The tacos are delicious, very authentic. The horchata was really good too. Will definitely get it again.

I go here for meals to-go on occasion. It's a combination of a small grocery store and restaurant in one. The items I've ordered, usually tostadas, have always successfully "scratched the itch" of eating Mexican food. I'm sure the tostadas, tacos, and even the Mexican crema are all prepackaged but there's still something so satisfying about the combination of crunchy corn chip with protein on top. The tang of lime juice, crema fat, julienned lettuce, pico de Gallo, and fresh avocado slices with your choice of either red or green salsa added to the dish is a winner. Wandering the aisles, looking at different items for sale (dried chiles and spices, fresh pineapples and mangos, a whole slew of different hot sauces, various soaps and shampoos, even molcajetes, piloncillo, aji amarillo, lime mayonnaise, Mexican chocolate, queso Oaxaca, or cotija cheese) is always enjoyable. For something unique, try the tlayuda - "Mexican pizza with refried beans, two Mexican cheeses, avocado slices, Al pastor steak, and chorizo." I like this place because it's local to me and I want to support local, independently-owned businesses. The cashiers have also been patient and understanding when I try to pronounce different items in halting, broken Spanish.

Good margaritas (although didn't taste or feel the tequila), but honestly was underwhelmed by the food. The chips and salsa were just store bought and very average. The guacamole lacked any spice of flavor at all. Then the entrees came out and the flautas were good, but my tacos were cold and subpar. Not sure if they were ready earlier and then the waitress waited to bring it all together, but wish they'd timed it better to have all the food be hot :( The vibe of this place is very casual and I was expecting more food for a lower price given that the atmosphere was kind of lacking. Will probably not return.

Solid food for crazy prices that you'd expect 5 years ago. At least at the standard of NYC pricing. I wouldn't expect to find a place with such decent food in the middle nowhere, but here we are. I came in 40minutes shy of closing and staff was more than accommodating. After I ordered, the waitress unceremoniously dumped a good heap of tortilla chips, enough for 3 people, as well as a cauldron full of salsa. It was a cozy and welcoming affair. Get the shrimp tostada, because holy cow that was a lot of shrimp and avocado. I genuinely don't understand how they price it so low without losing money. Tacos are also standard and pretty much a must. I don't think you can really go wrong with anything on the menu. This is definitely top 2 within a 20mile radius.

One of my favorite places to go for lunch in Schenectady. You simply can't beat their tacos; for $2, their al pastor is the best in the capital region. The cow's tongue can be hit or miss, but the service is wonderful and they have a great selection of freshly made baked goods to satisfy your sweet tooth in the grocery section of the store. Parking can be tight, but their is an adjoining neighborhood where street parking is allowed. Clean, fresh, and authentic, you have go try them out.

They've reopened! Love their nachos and quesadillas. The tacos are awesome. The tres leches cake is delicate!

Much better than the nearby Mexicana Grossery which is just Gross. What to get: Tacos. The Horchata here doesn't do it for me (I'd rather listen to the gossiping of male and female escorts), but then I'm incredibly picky about Horchata, and am in love with the likes of Suadero (NYC) and Taco Nazo (Columbus). However the homemade, street-style authentic Mexican tacos are delicious and delightful. Definitely the best I've had in the Albany area, and some of the best in NY state, including NYC, believe it or not. I can't even name 10 tacos places in NY state I like better than La Mexicana, and I've tried them all, so it's a glowing 5-star review from me. The meat is juicy, everything is made the way it's supposed to me (with cilantro y cebollas), they're cheap, generous, filling, and service is nice. Might take awhile for the tacos, but you can browse the awesome grocery store while you're waiting and check out all of the Mexican delicacies. What I can say is: this guy Mex a good taco.

Thinking about @JonInAlbany as I enjoy this lovely lengua taco. Great carnitas today too.

Thank God for La Mexicana. Let's be clear about one thing right off the bat. Not all of the food here is five star food. This is Schenectady, not San Francisco. But the fact that we can get tasty authentic $2 street tacos this far north, is nothing short of remarkable. Not all of their fillings are great. The grilled chicken and steak fall short. My favorite thing on the menu is that carnitas torta (which really needs to be ordered with extra jalapenos to help cut through all that delicious fat). But I'm perfectly happy making a light lunch out of three tacos. I'm partial to the lengua and chorizo in my soft corn tacos. It's topped with the traditional chopped onion and cilantro. There is no lettuce or tomatoes to be found on these babies. And that's just the way it should be. Steer clear of the savory tamales. The sweeter tamale elote is a bit better. Their massive tlayuda is fun to get once, if you have someone to share it with, but their are better things to get on your first time out. If you've never had horchata, the sweet rice and cinnamon drink, you should try it. The flavors go great with the food. And I also like their tres leches on those rare occasions when I can imagine eating dessert. A family of 10 could feast here for the price of a dinner for two at Mexican Radio. La Mex now even has a bar shoved into its minuscule dining room. Go there. Eat real Mexican food. Be happy. But if you're coming from the west coast, you probably should skip it. La Mex is great for here, but it would be closer to a 3* joint in the Mission (on the strength of that torta).

I am in need of cactus leaves I don't live in Albany but my daughter does does anyone know where I can purchase some?

Yes, I believe they have cactus leaves at La Mexicana Grocery. Since your daughter lives in Albany she may want to first check out Mexican Market at 654 Central Avenue. It might be closer. Or Oaxaquena Triqui at 77 North Lake Ave.

