Came in for an HPA tank refill, wanted to ask if this was even done at this shop. Service: Wasn't even greeted on walking in. As I approached the counter the gentleman answered a phone call and while telling me he'd be with me in a second. I hung back waiting for him while he was on his call. All of a sudden mid-call he tells me they don't fill those there in a straight up way. No explanation, no guidance, just continued on his call ignoring me. I thanked him and walked out. I took a "Discover Scuba Diving" class yesterday at Diver Dan's. It's $40/person, which is divided into $20 for the registration fee (credit card acceptable over the phone) and $20 directly to your instructor (cash, Venmo, or Zelle strongly preferred). These sessions are very popular, so I recommend making an appointment ahead of time as they limit the class size to 8 people. I'm someone who's not very comfortable in the water, but my friends wanted to do scuba diving on our upcoming vacation so I decided to take this class to experience what the basics of scuba diving was like. My friend and I got to learn from John K and Steven (third instructor I couldn't catch the name) and I can't say enough about how professional, knowledgeable, and patient they are with their students. During the pool experience part of the class, they never rushed us to do the skills they demo'd to us, but patiently encouraged us to keep trying until our attempts were satisfactory and they gave us a pass for each skill. When I started diving in 2005 I took my dive lessons from a small Hayward shop that I drove by everyday on my commute, and I was hooked! When I asked my instructor what gear would be best for, she wrote down the name and address of a dive shop, and asked me if I could meet her there. We met at Diver Dans mid week and I learned what a great shop Diver Dan's is, what gear variety they had and how knowledgeable the team is. Monterey cold diving was just a couple hours drive (and where everyone goes for certification), so i could do two CW dives with my local dive shop on the Peace Boat or shore dive with a local Monterey dive shop DM every weekend to get my experience faster. I returned to Diver Dan's to try on and possibly purchase a warm water wetsuit as I was ready to take the plunge to warm water dive 'wherever'. I returned again to purchase a lighter sister Zeagle travel rig for warm water diving and the young asst manager (Steve?) helped me again. I've got all my gear now but Diver Dan's has always been on my radar anytime I'm in the Santa Clara area or browsing their trips abroad, online! I went to Diver Dan's for the first time on May 30th, 2024. I am going to Hawaii for the first time in August. I wanted to get snorkeling equipment. I ended up purchasing a mask with lenses having a 2.5 prescription and a snorkel and a hair protector pad. I spent a good amount of money. The saleswomen was pretty rude! I left with a bad feeling! I decided to return the snorkel however, it was a week passed the 15 day "return for refund" date. i had been dealing with some health issues and I couldn't get there to return the unused snorkel. The same rude saleswomen answered the phone and said the manager would only do a store credit! No flexibility! I don't need anything else, nor would I ever purchase from them again! They stink! Hello Dan, I'm sorry that you feel that my review was unfair. I realize your retu4n policy is on the receipt. I do fell 15 days is a short amount of time, however, it is your policy. I do stand by my experience in your shop! You can defend your position all you want, however, I am expressing my personal experience in your shop! As well as my friend who was with me. I do not trust this shop, also double check your invoices (see image attached)! I serviced my regulator and BCD here, and found an O ring in my main regulator damaged once I got in the water. The equipment was working perfectly previous to being serviced. In addition I was charged 3 times on my invoices for the same bcd inflator valve part, and had to call in to be refunded. My partner bought a bundle of equipment as well, and the clerk did not put his owd course dvd we paid for in the bag, then treated us suspiciously when we returned to get it. Not to mention instructors telling awkward jokes about women and their bodies, making this place uncomfortable. read more

I worked with Dan to get a DUI CLX50/50 drysuit; he was extremely responsive, knowledgeable and helpful. Dan patiently answered my many questions over the phone about the drysuit. I took the plunge (excuse the pun) and purchased the drysuit. Dan promptly shipped it to me in the mail; it arrived in two days and was exactly as described and what I wanted! When I had a minor concern about the latex zip seals being new but a little deteriorated from storage and Dan immediately sent me brand new wrist and neck seals. I called this shop last week to arrange a drysuit rental for a class this weekend (at another location); spoke with two DIFFERENT people who both assured me that I would be able to pick up the size I needed this week. I double confirmed the date that I would come to pick up the gear, and they told me it would be okay. My instructor even called them to provide his NAUI number for the rental, and they told him the same thing. Cut to today, the agreed-upon time for me to pick up the gear. The folks at the shop told me that (1) all of the gear in my size has already been rented out, (2) it's never been their policy to reserve gear for specific days, and (3) they can't help me. Totally understand that policy, however it's not what TWO different people told me and my instructor a week ago. Major inconvenience, considering my class is in two days. I was able to arrange a last-minute rental at another dive shop, but this was not a good experience. I've heard this shop has great instructors, but I will not be back to give them business. Edit based on Dan's reply re: coming in on Tuesday to rent gear. That was never explained to me by either of the two employees I spoke with. I suggest you clarify that upfront with customers next time. read more

