate every so often about how he hadn't received things from my parents, mind you, this took place over 48 hours. He was asking for W2s and the works and this was going to be a process from the beginning especially with the distance and the constant relay of messages. NO patience was offered. Then at the end of all of this garbage, we weren't even approved by the owners. That may or may not have anything to do with the way this situation was handled. Whatever. It was crap. Just crap. Oh and he was really nice to my roommate. He's probably a very nice guy. I wouldn't know. HE NEVER SPOKE TO ME. I actually read this Yelp page sometime during this debacle and was laughing about how people either really loved this place or really hated it. HAH. I was looking at the no-fee apartments first, but when I discovered that of course these were all much smaller than I imagined, he showed me a few fee apartments. These were wonderful. The paperwork process was quick, easy, the receptionist super responsive and helpful...I've even had to call a few times to get the number of my building management company - Lang has yet to get annoyed at me for this, and responded right away to my inquiry, even though there is nothing in it for them. Dave was wonderful to work with! Dave found my boyfriend and I our first apartment in Brooklyn. I emailed him about a craigslist post and he responded within the hour. He was able to show us 3 apartments in our (modest) price range. He is honest, easy to talk to, and very punctual. Since we are new to the area he showed us apartments in, he provided us with useful information about where everything was around us (train stops, restaurants, etc.) When we decided on an apartment, Dave stayed in contact with me on a daily basis to inform us about our application progress. Once we were approved, Dave sent me back my deposit check (I gave it to him to hold the apartment and there wasn't a brokers fee!) and I received it in the mail the following day. We tried craigslist, and frankly, we were getting jerked around and it was incredibly frustrating. So, of course, we looked on Yelp! for a good realtor in the Brooklyn area. And hell if Dave over at Lang live up to his reputation. The scores on this site are no joke. In a little under 2 weeks, we saw a place we loved, got our paperwork in, and signed the lease... something we hadn't been able to even sniff at by ourselves. Even when faced with the possibility of another applicant being approved ahead of us for the same apartment, Dave worked hard and got us the place. Since getting him involved, it's been a simple and painless process. Really, it's worth your time to just shoot the guys over at Lang an e-mail. If anything, they can at least point you in the right direction, but I'd be surprised if they couldn't take care of you as they did us. read more

Worst experience with a realty ever. First, I contacted Levi regarding a post on Craigslist for an apartment. We set up a time to meet. I text him 2hrs ahead of our meeting time to confirm as I need over an hour to travel by subway from another borough. No answer , then I call him and say I'm calling to confirm our meeting As I need to know in advance due to my long subway ride there. Levi said "I was going to be there at said time but now I'm not" and hung up. 30seconds later he texts me "I was going to be there but now I'm not , dumbass" followed by "go waste someone else's time". Why the rudeness? I only asked confirmation of our meeting time! After this bad treatment I called Lang Agency to explain I was treated badly by one of there agents (Levi) and if they can kindly connect me to a professional agent. I was transferred to Nick who apologized for my bad experience and said he will help me, and call me within 24hrs with a list of apartments I can view. A week later no call from Nick. I called and left a message but no call back from him. Then I called the agency and asked for the owner Nathan. I left him a voicemail about how I'm getting no help from his agency though I have good income and clean credit. He never called back. I tried giving this agency two more chances after bad experience with Levi. But they all (Nick and Nathan) proved to be unprofessional and poor customer service. This agency is a joke. read more

I had a not so great experience with one agent in particular. I don't know about the agency beyond him. I contacted him via StreetEasy about a listing twice. The first time the listing was already rented. The listing stayed up, and I thought it opened again. The second time I was able to schedule a viewing (after haggling about the time), but then he told me only the hour before that it was once again not actually available. He did apologize; I'll give him that. I agreed to see another listing, even though it is out of my price range and I was frustrated. He said he wasn't coming to show it since he thought he canceled with me (he didn't), but the apartment was open and I could just go see it myself. I thought that was odd, so I asked that if he could show it to us the next day. He hesitantly agreed. I emailed to confirm again that I was going to be at this over-budget listing, he asked (AGAIN) if I could come earlier. I said no and that, as mentioned many times before, I can't arrive earlier because of my job, he replied rudely with "Well sorry for asking. I deal with tons of ppl every day and can't remember what each person says " Overall, it was just exasperating to have to repeatedly tell him my budget, availability, and information. I felt unsure to trust someone who seemed so unorganized and impatient with finding my new home and handling the transaction. read more