In this case, the cuisine offered at Los Chamos is Venezuelan. Upon entering the establishment, I noticed a music/karaoke machine in the front corner. Tables were interspersed in the main area which surrounded a bar and ordering station. A preteen sat at one of the tables, playing on her phone. A young man worked the ordering station. Early on a Saturday afternoon, noticing a fridge with beers displayed, I ordered a Modelo and looked through the menu. I ordered a Chile Colorado and empanadas con pollo to go. Two things right off the bat - 1. First taste - It was good food. It was satisfying in a way that spoke of generational recipes rather than or despite culinary training. It is soul satisfying stuff. 2. If you can finish this meal in one sitting, good on you! Generous portions and the heartiness of the meal add to the "warmth" of the experience. A couple of details - the mayonnaise-based sauce for the empanadas was something I'd never tried before - lots of garlic, cilantro, a bit of water to loosen it, maybe some vinegar for acid...I liked it. The braised black beans had a little chili heat to liven it up. I'll definitely go back. I may not be fluent in Spanish or be knowledgeable about Venezuela but I find the food to be inviting and soulful.

It is indeed worth going inside for a delicious meal. Los Chamos' menu has a good selection that includes many traditional Venezuelan dishes: pabellón, arepas, cachapas, tequeños, empanadas. There is also an extremely disconcerting section of the menu devoted to seemingly-Mexican dishes. Perhaps that is to attract customers in an area with a smaller Venezuelan population and a small population of people who are familiar with Venezuelan cuisine. I don't know. But I also don't care. I was, of course, able to sample the pabellón criollo and the tequeños. Astoundingly, tequeños can be a good indicator of quality in Venezuelan restaurants in the US, and these ones pass the test. They also have moñongos, an item from Zulia (and it shows) that is effectively a thick tequeño with ham and plantain and meat as well. Healthy? Tasty. The venue has a decent amount of seating and the staff are friendly. They also sell a small selection of Venezuelan products, such as ovomaltina and Savoy chocolates. If you live in the area and have never tried Venezuelan food, now is your opportunity to do so. It's not spicy either, for those of you with weak stomachs. Overall, I would highly recommend Los Chamos. Hopefully their business succeeds.

Tiny's make a killer freakin taco pizza…read more As a lazy Sunday evening feast for 4 roomates, or one last meal to remember before college graduation, a Tiny's Taco Pizza occupied many happy days (and most of my intestinal tract) during my college years. I know it was pretty cheap 10 years ago, but no matter what the cost, the sheer mass of the pizza (which amazingly seems to double once its in your stomach) makes it a bargain at any price. Three suggestions for any newbies: 1. Get extra napkins. After a few bites you will have taco sauce (ok...grease) dripping down your fingers (ok...arms) which may stop you from eating (ok...you won't care). 2. Careful when you pick up your piece. Without proper support, half of your topping will slide right off. Which is really fine because fighting 3 other guys for the slop left in the box is part of Tiny's charm. 3. DO NOT order a soft taco with your pizza. As fantastic as they are, after seeing and devouring the pizza you will try and twist your torso in an attempt to consolidate the food in your gut and clear a small corner of your stomach for the remaining taco to no avail. Unless you're like me. Then order 2. I also suggest you order in and not actually go there. Go armed or stay home. Both with a weapon and some disinfectant.

In fact, if you are lucky enough to have experienced the thrill of digestion of even a portion of one of these pies, odds are that, like me, you wouldn't be able to summon a recollection superlative enough to do it justice. Perhaps this mnemonic conundrum arises as a result of the tender love with which this heavenly foodstuff is prepared, or it may be due to the weighty (heavier than your average pair of month old twins) apportioning of mexican-style toppings (available in your choice of 1; cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa, black olives, seasoned ground beef, sour cream and jalapenos, or 2: something inherently inferior to choice one), or, (and if you can follow the clauses of this sentence, congratulations) it may be due to the sheer heft of uncontrollably consumed Taco Pizza sitting on the nerve that connects your stomach to your brain. In short, if there is in fact a God, and he does in fact order take out, and he does not, by presumption, have nasty smelling farts but rather well fragranced ones which draw smiling people from afar, he calls Tiny's every Thursday or so for a sampling of crusted nirvana. Seriously. This is good stuff. But like most good stuff it comes with some caveat emptor that should not be ignored : The Tiny's Taco Pizza is both exemplary and coveted, but the premises of Tiny's Tacos and Pizzeria itself is not for everyone. Unless you're willing to forego its enjoyment, and risk using this exemplem of epicurean mastery as an ordinary 'blunt object' or 'defensive strategem' (and such reduction in stature is unadvisable for such a fine victual), this critic recommends the sometimes punctual and often effective (although some lesser adjectives may apply) home-delivery service, and the enjoyment of your inevitable post-meal immobility where it's most convenient. on your couch.

Next, the French Dip ($13 plus tax) served with beef broth for dipping, choice of side (I chose homemade macaroni salad) and a dill pickle. The French Dip sub had plenty of thinly sliced grilled beef & melted Swiss cheese on a soft toasted sub roll. The homemade macaroni salad had a light mayo base with firm elbow pasta, chopped red peppers, onions and celery. Both the French Dip and macaroni salad were spot on in taste and portion.
