Stopped here for the first time tonight and was definitely impressed. The mussels were great and ample. My dinner companions enjoyed their salmon and shrimp as well. Everything was really flavorful and it was quiet enough to hear yourself talk without being eerily quiet. If you're coming for a concert or a movie in the area, it would be a great place to stop. I try to make it hear every few months for the brunch special which is $35 for unlimited sangrias (there are 4 kinds) mimosas or bloody marys and it also comes with a special tapas menu which is unlimited. I never get it a la carte because the deal is better. I came here most recently for a friend's birthday, there were 4 of us. Service was ok but they are busy and the food is always coming out but the driink ordering can be slower. Since the food is so bangin I will keep going back. We got the empanada, pancakes, french toast, those potato ball jammies, the bread with tomato etc on it, the potato bravas, and so much more and ate basically everything. You should not order more than you can eat and you cannot take any home. We usually order two items per person to start and work our way from there. The calamari is a lil too salty for me but that it my only qualm. Hurry and go before too many find out about it lol. read more

Just back from a $20 unlimited tapas lunch. Perfect meal! I had calamari, mussels, beef empanada, chorizo and carne asada. Everything was great, except for the carne asada, which was merely good. Had both the desserts, loved them both. The first taste of the flan comes as a surprise, because it is so firm and dense. I really liked it, but your mileage may vary. Service was perfect. I ordered the first 4 dishes together. They arrived in a well-paced manner. I was a really happy camper when I left. (At the risk of stating the obvious, be kind to the server. Treat the all-you-can-eat deal as a paperless Groupon, and tip on the undiscounted value of your food. For most people this will be $40 to $50, I imagine.) read more

Best Spanish tapas at ridiculously good prices...Los pimientos and the datiles are exquisite...they are my standbys. The sangria selection is great - rose, white, and classic red. All yummy! This place has never disappointed me. The service is incredible, the food is outstanding, and the prices are great. Some of the tapas are enough for a full meal, and always cooked to perfection. Went here for a bday HH with some friends. Very good service and accomodating. Interior is very nice and intimate. Ordered a bunch of tapas to share:potato's bravas, croquetas de pollo, calamaris aztecas, mussels, allitas de pollo, and albondigas. Everything was very good. And the portions were very big for tapas(more food =happy me). The only thing was felt a little rushed because there were other pple trying to get seats at the bar for HH as well(understandable why pay full price when you can get it at a discount:). So they were just sort of hovering. They also serve brunch which I would love to try one day. Other then the feeling rushed situation I left stuffed and happy. read more

Unlike some people, I really like the small plates trend. After looking at La Malinche's menu, I concluded it was like a Jaleo. Perhaps that was an unfair comparison, because it's made it very hard for me to give La Malinche more than 3 stars, but overall I've been satisfied with both meals I've had at La Malinche. The service has always been good - no issues there - and the location is nice. It's a bit dark, but it's part of the ambiance, and I like the cozier feel. Unfortunately, most of the food just wouldn't compare to Jaleo's if you had it side-by-side - then again, it's cheaper (personally, I'd prefer to spend a little more and be happier). The yuca frita were good - not crispy all the way through, but very soft and mushy on the inside. Different preparation, but they were tasty and the sauce was good. The salads aren't worth your time - if you're trying to be healthy like we were, just skip it. Tiny little salad that wasn't anything special. The brussels sprouts are a better option, but note that they are steamed, not roasted (less crispy but they have good flavor!) The calamari is pretty good - fried well, although the tomatillo sauce isn't the best combination. We love croquetas de pollo, and the ones at La Malinche are ok - you get a nice garlic aioli with them, and they're nice and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. You get 3 for $6. The fajitas are really tasty - specifically the beef ones. I'd definitely get them again. The sangria tasted mostly like wine watered down a bit. Overall, La Malinche is ok - to me, it doesn't have that spark that Jaleo does, but I'd like to try different options to see if maybe I'm just not choosing well. I haven't tried any seafood but the calamari, and I still need to try some of the other options like empanadas, datiles, etc. read more

This place is the BOMB! it's like my second family. I used to live across the street so I went all the time, and the staff is really amazing. Shoutout to Max & Boris, Thomas and Lucas, but everyone else is great too :) Their happy hour is amazing, and their regular menu is even better. The brunch was affordable for $35, also included drinks. The food was great, and easy to share with friends. Easy to find and parking was close by. The two things that could improve are the ability to order food and drinks faster. Also the best drinks two order are the sangria cava and the mimosa in my opinion. I came here for brunch two weekends ago and got the $30 special for unlimited tapas and drinks. For those of you who don't know, they offer unlimited brunch on weekends from 11-2:30. There are two pricing options: $20 for unlimited tapas or $30 for unlimited tapas and drinks. One disclaimer: the entire table must participate in the unlimited brunch, but also choose the same pricing option. I'm sure they have to do this or else people will share their unlimited food/drinks with others who didn't pay for it. No big deal. The tapas are made to order and not buffet style, so someone please tell me how this is not a steal! I ate and drank $80 worth and only paid $30. Crazy. Drinks that come with it are mimosas, several kinds of sangria, bloody Mary's, and beer. You can also get coffee, water, etc. Notable items: pico de gallo, croquetas de pollo, calamares (calamari), mejilonnes (mussels), asparagus, and the bistec mexicano (grilled skirt steak with a fried egg and ranchero sauce). Oh, and flan! They serve unlimited dessert too! Flan and/or churros with a chocolate sauce. The flan was yummy and so were the churros. But the churros were a little too sweet for my taste. holy huge servings dorothy, we're not in LA anymore! the portions here are gargantuan compared to the tiny morsels served in Los Angeles....we ordered 8 "tapas," and being used to jose andrés "bites" thought this would barely cover my boyfriend's normal chick fil-A and papa john's monster appetite...fortunately we had an observant and thoughtful waiter who graciously held our last 2 orders knowing that we would be more than full with just the first 6 dishes we ordered! the service was great and the food was good and hearty. we ordered the toast with manchego and jamon serrano, chicken croquettes, steamed brussel sprouts, jumbo shrimp with garlic butter sauce, bacon-wrapped dates (datiles), and ribeye. we ended up canceling our orders of the mushrooms and patatas bravas bc we were so stuffed. the best dishes were the bacon-wrapped dates and chicken croquettes. i also had the tinta sangria and the cava sangria (a little too sweet and juice-like). la malinche has a lot of good food for the price, which was a very pleasant and unexpected surprise, with a nice atmosphere and great service. read more

