First off. I've done M*** before. This one was really good. We did the 7 course tasting. They do a 5 course appetizer even before they start the meal. My wife has celiac and then made all the changes necessary to her menu and everything she eat was as good as mine. The chef came out to wish a happy anniversary. We went to Rome in November and ended our trip with a fancy, extravagant dinner at La Pergola, the only restaurant in the city with three Michelin stars. It wasn't an essential part of our trip and felt kind of removed from the rest of our experience of Rome. That said, the restaurant was beautiful, and we enjoyed a lavish, delicious dinner. La Pergola is on the top floor of the Waldorf Astoria, a kind of weird hotel in the suburbs, a long cab ride away from the city center, where we spent the majority of our trip. On the plus side, the view was spectacular. Our table faced a giant window overlooking the city, and it was worth the cold to go outside for a quick rooftop walk. We had a 7:00 reservation on a Saturday night, and it was easy to make online, four months in advance. We arrived a few minutes early, only to learn that the restaurant opened at 7:00 and only offered one seating. We hung out in the Waldorf Astoria lobby with a crowd of people obviously there for a conference, then took the elevator up to La Pergola as soon as it opened. The space was lovely, attractively modern and very formal. We dressed up, which was fun and also required. Service was excellent. We got the full fine dining experience, with a dozen courses and wine pairings and a whole team attending to our every need. We declined to review the ridiculous water menu, asking for the most normal house water, but did start with a round of cocktails. The Islay (Ky) was a nice, savory whiskey drink with Micther's bourbon, Laphroaig 10, dill, and acid solution. The Negroni Lavender was a smooth mix of red vermouth, Tanqueray 10, Campari, and lavender infusion. The wine pairing was worthwhile, thoughtfully constructed, with solid pours of several great wines. La Pergola offers a nightly gourmet menu, and you can order the full ten courses or a slightly abbreviated seven courses. We opted for the shorter menu but were able to add in the pre-dessert for an eight-course dinner, not counting the many little extras. Dinner kicked off with a couple of small bites: a celeriac chip with flower gel and a shot of oxidated apple infusion with chocolate and coconut. Then we got an initial bread service of paper-thin crackers and breadsticks with fennel seed. Next, a colorful array of five canapes: marinated baby squid with chicory oil, dried potato, olive, and raisin; pepper-marinated chard with potato chip and parsley sponge powder; pumpkin and pumpkin seeds with oil and parmesan water infused with herbs; grilled cardoncelli mushroom on bread with burnt flower mayo and puffed lentil; and beef diaphragm with black truffle and potato. This was followed by more bread, a tomato oil focaccia with homemade butter and olive oil. Then our first enumerated course: marinated amberjack tartare with almonds and chufa. More bread, a semolina ciabatta, then succulent red shrimp with pomegranate molasses, beetroot, and red rice sauce. The third course was the house pasta, fagottelli "La Pergola." Rich, velvety filled pasta with pecorino and veal stock, the chef's take on a carbonara. Then even more bread, a slice of white bread, maybe sourdough, and whole wheat with pumpkin seed. The fish course was fantastic, a perfectly cooked piece of red mullet with permaculture carrots and galangal sauce. Then there was a gorgeous scallop with geranium aroma, celeriac, and black cabbage. One more bread, seeded and brown, then the last savory course: venison with persimmon, chestnuts, and carob. Dessert was its own show, beginning with tarragon yogurt foam with sorbet and wild strawberry slush. Tart and fresh, my favorite kind of dessert. Then we were brought a complicated metal container with multiple drawers, like a tiny dresser, full of petit fours. Cookies and bon bons and nougat, a dozen different bite-sized treats. Finally, a satisfying dessert of milk, biscuits, and coffee in various forms. La Pergola was by far the most expensive restaurant we went to in Rome, and given this, I will note that it wasn't the most memorable. I'm glad we went, though, and very much enjoyed the luxurious dinner and panoramic city view. read more

