Well their Cochinita Pibil is amazing and their tamales, especially the queso con rajas was delicious and so homemade. Watch out for any orange-colored slices Chiles in the Cochinita Pibil. They are super hot. This is a super delicious place for food and pan Dulce. I bought a huge flaky sweet bread with ham and cheese baked in. It is a little strange to mix these flavors but I had to try it. I would recommend doing a little remodeling or touching up of the place but everything is getting so expensive-so I get it. I'm baffled that I haven't reviewed this place yet. My grandpa would come here frequently and bring me a pastry that had bits of cinnamon bark in it. It was good. I stop here on occasion to pick up Pan Dulce. This family-owned business places an emphasis on quality & tradition. Pan Dulce is made fresh daily and there are rows of mouthwatering options to choose from. On Saturday & Sunday they cook up fresh batches of Menudo. I recently came here to pick up some Cheese Tamales, which are also made fresh daily. The gentleman/owner who assisted me was so sweet. He wrapped up my tamales in tinfoil with care. When I realized they only take cash I told him I'd be back. He said, "You can pay me tomorrow." Thankfully, it's only a five-minute drive home, so I came back immediately with cash & a tip. The tamale was by far the best I ever had. Most tamales are dry but this was so moist. The masa had a nice taste. Found parking in front of the bakery. :) This place is pan dulce heaven! Everything fresh on my visit! Walk up to the front counter grab a tray and tongs then have at it: pick and choose your pastries/breads/cake slices. Tamales were delicious! They only had 3 options: green chicken, red pork, cheese n jalapeño. Family loved them. Masa was flavorful and moist; the filling inside was the right amount. Today was my first and last time @ La Perla. Ordered 2 tamales. 1 cheese jalapeño. One red chicken. I circled the picture to show how little cheese was added. When I bit in them, the masa was undercooked and mushy with minimal ingredients inside. Threw them both out bc didn't wanna catch food poisoning with undercooked masa. Got the menudo. Had no flavor. Very little hominy. I had to add salt and hominy to the menudo once I got home. Yes, I added the hominy at home bc I'm Hispanic and hominy is in the cupboards. They only accept cash and Zelle. Their website says they accept card and apple play but that's incorrect. Neither La Perla nor the market next door have an ATM. Paid $23 for disappointment. read more

Also, the masa is pretty tasty as well. Cheese tamale: had a good amount of cheese, jalapeno slice and a spicy yet not too hot red chili. A very well balanced tamale. Chicken tamale: tender juicy chicken with a spicy salsa verde. This one had a bit of heat but in a good way. Can definitely eat 3 in one sitting. Pork tamale: tender pork with flavorful red chili. This is a Mom and Pop shop. Been coming here for their chicken Tamales, they are very generous with their meat. I like the spicy ones. Their bolilos are good too, I use it for my sandwiches for lunch. Their pastries and champorado are delicious too. Their place smell of fresh bread and it is small inside. Grab a silver big plate dish and tong to pick up their pastries and pay to Go. Service is pretty much direct and self directed, but nice family owned businesses in the community. read more

I'm not a huge rosca fan, but this one was good! A little sticky, a lot sweet and very fresh. On the pricey side..the small one was $30; the large $60. The spot is teeny- they sell pan dulce and tamales in addition to what seems like other hot food dishes on the weekends. There are four flavors; chicken verde, pork, cheese, and a sweet one (filled with pineapple and something else I can't remember). We also got a few sweet breads and holiday cookies to try. They were good; a bit different from western (French) baked good as they're lighter and a bit dryer. This is the first time I've had pan dulce so I'm assuming it's the style of Mexican bread. This chicana's local treasure! I am of Mexican heritage and I grew up on sweet bread. This is by far one of the best spots I've had in my whole life. Mommy approved!!! (That's a big deal) In the mornings, I've had the "tamal verde" and I pair with their champurrado or Cafe de Olla (which is regular coffee, duh). It really hits the spot. Then, I take home a "concha de chocolate" and the Mexican croissants with yellow and gold sugar on top. They're fresh for a few days if kept in a bread box. I moved here 1 week after the pandemic. It was hard, not being from the area AND limited resources available (due to everything closing). This place was friendly and super cautious about customer well being and safety measures. I've seen the workers wash their hands constantly and sanitize trays and clasps used to pick up their bread. read more

Ok let me start by, I come to highland park every now and then for a doc appt. Every time I go to the doc around there I stop here for some pan dulce! By far the best pan dulce. Today, I grabbed a dozen to take to my parents house and I seemed to have forgotten my cash ( they only take cash btw) anyway, the owner there said "don't worry get me next time or tomorrow and he added a few more to the dozen for free. Mind you he doesn't know me nor does he know my next visit would be in two months. I went to the liquor store next store paid him cash and gave him a $10 tip for the next guy who really needs it. Their are 2 men I always see when I go, I guess one is the dad and the other is the son, they are very friendly and make you feel like you've been coming here for years. The sweet bread (pan dulce) is also very good. The treats are sooo soft and fluffy and don't get me stared on the cookies.. they just melt in your mouth. It's funny because I was born and raised in Highland Park and I remember this bakery here since the 80's and I never once went in till last year. I decided to try this place out because apparently our friend bought sweet bread from there and it was ao delicious. First time I went inside, there was a bunch of racks with bread and xmas cookies on them out in the open, I thought it was odd because they're going to get stale and hard being out like that and xmas was over but I got my bread and went home in anticipation that it was going to be the same bread I had tasted previously, it was not.... I decided to try them again yesterday and the same damn xmas cookies that I saw on one of those racks previously was still out there in the open! I spent $21.00 on bread and threw it all away and went to el super instead. Whatever is going on there should be fixed because it seems that they had a good thing going but it isn't worth it now. read more

Went here today for the first time to try the menudo and tamales, and since it's a bakery picked up a few conchas. I wish I could say at least 1 thing out if the 3 was good, but everything was below par. Menudo - Flavor was not there. My wife and I were trying to give it chance by adding all the fixin's, but it didn't help. There wasn't much hominy. The tripa/honeycomb had an odd texture. The pata... was this a ballerina cow?? Tamales - got 2 of each, the Chile verde chicken, pork, and the cheese. They tasted old and dry. Very disappointed in these. The Conchas - okay, you'd think being a bakery they'd have better conchas than say a Super A. But sadly these tasted at least a couple days old. Super dry and stale.
