Items Selected: Madagascar 49% Sipping Chocolate steeped with Madagascar Vanilla Bean with 'Cralin' and Chocolate Crispy Brussels Style Waffle with Chantilly and Melted 76% Chocolate from Costa Rica Vietnamese 80% Caramel Duck Speculoos Truffle Poire William Truffle In a city where every street seems to feature a chocolate shop (or three) the decision of where to invest can occasionally seem daunting, but claiming a bean-to-bar concept with the factory mere steps away it would be hard to fault any aspect of Frederic Blondeel's operation, the man self-described as a "roaster" as much as a chocolatier turning out world-class confections with a small café menu, as well. Sporting the standard collection of tablets, pralines, truffles and likewise, spreads and hot chocolate mix also available with handmade ice cream sold by the scoop in house, it was with a cup of the signature milk chocolate along with a waffle and hand whipped Chantilly that the tasting began and complimented by truly friendly service both options were reference-standard for the region, the creamy cocoa upgraded through stewing with whole vanilla beans while the crisp waffle sand beneath dark sauce and ethereal Cream. Passing on cookies, brownies and Fondant, though all offered temptation, remaining space was invested in four more chocolates to go with the crispy one served alongside the hot chocolate, the Vietnamese 80% absolutely pure, potent and silky while the caramel duck was equally textbook, Poire Williams offering a boozy center to one truffle while the first of many Speculoos experiences was had by way of the other.

Gorgeous chocolates in different flavors that taste amazing!

We found this gem on our chocolate/beer tour. Of all the places we went and all the chocolate that we ate, this was my favorite. The chocolates were not only beautiful, but so delicious. This shop was not as pretentious as some, but higher end than others. I really loved trying the variety of chocolates made out of different cacao beans.

LEGIT hot chocolate. They have five different kinds of hot chocolate, ranging from 63% cacao to 100%. The 63% is more reminiscent of your standard hot chocolate, the 85% is richer and darker, and the 100% is almost like Mexican hot chocolate. Each hot chocolate comes with a chocolate pairing and water to cleanse the palate. They also have different flavors like saffran, cinnamon, spicy hot chili. At only 3.50 euros per cup, the cost isn't much more than your standard Starbucks. Located right by the pseudo-canal, this is the way to enjoy your hot chocolate. Bonus points for free wi-fi!!

I have a sweet tooth, but I always prefer quality over quantity. And Frederic Blondeel is one of the most fulfilling place in Brussels in this regard... to the point, I want to eat everything they have each time I go there! Ice-creams, hot chocolates, cookies, madeleines and financiers, raw chocolate, truffes... all looks so good and smells so good! So far everything I have tried was top quality and a pure moment of heaven. And the prices are very fair! Among their very creamy all natural ice-cream (2,5 euros/1 scoop), my favorite flavours are ginger, hazelnuts and pistacio. Pistacio has not this too often seen flashy artificial green color, but a very pale green, and comes with caramelised pistacio in it... yummm! And Frederic Blondeel and its team are so generous that they give you not only a giant scoop of ice-cream but also an extra homemade chocolate and ask you if you want to dip your cornet in their chocolate fountain. I have also tried their amazing Italian rosted nuts (5 euros/350g) with their subtle wood flavor, that transform my normal muesli in something perfect. I offered their cookies, notably the one with a buttery nutty sablé dipped in dark chocolate (4 euros/150g)... so decadent, so good. I have heard that the chocolate-dipped speculoos are also very tasty. Now I have to tried their chocolate bites and bars, what a challenge :-) The team is very nice and helpful, in particularly Frédéric Blondeel himself when he is around. Two last things that are good to know: here you can ask to take away their excellent hot chocolates that are served in the tea-room a few doors away, and they are open late, sometimes after 8 pm (in summer, not all the time), which is not usual in Brussels!

Love love love this place! The smells coming from the store are divine and the taste of the chocolate and ice-cream is bar none. Service is also super friendly, quick and the staff are very helpful and their passion god the product totally shines. Whenever I want to give someone a gift of "good" Belgium chocolate, this is the store I come to and buy from.

Waffle. We might have been one of the last customers of the day, but it felt like it was baked in old butter. Not that good.

Delicious chocolate chocolates & chocolate milk. I haven't tried the ice cream yet, but the chocolate milk itself is a reason to look for this place. I tried many different chocolates milk, and some of them are better than the others. Costa Rica & Java are good, I would not have Madagascar again - it's so thick that the spoon stays and you will not be hungry for many hours. Which is a waste, in Brussels, which so many nice restaurants to try ;-) The waffles are not exceptional.

    - Price/Quality: I tried the ice-cream, and one scoop is €2,40. When entering, it becomes clear that this is a prestigious chocolatier so the price isn't surprising. - Health: Belgian ice cream based on chocolate... - Pleasure: The chocolate is very brilliant, and it's the best part of the dessert. - Quantity: Like always in these glaciers, a small scoop on a cone. - Variety: The usual but I advise you to absolutely stick with the chocolate flavors.

This place doesn't mess around with chocolate. They offer a large selection of high quality chocolates and teas. The ambiance is a little disjointed, but overall the place feels upscale and perfect for groups of 1-4. We had Madagascar and Peruvian hot chocolates and thought they were decadent and devine. It is pricey, but the quality is worth it.

Great place to watch the rain fall as you enjoy some hot cocoa and complimentary cake. Every hot chocolate varied by the thickness and flavor behind it. It becomes overwhelming over time but that's why you just want to take your time and sip away.

Frederic Blondeel is a classic chocolatier in Belgium, but I decided to try out their Summertime tea - a blend of apple, cinnamon, vanilla, and strawberry. I was expecting an apple-pie tasting drink, but was pleasantly surprised by the natural sweetness of the vanilla! Instead, it was predominately a creamy tea, with the slightest hint of tartness from the strawberry. Bonus: every order of tea is served with a complimentary side of a caramel milk chocolate and a raspberry-infused dark chocolate!

Great Chocolatier, service somewhat slow, great tasting food, I failed to taste their hot chocolate, ordering tea instead.

In the Grand Place these chocolate shoppes were lined up almost next to each other. Neuhaus was the first and ultimately the finalist. I appreciated the welcome as I came in, an overview of the history as I drooled over the well stocked cases. Of course there were too many flavors and types to pick from. Overall my taste buds did its job and the flavor combos, the snap of the chocolate and taste won me over to Neuhaus. I ended up customizing the boxes according to the choices dictated by family back home which covered pralines with caramel, yuzu, coffee, speculoos, etc. In the end buying direct avoided tariffs and what I saved went to more pralines but the tradeoff was a fuller luggage. Neuhaus had a frequent buyer program that I signed up for. Not sure how much I'll make use of it.

Was so looking forward to our return trip to Brussels and visiting Catherine's. Over our week long stay we managed 3 visits to pick up cheese, freshly sliced deli meat, bead and made to order sandwiches. The cheeses that we selected were so very fresh and the selection to choose from was amazing. Of course my favorite was the truffle. We picked up sandwiches on two occasions and they were basically the same. The second one Catherine added a new little taste with the addition of three small roasted peppers. We had forgotten to ask for arugula and Catherine asked if we wanted it on this one...what a memory. Catherine's is a small place and always very busy. Quality shines throughout. The customers are almost all locals...another great sign. We noticed that when there were about three people inside that the patrons formed a line out of the door. Think out of respect for Catherine. Wish we had had a quality shop like Catherine's in metro Atlanta. We would drive to experience this and here in the hustle and bustle of Brussels there is a gem. Highly recommend. Prices are extremely reasonable. Can't wait to return...sooner than later. Thanks Catherine.
