Been going to the soda fountain for over 40 years. The Rusty Chandelier is the name for the former Lassen Drug. My friends and family have also been going here for 40+ years. Once ownership changed, the service went downhill. For the past several years, we kept given it another try and another chance - always leaving feeling sad for the old fountain, and the sweet teens that worked hard and were kind, the wait was always worth it. Unfortunately the owner, and this isn't a one time thing, but every year since opening, our family and friends have repeatedly been treated rudely. I used to think maybe she was having a bad day...but it keeps happening. You end up feeling like you're in the way, unwanted, or wasting her time. I used to think it won't last ....they will be out of business.....it's 2026 and it's still open. This is the 1st year we didn't go. :( The recipes are different - shakes are smaller and you get treated poorly. Might be better off going to Jeffroes produce for a shake, or pine shack frosty. I hope things will improve at the Rusty, but for now it's not worth dealing with the owner. I hope she gets better. The feedback is very consistent. RIP Lassen Drug. read more

So disappointed with the new updates :( This place used to be a huge staple for our family but since they ripped out all of the charm and character, it has felt cold and unfriendly. The gifts are the same as every other shop on Main Street and it has lost its value for ice cream and shopping. We've only gone to the Pine Shack since, much cheaper and still a great place to be. Not everything needs to be millenial grey and sad. read more

What a joy to step back in time and experience a thoughtful update all in one visit! It's been over 30 years since I last saw the soda fountain in Chester, and walking into Rusty Chandelier brought back all the nostalgia--while impressing me with some much-needed updates that make the space even more inviting and functional. I loved seeing the classic soda fountain still holding court, now complemented by a dedicated ordering station, a convenient pick-up area, and plenty of comfy seating for guests to relax and enjoy. Coming from the city and working in North Lake Tahoe, I half-expected boutique pricing (especially in a seasonal vacation town), but I was pleasantly surprised. My mother-in-law and I couldn't stop grabbing treasures--home decor, gifts, little finds--and we were both stunned at how reasonable everything was when we checked out. It felt like shopping the way it should be. After we shopped to our heart's content, we stopped at the soda fountain/coffee bar to celebrate our finds. Jody recommended the affogato when we couldn't make up our minds, and wow--it was divine. That little sweet pick-me-up was the cherry on top of a perfect visit. The store itself is beautifully decorated, well-organized, and thoughtfully laid out. I especially appreciated the changes designed to streamline the space during busier times--it's clear that Jody and her team are thinking ahead and working hard. We were greeted warmly the moment we walked in and felt welcome the entire time. I've seen a few cranky reviews lately, and frankly, I don't get it. If you've never worked in hospitality or the service industry, maybe don't rush to critique. Creating a space like this--and running it well--is no easy task. Jody and her team are doing a fantastic job, and it shows in every detail. I live about two hours away, but I'll definitely be back! I'm especially excited to check out some of the upcoming classes and the holiday decor as the seasons change. RC has the best straight espresso in a hundred miles and they know how to make an authentic cappuccino. The mixed espresso drinks are delicious as are the shakes, ice cream and pastries. The owners and staff are friendly people with a good sense of humor. They have beautiful artisan items and puzzles!!! I've spent all my summers growing up in Chester. I absolutely love and adore the new chapter for the old Rexall Drug location that is now the Rusty Chandalier. I met the owner when i was in shopping today! She's really sweet and a Chester native. She made me the best blended coffee, and I purchased some nice gifts. Service was very bad. Was not greeted when I came in to order coffee and just stood at the register for a few minutes until a blonde woman came up and asked my order rudely and when I asked if they had a syrup she abruptly said "no" and then quickly said "what do you want". I felt that was very rude so I said I'm actually okay and she said "okay" and immediately walked away. She made zero eye contact so I felt like I was simply an inconvenience. I seldom leave reviews but after reading some of the others I wanted to chime in. My Grandmother, Sharon owned Lassen Gift Co. and the soda fountain prior to The Rusty Chandelier. I grew up going to and working at the soda fountain. I am sad about some of the changes but change is inevitable. I had a chocolate malt and even though they serve them differently now it was definitely the same size as the previously. It was delicious and it taste the same as previously, I even watched them make it lol and know they made it the same way we always did. The kids all had cones, they were a good size and very yummy lol. Customer service was great. All around good experience. read more

