Came to Frederic Blondeel after reading a bunch of reviews and blogs, however it was quite a trek from the city center. We got the hot chocolate which was absolutely delicious and came with a delicious praline. However when we tried to purchase it, they actually don't sell that specific piece of chocolate, so we purchased a box of some other type of chocolate which was not as good. The store was actually completely empty when we first got there, there were no staff and no customers so we were very confused and standing in the middle of the store. However, after 5-10 minutes, someone appeared and helped us. Overall, I am glad we got to try their hot chocolate! read more

I'm honestly much of a chocolate person... but Frederic Blondeel's hot chocolate IS the business. I came to this small sit down shop as a dessert treat. Belgium is known for chocolate, but I honestly only purchased anything chocolate here at Blondeel. My friend recommended I come here and specifically check out their hot chocolate. I went with their signature Madagascar Vanilla Chocolate and it was super delicious. It wasn't too thick as I expected. It was smooth and creamy and not TOO chocolate for me. (I really don't choose chocolate often). Service here was definitely perky and nice. The man that was working at the time spoke English and French fluently and was very nice. This place is a short walk to a cathedral that is known for their outdoor urinals and a super short walk to Mercad Nordzee (bomb seafood). read more

Location: Right on the Quai des Briques, which is a great place to relax - take in the sun, people watch etc. The place: The interior is simple and has ample room but I sat outside to enjoy the weather. They have a handful of tables right outside their shop and since no one was there when I arrived, getting a table was easy. The goods: First of all, I have literally bought and eaten chocolate in every Belgian city I've been in. This place is hands down, the best that I found when it comes to chocolate. I initially ordered 4 pieces (yes, you get to choose) with a Moroccan mint tea, but the chocolate was so good that I bought more before I left. The tea was excellent too. I tried a variety of flavours from their dark chocolate collection and really, there wasn't one I didn't like. They make everything themselves including the ice cream and it's obvious they use quality ingredients. Service: Great - the server was friendly and he even had me try a traditional Belgian cookie (Simonis?) when I told him I didn't know what that was. Price point: Remarkably inexpensive! Highly, HIGHLY recommended! We tried a number of chocolate places during our visit and this was my absolute favorite. The chocolates here are so well made and the single origin dark chocolates are so pure and flavorful - true to the flavor of the region and didn't taste like the bitter dark chocolates that you'd imagine at all. We didn't plan to pick up anything from Brussels but ended up walking out with five boxes of assorted pralines to gift to our family because I don't believe they have boutiques outside of Belgium. read more

LEGIT hot chocolate. They have five different kinds of hot chocolate, ranging from 63% cacao to 100%. The 63% is more reminiscent of your standard hot chocolate, the 85% is richer and darker, and the 100% is almost like Mexican hot chocolate. Each hot chocolate comes with a chocolate pairing and water to cleanse the palate. They also have different flavors like saffran, cinnamon, spicy hot chili. At only 3.50 euros per cup, the cost isn't much more than your standard Starbucks. Located right by the pseudo-canal, this is the way to enjoy your hot chocolate. I have a sweet tooth, but I always prefer quality over quantity. And Frederic Blondeel is one of the most fulfilling place in Brussels in this regard... to the point, I want to eat everything they have each time I go there! Ice-creams, hot chocolates, cookies, madeleines and financiers, raw chocolate, truffes... all looks so good and smells so good! So far everything I have tried was top quality and a pure moment of heaven. And the prices are very fair! Among their very creamy all natural ice-cream (2,5 euros/1 scoop), my favorite flavours are ginger, hazelnuts and pistacio. Pistacio has not this too often seen flashy artificial green color, but a very pale green, and comes with caramelised pistacio in it... yummm! And Frederic Blondeel and its team are so generous that they give you not only a giant scoop of ice-cream but also an extra homemade chocolate and ask you if you want to dip your cornet in their chocolate fountain. I have also tried their amazing Italian rosted nuts (5 euros/350g) with their subtle wood flavor, that transform my normal muesli in something perfect. I offered their cookies, notably the one with a buttery nutty sablé dipped in dark chocolate (4 euros/150g)... so decadent, so good. I have heard that the chocolate-dipped speculoos are also very tasty. Now I have to tried their chocolate bites and bars, what a challenge :-) The team is very nice and helpful, in particularly Frédéric Blondeel himself when he is around. Two last things that are good to know: here you can ask to take away their excellent hot chocolates that are served in the tea-room a few doors away, and they are open late, sometimes after 8 pm (in summer, not all the time), which is not usual in Brussels! read more

