I came across Kuro Neko doing a google search for custom cakes in Columbus. I was looking for…read moresomething different than the normal flavors that I always see, I wanted something to catch my eye, and Deborah's website came up. After looking thru her website, she had some unique flavors for her spring 2021 Seasonal Flavors. I'm always a huge fan of any local business who's mission is the source locally as much as possible to support small businesses. And, besides, who doesn't want to try a Japanese-inspired cake from a independent baker who's name translates to Black Cat!! I ordered one of Kuro Nero's seasonal special cakes - 8" Matcha & Azuki - to try, with a Saturday pick-up at her home bakery. S/O to the fantastic smooth-as-butta icing design! The simple yet elegant decorations topping the cake were perfect. The matcha cake was simply scrumptious! The batter portion is soft and fluffy, not dense, and subtly sweet, not overwhelming with fake, cheap sugar. The middle section is azuki - a sweet red bean filling. The Deborah's matcha buttercream icing is pillowy soft. I do not like dense icing, and thick levels of it is a personal turnoff. I loved the matcha buttercream consistency of this icing: Lite on the tongue, a perfect complement to my decadent dessert! I'm assuming Kuro Neko's business is a large portion of wedding and special event cakes, as her photo gallery of past cakes on her website is quite appeasing to the tastebuds. After seeing, and tasting, my cake, I'll definitely order from Kuro Neko when I get a sweet craving for a unique cake option!!

My husband and I are fans of wedding cake - we knew we wanted one, but finding a cake studio from…read moreout of state for a wedding can be tricky. We were looking for a unique cake in terms of flavor and design. In Persian culture, rose water is used frequently in pastries and cakes and, we wanted the cake design to reflect elements of a traditional Persian love cake with pistachios and rose petals. The cake is also important for the cake cutting ceremony (aka the knife dance). When we found Kuro Neko, we were so excited about the strawberry rose flavor and the gorgeous design of cakes. Deborah is the sweetest human and was so flexible with us and incredibly creative. She sent a sketch of the cake, and when we fell in love with it we even decided to add another tier. She also delivered it on our big day and sent a kind note beforehand. Deborah is insanely talented and our guests were in awe of the beautiful cake she designed and gave high compliments on how delicious it was. Hire Kuro Neko for your wedding, party, etc. Don't think twice.

YE Gurl Says: Sweet Recon at Kennedy's Kakes…read more When you're sourcing bakers and cake makers for an event, sometimes the research turns into a sweet field trip. That's how I ended up at Kennedy's Kakes. The name was already familiar -- I'd seen them at other events as a caterer and liked what they offered -- but I had no idea they were so close to downtown. Once I realized that, I made a quick stop during a coffee-and-sweets run. And let's just say the "quick stop" turned into a sampler situation. Once inside, I saw the lineup and decided to build a box so the beau could taste-test with me later. Into the box went: * **Love Bites** * **Milk Chocolate Millionaire Bar** * **White Chocolate Millionaire Bar** * **Persian Love Cake** (the rose petals pulled me right in) * **Two rum cakes** -- because Caribbean heritage loyalty runs deep All of these were destined for our weekend sweets day, cut in half and shared like a proper tasting. For the immediate moment, I grabbed an oat milk latte and a cinnamon roll. Solid pairing, no complaints. The space itself was welcoming and the folks working there were genuinely lovely -- always a plus when you're trying a place for the first time. Later that weekend when we split the sampler box, everything held up exactly the way you want a bakery spread to. Mission accomplished: Kennedy's Kakes is officially on my list of potential bakers. YE Gurl says: If you're downtown and looking for a strong combo of pastries, baked goods, breakfast sandwiches, and coffee, this is an easy stop to add to your rotation. And if you're doing cake research like I was... bring a box and build your own sampler.