I have never written a review of a business, but am compelled to make this one because I care about small businesses and I care about the little town of Chester, California. Today when I entered the store, I was overwhelmed at the transformation of the building from a previous store that I had frequented a lot in the past. It was a positive transformation and looked very classy and upscale from the previous one. But that is where the compliment stops!!! Those (who were obviously working in the store) were so unfriendly and "cold" that it made the experience very much a negative. (My husband couldn't wait to get out the door!) There was no way that I would have purchased anything in this store!!! For me, there needs to be some acknowledgement of a customer and a simple smile or spoken word would have made such a difference. The gentleman who appeared to be the owner was also very unfriendly!! As I said previously, I am for the small businesses and often frequent them and purchase from them. This was not a business that would ever make me return. This review is written with hope that those who are involved in this store will take to heart that friendliness will go a long way in establishing new and returning customers. Lassen Drug (previous name) use to be a staple for us when we would visit every summer. Our family has been visiting since I was a kid. It use to be a lovely and warm visit to get our favorite milkshakes but unfortunately, that was not our experience. There were three women working when we visited and two of them were extremely rude. From checking Instagram it looks like one of the ones who was rude was the owner, which is a complete shame. I was also surprised to see the store being labeled "Dixie Bell" on Instagram. The history of the work Dixie is rooted in racism and the southern confederacy. Yikes, I don't know if that's the best branding term. Unless of course you knew exactly what it meant and stand for that. The remodeled store looks much better than what it was and the milkshake tastes the same but the customer service (two out of three) was so bad it ruined what use to be a lovely experience. If I could give this store a zero, I would. As others have stated, the new owners need to take a class in customer service. I seriously believe they are that clueless. As a part time resident, I like to shop at local stores and go to local restaurants when I am up here. The local people are mostly wonderful and I look forward to seeing them each year. I gave this establishment five opportunities, yes FIVE, and each time, they failed miserably. I will never go back. They are rude, unwelcoming, and rigid. This is one of our favorite stops for our annual week at the lake. I've watched the store grow each year and they continue to offer fantastic cold treats and all kinds of great options for gifts! Took the family in today for fall drink specials. As always, we were greeted with warm smiles and a friendly hello from the owner and staff. The drink specials did not disappoint and satisfied the craving for fall flavor. We enjoyed a pumpkin spice Chia, pumpkin spice latte, maple Brule latte, and a couple of smoothies. You must head in and try them all. Screaming at us from the pastry display were pecan carmel rolls, so we split a couple of them, and I must say they left me wanting more. They use high quality vanilla ice cream, ice milk, and a secret chocolate sauce that is to die for. We've been visiting this soda fountain for nearly 50 years, first as Lassen drug co, then Lassen gift co, and now as the rusty chandelier. Change can be hard but they have done a great job preserving the heart of the soda fountain. Ask about the wood on the walls, it's a lovely full circle story. The merchandise is cute and charming and elegant. They've made the space feel so open and warm with a table to sit at, chairs and couches- it's a fabulous continuation of one of my favorite lake Almanor spots! read more

Attempted to shop with my papered Service Dog today, but was not allowed. The sign on the door states, Dogs must be harnessed and leashed"....so I was surprised when the two Karen's at the counter told me that because her harness didn't say "Service Dog" I couldn't shop. I do have her papers on my phone, but you actually legally are not allowed to ask. There was literally NO ONE ELSE in the store- btw, and it's the end of your tourist season. Small town business owners are successful when they are polite and appreciative of traveling customers, not just their local visitors. I am not confident that Jody has what it takes to make this beautiful small town gathering place a success. When I called Jody to point out a mistake in my ice cream order, I was treated rudely. The conversation did not need to be difficult. Jody was certain that I was wrong about what happened. You be the judge! When my order was placed in front of me, I mentioned an error in the kind of ice cream I ordered, to the server. She just looked blankly back at me. Jody was present but made no offer to replace what had been served in error. I did not want to make a big deal out of it. I ate my Affogato, thinking that perhaps I didn't make myself clear about my request for coffee espresso ice cream in place of vanilla. I let the issue slide. When I returned home, I discovered that the receipt indicated my order change request plus $ charged for added flavor of ice cream. I wanted to be helpful. I did not want anything tangible back from The Rusty Chandelier. I did want a polite conversation with management. I do not feel that Jody has the ability to discern when a customer has good intentions. read more