The guy I worked with, Josh, got me a great apartment. I took the second apartment he showed me - both in the same building. He was friendly, however, he was not punctual being 30 minutes late to the lease signing appointment, did not provide a signed lease until weeks after moving into the apartment and only after several "it's in the mail" or "I'll drop it by today" with nothing in the mail or dropped by. It was a very frustrating experience. He was a decent enough guy, just not so good with paperwork or punctuality. Oh, and the super had no idea I was moving in until I called him to get the keys. Nobody at Lang told him...good thing I called a few days early. The super in the building is super nice - so this is also a big plus. This experience left me viewing both him and Lang Realty as disorganized but I didn't have to pay any fee so it all worked out in the end for me. I also don't think they are shady as much as just totally disorganized. I love my apartment and suggest Lang Realty get more organized. I'd say if you work with them you'll get a great place with a few snafus. read more

We worked with Seth and it was a complete nightmare. Multiple times we showed up to see the same apartment and had to wait 30-45 minutes to be let inside. Once inside, the apartment had not even been cleaned, there was leftover food, hair and lots of cockroaches roaming around the apartment. Overall, really terrible experience. Well, here I am, with one of those "I actually met a good broker" stories. I know, they are almost extinct, but let me tell you: Izzy of Lang Realty is the best it gets. Talk about professional! On time, direct, knowledgable, clear...and the best part: didn't stress me out. We went at my pace. My pace is slow; antagonizing for any broker. But Izzy didn't offer any of that "rent now! last chance! now or never!" crap that almost every broker I've worked with uses as their second language. I have a very specific idea of what I wanted in my mind: a price range, an area, an idea of what sort of building I wanted, and a "type" of neighborhood (I prefer residential over commercial, and I don't care about walking 10 minutes to a subway, etc.) After finding one of those through Izzy, and applying, it ended up falling through! I was so discouraged and angry. I had played my "taking my time" game...and lo and behold, I fell victim to the most brutal housing market in the world. And yet, that very day, Izzy starting gathering the resources and data to get me something. He moved quickly for me: and I was a slow, picky and panic-stricken 20-something with "needs". (I really am a broker's worst nightmare). I was terrified that I wouldn't end up with a place--I needed to be out of my current place April 1st. Izzy kept assuring me I'd be fine... and ultimately, he found me a glorious apartment, and it is exactly what I was looking for. I have never been so happy to pay a broker fee in my life. Ultimately, it sounds like the other brokers for Lang Realty suck (Oh thank the LORD I didn't get Levi... he sounds brutal and I would have flipped). But ultimately your experience looking for an apartment depends on the very personality you work with. Who cares what company they belong to, so long as they are human, kind and understanding. I have lived in 5 apartments so far in NYC: this was by far the best "searching" experience I've had. Izzy is a gem... ask for him! Lets hope more brokers like him show up in this market. read more

We had an aweful experience with the broker Naomi Medalie. She cheated us. She conviced us to apply and pay the deposit for an apartment that already had a pending application. She pretended we were the only applicants. We had to wait for 4 days in a stressful situation to hear from her. Finally, we realized she used us as her back up plan. I had a good experience and I'm a picky mofo. I was given Josh's number by a friend and he found me a no fee-rent controlled apartment in S Prospect Park. It's twice as big and cheaper than my old place in Crown Heights. I have grown to really love this building and I am really happy. Cool super. It was one and done but everything was delivered as promised. Josh was nice and professional. Surprisingly nice office but no sign in front. Like a speakeasy of real estate offices. The Lang I went to was on St. Johns/Nostrand ave, so I can't speak for the other offices. Feeling thankful for ending up in a much better apartment than my last one. It might be haunted, though. I heard a ghost scream. read more