Located inside the Waldorf Astoria Rome Cavalieri, La Pergola is famous for its three Michelin stars and its reputation as one of the most exclusive dining destinations in the city. While the evening began with high hopes, the experience unfortunately did not live up to the expectations that come with such a prestigious rating and price point. The evening starts on a high note. The restaurant offers a stunning 270-degree panoramic view of Rome from its hilltop location. Before seating you, the staff invites you onto the balcony to soak in the incredible cityscape while they prepare your table. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful dining settings in the world. We opted for the 10-course tasting menu without the wine pairing. While the presentation of every dish was top-notch--truly extravagant and "pretty"--the actual flavors were a significant disappointment. Despite the fancy appearance, the taste was average at best, and in some cases, below average. It certainly did not feel like Michelin-level cooking. A major issue was the saltiness. Nearly every dish was over-salted, leaving our entire group of six incredibly thirsty throughout the night. The "thirst" resulted in an unexpected addition to our bill. The staff was very attentive in refilling our glasses, but we later discovered we had gone through eight bottles of water at €9 each. The most shocking part, however, came at the end of the meal. We assumed that after a 10-course marathon, a simple tea or coffee would be included. Instead, we were charged €12 for a single cup of tea. While it was served in a pot, we were far too full from the meal to even finish it. For the price of a three-star Michelin meal, one expects a balance of beauty and flavor, but La Pergola felt like a case of style over substance. read more

This was our 4th visit to La Pergola over about 30 years, and it's only getting better. The food is now, and always has been, totally innovative, beautifully served, and delicious. Even when the ingredients aren't my favorite, they manage to make me love it! Food is why we're there, and they focus on that perfectly. But service there is also impeccable. Everyone works so hard to make sure you're comfortable and satisfied with every dish. Our first 3 visits were served outside on a beautiful patio with a panoramic view of Rome, including the Vatican. Eating such great food and watching the sun set on this beautiful city is so amazing. Yesterday's visit was different because we ate inside the dining room. It's May and too windy and cool to eat outside. Since our last visit, however, La Pergola has totally renovated the indoor dining room, and it's spectacular - comfortable and gorgeous. They've also added a chef at your table feature that adds another dimension to the dinner. I think that about covers it. The only downside I can think of is - Yes, it's very expensive, but it really is worth it. My whole family went there with me for my 70th birthday a few years ago, and it gave me another reason to love this place. They know how to treat everyone so well and gave all of us a reason to remember a great meal in a beautiful setting. read more

A beautiful stunning panoramic view of the city clashing with a hotel wedding. The kitchen staff performs pure magic, transforming ingredients and generating courses that are meticulously prepared and worthy of the highest praise (4.5/5 for food). The service although professional and knowledgeable about the menu, seemed lacking for having attained 3* . If I had to pick another aspect that failed to meet the high standards expected, it would be the ambiance (3/5). Our elegant evening was dramatically marred by an unexpected and deeply inappropriate distraction: the restaurant is positioned directly next to a wedding venue on the same rooftop, from which pounding EDM music blasted throughout our entire dinner. Trying to savor delicate, expensive dishes while the bass lines shook the windows was an absurd and deeply disappointing contradiction. For a restaurant of this prestige, having a fine dining room situated right next to a full-volume wedding party is a terrible choice that completely destroys the intended atmosphere. This lack of separation extended to the restrooms, which were shared with the wedding guests and had, unfortunately, been left trashed. A special mention must go to the brilliant dishes we enjoyed. The "Lamb on The Via Appia Antica" was the absolute standout. I'm typically not a big fan of lamb due to its gaminess, but the chef somehow managed to remove almost all of it, resulting in the most tender, mild, and delicate bite I've ever had. We also loved the playful 0.01% (Tomato Carpaccio), which was a clever and cute nod to the cobblestones of Rome. Finally, the Sweet Shrimp lived up to its name, proving to be exceptionally fresh, mild, and delicate. Overall, La Pergola serves truly brilliant, unforgettable food and deserves its stars for the cuisine. However, be warned that the spectacular views and outstanding dining may be completely overshadowed if you happen to be seated during a major rooftop event. It's a shame that the ambiance is so poorly managed in conjunction with the surrounding venue noise and guests. read more

