I haven't been there bc I don't fish but if you do, and need bait, stop by. This family has been in Alviso for ages--and has been selling bait for ages. I'm happy to see them still offering these services for the fishermen choosing Alviso as the spot for their water time adventures. BTW I don't think they rent kayaks anymore. We had so much fun renting a kayak here! I always came to Alviso for the sunset views, but it's a really cool experience being on the water and kayaking through it. Super seamless process to rent! The owners are the sweetest couple and were kind enough to let us rent a kayak later in the day so that we could catch the sunset. They drive the kayak out to the dock when you rent it and you just call them when you're back. Come and support this local business! You won't regret it! read more

We rented kayaks from Laine's Bait Shop today to paddle in Alviso Slough (Alviso Marina County Park.) If you like to support local businesses, with lots of history, colorful characters (owner has the coolest fish sandals and great taste in music!) and friendly, helpful service, look no further than Laine's! You can call ahead for kayak reservations or try your luck but just stopping by. Either way, they will transport the kayaks to the Marina and get you on your way in minutes. We had a beautiful day on the water at this overlooked local treasure, and Laine's is great business to work with. Highly recommend! read more

This review is for the kayak rental! I called in on a Friday to make a rental reservation for the next day and the guy answering the phone sounded really confused but put in my "reservation" since I assume they're not usually so busy that people actually need one... I was a little sketched out at that point but decided to go with it. I arrived at 12pm to the little shop and the owner helped us out. We signed some waivers and then drove a bit to the boat launch area inside the park where the owner met us with his truck filled with kayaks, life jackets, and paddles. His cute daughter was there helping out too and she was adorable!! He got us set up with the tandem kayak, paddles, and floatation vests and that was it - no intro lesson or tips. He told us to call when we were done. No frills and super easy to get going. I thought it was a bit strange he didn't offer to go over some basics or tips but the experience ended up being pretty straightforward anyway. I've never really kayaked before so I didn't know how tired I would be, but by the time we were heading back we had been kind of paddling against the wind/current so I was definitely feeling it. We saw a seal poke its head out of the water and a fish jump out of the water, as well as several boaters and other kayakers. We reached the first opening to the bay and headed back. Eventually made it back after a total of 3 hours. We called and he came and got everything and we were good to go! I ended up getting sunburnt on my legs and a nice sore core the next day but I had a blast, and at a very reasonable price too! I would recommend not trying to do a full day if you're a beginner (over 3 hours), and definitely bring snacks and water if you think you'll need them. They sell some in the bait shop! Although there's not too much to see around Alviso, I still really enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone trying to get a good workout in and enjoy a day in the sun :) read more

Bought fresh bait from them cause I hear they always stock grass shrimp. And by the way they are huge grass shrimps! Place is family owned and their house is attached to the business, so make sure to call if the door is closed. They also have info on local sturgeon that is caught in the sloughs on the same day and I believe host events or competitions to see who catches the biggest one! Had a blast renting kayaks. We paddled through the boat launch ramp available in Alviso that provides a route through the salt marshes of Alviso slough out to the open waters of the San Francisco Bay. The current was a little strong so we didn't make it out that far but the boat launch ramp provides access for both motorized and non-motorized boats and for kayaks. Laines Baites is a small mom and pop business, the price is really cheap and the owners were really friendly and knowledgeable about the area as they regularly go out kayaking/fishing/etc In the marshes. I definitely will return to this location to go kayaking! read more

Norman at Laine's Baits is INCREDIBLY helpful. We wanted to rent a 2-person kayak on a Monday, showed up to the store, requested kayaks, and then decided we didn't have enough time to kayak that day. Norman put up with us changing our minds, and even told us the best time to come back later so that we'd be coming in with the tide. When we decided that we'd rather kayak on a Wednesday (when the store is technically closed), Norman said that it was fine, and set everything up for us. For $45 we had a fantastic time, Norman was very helpful and worked around our schedule. The only useful tip I have is that you should expect to call the store, even at times where they're listed as open. This is not a critique, since the calls were always picked up quickly. read more