They were just very cool and had no desire to engage. I don't think they cared one way or another if I was there. Every single shop and restaurant I've visited in Chester has had phenomenal staff. This is a nice shop. Lots of lovely and fun gift and decor items to choose from. Everyone there is so friendly and helpful too. The soda/ice cream fountain is fun. We have gone to the fountain for 50 years since it was under different ownership- visiting several times over our yearly two week visit. It has been a highlight of our vacation. However, the cost of the desserts may be a little higher while the portion of the items has decreased quite a bit. I was greeted with a smile and a good morning as I walked through the door. Not only as I entered, but also as I left. Having seen the store with the previous owner and what it is now I love what the new owner has done to the place. Between the music and the decor there is a very warm and homely feeling while you shop. We've lived in the Quincy area since the 60's and have been to Chester to many times to count. We seen shops come and go and this store is the most unfriendly place I've ever seen in all our years. The minute we walked into the store there was a very cold feeling. As we walked around we felt the owners eyes on us but not a word was said. We then sat at the counter to order ice cream and they made us get up and walk 5 feet to the register to order our ice cream. Ridiculous. 5 feet. The person behind the counter was rude and unhelpful. Once we received our ice cream which was a very small portion for the price we left. Not a thank you or good bye or please come back was said. I see this business not making it more than one summer so I say to the owners "good bye, we'll never come back". Truthfully the one positive thing about this place is they will save on electricity to keep their ice cream frozen because of their cold unfriendly attitude. This review is mainly about the soda fountain and the service. If you've been here before you know the iconic soda fountain vibe and awesome ice cream presentations. The fountain is still there but the way it's handled now as far as ordering and also the presentation and quantity / quality of the ice cream products is just sub par. The vibe is so off. The woman (owner I believe) taking the orders and preparing them just seemed angry to be there. Nothing served in glass but rather all in plastic or paper. Really poor customer service and super disappointed. It wasn't busy at all and there were three people behind the counter so there's really no excuse for such poor customer service. With so many of the Yelp reviews saying the exact same thing about the negative vibe and poor customer service it seems inherent in the management. Also when folks post a review the owner appears to challenge or respond back with snark 'ie I don't know what more you want us to do? Follow you around the store?' Nope - in a small town word gets around so I doubt this will be successful. We're sticking with pine shack or the new soda fountain at Carol's in Prattville in the future. read more

The ice cream was good but the portions were very small for the price. Their menu sign listed multiple sizes for frosted cokes and malts; however, they would only make one small size for the price of the large. We could have overlooked all that, but the employees were incredibly rude. We have been coming here for years and we're excited to go back after the remodel. Unfortunately, they no longer seem to understand customer service. They were rude to us and multiple other customers while we sat at the counter. The younger blonde woman working the soda fountain was the worst. She snapped, " Why would you try to order here when you are literally sitting under the pick-up sign?" at a very nice older couple who tried to order from their seats at the counter. The sign she was referencing is hung very high and no one was noticing it which was making the blonde woman very angry. The whole experience was extremely negative. My daughter even commented, " I didn't know ice cream could be un-fun before this." This makes me very sad because we have always loved visiting the soda fountain when in Chester. Not just fun, creative and beautiful home goods and other products, THE BEST COFFEE I'VE EVER HAD! The hubby and I absolutely love going into The Rusty Chandelier. It was my favorite place before they moved into the old Lassen Gift building. Now it's just that much better. Jodi and Rick updated the soda fountain (and the whole building) and don't just serve up yummy ice cream, shakes and floats, it now has COFFEE AND TEA! (And probably more I'm forgetting to mention) They make LITERALLY the best coffee I have ever had. Hubby gets this amazing loose leaf iced tea that is perfect since he can't have sweets. And, they have several varieties. We love going in and sitting at the bar enjoying conversation in a "homey" atmosphere. And of course, I love looking around and finding new beautiful "treasures". So, whether you live in Chester, or are just visiting, you NEED to stop in! If you get the opportunity to sit and visit with Jodi or any of the staff, you'll fall in love even more. I have been coming to this place for about 35 years. I always looked forward coming to the soda fountain for a sweet treat. I have enjoyed sharing this tradition with my children as well. We were very disappointed in the customer service and how the employees talked to customers. We will not be back which is very sad to me this was a tradition I truly have enjoyed. The staff wasn't friendly and they were annoyed they had to tell customers the process on where to order and pick up. We sat in are seats for about 10-15 minutes and we were never acknowledged until we asked the staff a question. The signs are hung so high and very hard to see. The staff assumes you know the process and are annoyed if you don't know it. I try to teach my kids manners and they noticed how rude the staff was. Pretty sad my children have better manners than the adults. The re-model of the store is beautiful and they have lots of fun stuff to look at. read more
