I visited Mary Chocolatier on a Wednesday early evening. When I first passed by, it was very crowded so I came back later when there was no one else in the store. One of the workers, Sebastian, was very friendly--we had a lovely conversation about the chocolates & traveling. This was the second chocolaterie I visited that evening, but I'm excited to report that it's now my new favorite. I got a variety of chocolates--I even brought a friend for a second trip later on so they can try it for themselves & I picked up more treats to try for myself as well. I came back one more time to buy some of their products to bring home for my friends in California. I wish they had a location closer to home, but this is definitely a chocolaterie I'll keep returning to whenever I'm in Brussels. read more

I appreciated her help with everything. The chocolates are delicious. I made a box of 18 chocolates for $34. They have other create your own box options as well as prepackaged ones. I came in to buy some chocolate to bring back home for a gift. The receiver loved them. On to customer service. A young Asian girl was working that day. She was great. Very knowledgeable (they both were) and helpful. There was also a much older lady. Said she's been there forever. She was a bit too much. She ruined my friend and I's experience. She was so up in our business, so in your face, condescending to the person she was helping and kept butting into our sale while the younger girl was helping us. The older lady kept undermining the younger girl as well as her own customer. She asked her customer why did you have to buy a build your own box if you don't know what you want? She even told him to order down the line instead of picking randomly from the case! The store was very nice and clean. Just wished that older lady wasn't there that day. read more

Food: We tried their Byzantine, which is a dark chocolate with pistachio almond paste garnished with a whole pistachio, as well as a plain 85% dark chocolate to truly taste the quality and flavor of their chocolate. Unfortunately, I was disappointed as their chocolate wasn't anything special. Flavor was okay, but their chocolate wasn't as smooth or velvety as I would have hoped for. I also wasn't a fan of their Byzantine chocolate as the pistachio almond paste was very overpowering and I rarely tasted the chocolate. I have to say that I've had better chocolate in the States, which is very unfortunate as Belgium is known for their chocolate. Service: All staff were very knowledgeable about their chocolate. Mary's chocolate shop is the number one chocolate shop in Belgium. I can clearly see why too! Now while they don't give you samples, I can assure you that any chocolate you purchase, will be some of the best chocolate you've ever had, I promise. As someone who loves chocolate. I was literally obsessed with this place. The price tag is a little expensive, but it's worth every penny. You can purchase pre-packaged chocolate, or purchase by the weight. I opted to purchase by the weight and try different pieces. It was the best!! you can even ask them for their recommendation, and they'll give you options based on your preferences as well. There at many shops in town but this one was a cute little small nook in the corner. You can miss it so be on the lookout. read more

Did I really not review my favorite (and only) Belgian souvenir? On our way back to the tour bus, we stumbled across this place and was immediately welcomed by the wonderful saleswoman. She was very personable and patient, taking in our considerations for gifts to bring home. I ended up buying a small box of assorted chocolate squares to share. After sampling a few of the squares over time, I can confirm that they are delightful. Smooth, creamy, not too sweet. The flavored options (orange, earl gray) weren't overpowering. And the white chocolate square was buttery. But I also expect nothing less from a Royal Warrant chocolatier. Honestly, if you can make it to Brussels or Bruges and want to try the real deal with the Royal seal Belgian chocolates, I cannot recommend this place more! read more

I was told that if I was going to Brussels, I absolutely HAD to try Mary's chocolates. It did not disappoint! Superb chocolate. I definitely had to bring some home with me as a souvenir. They also sell lots of different packaging that made the perfect gift to bring back for family and colleagues. The shop is fairly small and very serious. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the chocolates and percentage of dark, etc each piece offered. I highly recommend making a personalized bag of bonbons (which they charge for by weight)....it seems to be both the best deal and the simplest way to get exactly what you want. Was the favorite (by a narrow margin) of the chocolatiers tried on this trip by a narrow margin. Pricing is reasonable and you are able to get choose-your-own boxes in a wide range of sizes, particularly on the smaller end with only a half dozen truffles, where as some others seem to have a smallest box of more than 20. Let's be honest, everyone has personal tastes, so it is entirely understandable if Mary isn't one of your favorites. 4.5 stars, not quite sure I want to round up just yet until I can better get a feel for their consistency. read more

Located closed to Manneken Pis on a Sunday, they should know that the shop would be busy with all the tourists. But there was just 1 staff working and of course there was a long wait for everything. Boy, pricey but delicious chocolates (although I have to say, the chocolate quality didn't exactly BLOW me away). I got a large dark chocolate chunk with hazelnut, pistachio, and almond. Best chocolates in Belgium. If you special order, you can specify the % of chocolate you want. There are a couple of stores in Ohio that sell and ship their chocolates but the only time I ordered from them, the chocolates were NOT well packaged and therefore were kinda beat up inside the container. Shipping however was much cheaper than shipping from Brussels. At these prices, chocolates should arrive in perfect condition. read more

