A really delicious vegetarian restaurant with a lot of options. They put a bouquet of ornamental peppers on every table which really bothered me because I could smell it while I was eating so I just asked the waiter to remove it. It is located in the midst of a busy shopping street, so it was really convenient and we tried the appetizer sampler which was SO much food. The broccoli flan was delicious! Best meal we've had thus far in Roma. The risotto with asparagus cream (who even knew you could make cream of asparagus) was delicious and we ate every last morsel. The red hot pomodoro pasta was also pretty good. The coffee cremolata though, that was worth dying for! It's quite annoying to pay 2.50 per refill of water though, and we were charged for bread per person which we didn't ask for and it was too hard and served without oil/butter. I suppose it's like otoshi in Japan. Either way it was a good experience, and our server was sweet. read more

Trying to find truly vegan options in Rome during peak season was painful, so when we saw this place we had to try it. A little surprised by the rave reviews - it was...okay but frankly a bit underwhelming. Ambience: Romantic, intimate - nice vibes for a date night Service: Fantastic. All the waiters were really nice - sometimes a little scattered but overall had a pleasant experience, and they were able to detail out each menu item Food/drinks: We started with the vegan cheese plate - pretty good! Easily our favorite item on the menu...but went downhill from there Cavatelli with Pesto: Fresh ingredients, but extremely bland. Almost completely unsalted. The gondini cheese was there for the bulk of the flavor, but maybe because it was vegan it just couldn't carry the full dish. Fregola with saffron: Again, pretty flavorless. Presentation was great and definitely fresh ingredients, but just too bland Eggplant Meatballs: Really savory/flavorful, another good dish. Overall - 3.5/5. This is a beautiful restaurant in Rome, that just happens to be vegetarian with lots of vegan options. They couldn't find our reservation, which I made online, but they were happy to seat us anyway. The drink I ordered, the Hugo, was pretty forgettable, which is a shame because they're known for their cocktails! It tasted like a weak mojito. Sam ordered a glass of wine, which the waiter completely forgot about until we reminded him halfway through our appetizer. So that wasn't a great start, but I'm happy to say, it got much better from there. We shared a strawberry salad, which was smaller than we had expected considering the price, but it was wonderful. Full of flavor, only the freshest ingredients, truly delicious. Don't share this because you're going to want it all to yourself. I ordered the tonnarelli pasta with datterini tomatoes and vegan mozzarella. It was was basically spaghetti marinara, except the best spaghetti marinara I have ever had, in my entire life. I moaned after each bite, it was so perfect. Tonnarelli has a bit more "bite" than spaghetti, and it gave the dish a lot more texture. I ended up eating a lot of pasta over the course of the trip, and upon reflection, this was one of my most favorite. We skipped dessert because nothing jumped out. I rarely eat typical breakfast foods, whether "typical" for you is sweets and/or carbs or savory American grossness like bacon and eggs. But when I skip dinner, I tend to wake up as hungry as a mofo, so I checked Yelp for vegan options on a recent Saturday morning (11:30 am) and up popped this delightful place. It seems Il Margutta has two alluring personalities and I love both of them! There's the first room which lends itself to breakfast brunch, with its casual cafe atmosphere. Venture back a little bit to the sultry dining room if you'd like (I'd favor this after dark). The menu is a joy to behold, friends! I didn't check out the brunch buffet because I was too early (imagine that. Me... "too early" for something) but I don't really care because buffets are not my style and there was a "vegan breakfast" calling my name. So every once in a while, I ignore my better judgement and indulge in a sweet thing first thing. Picture this: a parfait of fruits & berries. A glass of freshly squeezed citrus (I opted for a perfect pink grapefruit). Strong bitter coffee. And... wait for it.. a fucking fruit TART that you'd swear contained butter in the crust. Jesus wept. As a vegetarian, I was excited to try Il Margutta, reportedly one of the older vegetarian restaurants in Rome. I arrived on a Monday night around 9 pm to see that it wasn't too busy and got a table on my own. Ambiance was very good and the restaurant has good artwork and a nice classy vibe. After looking over the fairly extensive menu I settled on the Il Margutta tasting menu and a cocktail... And then waited. It took almost 15 minutes for the wait staff to come by and take my order. It seemed that none of the regular wait staff were allowed to take orders and I had to wait for 1 of 2 more senior waiters to notice me. Before they even took my order, the waiters almost poured me wine meant for the table next to me! At first, I thought it was being offered to me as an apology for having me wait so long. After that the food came at regular enough intervals. Unfortunately none of it impressed. The presentation was always great, but each dish was lacking in taste and creativity. After a series of bland and overly oily courses I was waiting for the dessert promised on the tasting menu only to see it offered to the table next to me! They explained to the waiter that they already had their dessert and 5 minutes later he brought it to me along with one compliments of the chef. There are not a lot of vegetarian options available in Rome so when we came upon Il Margutta and saw the menu we booked a reservation. Ended up being one of the best meals we had all week. Great presentation and service and ambiance. Had the Apple, Mango and Stracciatella cheese, cruelty free seitan skewers, and basil soup as starters, ravioli stuffed with burrata, eggplant meatballs, risotto riserva. Everything was great and the bread was very good. A stroll back to our apartment through the Rome streets capped off the evening. Highly recommended. read more