Even more magnificent after almost ten months of renovations. The space is more open, modern, spectacular. Of course, the incredible view of Rome from Monti Mario is the same, incredible experience. But the star of the restaurant remains the menu by Heinz Beck. It's incredibly expensive but worth every euro. The service is impeccable. La Pergola is above and beyond even many other Michelin 3-Star restaurants I have visited. If you can afford it, the excellent is well worth the splurge. read more

My wife and I had dinner here last night to wrap up our Rome trip. We came in with high expectations given this was our first 3-star Michelin experience. We were sorely disappointed. First the positive. Given its location outside the City Center, perched atop a hill, and on the 9th floor of the Waldorf Astoria, the views are spectacular. The restaurant overlooks all of Rome and beyond. There is a deck outside the restaurant where you literally have 270 degree views of the entire Roman metropolis. However, once seated, the top bar of the safety railing is exactly in one's line of sight, detracting from the view. Would have thought someone would have noticed this and come up with a fix. The setting is a bit stuffy for me. The service was very robotic, none of the servers would really engage with you other than just reciting the descriptions of the various dishes served. Now the real negatives. For me, this experience was analogous to the "Emperor Has No Clothes" story. It's a restaurant that seems very hard in trying to be the fanciest. The meal starts off with the server presenting you with a 10+ page water menu! I kid you you not! This set off my spidey-sense. Any restaurant can offer that many different types of water, they just choose not to. The menu describes the minerality per volume of the various bottled waters (both still and gas). Totally unnecessary IMO. The chef knows his cuisine. If he thinks the type of water is that important, just pick a few he thinks will pair the best! This is followed by the presentation of the wine lists. A 50-page list for the Italian wines and another equally voluminous book for the non-Italian wines. Keep in mind that you are supposed to pick a wine in 5-10 minutes. Again, more for show IMO. After this, you are offered the menu to select a tasting option (7 or 10 courses) or a la carte. One thing that's funny and maybe a bit of insight into the mindset of the restaurant... The menu offered to the gentlemen has the prices. The one offered to the ladies does not. I thought maybe this was just in error for our table but the table next to us noticed the same thing! Really??? We chose the 10-course tasting menu (priced at 310 euros per person). The food was wildly disappointing. My wife and I kept comparing the food/experience to the other two Michelin experiences we've had on this trip (Sur Mesure in Paris and La Terrazza in Rome) and this restaurant did not measure in both in terms of presentation nor taste. After the meal, if you ask for coffee, guess what, another 10+ page coffee menu. By now, you can guess how I feel about things like this. Two glasses of champagne, a bottle of wine (on the lower end of their offerings), two glasses of port, a 10% tip, and the meal for two was ~1,100 euros. Truly the best meal I've had in my entire life. We did the ten course tasting menu, and after every dish we literally said WOW. Usually on a tasting menu I feel like there are one or two standout dishes, but on this menu, every single dish was a standout. The biggest difference to me between the 7 and 10 course was the lobster - but oh man was the lobster worth it The ravioli (their signature) was crazy - every single one just burst in my mouth like the most delicious pocket of cream. This was the highlight of our 2 week Europe trip, hands down! Everything from the phone call we made to push our reservation time to the ending of our meal was excellent. We weren't sure if we would make our reservation time so I decided to call the restaurant even though they weren't open yet. Much to my surprise, the phone only rang once and someone answered immediately and was able to accommodate a later reservation time! The entire staff was professional, courteous and efficient. We've been to a few Michelin star restaurants