Went on a Sat night asked for a table of 2. Was told hour and a half wait. Hostess claimed we are a popular place. I then saw 5 tables empty asked about the tables. Hostess claimed we don't have the staff. Wait your a popular place but your under staffed on a Sat night. Maybe this is a way to get people to spend time and money at the bar waiting. So we took the bait. After 5 minutes we had seats at the bar. We then ordered some apps. The service was so slowski waited 15 minutes for refills. Then we had to turn our wooden tray with handle facing bartenders used to serve the Antipasto Salad hoping the bartenders would run into it and see we needed refills. Nope waited another 10 minutes. Then when we asked for the check the bartender put it on the credit card. Sorry but I didn't ask to have it on the card I ASKED FOR THE CHECK. What part of that do you not understand. Food is ok but hey its a common man establishment. So don't expect anything exciting. The devil eggs on the antipasto were awful, your meatballs had no favor, the oil you give at tables with bread was just oil and had no favor. Basically this place lives off the locals who have no taste. As for travelers I cant see any coming back. This place is a scam. Nice location, bad service, and common food. Fire your chef the menu stinks. I just purchased a 2nd home in Meredith and sorry Lago or common man your off my list and I will never recommend your places to any of my guest. I give one star because our table service was awesome but again the food was plain. Maybe were use to dining in fine establishments in the North End of Boston. So its hard to compare. It only got 2 stars because the decor and lake side dining make it something to consider. Granted be I know I'm in Meredith, NH and not on Prince St in Little Italy or the North End of Boston... but the food and service were just disastrous. I kind of knew what to expect when my friend suggested it for our group because I saw that it was part of the Common Man chain. A beloved chain of restaurants through out NH that for some reason beyond my comprehension do well with bad service and mediocre grub. Chronology: Party of 8 arrive. Seated w/o menus or water on table. Indoors. No windows open. It is hot as blazes. Wait 10-15 minutes.... hail down waitress asking for menus and water. Remark that it is hot. She agrees. (Nothing is done.) 5 minutes later she finds out waitress and brings us menus and 3 bottles (their equiv. of pitchers) of water for the table. Note: no ice. but did bring a huge bowl of lemons when I asked for some. We chugged the water down. No waitress for 10 minutes. I got up, went to bar, had all 3 bottles refilled, and returned. Our host in Meredith had to go find the waitress and say we were ready to order. We ordered. I shared with friends the following because we were too hungry and couldn't decide: carbonana, bolongese, flatbread special pizza. The pastas were alright- nothing remarkable or particularly impressive. Very fake Italian. The flatbread was good- a tasty combo of treats. Arrived on a Saturday night at 8pm in late fall. Good atmosphere. Hostess was excellent should have been working at a five star restaurant in the city! Server was pleasant and on top of things. Drinks arrived quickly and orders were placed. Mrs got the got the shrimp Alfredo. I got the Bolongnse it was good. Only issue was it was warm but not piping hot. But was slightly pleased as I know they didn't put it in the microwave the dish. All and all after reading the reviews and considering the location I'm in. All in all great experience. read more

I arrived at Lago with a large group - around 8 people. We were in sort of a rush because we were headed to go see a movie across the street. The server was great at helping us get out of there in a timely manner, without making us feel rushed. We enjoyed our meals, got our desserts packed up to go, and left in plenty of time. The food was delicious, the decor was pleasing, and the coffee... well they give you your own press so you can let it steep as long as you'd like. It's yummy. I've only been there once, but next time I head back home I will see if any of my friends want to meet up at Lago. read more

