They have a normal standard supply range for an Ace in the mountains. Staff is friendly and helpful. However; the owner is abrupt and surly. If you ask him where something is he will point and wave his hand back and forth and say over there. If you ask for specifics he will ignore you. Then there is a woman in her mid-thirties who is a long time employee or co-owner who seems nice but will flip and become hostile in an instant. She interrogated me about what I was going to use cold whether window washer fluid for. It was non of her business, the fluid was for the cars window cleaning system, and when did window washer fluid become a controlled substance?! The last time I went in she asked if I had an Ace Rewards # and I said yes but it doesn't work even though I updated my contact information twice (Third time worked). After I said that, she turned to me with hatred on her face and just stared. I stared back, pushed the unpurchased items back, said I didn't want them and left. When I looked back she was still staring. Creepy! I am a polite person who goes to great length to not be noticed which is hard because I am a big dude. I especially do not want to be seen exhibiting untoward behavior at any time. With this I am certain their responses are not due to me being a jerk. I've been coming up to our place on the East Shore for 40 years and have always supported the local businesses in town. This trip to this Ace Hardware was the last straw. Our business will now go ONLY to Ayoobs or True Value in Westwood. The newer employee, a larger, balding guy, answered some questions yesterday about a sprinkler timer that was a new product. I was unsure of this new one, but purchased it anyway. After reading the bad product reviews, I decided to return it today, unopened. This guy asked me why was wrong with it and I said that nothing was wrong with it, I just wanted different brand and would buy it elsewhere since they didn't carry it any longer. The attitude I received from this POS was absolutely uncalled for. Word in a small town gets around fast. The older lady at the checkstand heard/saw the whole exchange and said absolutely nothing. no apology, nothing. She also has had a bad attitude the past few times I've been in there. I'll never set foot in this place again. I'd rather shop in Westwood True Value, Ayoobs, or actually make the trip to Chico rather than give this place another cent. I'll even do Amazon for next day delivery. I Changed my mind on a product and returned it in the same new condition, unopened. His belittling went on further, but I'll leave things at that. I hope these owners do something about this person, or sell the place. Other Yelp reviews confirm my point. We moved to Lake Almanor from the Bay Area a year ago, and I'm very impressed with this store! The employees are all helpful and friendly! If there's something you can't find, they help you locate the item or direct you to the owner. Duane has ordered me items they didn't have stocked and helped me with my snow blower purchase. I grew up in Susanville, but I haven't had to deal with snow in over twenty years. The snow blower was a game changer. The big bonus that I didn't expect to see in Chester was the Big Green Egg smoker brand. I purchased mine in Santa Cruz a few years back, and I love the product. They have all the accessories and can order what they don't have in stock. Keep up the great work guys!! read more

Well, different employees but still the wrong attitude, arguing even when wrong, what happened to 'the customer is always right' even if they're not? Grumpy doesn't get my business!! (year or more later) I could really like this hardware store if it wasn't for the grumpy, rude, and never smiling woman at the check out. Never gets better no matter how many times I see her. Prices are above average, but glad to pay what's necessary because of the great selection...but she makes it real hard to even walk thru the door. One of the best run businesses I have ever seen. The selection for a town the size of Lake Almanor is amazing and the owners are kind, ethical, helpful, honest and fair. The staff are hired for obvious similar traits. I highly recommend taking the time to stop in and look around when visiting the area, passing through or, of course, if its your hometown. Supporting local businesses especially during these strange days of health concerns, etc. that often punish or force close the independent smaller type businesses yet leave huge corporate behemoths open will most likely help maintain the life we prefer and remember. BEST hardware store in Chester/Lake Almanor area. They have EVERYTHING you need to maintain your summer/winter mountain home. I work in construction, and wish every hardware store could be this nice. They are very friendly. Out of the 10 projects I had going on at my family summer home, every single project was able to be completed because they had what I needed in stock. We LOVE Ace Hardware in Chester! Courteous and efficient customer service and beyond! They have just about anything you need for home repairs and then some. Every time we've gone into the store, we've been greeted warmly by helpful staff and left with what we needed. Our most recent purchase was a Weber BBQ and Duane not only delivered it, but helped haul it up the stairs to our deck.