including a couple of 3 star restaurants in Paris and I can say with a straight face this is the best among them all. This place gets a perfect score in my books in all 3 categories I care about, ambiance, food and services. The view this restaurant offers is incredible. Where can you find a place that allows you to see the night skyline of Roma with St. Peter's Basilica in the background while you enjoy top quality food with great presentation and incredible service? The answer is this restaurant. The food was fantastic. We had the gourmet chefs menu and those dishes did not disappoint. Every dish was perfect from presentation to the taste. The view is very pretty that shows the city of Rome. I was so excited to come here as it was my husband's birthday and we were on an our honeymoon. I find when it comes to amazing service it is not that they just fold your napkin when you get up to go to the bathroom. It's the little things. For example, like acknowledging that this is a special day for you coming into your restaurant. Or engaging about the meal more than just explaining what you got. There was not one comment from about our honeymoon or birthday. Now onto the food, the reason you are there. If it was spectacular, you could forgive the service. Unfortunately, the food was good but that's it. It did not blow me away and it should have. I have been to many Michelin stars where the food blows you away. The only 3 star Michelin in Rome, so I tried last minute to get a reservation that same week and got an email that confirmed my reservation. I read mixed reviews but ultimately I'm we went. Located at one of the higher points in Rome with a 270 degree view overlooking the city was one of the highlights of the trip. The food itself was good, but I've had better at 3 Michelin stars, this was more affordable €310 for the 10 course compared to Single Thread but I think food wise, it's also a different style of food, perhaps it's preference but overall I think this location is dated compared to other restaurants of similar ratings. The dishes are more traditional. If you can get a seat outside, I'd recommend it in the summer. The decor takes you back into the 70's-80's and that's the theme at the Waldorf Astoria. Given the ambiance the service and the food, it was a nice experience for those looking for a romantic and/or memorable dining experience. The staff was amazing and accommodated my request for a table outside to watch the sunset. Dinner lasted 4 1/2 hours and was amazing and draining at the same time. The courses evolved as each course came out starting out light and then getting progressively heavier. Overall, it's an experience to go there and dine. There are probably places with better food for the € but the combination of view, service, and number of courses makes it what it is. The food quality is high. A restaurant that is more formal than actual and feels a little behind the current trends. On the top floor of the Waldolf Astoria in Rome, it is very formal and you must wear a suit jacket to enter. The chef is German. When I first arrived, I was given a mineral water menu of more than 10 pages. The wine list was also two thick volumes, but unfortunately the price was not friendly. The dishes are very baroque, I don't even think it can really be called Italian food. Most of the sauces are too strong, covering up the flavor of the ingredients themselves. After eating for more than three hours, I was really bored by the end. I booked 4 nights at the Cavalieri using Hilton free night certs, and as this is a "resort" for Hilton, I had a $250 resort credit from my Aspire card to spend. What better than at this restaurant. I reserved a month in advance and got a solo table for the 3rd night of my stay. As I was traveling light, I inquired about getting a loaner jacket to meet the dress code and was assured they'd provide one. Went with the tasting menu, which I enjoyed. This was my first 3* restaurant, although I've been to a number of 2*s in the past. First time being presented with a "water menu"; they do have my favorite, Badoit. Another spectacular dining experience truly deserving of its 3 Michelin stars! Of course, every interaction, from the moment we stepped out of our vehicle, was gracious and welcoming. The