July 2021... Our teen boys are enjoying their SCUBA diving lessons at this dive shop. The pandemic has wound down and they are completely booked a month or so out for lessons now. We bought all our gear under the guidance of one of the knowledgeable employees there. They have very flexible practices that allowed our boys to swap out their gear any time leading up to enduring the scuba lessons. Apparently the owner, "Diver Dan" is a very humorous teacher. The boys are enrolled in the weeknight scuba classes which run for two weeks Monday through Thursdays, leading up to their check out dive in Monterey on a Saturday and Sunday. The classroom sessions somewhat alternate with the pool sessions, building up their knowledge and skill at a comfortable pace. read more

Just finished my certification! Woo. Took the accelerated weekend class. I bought all the gears recommended for me. Yes yes, you could see it as they're trying to one up the noobies. While that maybe true, I see it as a good investment. I, for one, hate using someone else's boots or google and snorkel. Side note: the classroom can be super cold, layer up! Honestly, I should've watched the videos first. Then went back to the book and do the question. Would've made my life a bit easier and efficient. But that's just me. All the instructors were pretty chill. So happened that the class I was in turned out to be one of the biggest they've (9 in the pool, was about 11-12). That was super packed but it still worked out. They also let you do a different ocean dive dates, which I opted due to other engagements on the pre selected weekend. ----- Ocean dives. Mark is the best! Got my scuba diving license here with 4 other friends! My diving instructors were T Cotter and Dan P. This is a trusted place, I also bought my fins, dive bag, snorkel and mask here. It's cheaper than what I've found online. You can feel the passion for scuba here; you can see the employees' faces light up when they talk about it so I love that! Only downside is that the communication about the course isn't so specific. Their website misled me to believe that it was shorter because it denotes 3 dates of in person training when it's actually 5 days. Let it be known that the accelerated course is two full weekends; first one is Friday/Saturday/Sunday at Diver Dan's. Second weekend is in Monterey Saturday/Sunday. Employee for the equipment sales side is very helpful. However the rental section is horrible. We had multiple equipment failure we need to constantly return for exchange. They also seems do not follow the air tank safety check, it was pointed out by another local shop that the certification is long expired. I would not recommend at all. So at first I was pretty skeptical about this whole scuba thing. I didn't think it would be nearly as much fun as they made it out to be, and the class would be just a lecture with some laps in a pool. It turned out the class was great, I learned a ton, and maybe even made a couple friends in the process. First, the shop has too much stuff to spend money on, so there's that. Hide your money if you go in there. Second, this isn't a Walmart where they have express lanes. This is a hobby that involves time and research, please don't do this if you're in a hurry. Third, listen to what these guys are telling you, they have kept the doors open a long time by doing their customers right. We took the open water class and did the classroom and pool at Diver Dans, as well as renting equipment. We had a few minor issues with rental gear and getting the class moving, but nothing that wasn't easily solved. Our instructor (Dan - aka Dad Jokes) was our lead, with John (k) and Gar (W). We couldn't have had a better set of instructors. They were patient and explained every step and made everything simple. We had total comfort in everything we did, and they kept us rolling with one liners (sometimes 2 liners) all day. We finished out our class with the Open Water Dive in Monterey (with DM - Richard and DM - Steve) and it was a fun experience for everyone. Tons of dive time, and lots of saltwater rinses. Afterwards I realized that no one is a special snowflake, and these guys are speaking from experience on every bit of information they give you. Seriously, listen to what they say. And all that scary stuff that freaks you out, these guys made it easy and fun. It was a great experience and I recommend everyone go try this. It's something you'll be able to experience that not many people will. How many people do you know that can go hang out 30 feet under water for 30 minutes and stare at fish? I am starting a scuba course on Monday. I originally went in just to be fitted for a mask. Matt did an exceptional job walking me through the different items and price points. He was patient and cared more about finding high quality equipment that I could use for years to come than he did about selling me the most expensive product. I've enjoyed scuba diving for a very long time. My wife and I dive together in advanced conditions. Keeping our life critical gear in excellent operating condition is paramount to health and happiness. Diver Dans is a full service Dive Center that has a great selection of new dive gear and the expertise and ability to perform critical annual servicing. Our regulators, computers and BC's are 10 years old and continue to perform flawlessly. Our annual service on our Scuba Pro equipment was prompt and reasonable. All serviceable parts that were replaced were saved for us to verify completion. I was invited to personally test function of everything using one of their air tanks before taking the gear home. I just completed the PADI Oxygen Provider Course. This was an excellent course taught by Matt Vandercook.  