I had a quiet dinner by myself outside at Jaipur because sometimes even I need a break from Italian food. I ordered my favorite Indian dish, mattar paneer. They make it not spicy because it's for Italians, I am told, when I was asked how spicy I like it. But first I was brought a plate of several curries and crackers. I also ate cheese naan. One of the best finds in terms of an Indian restaurant when you are in Rome and want to enjoy your very own Indian cuisine. Me and my colleagues were looking for something Indian as the day was Diwali and we were away from home. Luckily we were able to find Jaipur which was open until 11:30PM and thought to have a diwali dinner. The place is huge when you enter and has a good ambience overall. The staff and the restaurant owners are super friendly. We ordered the tasting menu for two and the spread was huge (check pictures). Everything tasted just perfect with the amazing deserts. Aloo samosa, Palak paneer, dal makhni and Gulabjamun are highly recommended if you are looking for vegetarian. In addition owners were super nice and invited us for a small Diwali Pooja and Prasad. We went here tonight based on all the great reviews. Bad choice. Just not good. Maybe it's because we ordered the standard thali special. Maybe not ordering from the inside menu says this person has low expectations so give them just that. Giving them the benefit of the doubt that they may be able to do better. We live in a small US city and have better Indian food served in our dying shopping mall's food court. If you are from a city with good Indian food and appreciate it, this will probably not be a very good meal for you. If you are like us and were thinking Rome seems like the cosmopolitan city where one can take a break from the wonderful food and of Italy, this isn't the place. I'm sure good ethnic food does exist. It has to. Right? Back to the thali special. The samosas were leaden, with greasy pastry and a gloppy, bland, mostly potato filling. Same for the meaty round version they serve, presented sliced in half (many hours before service)--Dark and dry from air exposure. Both "antipasti" were cooked hours ahead and fried then refried. Tandoori chicken legs were OK, but bland (at this point we tried to brighten the flavors by ordering raita, which was OK but oldish with no fresh cilantro or garlic or raw onion--god forbid fresh scallion! (Beginning to wonder if raw onion just not a thing in Rome?) (Similarly, many local patrons asked a lot of questions and expressed concerns about the food's spiciness, so perhaps that's one reason everything's so disappointingly bland?). Anyway. Chicken curry was good. Eggplant dish was NOT good--steely and soupy and cold and icky. And bland. The spinach saag was the worst--with the color and charm of canned spinach held on the stove for about 6 hours. Rice pilaf seemed flavored with bouillon cubes. Or maybe it was just really old and desiccated. (Bright, white, fresh basmati would be our preference ) Then came the dessert. A gritty green half frozen thing with all the characteristics of split pea ice cream, and a warmish carrot thing with chunks of not-sweet-enough to be desserty carrots, but maybe there was pumpkin too. Anyway. We tried but just couldn't eat them. Check please. And fir all that we paid 65 euros including a bottle of sauvignon blanc that was EXCELLENT. Highlight for f the evening. read more

OMG! Amazing, outstanding, phenomenal Indian food. Growing up in India and having lived in the NY area, our bar for Indian food is very high, and this restaurant easily well exceeded those expectations. On our two week trip of Switzerland and Italy we ate at several Indian restaurants to balance out the local cuisine, but this was by far the best. Embarrassed to admit, we ate here, not once, not twice but three times and each time we ordered something different from the menu and each dish was fantastic. After more than a week of non stop pasta and pizza in Italy, my friend and I decided that we should see what other types of foods Rome has to offer. After looking all over we saw that there was an Indian restaurant that had pretty good reviews. Jaipur for dinner it was! To begin our meal we got an order of vegetable samosas that were absolutely delicious. It may be the best thing I had at the restaurant. They were perfectly cooked and scrumptious. We also got an order of naan that was great too. For my meal I decided on getting the Jaipuru Murgh. It could have been better, but it was still pretty good. My friend got the chicken Tikka Masala, which she said was great. I tried a bite of it, and I thought the Tikka Masala was better than my meal. For dessert I got the Kulfi which is an almond and pistachio ice cream which was amazing. I loved it! My friend got the Nariyal ki Kulfi which was a coconut ice cream. My friend claimed it was the best coconut ice cream she had on the trip. Overall, Jaipur was very tasty! I was a much appreciated and much needed change from the usual Italian fare offered throughout Rome. read more