service was spot on elegant and attentive, truly anticipating our needs throughout the magnificent dining event, which was just that: an event. We started with champagne, which paired beautifully with the amuse bouche then opted for a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape to go alongside the 7-course tasting menu. Omg this was just a magical dinner. My fiancé and I loved every minute of it. The food was incredible. We got the 10 course because we have a bit of a fomo aspect. I have an almond allergy and normally the substitutes are alright but La Pergola really just impressed me with the dishes they made for me given my allergy (one is the picture attached). The wine pairing was very generous and the sommelier was extremely informative and kind. And now the view - THE VIEW. The photos don't do it justice. It's absolutely breathtaking. In regards to the "mens jackets dress code" we sat outside with a 7:30pm time in august and my fiancé had forgotten to pack a jacket. We weren't met with any hardship from the restaurant and it wasn't even brought up. A truly amazing restaurant that served up potentially one of the best meals I've ever had in a setting which is spectacular. As we were staying at the Cavalieri we decided to treat ourselves to a little fine dining pleasure. We made reservations several months prior to arriving and ensured ourselves a terrace table with a great view of the Vatican and the rest of Rome. The hostess graciously encouraged us to take a few pictures prior to seating us and then the table captain presented us with the menus. We were then asked if we wanted an apperitivo and we all decided on some Prosecco. We next selected an nice Campanian sparkling mineral water for the table and shortly after the amazing bread cart arrived. We sampled everything they offered with my personal favorites being the house made grissini which had a hint of rosemary and the crusty Tuscan bread. They were all served with some amazing olive oil and multiple types of sea salt. Once we enjoyed the bread a trio of amuse bouches arrived with all of us agreeing the 'bruschetta', which was a creative inversion of the dish, where the 'bread' was a firm tomato flavored puree that you could hold like the traditional offering. For my primi I opted for the foie gras which was served in an amalgam of ways, partly frozen and almost like a custard while the middle was liquefied and decadent. Our new friend operating the bread cart offered some tender brioche for my dish was I enthusiastically accepted. My secondi was the fried zucchini blossom with caviar. If it sounds rich and indulgent, it was. The blossom was artfully presented with a creamy filling of saffron consume and topped with a heaping serving of caviar. The contrast between the fried blossom and the creamy caviar and consume was perfect. I paired this was an excellent white wine from Trentino who's minerality and acidity worked well with the dish. My entrée was the perfectly prepared sous vide lamb which came with a rich reduction, goat cheese and broccoli. The lamb was melt in your mouth tender and cooked to a perfect medium rare plus. The depth of the reduction only added to the dishes flavor and complexity. This was paired with a wonderful Tuscan red recommended by our waiter. For my dessert I chose the cheese tasting which was six amazing cheeses that were nearly impossible to select from the dozens offered so I described the flavor profiles I enjoyed to our waiter and he did not disappoint in his selections. I asked for a vin santo to accompany this and the sommelier provided one that matched the cheese perfectly. We then had a series of dessert amuse bouches come out including the amazing 'tower' of jellies and candies which seemed to never end. The final treat was a miniature chocolate ice cream bar on a stick with an exquisite berry compote filling. We were all stuffed by this point but not one remained regardless of our condition. Our waitstaff were all very friendly and engaging and we shared some mutual stories about both Rome and New York City and the food we liked in both. La Pergola did not disappoint at all and all three Michelin Stars were on full display throughout our memorable meal. A culinary experience I will fondly remember. read more