There are many shops selling chocolates and pralines in Belgium, including some of the world's biggest producers. However, I personally prefer some of the smaller, local chocolatiers. Mary's pralines are, without doubt, comparable to the well-known brands. After all, they are a Royal Warrant Holder of the Court of Belgium - which is a great testament to the quality of their products. If Mary's pralines are good enough for the King, they are definitely good enough for me! I do appreciate the little signs explaining what's in every praline. It is also helpful that the shop assistant is present to identify the contents of the pralines and finding the ones that I really like (the dark chocolate mousse). My only regret - I wasn't able to buy them all! I love this particular Mary Chocolatier as it is conveniently located around the corner from the Grand Place, which is great for a tourist or a day-tripper. read more

Mary Chocolatier offered good chocolates - very smooth and creamy. It was a bit pricey but compared to Neuhaus, I much preferred the chocolates here so I was willing to pay the difference. However, I enjoyed the chocolates from Dumon Chocolatier in Brugge much much better so I would recommend buying from Dumon if you are making a trip to Brugge. The wife and I were aimlessly walking the streets in Brussels when Mary's chocolates caught her eye. There was a wide variety of every form of chocolate on display. I was kind of a little tired, so I kind of just waited for her to pick different pieces to try and make her own sample pack. The cashier/server was great at answering all question especially since they had so many varieties and it was not clear what each one was. The wife settled on about 10-12 pieces to share and we went back to the hotel. Needless to say that the wife fell in love with Mary's chocolates. On our return to Brussels, we found another location of Mary's which was slightly bigger and had even more options and selection. This second location was also in central Brussels in a large shopping corridor that was partially indoors. They even had some hot chocolate, but we did not try any. We did however buy more chocolates for ourselves and also bought some to bring back for friends and family. The chocolate here is expensive but so good. All the packaged chocolates were adorable and make for great souvenirs. I tried a couple of truffles and my favorite was the earl grey dark chocolate. I spent the rest of my trip trying to find other chocolate shops that sold the particular combination but never did. The only downside is that the lady behind the counter was a bit curt. Sure, Godiva is available EVERYWHERE in Belgium and sure, it'll make a 'nice' present for your average chocolate lover. But there's not really anything special or 'new' that Godiva has to offer. Enter, Mary then. This smaller, couture brand of artisanal chocolates is the best option for those looking to find a special treat, unique to Belgium. I made sure to get a few boxes for friends and family back home, and nobody was disappointed. When you select your own box occupants, the staff lines it with the most beautiful tissue paper, and will helpfully (not pushily) make suggestions based on palette preferences. The chocolates are laid about on the marble bar in beautiful dishes...it's really an elegant affair. Finally, the packaging is so exquisite, that you'll want to keep the box long after its chocolatey residents have been consumed. She seemed annoyed to do her job which is helping customers. The place wasn't even busy as there was only one other customer there. She was even rude to them. It's really hard to not over-indulge in their chocolate! They have a really great vegan/non-dairy selection, so I ended up getting everything they (they had about ten different varieties). All the chocolates with hazelnut in it are just amazing. If you've ever had a ferrero rocher, it's like that, but without all the artificial junk and unnecessary animal products. Okay honestly. Mary is the best chocolate house in the world. My family is a Mary fanatic and every time I returned home, I bought pounds of chocolate for my family. It is especially suiting to Asian tastes because the Chocolate is not too sweet and their milk chocolate is just melts in your mouth. The important adpect for me is that i can taste the lightness of the milky Cacao rather than the artificial flavorings like you get at Leonidas. I recommend always getting the milk chocolates in the coin shape because just one piece was always enough to satisfy my chocolate craving without me hoarding the whole box and feeling bad about eating it later on. They also come is really pretty boxes and bags so it's really nice to gift it on special occasions. Yes it is expensive but the chocolate is worth the cost. But I especially recommend going to this shop. It is 2 euros cheaper than the shop in the gallery and they lady is nice enough to give everyone a free piece of chocolate when they buy one, something that the other Mary shops do not offer. They had tons of variety and the service was great! not overbearing where you felt uncomfortable knowing their eyes are on you 24/7 but they would make suggestions as they saw us picking up random things. There were words we didn't understand and they were more than happy to explain what things were and offer suggestions. I ended up picking up quite a few different chocolate bars to take home as souvenirs and of course for myself! My sister-in-law said the dark chocolate (noir 60) was the best thing she's ever tasted!