Just what we were looking for! For years, we have struggled to find good food in the area. The staff was excellent. The general manager and our server (wish I knew their names) were fantastic. We went here with my in-laws while taking a few days of around the 4th of July week. Unfortunately we did not know they had call ahead. We had a 40 min drive to get here so that would have cut our wait in half. Luckily, there is a nice patio off the seating area where we could sit and have some drinks before dinner. So after about an 1 1/2 hours we were seated. The place was very loud and hard to hear the waitress tell us the specials. Atleast we had a nice view of the lake. We ordered drinks which seem to take forever to come out and then we finally ordered. It was busy but I don't like waiting 10-15 mins for drinks and to place my meal order. I ordered the braised short ribs with risotto and my wife got the chicken marsala. My father-in-law got shrimp scampi and my mother-in-law got the Pollo Milanese. As I mentioned earlier it was loud and they served my mother-in-law the wrong meal probably because the waitress could not hear her. It took a few minutes for them to make her the correct meal, but no issues with the meal after that. The short ribs were good, it was kinda like a stew beef. The risotto was ok, it was little plain. It didn't taste bad, but it didn't taste like much either. The chicken marsala my wife got was good, but she didn't rave about it either. No complaints from my father-in-law on the shrimp scampi which is good cause he is rather picky. Overall this place is really just a 3 star kinda place, but fools you into thinking it is 5 star with the fancy Italian menu and location on the lake. It's not a bad place it just not a great place that makes you want to come back again tomorrow. On a side note if you wait for a table on the Patio you can get some entertainment from the people looking for dock space for their boats as they try to dock for dinner. Good things: The space is really nice, it feels like a rustic tavern from the 1700s. Cozy, fantastic view. Great wine menu. Great service. I like the scope of the menu. Not good things: unfortunately, it's the food. Spaghetti alla Siciliana was just heaped with anchovies. With this kind of pasta dish, you don't have to kill it with anchovies, and they could be blended in with the butter or oil to create a kind of sauce. We ordered the special entree of the night, a ribeye. First of all, it was the thinnest, lowest quality ribeye I've ever been served except in a Denny's or similar. No flavor, no marbling. I honestly couldn't have told you it was a steak if I closed my eyes and took a bite. The parmesan risotto was undercooked. Crunchy bits, no appealing. Risotto should be creamy and not crunchy. Dessert was ho-hum. Honestly tasted as if it had been frozen or was just a bit old. It was the strawberry cake with whipped cream. Lago tries to do everything right, and they do get a lot of it right. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my idea of a Trattoria simply because of the food. read more

We had an awful experience here. Okay it was a Saturday night and they were full to the gills. All of our staff were very young and evidently inexperienced. The table had been cleared of the previous diners' dishes but was filthy with crumbs and spilled drinks, as was the floor and the chairs. The hostess who brought us to the table did not care to concern herself about the mess, we had to repeat our request to the server to get the table wiped. The waitress messed up the order and one of our dishes did not arrive for over half an hour. The very young manager apologized several times, once she asked if she could bring me something else and I said "like what?" And she answered "I don't know." By that time I would have eaten anything she could have brought me. All they did was take the late item off the bill and the bill was still incorrect when it came. Pretty lousy. read more

I have been to Lago 3 times and enjoy going to all of the Common Man restaurants in Meredith as they each have their own unique vibe. Lago can feel casual, but also a place for special occasion dinner in the area. It has a fantastic lakeside location. I like the ambiance, lighting, and it has a vibrant feel when busy. I've had good service here. I appreciate the system of calling about 30 min ahead of time to put your name on the list if there is a wait, as this helps reduce the number of people waiting around in person for a table. Many of the tables indoor are next to windows that are open and have screens, which helps with ventilation. The food is very good - pricey but similar to other nice restaurants in the area. I recommend the pretzel bites with cheese as an appetizer and the salmon over couscous for an entree. The fresh bread served with cheese and olives is also very good. Entrees are nicely plated and well flavored. I will definitely come back here when I'm visiting Lake Winnipesaukee again. read more