Having been to many Michelin restaurants, including several 3 Michelin stars, we were very excited to try La Pergola while we were in Rome. When we were there in September the weather was a bit too windy to sit outside, but we had a nice table by the window overlooking Rome. The views were still quite beautiful even from inside. We had a reservation at 8pm and the restaurant only had a couple tables occupied at that time, but my 9 pm it was completely full - I guess people eat late in Italy. The service here was spectacular. The second you get up, they come by and take away your napkin and bring a fresh one for you. Then as you're coming back, they are waiting at the table to help you into your chair. It's the little things like this that really make a place stand out. For an appertiv, they come around with a champagne cart asking if you would like to start the meal with a glass of champagne, the options were Dom, a rose champagne, and another regular champagne I don't now remember. I chose the Rose champagne, which I believe was about 30 euros, probably less than a glass of Dom, which I assume would be around 50 Euro. I suggest that when you're here, you just don't consider prices too much and go with the flow. We opted for the longer tasting menu and asked the sommelier if he could give us 3 glasses of wine and 1 dessert wine to match what we ordered. We can't drink enough to usually do the entire pairing option, and every restaurant, including this one, is always accommodating to our request. I also had a slightly annoying request because I really don't like the taste of licorice and the main course on the tasting menu was lamb with fennel - I also don't really like lamb either. If I'm spending 300 euros on a meal, I want to really like everything I eat. I mentioned this to the server and he happily substituted the lamb for the beef option, which was exactly what I had wanted. I don't remember everything we ordered, but I don't think there was a dish that I did not enjoy. I've included some pictures here as well. My fiancé and I visited La Pergola during our trip to Rome in early October 2019. This visit turned out to be probably my best fine dining experience so far. The only 3-star restaurant in Rome didn't disappoint. Our dinner reservation was at 7:30 as that was the time when the restaurant officially opens. However, we arrived about an hour earlier hoping that we could catch a sight of sunset at the restaurant's terrace. Not only were we let in before the opening time, but the restaurant also offered macadamia nuts, biscuits and several one bite finger food as pre-dinner snacks. We took a few pictures of the city view while enjoying the snack and the comfortable breeze. At 7:30 we were welcomed to the dining hall. The restaurant offered two tasting menu experience - one was the full 10 course menu and the other was a smaller menu with lower prices. However, we wanted the 10 course menu but with dessert course removed as we were on a diet...and we got that with a price equal to the smaller tasting menu. Overall the menu was heavy on vegetable and seafood as opposed to red meat courses. All the dishes were very skillfully made - tastes were well balanced, texture was perfect. Delicious flavor surprises exist here and there. The creativity of modern day chef mixed with traditional ingredients in a pleasant way. It just feels like a solid 3 star restaurant. My favorite dish that night, to my surprise...was a vegetable dish. It was the stewed lettuce heart with chicken broth reduction. The leaves were warm but still amazingly crispy and juicy inside, and also at the same time infused with the delicious scent of chicken broth...very interesting. At the end even though we opted out for dessert courses, we were still offered petit fours and the famous chocolate box. Service was prompt and friendly. I been to a lot of Michelin star restaurants because honestly I love food over everything so take all my money. First off the views are incredible no one can deny that. When do you ever get a chance to see all of Rome the way this place has. That is the only thing Michelin about this place. Something super random is this has a water menu I've never experienced that before they have water all over the world that you could order, another unique thing about this place. the food was subpar and unimpressive. There are far better mom and pop places you can spend 360 euros on in Italy and can be full, happy and WOW for a month. Dessert was finally the wow factor you expect at a Michelin star. There are surprise goodies everywhere in the dessert. Overall, save your money for anywhere else, unless you wanna see that view for 360 euros. read more

