You walk into a dimly lit vestibule and through a door that you're not sure is the right door--or if it'll work. The furniture looks like it's from 1978. The walls could probably use some paint. You pay at a window, which is a little quirky. As we say in the software game, that's not a bug; it's a feature. If you know anything about the economics of independent restaurants, you know that what I've just described is what you should be looking for. As a stop for a quick meal on highway 54, La Pasadita totally works out. You'll get a plate of solid Mexican cuisine from a friendly server, and be able to pay your money (at the window, of course) and get back on the road in a reasonable amount of time. The enchiladas are delicious. I had mine Christmas style (one with red sauce and one with green) and both sauces tasted great. The sopaipillas are warm and airy. Service was pretty good considering it was one waitress to the entire room. Food was just meh. Ordered carne asada tacos and there was barely any meat to them. The pico they served it with had bell peppers instead of jalapeños, came with lettuce, and a lemon as well. No onions or cilantro. The tortillas were soaked with grease and soggy because of that. The carne asada seemed to just be greasy steak meat with no actual carne asada elements, at least flavor wise. Maybe I've been spoiled by living close to the border, but I don't think that was the case here. read more

We stopped here in Dalhart to get gas on the way to Colorado. My wife spotted a place that advertised Barbacoa so we were all in. When we found it, it was just a little taqueria with a few tables that were mostly full and one man at the counter waiting on his order. We finally got to the country and ordered 6 Barbacoa tacos to go. And we waited, and waited. The wife finally took our son to go sit in the truck. The people at the tables were all eating. One guy came in and had a pick up order to go, he paid and was out the door. The guy that was ahead of us finally got his order and left and I was still waiting. Even though the tables were already eating they seemed to be giving them more food!!! Maybe it was part of their original order, I don't know! Still waiting. Finally after about 25-30 minutes I got our tacos, barbacoa with for tortillas with onions and cilantro. And they gave us a small container of red salsa and one of salsa Verde or green salsa. I went out to the truck and we were starving now and started trying to add our onions and cilantro and green sauce for me. The grease in the barbacoa had already softened my tortilla to the point it just busted open. The wife not real keen on green sauce tried the red, I knew better, I was thinking chiltepin or bird eye pepper salsa. She quickly asked for the green as the red sauce lit her up!! I was a little disappointed at how greasy the barbacoa was and not only that it was just lacking any flavor and salt helped a little. But like Lyle Lovett said in an article awhile back, don't eat Mexican food North of Dallas or West of Austin or San Antonio!!! I really miss our favorite barbacoa places around League City, Webster, and Texas City. read more

Stopped in on the way to Colorado Springs. Chips were a bit lacking salsa was tasty. My wife had the enchilada plate #1 on the menus, I had the #4 Colorado chili. Small town with not much around, so with that in mind, this was a great find. Ambiance is authentic (i.e. Kind of shabby and run down looking), but service was prompt and cheerful. Dalhart is not much of a destination town - really a thruway location. As such, it's mostly fast food and a couple of local eateries. This one was pretty good, far better than the previous one we had on our Bataan death march motorbike ride. Menudo! Lots of it, with tasty beans and a big side of extra onions and greens. And the flour tortillas - usually it's the corn ones I like but the home made flour ones were really really good. Dive-y atmosphere and friendly prompt service made it all go down just fine. read more

After 8 hours on the road, we wanted to eat "local" instead for "corporate". The tip off that this was not going to be good was that there were only 4 other people in the place when we came in. Stopped here on a roadtrip with my little brother. We felt a little out of place, parking my tiny, sea foam green toyota echo amongst a parking lot filled with trucks, but decided an adventure was an adventure. Okay, it took us a few tries to find the door into the actual restaurant, but we did. We got a basket of chips made it house (yum), a little bowl of salsa AND some nacho cheese. we didn't really get into the nacho cheese. Nick was afraid of the effect of unknown mexican cuisine on his stomach for the remaining 4+hours of our trip, and opted for a chicken sandwich. It was actual chicken pieces, not a patty (Hooray!), grilled, and with big, wide-cut french fries that were neither terribly crispy nor packed with flavor. They were alright. I had the enchilada plate. My brother scared me away from ordering the carnitas I truly desired, so I got cheese enchiladas. The refried beans and rice were tasty. Both of us left satisfied. Is it the greatest thing I've ever eaten? Probably not. Was if far tastier than I expected? Indeed. Did I watch our server refill baskets of chips from an actual TRASH CAN full of chips? Good food, it was served quickly with decent portion sizes. Homemade, huge tortillas, and one member of my party got fried catfish, wasn't just a hunk of fish, he had to remove the skeleton from it. We got chips and dip complimentary, but the waitress looked incredibly rushed. She took our orders, brought our drinks and food and that's all. I had to find her to get a refill on my tea. This is about as far from Taco Bell as you can get. And that's a good thing. Great food with awesome, one-on-one service. We stopped here while on a road trip. It's not the best food we've ever had, but it definitely wasn't the worst. We didn't realize that you had to pay at the window. We kept waiting for the waitress to come back and take the payment. We felt like we were crowding the table of people sitting next to the window because there wasn't enough room. Decent Mexican road trip food. We too, had trouble locating the entrance. We walked around the building before we tried the right door. A little signage would help. Yes to the grimy and dingy interior. But service was good. Lotsa locals seemed to enjoy the food. We're a little TexMex spoiled in DFW, so we weren't terribly impressed. Chips and salsa were OK. Standards like enchiladas and tacos were OK. The chile relleno however was very bready and slimy. Not edible. Rice was OK. Beans must have been very good because my friend ate his and then asked for mine. Since we were sharing a hotel bed later that night I questioned the wisdom of this, but he scarfed them down and all worked out fine. I went and had lunch around 2 PM during a weekday. Upon entering this place, it was actually sort of depressing. No personality, and not welcoming. I had the special of the day which was Carnitas. I do have to admit the rice and beans were very tasty, and I like the fact that the two tortillas were very large and fresh. But, the Carnitas meat was disgusting. They fried it so long it was hard as rocks, literally. It hurt my teeth to eat it. Plus, it had the taste of freezer burn, like the meat had been in the freezer for a long time. I don't live in Dalhart, was just there on business. I have to say if I go back to Dalhart, I will not return to this restaurant although I wish them the best of luck with their business. I hope they read this review and they can learn from it. Maybe some of the other food was good on the menu. I wished I had got the chile verde. Maybe that would've been better. The surrounding area may be a little sketchy, but once inside the dining area was clean. 32 oz horchata was great for 1.99, and the entire meal for 3 came out to $32. We stopped here on our way from Houston to Vail at 2pm on a Thursday, so the parking lot only had one car. We decided to try it anyway and were glad we did. The staff was very friendly, the tortilla chips were hot and fresh, the salsa was freshly homemade as well. I had the combo with pork hot tamales and a beef enchilada. Again, very fresh and obviously homemade. My wife had a beef taco and chicken enchilada. Service was friendly, prompt and competent. These people should be avoided. I bought 2 lunches to go today they added $5 to the bill in error for drinks. They refused to give me the difference back because I paid with a credit card. That's an interesting way to increase profits, but isn't that illegal? Food was ill prepared, greasy and tasteless. Customers complain of the dirty tables and dishes that aren't removed when dining customers leave. A lot of local residents simply avoid La Pasadita. That seems to be a good decision. read more