Lago!! Now that I just joined Yelp, I must write a review on this place. I have been here for the past 3 years for the annual Winnipesaukee wine festival which has come to be one of my favorite summer events! My father happens to perform the day before the festival at Common Man's Town Docks playing bass usually with a couple other guys, singing and dancing having a great time! It's always in June, so it is a great summer kick-off! (Tickets available online!!) Lago is located inside the Inn at Bay Point right on Lake Winnipesaukee with perfect views (they have a waterfront dining room and patio open in the summer), cozy Italian inspired décor, and just overall great atmosphere. Last June, a friend and I went over to Lago after the amazing eat and drink fest at The Inn at Mills Falls for late night food and cocktails. We immediately ordered the carafe of red sangria which is strong and provided us each with 2 glasses, and is very reasonable around $20. With our sangria, we each ordered the appetizer size Spaghetti con Pesto which was more than enough food and was so good others at the table immediately ordered the same thing. The bartender was SO amazing, even took our picture even though the place was completely packed! This place is also great for large groups, we had about 15 people in our party for dinner and there was more than enough room for us. The other patrons were good sports even though we were roaring with laughter the entire time we were there. Lago = 5 stars in my book, and if you are too full with food and wine to go home, just stay in a cozy room upstairs! I prefer the ones with the fireplaces even in the summer. read more

Well , the atmosphere and service are wonderful! Love the view of the lake , fireplace and service. We started with delicious complimentary olives , bread and rosemary infused olive oil with grated Parmesan cheese . Shared a generous portion of the Insalata salad . My boyfriend had the meatball with prosciutto and potatoes and it was delicious and the presentation was fabulous! I had the chicken Parmesan and it was not what I expected . The waitress did say it would have a bone in chicken for flavor but I didn't like the flavor because the chicken was not baked in the oven with the mozzarella and Parmesan. My boyfriend liked the flavor and chicken Parmesan because he likes baked chicken so I gave him all the leftovers. The Common Man chardonnay and ale were very good too. The cheesecake dessert was delicious too with complimentary lemon cello . The final bill was a bit pricey too. We do like the atmosphere and service so we will try it again. read more

My wife and I went here last night for a date night without the kids and were very disappointed. We sat at the bar and while the bartenders (3) were friendly, they went missing for large sections of our stay and we needed to be aggressive to get them to notice us/take orders. Normally, I'd understand this IF the place was busy, but it was a Monday night and there were free tables and seats at the bar. We ordered drinks and were ready to order dinner, but the bartender that had helped us was MIA. We eventually flagged down another bartender and he took our order. The calamari was good, but our dinners were not. My wife got the caesar salad with salmon and while the portions were great, the salmon was flavorless. My blue cheese and walnut salad was tasty, but the steak tips I ordered on top were miniscule. Several were so small there was no need to cut them before eating. We complained to the bartender and he offered to ask the kitchen to try again on the tips while I enjoyed the salad. Unfortunately, the re-do suffered from the same problem, with very different sized pieces of steak, resulting in wildly different doneness. The larger pieces were medium rare and the smaller were medium well. To top it off, the steak tips were also flavorless, needed salt to even be edible. We ended up taking most of them (and a hunk of the salmon) home for our dog. The manager came over and apologized, comp'ing my dinner. They also give free shots of limoncello and white chocolate bits after dinner (a nice touch). In the end though, this might be our last trip to Lago. They have a beautiful view, but indifferent service and underwhelming food is too much to stomach for the prices you pay here. read more

Typically I love The Common Man family of restaurants. After a nice meal with friends we were very disappointed and frankly surprised when our server "chased" after us as we exited claiming we didn't leave a tip. After reviewing the tab, the server realized we did leave a 20% tip. My question, "Is this really the reputation CMan wants its restaurants to project?" We were embarrassed that 1, someone thought we hadn't tipped and 2, chased us for what is supposed to be at guests discretion. Great food, bad manners. read more