Ist, this place has excellent potential and the view is nice. We were hear weeks ago. Unfortunately, the customer service wasn't that great. Our waitress acted like she didn't want to work and gave us bad attitudes. We were afraid to ask her for anything. So I decided to ask for a different waiter but the place was booked. The food was good and the place was nice, I just wish we had a different server then her. Ruined our mood. read more

Food is second to none. View of the Vatican is sublime. So what's not to love? I don't know? The whole night felt uninspired. Food came out with robotic consistency as if to keep us 'on track' and every dish just felt like matter of fact inevitability. Also for a *** star, kind of surprised we didn't get a little parting gift or copy or the menu, which has been customary for so many upscale experiences that we have been lucky to go to. I'd give it a better review but considering the fact that it's out of the way from all the good stuff in Rome and there are tons of other culinary delights, this one seems like a hard sell unless you are staying at the hotel, which we did. FYI - hotel is not within walking distance of anything interesting or worth checking out. Also, the hotel is cool but from a different time. Part old-school riches mixed with stark fascist architecture. I am happy/lucky that I did get a reservation and was able to have this once in a lifetime experience though, so for all those who have the means, please enjoy. read more

Review #500 I've always liked to save a special review for a milestone review number. La Pergola is definitely a very special restaurant worthy of such a milestone. Normally for fine dining, I would just write about the food in each course, the ingredients, the technique involved (if I understand it), the balance of flavors, etc.... but I'm not going to. Or not much anyway. La Pergola is the complete fine dining restaurant experience. Starting with a movie set like aerial view of Rome from the balcony. If you time your dinner right, you can enjoy sunset on Rome from here. The impeccable service of fine dining that is a lost art form is celebrated here. Dropped from restaurants all over to make the casual fine dining dress code of just don't wear shorts and flip flops customers feel hip and trendy, it's good to know there is still a special place for refinement while dining. That how your meal is served, which utensil is correct, the measured placement of each item, is as crucial to the dining experience as the food itself. Somehow La Pergola accomplished this without feeling stuffy. There was a genuine gratitude coming from each employee that you have decided to share in this experience with them. Because at the end of the day, we are all going to sit back with a slice of pizza and a beer way more often than partaking in this dining ritual. But for one day and one meal.....it's fun, and made the idea of packing a suit jacket in my case just for this experience so worth it. I can say each course was outstanding. We did the 10 course tasting menu, which must have gone on for 2.5 to 3 hours maybe? Some of the ingredients were lost in translation as was their preparation, although we did attempt to ask. We reached a point, where it didn't matter anymore, and we were dining on the experience. Several amuse bouche appeared in beautiful presentations before our first course of foie gras with apple and chestnuts. Each plate was unique in size and design to enhance the appearance of the dish, like choosing a frame around a great work of art. I've been so lucky to experience many amazing chefs in my life. I felt that every dish was in line with the highest of craft that I have experienced, however there was still one dish that completely stood out as unique. A lettuce leaf done in a pressure cooker enhanced with chicken flavor. It was stunningly beautiful, with a perfect texture like an al dente pasta, and rich in flavor. The main courses kept coming out, 8 of them in total before the cheese cart appeared and we trusted our server to give us a nice selection from mild to strongest. Then a couple of desert courses. At this point we were completely stuffed and out came a multi tiered treasure chest of fine chocolates, macaroons, and other goodies. I've had this presentation at a few restaurants before, but never where every sweet snack was so excellent that it was a sin to waste any of them. Ok now...we're beyond full. Thinking the bill was coming next.....a thick frozen gelato bar covered in chocolate appears on a popsicle stick. Are they taking bets in the back if we will keep eating, if they keep feeding us? I looked back at the kitchen door to expect to see the chefs peering out.....saying, I can't believe the fat Americans ate another course!!!! At this point there was a pause and I was praying the bill would arrive, because one more wafer thin mint and I'm seriously concerned a Monty Python sketch is about to happen in real life. Thanks to La Pergola for giving us such a memorable evening. You are truly worthy of your 3 Michelin star reputation. Note: This is of course a think very far ahead restaurant. I made reservations 5 months in advance. Not sure you need to be that far ahead, but I'd say as soon as you know you are going to Rome...book it if expensive Michelin Star Restaurants are your thing. read more

You don't have to order the 10 course, but don't think by not ordering you'll be able to spend less then 200 euros a person, you won't cause you'll want to try things like I did. read more

Wow... La Pergola was a memorable experience - an amazing experience from start to finish. While expected from a 3-star Michelin it was lovely to see the hype match the experience! The food on the 10 course tasting menu was unique, well thought out, and most importantly, extremely tasty. Some of the highlights included the tortellini, the best venison dish I've ever had, one of the most unique salad course I've had (heart of lettuce stewed with the aroma of chicken), and the absolute best foie gras on the planet. Each course as well thought out and each worked really well within the whole of the meal. I don't think I can say enough regarding the service - attentive, courteous, happy, formal and and eager to make sure your night is special. Can't say enough...truly amazing. The sommelier that helped us interpret their very large wine list was great - talked with us to figure out what we liked, and then recommended a wonderful white that didn't break the bank. La Pergola is a special place in all aspects - amazing food and service define this must go to restaurant. read more