I tried many different chocolates milk, and some of them are better than the others. Costa Rica & Java are good, I would not have Madagascar again - it's so thick that the spoon stays and you will not be hungry for many hours. Oh my. This place is FANTASTIC. A real find in the chocolatier stifled Brussels. With a chocolate shop on every corner, you'd be hard pushed to try them all, but this place is definitely one to go to. In fact I went twice and I probably spent less than 24 hours in the city in all. With beautifully made cakes, inventive handmade chocolates, delicious ice cream, high quality ground coffee and a fascinating selection of teas and hot chocolate blends, this is really something else. The surroundings are amazingly calm, the ladies who work there take complete pride in what they do, and everything that is delivered to you is startlingly intricate and most importantly, tastes fabulous. Impressive choco place in a fish market square by the shuttered St. Catherine. Come here for the hot chocolate (or 5), stay for a chocolate square or two! Of the 5 presented on the menu at the time we visited, only one was closest to a "regular" hot choco you might get in the states (the Madagascar flavor). Another was a little spicy, another with some milky froth and saffron, and one with lemon grass that vaguely reminded me of thai soups somehow. But the cup that I chose for myself was the very thick 100% cacao with honey - definitely fun to try, but I don't think I'd order it regularly. It wasn't as bitter as I feared (try tasting a normal block of 100% to see what I mean), but they don't use too much honey to make it taste sweet, either. You could eat that one with a spoon if you like. I like the fact that they also provide two chocolates and a cup of much needed water with your cocoa drink. One of the chocolates is a special pairing with your selected flavor, another is a nutty praline common with all flavors. I also tried an earl grey chocolate. That small 1.20 euro piece was subtly flavored, perhaps too subtle. Would re-visit this place to see what new hot chocos they are dishing out and try some more of their chocolates if I am ever in town again. The woman new her stuff about the chocolate and handled all of them with care. it's really beautiful the element of care in someone's work done with pastries. Unlike other countries who just throw them in a container and send you on your way. One of my favourite flavours was Basil. Frederic Blondeel is a classic chocolatier in Belgium, but I decided to try out their Summertime tea - a blend of apple, cinnamon, vanilla, and strawberry. I was expecting an apple-pie tasting drink, but was pleasantly surprised by the natural sweetness of the vanilla! The lady working the counter didn't want to answer any of my questions when I asked her what was their specialty flavor, what do most people order and what she recommended. She was really impatient and mumbled answers that I could barely hear. The place was also empty when we walked in and I really wanted ice cream so I sucked it up. If you get a small 1 scoop cone, it comes in a teeny tiny cup. Go for the 2 scoops and you get a much bigger cup. The ice cream was pretty delicious. I got the coffee and chocolate. It was pretty creamy so the ice cream on its own is worth trying. It's right across the street from the train, down the block from Chinatown and about a 10 min walk from the center. read more

Attention, hot cocoa purists: this is THE place to go when in Brussels. This small chocolate shop/tea room is hidden between slightly touristy seafood restaurants on the Marché aux Briques. It is popular, so you may have to wait for a table, but it will be worth it - and don't let the army of pralines and chocolates on the counter distract you! The menu offers at least four different hot chocolates, each with alluring nuances like vanilla or honey. This is incredibly subtle and generous stuff, with taste developping in your mouth in waves going in all directions. Resist the temptation to rinse your palate with water, and you'll find you're still discovering a lingering scent a long time after you've finished your drink. The whole atmosphere is usually on the quiet side, but not because of snobbery (they're quite friendly and welcoming): it's simply because your drink will commandeer your whole attention. This is chocolate that won't be ignored! We didn't try the chocolates themselves, however tempting they were, and backed off the plain, dark tablets at the last minute, unusual for us - food snob alert: for that sort of price (and we're talking quality chocolate here), soy lecithin is a sore sight on the ingredients list. :o) read more