It was worth the wait to take the course with Matt. He was very competent, and an excellent communicator.  He had excellent and well organized presentation materials.  He had an understanding of the material that was consistent with the PADI manual but had expertise and insight that went beyond what is in the manual.  He is an excellent teacher. I take this course every two years to keep myself current.  Still I felt that the course was more than a refresher.  I gained knew knowledge and understanding that was consistent with the subject. I plan on taking other courses.  Instructors that I have a good learning experience with I tend to go with again.  Matt is one such instructor.  He is professional and delivers quality. I look forward to taking future courses with Matt and Diver Dans.  I would also endorse Matt to others. Very nice place to learn scuba diving. I completed my PADI certificate here. The staff was super nice, especially Rich. They patiently help you to get all the equipments and make sure they fit. Also if they don't fit under water and you can exchange them anytime. Diver Dan's has a swimming pool onsite and classroom on the second floor, so the training session is all done at one place, very convenient! The coaches are very nice as well. I just had an unpleasant experience with diver Dan's. I went to the store before making a trip to Hawaii, and I was very clear with the owner that I needed fins for snorkeling. When I used the fins, I found them to be too stiff, too long and unsuitable for moving slowly around coral. When I brought them back to the store, the clerk told me once fins are in saltwater they cannot be returned or exchanged. Of course this is a problem, first because they don't tell you that upfront, and secondly how else can you test the product without taking it in the water. I'm grateful to have a store driving distance from my home, so I gave them three stars rather than the one or two that reflect my level of satisfaction with this transaction. read more

These guys are great! I went in to try and figure out what I wanted in terms of a new regulator and computer. James spent a ton of time with me discussing options. Told him I wanted to think about the options and check reviews on line. Went back the next week and met with Dan and planned everything out. He built and tested my rig, then when I mentioned a BCD he told me I get 20% off everything if I do. I even added an analogue gauge which meant he had to redo the config on the regulator and he did it with a smile. On top of everything, all their prices were cheaper than internet prices plus an expert puts it together for you and makes sure everything works before you leave. My daughter (11) and I finally took the Open Water course after a 1 year COVID delay! We signed up for the course in February of 2020. Dan spent a lot of time with us in the shop patiently going through all the gear choices in preparation for our course. Unfortunately COVID hit and everything shut right when we were scheduled to take the class. Dan and his team was phenomenal throughout the past year with their flexibility and scheduling. We finally took the confined water portion of the class with John, Gar and Dan G. They were flat out awesome instructors. Thorough, fun and patience are how I would describe them. We are doing our open water portion as a referral in Hawaii and Dan G. went out of his way to help with a few details of our open water course in Hawaii since he knew people at the dive shop out there. First, the good. I love the ocean. Sea life fascinates me. That said, I had been sitting on the idea of actually getting myself a scuba certification. Never put it into action. My wife who had had her PADI for a while kept egging me on. She searched around and found Diver Dan's. They offer this free Discover Scuba class which I agree is a great way to let newbies get a feel of what it's like scuba diving. So, she signed me up for it. A taste of scuba got me hooked. I decided to go for the Open Water class. Gregory and Daniel were both great instructors. They were thorough with the pre-dive essential learning materials. During the dives, they made sure each student was fine by constantly checking on us. Their confidence made me feel safe in the unknown abyss. Eventually, I met all the requirements and got my PADI! I finally got to experience first hand what my wife and other divers had been raving about. We have since explored various waters and encountered scores of sea animals. The beauty underneath is indescribable. 5 stars for the classes and instructors. Now, the not so good. Unfortunately, I have to average the final rating to 3 stars because of their sales clerks in the shop. We were just newbies browsing all the different gadgets and encountered sales people with serious attitude. It felt like new divers were not wanted or appreciated in their clique. Definitely not a way to welcome business. Since this review is a long time coming, I really hope these sales associates have found other pastures or learned how to act towards customers helping pay their salary. read more

