I'm new to Maryland with my job so had to try and find my new Mexican food spot when I come and visit and this is it. It was a Wednesday but there was only one other car in the parking lot so I just sat at the bar. Dave and Iris waited on me and were very welcoming. It didn't seem like the chips were fresh because it was so dead but I'd expect them to be warm on a busier day. The guac was good and salsa has some kick. I asked Dave what's his face tequila he's into and he said he used to drink the Cabo Wabo quite a bit so we tried that. I love chorizo so anything with it goes to the top of my list. They had a lot of different options of food but I went with the El Gordo burrito. The chorizo was perfectly spicy and I used my leftover guac to put on top which made it perfect. Dave was incredibly nice and we talked about all sorts of things. This was a place that gets five stars because the people working put it over the top. They played music videos from YouTube where I learned who Romeo Santos is so good music too. Worth giving it a shot for sure. read more

My husband and I went there for a late lunch last week. The service and food were excellent. We were served hot chips to dip in a amazing salsa. The salsa was not too spicy, just perfect. I met a friend for lunch today in Owings Mills. She suggested this place. This was the most uninspired Mexican food I have had in years. It was lunchtime, but only two or three tables were filled. Our server was pleasant and cute, but her command of the language was clearly inadequate. My friend ordered chicken fajitas. I ordered the chicken quesadilla from the lunch menu. I got fajitas too. Maybe everybody gets fajitas. And the chicken strips & veggies were pretty tasteless. The refried beans were the consistency of gravy. Chips and salsa had no flavor. At the end, when the check came, for about $38 for two, we planned to split it. We asked the server to bring us change for a $20 so we would have smaller bills for the gratuity. She did not understand. She seemed to think the $20 was her tip on the $38 order. So I asked for a manager, who explained to her about "cambio," and then we got change we needed so we could start over. Whew. Not a fun outing. read more

Wanted to have a bite (used carryout) while watching the Ravens game at home. I thought we'd try this, wanting some nachos supreme....and chili Rellenos. Also, a steak (tough-burnt) enchiladas. I loved this place!!!!! Soon as I stepped out of my car I knew I would love this place once inside everything was confirmed 10 times over. They have great music playing outside to awaken your spirts and to prepare you to be transported to some authentic Mexican dinning. Once inside the colors.....oh the colors are everywhere and your eyes just dance over all the beautifully decorated chairs and booths. To the bar I strolled, the bar area is huge and very well stocked. The menu is several pages so order a beverage then take your time to peruse the menu and read all the descriptions. So many tasty options it's kind of hard to choose (that's why you come back many times to try something new each visit). I went with the Hawaiian fajitas. The description sounded tempting and the actual presentation was amazing. The dish hit all the main points; looked good, smelled good, tasted good and was well worth the $23. On a weekday night, I met up with friends for a quick bite. It took some time for us to be served, however. They were busy, but the restaurant wasn't even half full. This is a large space with TVs, a bar, a lot of noise, and music. When we were served, I found the frozen margarita to be large, but far too icy, and the chalupa was messy and suprisingly, not much different from a taco - served without the meat, tons of lettuce. The menu is wide and diverse. Too many options to do so much so well, I think. Atmosphere is pretty important to me when dining. So I was pretty disappointed with how bright and large this space is. Certainly, it is great for crowds and large get togethers, but not cozy meet ups. I will probably visit again for another shot. read more

Pretty cool spot but I have mixed feelings. I came here to celebrate cinco de Mayo and I saw some really great reviews. The drinks were excellent but my entree didn't meet my expectations. I ordered the steak tacos and some of the steak was cooked too long. On the flip side, the shrimp dip is highly recommended and it's a perfect appetizer to get if you want some light but filling at the same time. I would say it's just ok. I ordered as a first try using DoorDash. I got 3 tamales, rice, refried beans, guacamole, queso and chips, and sweet tea to drink. To start the tamales had so much sauce and seasoning on them that's all I could taste they were not good at all. The guacamole had started to brown I tried to mix it up thinking maybe it's just the top but it was a consistent color throughout. La tolteca is a Mexican restaurant located on Reisterstown road. I visited here with my boyfriend on a weekend evening and we were literally the only people there which kind of scared me. However, the food wasn't bad! We were started with free chips and salsa, which is always appreciated. I ordered the horchata which came in a huge glass about the size of my head and i never thought i would finish it but it was so delicious, i actually did finish the whole thing. My boyfriend ordered the strawberry margarita which was huge as well but also equally delicious. We shared the Jalisco sampler which came with cheese quesadillas, stuffed shrimp, taquitos, stuffed jalapeños and a chicken chimichanga. After eating this sampler we were honestly stuffed. The quesadilla and the stuffed shrimp was delicious, my favorite things from the sampler. I ordered the street tacos for my entree and the meat (chicken and steak) weren't too seasoned, the tacos were about a 5.5/10 in my opinion, very bland. My boyfriend ordered the chori pollo (chicken topped with chorizo with a side of rice and refried beans) it came with a tortilla on the side as well! He liked his meal. Overall, i would return to order the quesadilla and the stuffed shrimp and for the horchata for sure. Location is easy to find, lots of parking available, staff is friendly as well! read more

Visiting the area for a conference. Found La Tolteca based on the online reviews, but should have known something was up when there were only 10 vehicles in the parking lot at 630 on a Friday. Ambiance is nice. Place seemed clean. Waitress must have been new because she didn't know much about the menu. Food was ok (the guac was great and a decent portion for the price). Prices were good for the quantity of food you get. My only complaint...the margarita. My friend and I both ordered frozen margaritas. I think they forgot the tequila because usually by the first few sips I can feel it, but after drinking the whole beverage I think she gave us a virgin and not an adult beverage. The beverage price was less than what I usually pay for a margarita, so maybe you get what you pay for. Wouldn't go back. read more

I've visited other La Tolteca locations and this one has a similar vibe. The staff was very friendly both times I've gone. Chips, salsa, and dip come out immediately. The menu is extensive and I love that there are so many combo choices (although that can be overwhelming). One time we had the tortilla soup and it came out quite lukewarm/cool. That was our only disappointment. Otherwise, our fajitas came out sizzling and the portions were generous. With so many Mexican places nearby, it can be a tough call on which one to go, but La Tolteca is a pretty solid pick. The tableside guac is delicious! read more

Okay so I'm really confused why this restaurant isn't 5 stars ?!? I've been here 5 times and it's been absolutely amazing every time!