Very disappointing dinner experience at Lago on 3/10/11. On the plus side they have call ahead seating so our party of 4 didn't have to wait when we arrived at 7:30. That should have been the first sign. Our first choice for dinner, O Steak & Seafood in Lakeport had a 90 minute wait. Our waitress was a train wreck. She kept trying to up sell apps and forgot to bring one of the cocktails we ordered. When the meals arrived they brought three of the four melas and said that the fourth would be right out. After five uncomfortable minutes of my friends meals getting cold I asked the hostess, who was setting an adjacent table, to check on my meal. She was extremely rude (eye rolling) and went somewhere. My meal finally came but by that time everyone else's meals had been sitting for almost 10 minutes. Since it's not hard to cook fish I can only imagine that the kitchen made a mistake. We also had to ask the manager to bring our wine since our waitress forgot that too The manager did comp our drinks which was the right thing to do. Overall very disappointing experience at Lago. We have been loyal patrons of the Common Man family of restaurants for 20 plus years. Our past two experiences, Lago and Fosters Steakhouse, so far in 2012 have left us wondering what is going on. Where is that unique spark to the CMan food that always managed to deliver classic food with great flavor and a twist. We called and asked about "Call Ahead Seating". They said there was a 45 minute wait but they would put in our name (this was 6:15pm). We arrived 30 mins later and the host said there was a 45 min. wait. We let him know that we called ahead anticipating the 45 min wait as we were told. He once again said that there was a 45 minute wait. We asked why it had jumped to 90 mins and he replied that "other people had come in prior to us". Doesn't make any sense to me other than they are trying to get people to spend money in the bar while they wait. And there was absolutely no place in the bar to sit. We left and went to another local restaurant and had a burger instead of the nice dinner we were anticipating. We are year round residents and frequent Common Man restaurants on most weekends. Very confused about what "call ahead" seating really means?!?!? Did not seem to make any difference in our wait time. This really "steams" me for lack of a less offensive word. read more

My wife and I went here for her birthday and had a great evening. We probably had the best bread and oil we've ever had; I think it was rosemary olive oil. I really like the free cheese and crackers, and after dinner chocolate espresso beans and lemoncello; it really makes this place a great value. We sat by the window with a great view of the lake. It was a little noisy with a large group right next to us, but we could talk easily enough. For appetizer we had arancini with lobster if I remember correctly, which I loved. I ordered one of the beef entrees, which I recall being somewhat dry and not as flavorful as I was expecting. We ordered an unusual dessert which I don't remember the name of, but we loved. It was kind of like chocolate pudding but much firmer. We'll definitely go back next time we're in the area. read more

This is a lovely location and a good menu, but we did not have a great experience. We sat outside which was right on the lake and very nice, though the hardwood chairs were shockingly uncomfortable for a dinner place. A storm blew up so they accommodated us to move inside, which is a bustling, noisier but ok atmosphere. They made us cash out the entire meal including tip before we were even served because the outside seating was different management or something even though both were part of Bay Point Inn hotel there. Then we were just settling in after a lot of unnecessary chaos to our quite tasty appetizers when a waitress walked up with our entrees. We told her we were not at all ready and she hastily took them back. They came back a while later when it was clear we were ready and served the entrees. Now the entrees were a stuffed haddock, said to be local fresh fish and a summer special. It was not only not very hot, maybe our original dishes in a warmer?) but it was not good. The fish was not firm, stuffing heavy and the orange hollandaise sauce frightful. We didn't want to make a scene though i wish we had sent it back, but ate as much as we could take and then just up and left having already paid. It started off so promising and ended up with such a bitter (literally) taste in our mouths. We will not be back. It was a badly coordinated service and a bad entree that was not designed or executed well. Too bad for a place with a lot of potential in a very cute town and pretty lake. read more

We dined at Lago's on our wedding night, a choice that we did not regret. The self-serve cheese and crackers concept was a nice touch. The bruscetta caprese was delicious, perhaps the highlight of the meal. We ordered a bottle of riesling wine, because it was our wedding night afterall - as it turns out, the manager at Lago decided to comp our wine as a wedding gift. Very classy. For my entree, I ordered the Bistecca di Lago, a steak with gorgonzola-butter. Satisfying. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. Overall, a very pleasant experience. read more