My friends and I signed up for the PADI Open Water Course (Weekend Accelerated Format). We had 3 classroom sessions, and 2 pool sessions and 2 days of Ocean dives (Total of 4 dives). We bought our gear(snorkel, mask, boots, gloves, ​and fins) from the store and they walked us through each gear and explained the benefits of each specific brand which helped us pick the right ones. Our instructors were Brian And Carlos and they were both amazing! Brian is very patient and explains every detail very thoroughly. Carlos makes it a point to let us keep trying until he thinks we have perfected the skill (which I think is great!). They're also very experienced and well aware. We also had Noe for the pool sessions who was great too! Overall, very glad that we chose these 2 weekends for our course since we were certified by these awesome instructors. I am so grateful that I took my scuba diving certification here! My instructor Greg Olson and his team was freaking awesome! More importantly they were so patient and cool, and just really get that people have different skill levels in the water, and they adjusted the class accordingly. Till this course, I had a major fear of deep water. So when I bought my gear for the course, the staff spent almost 2 hours with me picking out the right equipment for me (fins, mask, gloves, snorkel, boots.) If you take the open water scuba course, you want to buy your stuff. I know I thought the same thing... Just rent it. Nope... You have to be as comfortable as possible in the water. And that includes the equipment. I am so god I did!!! Just made a huge difference. The staff pays so much attention to you as a student, that they can pretty much tell you what will work for you and what won't. I had my choices of places to learn how to scuba dive. I chose Diver Dan's simply because these guys/gals realize you are a person looking to have a cool experience underwater in the safest and fun way possible! One more thing... The place is as clean as any other dive place... And the pool is rented out my swimming and let me be frank... It's a great place to learn how to swim, dive, and any water skills you can think of. The shop itself has a great looking set-up and plenty to explore in terms of gear, gadgets and doohiggies all relating to SCUBA diving. As for the service, it is hit or miss. My husband and I have had two guys who were very friendly and helpful, but everyone else has a passive aggressive tone or is outright pompous. There is a very strange vibe when certain combinations of people are working the floor. We have been in the shop at least ten times, and although we are not regulars compared to many, we have been there enough to know this is NOT our favorite shop. We go because of convenience, selection and our free tank-filling cards we received with our tank purchases. If the service improved, we would give them more business, but since it's inconsistent, we only go when necessary. Until we find a favorite shop to frequent, we try to make more online purchases so we don't have to deal with as much inadequate customer service. read more

Very surprised to read the negative stuff about the sales clerks. We walked in, what couldn't have been more than 5-10 minutes before closing time. We actually had to ask if they were still open. The friendly male sales clerk said 'Sure, come on in!'. We were leaving for vacation and of course, put off getting our snorkeling equipment until the very last minute. The sales guy showed us their fin, mask and snorkel selection, explaining briefly the differences between certain pieces of equipment and gives some pros and cons, we always had the feeling that we can could inquire for more info if need be, he was super friendly. 2 pairs of adult fins, masks and snorkels later, we moved onto kids' options for our 6 year old. He let our daughter try on several different goggles and masks and explained which he'd opt for (it was rather past closing time at this point, but we weren't remotely hurried along or rushed by him or anyone else in the store). After we got our daughter sorted, my husband picked out a PADI binder (much needed as his dive log was starting to look neglected and sad), and then we agreed that we'd need a decent but compact bag for all this equipment, which was no problem either - the great sales dude showed us several and we picked out the right one for us. There was never any upselling, which was treat. He even showed us certain items that we were on sale and explained why they were on sale. We spent several hundred dollars and walked out very happy customers. If we ever want to 'gear up' with diving gear or revamp our wetsuit/drysuit wardrobe, our first stop will be Diver Dan's. Given the fact that we walked in so late, and the quality of service was so awesome, I really don't see how I can rate this place lower than a 5 star. Also, the actual selection is pretty vast, it's a big store, and the fact that I was able to find adult-sized fins for my really small (size 5 on a good day) feet, was a huge win. All of the purchased gear held up beautifully throughout our trip and was pretty much used every day, no complaints there or, on any other aspect, for that matter! read more