There is a lot to be said for a vegetarian restaurant in Rome, considering that a traditional Osteria (unlike Il Margutta) is not very vegetarian friendly. There is also the comparison factor of how much a traditional tourist trap restaurant would cost, which is still more than IL Margutta. The lunch buffet runs from 12:00 to 4 PM, although technically this means until 3. Reason being that italian restaurants have a hard close at 4 and reopen for dinner. Now let's get to the restaurant itself. Number one, the restaurant is on via Margutta (as named). So plan to get there via taxi or metro, because the city tour busses do not strop you nearby. The restaurant itself is attractive, with a nice clean interior with it's own cafe and bar. Outside is a nice carpeted area and between the two is the buffet during lunch. The food itself was simple and excellent. You have a choice of 3 brunch packages ranging up to 18 Euro for the "Happy" package which includes all brunch options, wine, cappuccino, and cake. If you're eating said happy option, don't expect to eat the rest of the day. 8 hours and 8 miles of walking around later, I'm not even remotely hungry yet. The food itself ranges from Greek style (cucumbers with Greek yogurt) to Indian style (a mild Indian tofu curry) to traditional brunch style (an egg casserole) and Italian style (explicitly common but not Roman style). By which I mean pomodoro pasta(red/tomato sauce) , risotto with pesto, eggplant parmesan, and a pasta salad with vinaigrette. Brunch can also include(based on package) fresh fruit, bulgar salad and juice/bread as well. If you haven't had the impression by now, there is a lot of food. Which is good because it's all very good food. Nothing was any worse than good, and many dishes were great! The bill as mentioned was 36 Euro, which beats the average 40-50+ at nice restaurants and was well worth it. Anyone going to Italy(rome) , this place is a must try. read more

Wandering around the streets trying to dodge the glutentastic temptations surrounding me, I stumbled across this cool, quirky restaurant. Courgetti are my complete obsession at home so I was beyond excited to taste my first "restaurant" version. Now call me biased, but I have to say that the ones I make at home are way better. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the dish, it was very good but I expected the courgettes to be hot and not completely raw. I have been vegetarian for 23 years and am constantly searching for good restaurants that support great vegetarian cuisine; Il Margutta is one of the best I've ever had. The pasta in carbonara sauce with truffle was the best white sauce with pasta I've had in my life. We actually came back again just for that one dish it was so good. The other dishes were good as well but not as incredible. Great personable service, pleasant atmosphere, and no problem with table wait in early November. This was the first place at which I ate in Italy! What a great way to start off my 2-week Italian adventure. Once I got past the language barrier and learned how to communicate a little bit, I could figure out what each dish was in this buffet-style, vegetarian restaurant. TONS of fresh veggies, which says a lot since I was coming from California. The staff was very helpful and friendly in trying to explain things to me. They even had plenty of options for my wife, who is both vegan and gluten-free! Though you can eat a lot, given that it's a buffet, the meal still feels light (especially compared to all the pasta in Italy!). I had asparagus soup with ginger and lime which had amazing flavor. We tried the peach selection for dessert, which comes only after some Chantilly cream to cleanse the palate. The food was good and I greatly enjoyed some dishes - the charred potato soup with grated coffee and the vegan canoli were highlights- however, others were not especially innovative and were similar to plates I already cook at home. This restaurant is a perfect example of spectacular food overshadowed by poor management. The food and drinks we had were delicious but the dining room became busy once we got around to dessert. Even though the waitstaff was very friendly, after being given the dessert menu, we weren't approached for nearly 45 minutes (I even did what I usually avoid and tried to get the waiter's attention). The waitstaff are wonderful but clearly the management here needs to deploy one or two more waiters during evenings. Once it was clear we were going to be sitting for even longer, we got up and went to the hostess to pay for our meal and weren't asked by anyone why we were paying at the front. It's such a pity because we could tell the waiters were rushing around frantically, visibly frustrated by the workload. I would be very angry if I worked here because a waiter is meant to establish relationships with clients, not attending to a dozen tables at once. Sprung for the 6 course vegan meal and I'm glad I did. I spent a pretty penny, but that was some of the most decadent vegan food I've ever had. I don't speak italian and unfortunately have terrible memory so I cannot describe what I hadn't I just remember leaving that restaurant feeling like vegan royalty. Side note, their dinner isn't opened until 7pm and we went there at 6 ordered drinks and were brought little finger foods which was a nice touch. We are primarily vegetarian and although Rome offers great options in most restaurants, we wanted to try this place as it is a strictly vegetarian restaurant. We arrived on a hot day and wanted to be seated inside. We were told there was no seating due to reservations so we decided an outside table would be fine as we were hungry. There were multiple parties who arrived after us without reservations who were seated inside. Not okay!! We went in for the brunch buffet and were pretty well underwhelmed with the options. The food was not good, but more striking was the customer service experience, which was certainly the worst we've had in a long time. The kitchen wasn't open yet when we sat down, so we ordered two juices. The first one sat on the counter for about 10 minutes separating into its layers until the second one showed up, and when we finally received these two miserable 7 Euro juices in a tiny champagne glass it was 20 minutes after we had ordered them. Then, it was possible to order a meal, which we did. It took exactly 30 minutes for the restaurant to deliver our first course, and I do believe one of my hairs turned grey in the meantime. We were the ONLY table at the restaurant at this time. My salad included an avocado that was so unripe, it flew away when I tried to fork it at a velocity that nearly broke my glass. My fiancee's lasagna was pretty good though. The second course took no less than another 25 God damned minutes to arrive - 55 minutes after we had ordered. I had ordered the seitan stew, which was overpriced at best, and my fiancee ordered the burger which was a sad and dry ordeal we wish we had never encountered in this lifetime.
