My boyfriend says this is the best Mediterranean patisserie in Brussels! It has a variety of Pastries inspired by the Mediterranean and Northern Africa. If you've never had these types of pastries, I would highly reccomended you try. They are often very petit, with intricate twisty shapes. Very different from something like a French pastry. We stopped in on a weekend trip. It is right near the Grand Place, so mark this spot on your itinerary around the palace. The shop is like a scene in Harry Potter. The pastries look magical, glittering with different colors. Sits perfectly in with the surrounding architecture. The shop keeper was very nice and efficient. She spoke to my boyfriend in French and me in English. I bought two pastries. I round pastry with pistachios, and a pastry similar to a fig newton, but with dates. Both were amazing! read more

Hands down the best dessert shop in Brussels. The pistachio roll was so good. I have never had anything similar in my life. It was mind blowing. Literally everything was delicious so just ask for their best items for the day and then pick 10 more items and you will be the happiest person ever. read more

This place is spectacular! The hazelnut Turkish delight is one of the best things I've ever eaten. The Baklava are impossibly crisp, perfectly balanced and the nuts must be treated with some sort of magic spell to make them stay so crunchy. One of the best assortments of middle eastern sweets. The sweets are fresh and taste wonderful. Whenever I visit Brussels for work I drop by here and pick up some sweets to take back to the states. It's hard to imagine this place exists with all the chocolatiers around but it's definitely worth a trip, especially if you are over the chocolates and want something different. read more

This was my Patisserie Orientale experience in Brussels. Found it by accident Saturday, tried to find it Sunday and couldn't, gave up and then rediscovered it. A patisserie could be your ordinary French bakery, but the Orientale elevates that concept. The dessert mounds were so colorful. Dates, figs, almonds, walnuts, pistachio, and more are featured here. This is the place for nifty dessert creations. Here were Saturday's selections: A bird's nest with almond "eggs", an almond and pistachio carrè fantaisie (fancy square), green pistache & amande bourse (meaning bag), and l'orange corne de gazelle (horn of gazelle). My favorite was the bourse for taste and design. Second was the square dessert for the fruit sweet underlayer. Sunday's adventure led me to a larger tasting. Workouts were in my future. From top left working clockwise we have a twisted pastry with sesame seeds and a syrup (possibly date?), pastry stuffed with crushed nuts and date or fig paste, almond date hearts with some framboise in the filling, amande and mandarine bourse, pistache and noix de coco rocher (boulder), and a packaged dessert of crushed petals around a dense date and pistache mixture (bonus citrus notes). These selections were based on color and potential ingredients. Afterwards, I wanted to magically transport this place back to Porto then to Colorado. Winners were the twisted pastry especially with the bring you down to earth sesames, the bourse thanks to the amazing mandarine flavor, and the rocher (ahhhh... coconut). read more

I found this place accidentally wandering around the Grand Place, and thank my lucky stars that serendipitously led me to this store. It has a fantastic selection of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean sweets as well as the odd Indian one (jalebi, which I haven't tried as get it from the UK). My fave has to be the rose with pistachio pastry, but frankly I have never had any selection from here that tasted bad (which is great, cause they don't give you samples, so sometimes I have chosen stuff and hoped it was ok and I haven't been disappointed yet). I can tell from the taste that they use honey, figs and dates as sweeteners rather than sugar, and the nuts used in the baklavas have always tasted fresh - I have been to other places were they were stale. The service is also very nice and the sales staff are good about explaining ingredients if you spot something unfamiliar. read more

Patisserie Orientale is a wonderful little shop near the Grand Place that retains the charm of an authentic Brussels patisserie amid the throng of tourists and chain sweet shops. Ironically, the baker and owner is from England, but he has been in Brussels for more than 25 years and, as I said, makes the items himself. (So many of the chocolate shops and patisseries in high-tourist areas are chains that get their items from some central factory. Not this one.) The owner was reserved when we walked in, but quickly warmed up and was very pleasant to us as we chatted about his stacks of delicious baked goods (of which he is deservedly proud). The items themselves were as good to eat as they were to look at - a huge variety of fruit-, nut-, and chocolate-filled delicacies that made choosing very difficult. read more

This is one of the most exquisite pastry shops I have ever been to in the world. I stumbled upon it almost a decade ago and stop by or request pastries from anyone I know visiting Brussels any chance I get. Located near Grande Place, I never thought I would find a beloved middle eastern dessert place but life is full of surprises. I have tried almost all of their pastries over the years save what seem to be the Ramadan inspired desserts I just saw there recently. My favorite pieces are with pistachios, almonds, orange, and cranberry. I would recommend opting for the box options where you can fill a box for different price points. OMG! This place is (almost) devine. Their sweets not only look gorgeous, they taste great, too. Don't worry. They're not as sickly sweet, as most (Americans) would expect them to be. (Many sweets and cakes in the US tend to be very very sweet; so much so that the sweetness can overpower any actual flavors one is hoping to taste.) Everything at this little shop is amazing. Attention lovers of food with rose flavor: This place offers several sweets flavored with rose water or rose petals. -- Rose flavored items tend to get harder to find outside of the Middle East, India and the Mediterranean. Seems that westerners don't care much for it and stores and restaurants therefore decide not to offer any. (I recently asked for a rosewater lassi, at a highly rayed Indian restaurant. It wasn't on their menu and the non- Indian server had no idea what I was talking about... but the Indian chef made me one anyway.) read more

This store is filled with mediteranean desserts. Each mound you see is a different dessert, even though they may look alike. The desserts there are incredible. I thought that it would be excessively sweet (like many baklavas I've had in the past) but these ones were not overly sweet at all. It was just sweet enough. They are just amazing. Definitely drop in. You'll have trouble deciding what to get. read more

This is a lovely shop...pyramid after pyramid of beautiful colors and shapes are the first attraction in the window. Brussels is a chocolate lover's heaven they say, I can live without chocolate if there are no nuts. I'm a nut lover and while in Brussels La Rose de Damas is my heaven. When there is espresso and tea service, I will camp out on the doorstep sampling all the wonderful treats. Worth the wait in line. read more