Great place to rent a water craft for the day or get some bait to catch something. I'd recommend checking out the area by walking in the park first then go out on a day in the water. I had called in earlier to ask if they have any double kayaks and they said they had only one left for the day so he offered to save it for me and when I went in at the discussed it, it was all quick and easy. Got great advise where to put the crab traps in at Half Moon Bay. The prepackaged tubs of squid made it super easy to bait the traps. Three hours in the ocean and the traps were full! 10 in one trap and 15 in the other. Thanks for helping out; now we are hooked! read more

We had a delightful time kayaking near the Alviso marina and slough! Kyle at Laine's Baits and Rentals couldn't have been a better host--he provided the kayaks, oars and life jackets--and transported put the boats in the water for us. He cheerily gave us a brief orientation and answered all of our questions about the history of this charming setting. We had an adventure! There were large beautiful herons, egrets, cormorants to see along our route. We even saw a Pacific SEAL! I am a beginning kayaker and the kayaking itself was pretty easy. The only surprise for me was-- no one else was out there! $30/boat for half day. I'm surprised more people in Silicon Valley don't take advantage of this fun and inexpensive adventure! read more

We had an excellent experience renting a kayak here last weekend. How it works: The friendly gentleman running the shop signed us up, got us life jackets and paddles, and towed the kayak to the landing at Alviso Marina for us. We paddled out on the slough for about an hour outbound and slightly less than an hour back inbound. It was very peaceful; we only saw a couple of other boats out on the water. It was also a great workout. When we were done, we just tied up the kayak at the dock, gave the shop a call, and they came and picked everything up, super quick! Then we met him back at the shop to get our receipt. Highly recommended. Also available: snacks, drinks, things you need for fishing. We did not go fishing this time or purchase any of these extras. Maybe next time. Do: bring hats, sunglasses and sunscreen, and waterproof ziplock bags to keep your stuff (car keys, etc) dry. Don't: wear anything into the kayak which you will be sad if it gets wet. read more

We took some kayaks out for the afternoon over memorial day weekend. It was so much fun. My boyfriend took a pole and did a little fishing on the way. This is a small bait shop located in a shed at the back of a house. This place is very difficult to find if you've never been here before as the only indication that any business exists is a sign posted on a wooden fence pointing down the driveway towards the back of the house. The setup in back is actually pretty interesting as there's a small shack and dock where it appears they harvest the bait directly from the muddy slough that's basically the backyard. They're only open in the mornings (close at 9am, do not recall when they open, 5am?) so time accordingly. read more

I spend long periods visiting family here, and I literally checked out every kayak rental place within a two hour drive, including lakes. I have rented kayaks several times from Laine's, going through Alviso Slough and even into the bay. This is the closest and best place to rent in the area. The owners are friendly, conscientious, and extremely familiar with the area. Although they cater to a lot of fishing customers, I kayak out to see nature, wildlife, and for fitness. I kayak in Redwood City, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and Elkhorn Slough, but this place is only a ten minute drive for me, the price is low, and they rent early in the morning! They have high quality paddles, sit on top and sit inside recreational kayaks, and plan to expand with a few sea kayaks, paddle boards, and eventually add some tours. Park at Laine's, and they will drive you and kayak(s) about a block away to the boat ramp, and pick you up when you are done. The Yelp site is good to keep tabs on any temporary special posted hours.They live next to their shop, so if you find it locked during their hours, just call them or knock on their door. Perhaps few people are aware of the opportunity to see baylands nature and wildlife so close to home. I hope to see their continued success, because this is an important resource for the South Bay/Peninsula/Silicon Valley area. read more

They have even opened up early for me, which us really not heard of any more. The store is always clean, the product is fresh, and their prices are very reasonable.
