So the Chronicle had some good reviews on this place so we went to try it out. Got there just before 3 to miss the crowd.... Order Margs, I like mine on the rocks with no salt. Sitting at the bar I got to watch him pour mine from a mixed bottle, maybe 8-10 ounces over ice that added to the mix because it melted right away, cost $9.50... for $9.50 I expect at least smell some tequila. Should be a notice that if you want to get that happy buzz you will need at least 2-3.... Ordered the queso flameado to start and it was the finish. The chorizo was mild enough to feed to a baby and the cheese was way too skimpy. But that didn't stop them charging $16.25. The worst by far was the small amount of chips they brought first were stall or cooked in old grease... now mind you I'm trying to keep away from carbs so I should thank them so that. So we won't be back, Gringos is closer to home and a lot better. But don't take my word for it, go try it for yourself and let me know if you had a better experience. read more

I normally enjoy coming to this place and eat their machacado a la mexicana. Today was lunch time so decided to try something different. The mole sauce was delicious, however the beans were sour or tasted spoiled and were cold. I gave this visit 3 stars because the service was lacking on this visit. Our waiter had an attitude from the beginning and for every refill had to be called upon, as he was in the corner with other waiters talking and laughing not paying attention to his tables. The other waiters were watching their tables, but ours had his back to us the entire time. The ambiance was not as welcoming on this visit. This was my second time and I took my wife because I had bragged about the place. Such a disappointment in the customer service. Let's do better next time. The green sauce was better than the red. Chips are fresh. They have aguas frescas, sodas and plenty of adult beverages. The ambiance is nice and there are plenty of TV's on. I would change everything. Starting with getting rid of Manuel G. He was terrible, rude, entitled, and just THE WORST server I have had the absolute displeasure of encountering. The food was overall decent; I got a couple breakfast tacos and felt the filling was tasty but the tortillas were a bit hard and not fresh. Some friends got the breakfast platters and those looked better, so I'd recommend those over the tacos alone. The chips and salsa were good! I first discovered LA Mexicana when looking for breakfast tacos for a work meeting. Everything was very good and clearly homemade (including the tortillas). So, I ordered delivery for myself today. Of course I had to get some more breakfast tacos, but I also tried a few other things. The tacos are good portions. Even the chorizo & egg, and macahacado & egg tacos have good portions of chorizo and machacado. They definitely don't skimp on the ingredients. I also tried the carne guisada plate (with refried beans, rice and tortillas). They forgot my tortillas but everything is so good that I don't even care. Haha. (I always have tortillas, or can make my own.) Once again, fresh and homemade. Very good. The ONE thing I did NOT like was the tres leches. First of all, it's the smallest $10 piece of tres leches I've ever seen. That wouldn't be so bad if it tasted good. It didn't have much flavor or sweetness. (HEB has better tres leches.) To put it quite simply, it's tortilla chips covered in a tomato based sauce and slathered in cheese. It tastes pretty simple and there's nothing to rave about here. But it's tortilla chips covered in cheese so of course I ate all of it. Refried beans are ok, not the best I've had. I started off with a small guava marg and quickly wished I got the big one. This drink was so delicious and refreshing and a perfect compliment to a breakfast meal. On another visit I ordered a shrimp quesadilla which I loved because it was seasoned and had pico inside! The rice and beans were average. I also tried the chicken and beef fajita quesadillas but those were just bland. The one thing I really did not like here was the queso. I promise you it tasted like a thick flour gravy.