I had the opportunity to dine at this restaurant when I was in Rome. The atmosphere was fantastic, and I really enjoyed meeting the chef and exploring the great food they had to offer. Ironically enough this restaurant was located in my hotel at the Waldorf Astoria which was beautiful with a stunning view. The restaurant ambience was beautiful, and of course that view !! read more

Love love love! They had a chocolate soufflé to die for, it was so good, I nearly went to heaven. The first time I had turbot here and it was also amazing. We did one starter, one entree and one dessert each as we learned our lesson from Enoteca that there are always extras at these 3 Michelin Star restaurants. The staff service was impeccable and the view was even better, you can see all of Rome from up top as it is inside the Waldorf, best pics ever. The moscato was amazing as was the food and the atmosphere, we didn't feel stuffy and had to be quiet in this restaurant as you normally feel as obligated in comparable Michelin Star places in the states. I wish I can go back and eat again, it was gluttony but well worth it read more

Wow... biggest restaurant disappointment of the year. This shouldn't be near a 3-star restaurant. Let's start with the positives... the service was amazing. The employees were warm and incredible. The views were wonderful, though he didn't get a great seat for the view. The wine list (and the water list) were great. Large and reasonable. Now the bad... the food! Did the full 10-course tasting menu and NONE of the courses were up to any other 3-star restaurant I've ever been to (hell throw out the stars, the food just wasn't good!) The free bread, salt, and oil was probably the best food in the meal. The food was one miss after another - ranging from meh to just ok. We were in Rome for 5 days and this was the worst dinner we had -- regardless of the price! Save yourself the time and money - pass! read more

I've eaten in Rome many times, but this was the first time I visited a three Michelin star restaurant in the Eternal City, and I was a little nervous about it. It turned out that there was nothing to worry about - from the minute we entered the venue to the time we entered our taxi after dinner, we were treated like royalty! The entire staff was amazingly friendly and nice, and they happily answered numerous questions about the wine and the food. Speaking of the food, I can't even begin to describe just how wonderful that meal was. We wentg with the ten-course meal with the wine package, and loved every single morsel of food that was served. Even though the portions were small, and spread out over a period of several hours, I felt like I needed to let my belt out a notch by the time we hade finished. Every dish was a symphony of flavours, and they unquestionably earned their three Michelin stars! read more

My husband and I have been touring Italy and Croatia for the last two weeks, essentially eating our way through both countries. We've been to some of the best restaurants, and enjoyed getting to know the Michelin scene throughout. We had hopes that La Pergola was going to be the best and last of our trip, and while the food was incredible--expected for a 3-star restaurant--the service was extremely disappointing, and honestly, a little sexist. To cut to the chase, at the end of the night, after the last dessert course and before they dropped the check, we were on cloud nine. The 10 courses had been creative and delicious, and we were enjoying the classic Italian ambience and nighttime view. I was getting cold in my evening dress, and my husband, dressed in a jacket and tie, offered me his jacket to tide me over until we paid the check and left before the last of the clients departed. It wasn't 30 seconds that I had settled into his jacket's warmth before an employee we hadn't encountered yet hustled up to us to remind us that removal of jackets weren't allowed on the dining room floor. I said surely an exception could be made that we were nearly done (after an €850 meal), and that I was cold. He insisted that no, wool shawls (itchy, to my skin) would be provided for women, men must keep their jackets. We've dined in fine restaurants across the world, including the best in Italy, and never have we been treated so pejoratively. We communicated our frustration to our waiter, who handled it with aplomb. Yet, after communicating it to our hostess, she said something to the effect of 'yes jackets on the floor is our policy,' and stood by said talking point in a rude posture literally as the elevator doors closed in front of us. We've never been treated as if our presence wasn't welcomed in any Michelin-started restaurant, but after a lack-luster service experience here, followed by this extremely disrespectful showing, we left feeling a lot worse than we went in. read more