Came here for dinner over the weekend. Lago is a decent, average place. Complimentary bread & olive oil was standard, but delicious. My friends cocktails seemed to be "ok" and I had quite a selection to choose from of wine. Bruchetta was good, and my chicken marsala was good-not great. Very disappointed. We were staying at the Baypoint Inn, and Lago is located in that hotel. When we first walked in, the ambiance and smell were phenomenal! It was about 6:30 New Year's Day and the place was hopping. We were able to get drinks quickly and 2 seats at the bar in about 15 minutes. The female bartender was great, very attentive to everyone despite clearly being busy. Once we sat down and started going over the menu, that's when things started to go downhill. The good bartender was apparently going off shift and a young male bartender was there with the help of what appeared to be a manager. It had definitely slowed down by then. My boyfriend went to order the NY Strip Steak with the pan jus, one of his favorite cuts of meat. The bartender came back a few minutes later and said they were out of that item so he ordered something else. He then returned a few minutes later and said they did have one in the kitchen, so my boyfriend went with his original order. The piece of meat that came out was NOT a $34.00 NY Strip Steak. It was a flat, odd-shaped fatty piece of tough meat sitting in in what looked and tasted like warm ketchup- not pan jus. My boyfriend was able to eat about a third of the steak, chewing and spitting out most of it. When pointed out to the bartender when he cleared our plates (after they sat in front of us congealing for a good 20-25 minutes after we were done eating), he looked at the plate, pushed the meat around with the fork, dumped it in the trash behind the bar and that was it. The steak was on our bill as 'function- other' at the price of the NY strip steak. I had ordered a bottle of wine a $65.00 French Chablis that I rarely get, but figured I would splurge a bit on New Years. The female bartender is the one who opened the wine and set it up in a chiller on the bar in front of me. Halfway through dinner, the male bartender came over to top off my glass, over-filled it spilling it onto the bar, then grabbed another glass and poured some into that glass, spilling more onto the bar. NOT how to handle wine when someone buys a bottle, and certainly not a nice bottle of wine. Half a glass got spilled onto the bar and he just made a joke about it. We were very disappointed, expected better quality and service for the prices and ambiance we first encountered. I'd be willing to give it another try, but probably in the spring or summer when there's more staff and ones who are trained in fine dining and not like they are working at the 99. read more

The service was good especially for a party of 11. The location and views are obviously great. The food however was hit or miss. The ragu alla bolognese was poor. The sauce just didnt have a great flavor which stunned me for a meat suace. The flat bread pizza was pretty good. The Chicken Parmasean was fine but my stance is I dont want to pay 15$ for something thats just ok and I can easily make at home. I might give it another try at some point although there are far beeter places when visiting the lake for vacation. read more

We really enjoy Lago. Our server, Sean was great! The extra dirty martini was icy, large and perfectly mixed. The appetizers were yummy especially the burrata with fig jam. The jam has to be house made it was so good. Our entrees were good. The highlight was the pork belly special. The only issue were the gnocchiand the risotto were very under season and over cooked. That's the only reason they didn't get 5 stars. Service is outstanding though! read more

My parents ate dinner at Lago during a getaway weekend up to the lake. They reported that the restaurant overall was "truly amazing." Also, the food was delicious. Their waiter, Tim was very attentive, cordial, friendly, polite and professional. Tim possessed all of the kudos that one could think of to describe a fantastic waiter. I'm not sure why Lago only has 3.5 stars . I recently went here with a large group and it was fantastic. The apps were all good and we ordered one of each, and my meal (ahi tuna special ) was excellent . My husband ordered the short ribs and the dish was very tasty. For dessert we ordered the flower pot and it hit the spot. In addition, the service was great. We would go back again! read more

I'm usually in NH in the summer and this restaurant on the water is a favorite. I try to aim for the half price wine nights when going for a group dinner. I once went on a slow night with a girlfriend and just sat at the bar chatting with the nice bartenders. I'll be back this summer. read more
