I'm baffled that I haven't reviewed this place yet. My grandpa would come here frequently and bring me a pastry that had bits of cinnamon bark in it. It was good. I stop here on occasion to pick up Pan Dulce. This family-owned business places an emphasis on quality & tradition. Pan Dulce is made fresh daily and there are rows of mouthwatering options to choose from. On Saturday & Sunday they cook up fresh batches of Menudo. I recently came here to pick up some Cheese Tamales, which are also made fresh daily. The gentleman/owner who assisted me was so sweet. He wrapped up my tamales in tinfoil with care. When I realized they only take cash I told him I'd be back. He said, "You can pay me tomorrow." Thankfully, it's only a five-minute drive home, so I came back immediately with cash & a tip. The tamale was by far the best I ever had. Most tamales are dry but this was so moist. The masa had a nice taste. Inside was a generous amount of cheese, a slice of jalapeño, and a slightly spicy red chili sauce. It was big, flavorful, satisfying, and a great deal for $3.

Today 7/14 I purchased 2 doz tamales for $72 and went on vacation. The masa is not fully cooked the phone number is disconnected

On my way home, I saw a huge sign in front of La Perla Bakery that advertised: TAMALES! My reflexes stomped on the brakes and made a u-turn. Found parking in front of the bakery. :) This place is pan dulce heaven! Everything fresh on my visit! Walk up to the front counter grab a tray and tongs then have at it: pick and choose your pastries/breads/cake slices. Tamales were delicious! They only had 3 options: green chicken, red pork, cheese n jalapeño. Family loved them. Masa was flavorful and moist; the filling inside was the right amount. The tamales are on the spicy side except pork. Sat & Sun: Menudo available. Street parking only. Bring money: cash only!

    Cheese and jalapeño tamale

Today was my first and last time @ La Perla. Ordered 2 tamales. 1 cheese jalapeño. One red chicken. I circled the picture to show how little cheese was added. When I bit in them, the masa was undercooked and mushy with minimal ingredients inside. Threw them both out bc didn't wanna catch food poisoning with undercooked masa. Got the menudo. Had no flavor. Very little hominy. I had to add salt and hominy to the menudo once I got home. Yes, I added the hominy at home bc I'm Hispanic and hominy is in the cupboards. They only accept cash and Zelle. Their website says they accept card and apple play but that's incorrect. Neither La Perla nor the market next door have an ATM. Paid $23 for disappointment.

Best Rosca de Reyes north of the border.

For amazing pan dulce, champurrado, chicharrones and tamales... This is the place. Baked fresh throughout the day and into the evening, this bakery is a classic in Northeast LA. The best Rosca de Reyes outside of Mexico is made here. It is super moist, soft, sweet, and has a hint of rum. Yum yum yum. I've been coming here since the 90s, and it's been consistently good. The prices have risen, but what do you expect from any business doing business in the least business-friendly and most-taxed city? And yet, this small family run operation is holding fast and producing delicious mexican baked pastries. Conchas, cuernos, ojos de buey, empanadas, campechanas, donas, bollilos, teleras, galletas y mas! If you live around here, then you know. If you don't, now you know. And as far as those reviews showing moldy bread... ask yourself when have you ever known fresh bread to mold? If you take it home and forget about it for a week or longer, you will get mold. That is not any bakery's fault.. It's yours. Eat it while it's fresh or even better while it's still hot.

    Comfort food!!

Classic Mexican bakery with pan dulce, tamales and other savory items. Tamales were really fresh, nicely filled and not dry. Good balance of masa to filling ratio. Also, the masa is pretty tasty as well. Cheese tamale: had a good amount of cheese, jalapeno slice and a spicy yet not too hot red chili. A very well balanced tamale. Chicken tamale: tender juicy chicken with a spicy salsa verde. This one had a bit of heat but in a good way. Can definitely eat 3 in one sitting. Pork tamale: tender pork with flavorful red chili. You won't be disappointed. Pan dulce was fresh and soft no issues at all. This was my second time patronizing this business will definitely be back!

Staff us so friendly , came herenfor pan dulce and some tamales. Parking was a little tricky but you can get by. There isn't may people eating inside. Most people take it to go. It's cash only or zelle , so bring that cashhhh! Totally worth it

We kicked things off with the queso fundido, and wow, it was absolutely delicious! Rich, melty, and packed with flavor, it was the perfect way to start the evening. For my entrée, I ordered the cochinita pibil, which was incredibly tender and saucy in the best way. My husband ordered the short rib, and it was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. On the side, we shared the papas bravas and esquite, both of which complemented our dishes perfectly. The drinks truly elevated the night. My husband and I both love mezcal, and Kateen delivered. I ordered the Valentine's Day "Zona Romántica," which featured mezcal and wine almost like a sangria, but completely unique and beautifully balanced. My husband had the "Gypsy Fever," also mezcal-based, and it was smoky, smooth, and refreshing. Between the food, cocktails, and ambiance, it made for such a romantic and memorable evening. We'll absolutely be back!!

However, the reason I'm giving 2 stars is because of the valet parking experience. First, I was charged $25 even though the sign clearly stated that valet parking is $17 for the first 3 hours, and $25 after 3 hours. Our reservation was at 6:30 PM, we arrived on time, and we left before 9 PM, so the charge did not make sense. When I asked the valet attendant, he kept saying, "because you dined there," without giving any clear explanation. If it is actually a flat rate for restaurant guests, then that should be clearly stated upfront to customers. Second, when I got into my car, I noticed that someone had touched the navigation settings because the compass direction and display were different from what I normally use. I do not understand why there was any need to adjust or touch my navigation system at all. I really think the restaurant needs to improve and better manage its valet parking system. Honestly, it felt like I was being charged a random price just because I was told, "you dined there." If there is a flat valet rate for restaurant guests, that information should be clearly communicated upfront instead of leaving customers confused at the end.

The whipped beans are the star! We had the guacamole which was tasty, great tostadas with it. The arepas were good but the pork belly was a little too fatty (I know pork belly is always fatty) to the point the fat muted the flavored for the arepa a bit, but still delicious. The empanadas were great and as someone who lived in South America and ate empanadas every day, these really took me back to my Paraguay days. The squash blossoms were light and perfectly fried.
