The chocolates were silky smooth, and each flavor had its own distinct taste. You can immediately identify the different flavors, and each piece has its own unique flavor profile. We ended up going here through Hungry Mary's beer and chocolate tour, and this was the first stop. It was in the Royal Gallery which made for a very cool location! We tried 3 separate chocolates, and my favorite was the white chocolate pistachio. The others were both delightful as well, we tried a chocolate with nougat/nuts, and then a single origin chocolate. Really solid, high end chocolatier! Their dragees (chocolate covered peanuts) are really well done. These're labor intensive & rarely done right in chocolatier, but they do such a great job here. Never did I ever expect to have such a beautiful chocolate shopping experience! While traveling through Brussels, you have to purchase some chocolate. Visiting the galeries, we happened upon Pierre Marcolini. The store has a designer setup, with clean white lines and easy to view merchandise. We were immediately greeted by Debora. She was kind and extremely informative, taking us about the store and giving details and history for their assortment of chocolates. I had never heard such details about where and how chocolate was curated. It was truly fascinating! Truth be told, we'd already purchased chocolates to take home from a competitor down the street. But Debora's tutelage was so impressive that we could not help ourselves and ended up buying some of their specialty blocks from different regions around the globe - after sampling small portions of course. I'm certain that if it were not for being greeted by Debora, we would have browsed and left without making any purchases. She is a sommelier of chocolate! This was the store location I went to while I was looking for the Pis statues. I had this bookmarked because they're supposed to have THE best chocolates in Belgium and I LOVE good chocolate. The store is small but well-organized and spacious. They have chocolate bars, bon bons, truffles, chocolate powder, macarons, ice cream, etc. They use the finest ingredients and some cocoa beans they import from Madagascar, Brazil, etc. Belgian chocolatiers just have a knack for making something fabulous with cocoa. After buying a few items to try, I ended up buying more to bring home. They are definitely great and currently my favorite chocolates. I also got a box of macarons: pistachio, ganache, passion fruit, Speculoos, marzipan, yuzu, etc. The yuzu and Speculoos macarons were the standouts. Perfect texture, perfect subtle flavors that shine through, and a variety of options. If macarons aren't your style they also have a wide array of handcrafted chocolates and truffles. I don't even like sweets, but while in Brussels, it's difficult not to be enchanted with their chocolatiers. There are gourmet chocolate shops everywhere, producing excellent quality chocolates and confectionaries. Staring through the glass displays, one could get lost admiring the tiny edible works of art presented in each window. Before we realised what was happening, we were walking out in a daze with a box of 7 macarons (€2 each, so these beautiful two-bite treats can add up fast). Choosing our favourite flavour was great fun, but that feeling of having something truly special and magical really lingered as we savoured each one. Maybe it was the fact that we were giddy on vacation, or the 9% beers we had at lunch... but I could feel the care and quality in each bite. My only comment on them is that the texture wasn't consistent in every macaron. Some of them were perfect - crispy with that slight chewiness in the interior - while some of them were too soft. No big deal, though... we put them into the fridge and the next day, they were excellent. read more

The most wonderful floral decor and scrumptious macarons made this a perfect spot to grab some dessert and people-watch. A few things: (1) Although this is supposedly a popular Belgian chocolatier, I didn't find their chocolate all too enjoyable. Quite frankly, on the basis of chocolate, they would've received a 3-star rating in my book. If you're looking for chocolate, stop by the Neuhaus around the corner and you'll be far more pleased. (2) However, the macarons were beyond amazing. Having traveled multiple countries and tried macarons far more times than I care to admit, these were some of (if not the) very best I've ever had. They also store well! I was able to bring home a few boxes for friends and family to enjoy, and (unlike the popular Parisian Ladurée, these fared far better and maintained freshness for much longer). Not to mention, the fillings in these surpass any of Ladurée's buttercream. The tomato basil was a unique but surprisingly delicious concoction, and I much preferred the chocolate macaron to any of the actual chocolates sold here. Make sure to also try the black currant ("cassis") for a unique flavor that's a bit challenging to find in the U.S. You won't regret it! All that being said, despite my poor review of the chocolate, Marcolini's macarons more than made up for it. Within just a few short days in Brussels, I ended up making 3+ runs to Pierre Marcolini's just to buy more macarons and purchase a few boxes to bring back home. read more

They're 1.80 euro each or 21.90 euro for 12 or 12.90 euro for 7. I had the cassis, pistache, macaron du mois, praline, caramel beurre sale, speculoos, rose, citron, palet or fondant and of course the classic Pierre marcolini. Best chocolate I had in Belgium! We wanted to hit a few chocolate shops while we were here and went to Neuhaus but I had wanted to try Pierre's too - luckily the complex has a Neuhaus, a Pierres, and a Mary's so we were able to really compare all three easily! By far my favorite was Pierre Marcolini! I really liked and preferred the clean white modern look and thought the presentation was really nice. The shop assistants were great and super nice about recommending chocolates (I pretty much only got dark chocolate - personal preference). The chocolates themselves are a bit smaller than the other shops - but I honestly preferred that, I find it overwhelming eating a chunk of chocolate that's too big. You really can taste the quality of the chocolate and they were very rich. Flavor-wise it seemed to be a bit more traditional - no weird flavor gimmicks here. I really liked the recommended Pierre Marcolini ganache (don't quite remember what it was exactly but it was oval with layers of caramel and wafer). Overall, the quality of the actual chocolates was amazing - didn't think I would actually be able to tell the difference but it's clear Marcolini really does bring the quality. I recommend you try the 3 shops for yourself - but buy a few more at Marcolini ;) read more

Matthew was very knowledgable about the different beans grown in the different regions and Pierre actually has plantations in each area so he can control the taste of his chocolate! They don't have quite the extensive range of truffles but have several dark barks with the beans from the different regions. I'm not a fan of French macaroons but got one cause I was told I couldn't pass it up and it was so good I went back and bought a while box! Delicious!! read more

There are so many chocolate shops in Belgium. Honestly, it must be so hard to be a chocolate maker in this country. However, there are a few who appear to have risen to the top of the chocolate making chain, and one of those is Pierre Marcolini. I read a few rumours before I visited the store, one was that they're the best as they're the only ones who are involved in the whole process, from choosing and roasting the beans to packing up the chocolate at the end. This could be true. The other is that they sold out to Nestle a few years ago and haven't been as good since. This could also be true. We walked for ages to get to the store and once we got there we found two versions, one was the dessert area which also sold some chocolate, and the other was this big store. And it is big, two stories in fact! If you ask you're able to sample a small bit of the chocolate but you have to ask for it and then you feel a bit cheeky and pressured to buy (other stores will often just push a tray in your face and offer a sample). I tried a very dark chocolate piece. I like my chocoalte very cocoa-y, dark and not too milky. I was told that was one of the most intense types they had. I was a little disappointed. It didn't seem that cocoa-y, or that intense. I guess I just expected something a little smoother, a little richer.... a little darker. It was nice enough, but not nice enough that I would stop and buy it. The shop itself is very impressive and the staff were good to deal with. They have a huge variety of chocolate in all different kinds of packaging but of course it is reasonably expensive. We were catching the Eurostar that night. Of course there was a Pierre Marcolini store at the Eurostar terminal too. Definitely good chocolate, but in Belgium, it's all good! You just have to find what you like best...! read more
