You have to make quick decisions because there will be a line and you won't be able to see all your options until you're at the front. Hands down, best French pastries in East Bay. Still an undiscovered nook, in a small warehouse near 4th Berkeley. I came across it on a weekday morning after brunch. Only downside? It's only open Wednesday and Saturday, with Saturdays running out faster in selection because it's a day off for most folks. Best day? Wednesday's, when you get some time off. What's good here? Everything. I'm not joking. Crossiants, croquets, danishes, kouign amann, cannelles are also amazing. Perfect layers, crispy where it should be and soft/flaky in the perfect bites. My favorite is their pistachio strawberry croissant and smoked ham/goat cheese/egg croque. I wish I could live here. Come, order lots and you won't be disappointed. En route to Third Culture Bakery, I noticed a small little sign and behind that sign was an assortment of pastries laid across a table. Ever so studious, I quickly opened my yelp app and did my research to come to the conclusion that I will definitely come back in a few minutes to load up on breakfast for the week. Upon walking in, I was extremely delighted to see the various savory options in addition to the sweet pastry options. Pretty sure by the time we finished picking our choices, we made a decent dent in what was available for all others who came after us. The crustless quiche or vegetable flan had 2 options. One which included mushrooms and the other spinach. I would say that the spinach was more flavorful that it made the mushroom less enjoyable. Had I ate these in reverse order, I believe that it would have been much better. Going overboard on the Croques: mushroom, ham & egg, shrimp, and lardon, these were all enjoyable with shrimp surprisingly being the highlight and mushroom being the lowlight of the bunch perhaps just lacking a pinch of extra salt. Amongst the other sweeter options: strawberry pistachio croissant, vanilla cream cheese cake Danish, tordu, valrhona chocolate chip cookie, all items were good and I would be happy to eat all the items again. Reflecting on my breakfast and mid day snacking for the week, I did feel content with the choices we selected but the only thing that was missing was that one item or more that would make you want to run outside and tell all your friends about. These are some of the best pastries you can find in all of Berkeley. I would defiantly recommend getting there early because in the afternoon they don't have many pastries left. I also recommend MAKING SURE IT IS OPEN most days it's closed. On Sunday it is open but it is at a farmer's market that's out of town. Overall an amazing bakery. read more

However, I came to comment on La Noisette's Yelp page for one reason, and one reason only--I love the chocolate chip cookie! (And the strawberry cookie, whenever that's available.) This guy is the best baker in the world! You must stop by his place and try him out. Everything that he makes is amazing. He uses great local ingredients like the Baconer, a local bacon company that makes the best bacon around. When you walk into his store you are filled with that amazing fresh baked smell and you see a unmatched variety of the most beautiful baked goods you have ever seen. He has both sweat and savory. Just wow. I've visited Alain before, at the Kensington Farmer's Market on Sundays. His canelé are a *perfect 10* (and that's on a French scale, where nothing is ever actually perfect). They're chewy and almost burnt caramelized goodness on the outside, and custard-soft on the inside, with little specks of vanilla bean, and the subtle aroma of dark rum. Yum. I visited his bakery in West Berkeley for the first time today. He's located right next to Standard Fare, at the corner of 8th and Carleton. Lucky for me, he's only open on Wednesdays--Having easy access to such perfect French pastries is dangerous for my waistline, but oh so good for my soul. Once a week is okay, right? Today I picked up some sweets to bring home for my girls, along with two savory pastries for lunch: one with duck confit a l'orange, and the other with prosciutto, mozzarella, fresh tomato, and a dollop of fig compote. Both were delicious. I convinced myself I was enjoying a healthy lunch by adding a green salad from next-door. While visiting the bakery, Alain insisted I try his chocolate bread (twist my arm). The flavor reminded me of a classic french sourdough (pain au levain), with all the whole grain goodness, but it was also full of chocolate. It was surprising and wonderful. I asked if there would be any more for the day and the chef overheard my question and said there would be more in about 5 to 10 minutes. I bumped into this lovely French pastry shop at the vintage fair at Alameda last Sat. And this is the best booth at that venue that day! I first bought a salmon croissant, croque Madame, Canalè and Nutella Kouign Amann. The Salmon croissant was sooo good that I went back to buy second one after my first bite. The smoke salmon and mustard and the buttery croissant dough together tasted perfect even though it's cold. Croque Madame was a creative item. Bottom is a croissant base, and then added a layer of Roux, ham, and finally add egg on the top. The roux is smooth and not too heavy, the egg is a hard baked yolk in the middle and mine has a little gooey egg white. Love it! Canelè can be better on the shell, but the batter tasted fine. Nutella Kouign Amann, I just can't resist anything with Nutella! It has chocolate in the core and Nutella on top! So my second order was salmon croissant, pistachio raspberry croissant, chocolate hazelnut croissant, coffee moelleux. Pistachio raspberry croissant has plenty of fresh raspberry and green pistachio filling inside and on top. Actually this one was a bit disappointing because o didn't taste much of pistachio, made me doubt if the green was food coloring. I didn't taste the hazelnut chocolate croissant... It was eaten by my friend who likes it. The coffee moelleux had two golden powder-coated coffee bean chocolate on the top. Those made the moelleux looks attractive, but the chocolate was a bit waxy. However the moelleux was very delicious! Dense and rich chocolate filling . This bakery is quite a pleasure surprise for me! They make good buttery croissants but not greasy and very generous on using good materials like smoked salmon, raspberries, etc! I will definitely want to visit the shop in Berkely! read more

I got the pistachio chocolate croissant, which was buttery and flakey but didn't overpower the taste of the pistachio that sits inside and on top of the croissant. The Kouign Amann - hard caramelized and buttery exterior with a soft and slightly spongecake-like texture inside- melted in my mouth in such ease. The passion fruit danish had the perfect balance of sweetness without the overwhelming tartness of the passion fruit. And lastly, the dark chocolate cookie with sea salt had a rich, bitter taste that complements the subtle amount of sea salt on top. read more