We frequent the awesome happy hour regularly enough that the owners and bartender know us when we walk in. The sangria (all four types) are awesome and the food tastes like somebody loves you! This past weekend we decided to do my birthday brunch here and they had no problem accommodating our large party. It was the BEST brunch I've had in DC!! Unlimited sangria, mimosas, draft beer, and bloody Mary's. Plus bottomless tapas and traditional brunch items. Each plate was prepared freshly with the same love and care as on typical days, no walking back and forth in front of buffet items that have been sitting out for hours. Edwin, our bartender buddy ordered for us so we could just enjoy and took care to co tiniest bringing out what seemed to be most popular. After receiving numerous recommendations for La Malinche (some from complete strangers), the Captain and I decided to venture in for brunch - kiddos in tow. For $30 per person, you can order unlimited brunch tapas and drinks (4 types of sangria, mimosas, bloody mary's, and beer). Not interested in drinking? No problem - only $20 per person for unlimited tapas. This is the kind of deal that DC offers and has repeatedly made me regret not living in the district. As you would expect, the dishes are small but what they lack in size they make up for in taste and execution. Pancakes aren't just pancakes, they're blue corn meal pancakes - cooked to order with warm maple syrup. Asparagus was grilled to perfect tenderness, mussels were still plump and juicy from not being overcooked, and the churros were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. And those are only a few of the many tapas we tasted. We went back for dinner a few days later so I can say, without hesitation, that I recommend this restaurant. Unfortunately, we just recently moved from the DTSS area but I can see this becoming a destination spot for that tapas craving that comes around every now and again. read more

We were looking for a quiet neighborhood restaurant and found La Malinche in Yelp under quiet restaurants in Silver Spring, MD. The best thing was the service. However, the raves stop right there. This is no Cafe Ole (Wisconsin Ave., NW)! The restaurant's acoustics are absolutely horrible. We were seated at the quietest table. Unfortunately, at the table next to us was an incredibly noisy couple. We thought that the woman was on a cell phone; that is how loud she was screaming, laughing and snorting. We asked her to tone it down, but that did not happen. Perhaps too much wine??? Presented well, the food was overly salty. Although we asked them to tone down the salt after the incredibly salty spinach tapas, this did not happen. Dishes were presented well but were served atop a bland, unremarkably mayonnaisey aioli. The tapas were mostly cheap deep fried potatoes with a little beef, chicken or cod, hardly distinguishing themselves from each other. The steak tapas was full of salt and fat and was mostly inedible, but I usually do not order steak from Mexican or Salvadorean restaurants for this reason. To expect restauranteurs from El Salvador to be able to make delicate Spanish plates was quite a stretch. If the tapas had been Salvadorean, we would have been much happier, as we adore Salvadorean food with its rich flavors, smells and textures. The after dinner coffee which was exceptionally weak and lacked taste. The $90 bill (including tip) could have been spent at a restaurant that deserves the accolade. read more

This is a fabulous restaurant. I went with a few of my co workers on a Friday evening. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the staff was very welcoming. We asked for suggestions on what to order and were given a thorough overview of the menu with an emphasis on the favorites. We loved the bacon wrapped dates, garlic infused guacamole, patatas Bravas, Gambas a la Cazuela(shrimp), and scallops. I also took a flan to go and it was one of the best I've ever tasted. The food was not the only fantastic part of this restaurant. The drinks were very good too. I had the traditional sangria and the signature martini( infused with pineapple). Both were excellent. Went here with my wife based on the yelp rating/reviews and was not disappointed. Service wad excellent. We both had the tortilla soup-creamy and spiced just right. I had the meatballs and the patatas bravas and she had the salad with candied walnuts and champagne vinaigrette & buey (I can't remember the rest). I haven't had shoulder steak seasoned so well and that tender to date. Highly recommended for date nights and all under $45! Kids might not appreciate the flavors. read more

I would totally believe this place is awesome during happy hour. I went at 3:00, the dead zone hour. Service was nice enough, decor modern. I had the blackened scallops with the corn salsa, delish. The ceviche was tilapia and shrimp. It was not very good. It was necessarily BAD, but I felt it was all the parts of the shrimp that hide in the tail, and it just wasn't bright, light, and flavorful. Really this is closer to 2.5 stars. The food was all OK. Highlights were the scallops that came with a corn salsa and the chicken croquettes. Still, these were not anything I'd be thinking about the next day, or even an hour later. The only thing I'd actually consider going back for is the sangria, which was quite good. The real problem with this place is that the prices seem too high for the quality of the food. For what we paid, we could have gotten much better food at several places in DTSS. I should note that they have a happy hour where at least some of the tapas are cheaper. That's probably worth trying, but I won't make a special effort to get there. The service was decent. This is my go to spot for Happy Hour during the week! The vibe is always mellow with only a few people dining. I always get the $5 Margaritas, although they come in a small glass they are strong and get the job done. The bartenders are friendly and quick to get you another drink.