Dining at Jaipur was a most excellent experience. The meal started off with complementary champagne; how can that ever be a bad thing? My husband and I ordered the vegetarian degustazione meal for two, which was a great price for all the food that came with it (we couldn't even finish off the deliciousness). The waitstaff was incredibly hospitable and one waiter even walked us down the street after dinner to point us in the direction of the tram stop. I have been going to this restaurant for many years and love it every time! I first came across Jaipur while attending university in Rome while I was a vegetarian and always found something yummy to eat - at a great price that even a student can afford. Every time I visit Rome since I moved to Greece I make sure to stop by (I now eat meat and there are even more things to try!!!) The staff is really nice and speaks in Italian and English and the place is cute and clean. Stopped here for dinner with a party of 7 and a baby. We used the inside room, which was large, cool and quiet. The service was exceptionally attentive. The waiter made sure to check in on us frequently, without hovering, quickly removed empty glasses etc. The meal started with a complementary drink, which was unexpected and welcome. We had a pakora (fried vegetable in batter) appetizer and a tandoori sampler plate. The pakora was ok, the tandoori sampler was excellent. The fish tandoori and various chicken pieces were very good. We ordered several dishes, Rohan Josh was the most memorable, the chicken Jalfreeze and palak paneer were also good. The chickens tikka masala was different from what I used to. We had several kinds of breads (roti, nans, kulchas, aloo (potato) parata etc). Although they were all good, some were cool by the time I got to them. I should have ordered a few first and and more later, to make sure I was consuming them at peak freshness. We ended with a pista kulfi, which was a nice creamy and sweet end to dinner. I came here with Kathryn S after a marathon of Italian delicacies. By time we made it to Rome it was time for a break and it seemed Indian was our best bet. Jaipur was close to our hotel and had good reviews so we decided to give it a try. We started with the veggie samosas which were super tasty and a good start to our first non-Italian meal. Then I had the Tikka Masala chicken that was delicious nice and spicy but still flavorful. It was so good that when I was done I had to try desert and they had coconut gelato. Didn't even have to read any further I was in. One of the best gelatos of my trip and when I got my ice cream maker for christmas I tried to replicate it, didnt quite get there but it was a still a good reminder of a great meal. read more

In an international context, this place is definitely just an okay Indian restaurant. In bella Roma, however, where Indian restaurants are like hen's teeth and it's difficult to find anything much spicier than a curry puff, Jaipur is a godsend. They have a pretty extensive vegetarian menu, make decent naan, and will actually make their curries properly spicy if you ask. Curries come with lots of sambals and have identifiable bits of fresh herbs in them. When you're tired of the innumerable local trattorias in Trastevere and fancy something from further abroad, I'd come here for the palak paneer. read more

Not very many choices in Italy and after eating pizza and pasta for 6 days - all excellent - we craved some excellent spicy food. We found Jaipur on Yelp. Food was excellent ... it hit the spot. Food very fresh and not oily. Service was excellent. The decor is a little dated but the service and food quality made up for it. Jaipur is completely authentic. If you are knowledgeable about Indian food, you'll appreciate that this is the real thing. Everything we've eaten here has been wonderful. I particularly like their onion kulcha and the chicken tikka. Service is excellent. Since they are all Indians, you will have no trouble if you speak English and don't know any Italian. My wife and I spent 16 days in Italy and loved the pasta etc. at all the amazing restaurants in Italy. The day before we were to depart back to the States, I thought I needed some Indian food so I happened to come across Jaipur. What a delightful surprise! We live in Chicago and being an Indian, I know Indian food and Indian restaurants. I have to say that I would be hard pressed to say that I have had better Indian food in any restaurant in Chicago. The only thing that could top the Jaipur offering would be my mother's cooking and she unfortunately is no longer living. Needless to say, you cannot go wrong with Jaipur. We had a great experience at Jaipur...great food, nice atmosphere, not too crowded. Then we got the bill. They charged me 3.00 euros for a cup of yogurt because it wasn't on the menu. They also charged us for the bread they said was "complementary." The food was great, but just know what you're getting into. Make sure you know what's free and what's not and what they will charge you for things. They will rip you off otherwise. read more
