I had an incredible meal at Guardado's for Bethesda Restaurant Week. The food was delicious, the drinks were some of the best-priced I've seen around DC, and the whole place was super cute! The Restaurant Week menu was such a great deal. Three tapas and a dessert for $35. Such a steal for the quality and portions. Highly recommend visiting this restaurant for restaurant week if you're looking for a great meal at a great price. For my tapas, I got the gambas al ajillo, seafood ceviche, and pinchitos. Everything was fantastic. The shrimp were garlicky and cooked perfectly! The ceviche was also super yummy! The only thing that would have made the ceviche better is if they served chips with it. It needed a little crunch for contrast. The mango mojito was a standout. It had the freshest mango I've had in months. I was embarrassingly eating the pieces at the bottom of my glass after finishing my drink. Now I need to figure out where they're getting mangoes this good in the middle of winter. Service was great but our waiter was really busy so there were a few times we had to wait a bit for him. He was super nice though so it wasn't a big deal. Also the restaurant had live music which was such a nice touch! Overall this was an amazing experience and I'd absolutely come back. Great food, fantastic drinks, and unbeatable prices. If you're in Bethesda you have to check it out.

Guardado's Restaurant is a good restaurant for modest Latino options. They have a limited menu of a variety of fish, chicken and two red meat items in a variety of dish platings. These come in appetizers and entrees. Their entrees are sized like appetizers. The food quality is good. Ok cuts of vegetables and proteins. Food is flavored ok without being too under or over flavored. Portion size is small. It's a nice place to relax and enjoy a light plate. The service from the waitstaff is excellent. Very friendly, polite and knowledgeable. I recommend Guardado's Restaurant. It's quaint. Maybe a nice afternoon date place.

Tortilla española and croquetas de jamón

We were in the area and decided to check it out. The 'croquetas de jamón' were burnt and the 'tortilla española' was flat and extremely greasy. If a Spanish restaurant cannot make those two iconic food items well, that was our signal to leave.

A group of us came to Guardado's for a friend's birthday. TBH, after checking out the menu and some of the other reviews, I wasn't too excited for the food, but you never know until you try. When I drove up, I noticed that it was a pretty small spot. Luckily, there was plenty of parking opportunities on the street, and a parking garage right across the street. My friend had a reservation, so we were seated right away. Once I walked in, I noticed how small the restaurant was. The table that we sat at was a bit tight, but it worked for us. After reviewing the menu, we decided to order a few plates and share. I opted for the gambas al ajillo, croquetas, pinchitos, plantains with cheese and beef, and papas fritas. I've been to a few other tapas spots in the Moco area, so I was curious to see how their food compared. Overall, the shrimp was good, and the garlic oil was perfect for dipping with their bread. The pinchitos were a delicious sausage over mashed potatoes. I think this was my favorite. The papas fritas were okay. I feel like it was definetly lacking flavor. The plantains with beef was good, but once again it was missing something. I've realized that overall I am just not a fan of croquetas, so I can't really give a fair review. We also ordered drinks. I opted for the mojito, which I sent back and replaced with a mango margarita. The margarita was a better choice. We then ordered some dessert. My sister and I shared the tres leches with the birthday girl. It was a bit dry and not the best. Someone ordered the flan, which was pretty good, and a chocolate fudge cake, which was a bit too much chocolate even for me. I give 2 stars because the service was ok, and I think they have a variety of options. However, I probably won't be returning.

Shrimp Quesadilla (comes with 4 wedges)

We just dined here for the first time and my parents have already declared it a new favorite. My favorites: + Gambas Al Ajillo ($13.95) - This classic sauteed shrimp dish was so good we even ordered a second round and used the bread to mop up all the olive oil in the pan. + Shrimp Quesadilla ($14.25) - I love a shrimp quesadilla but these surpassed expectations--there was plenty of shrimp and the tomatoes added a nice savoriness. + Plain Plantain ($4.50) - One of the best plantains I've had in recent memory and nice and caramelized on some of the edges. We also enjoyed: + Calamares Fritos ($12.25) + Pulpo A La Gallega ($12.50) - The octopus was so tender! + Croquetas ($9.50) - These were just okay and not super flavorful. + Paella Negra ($44.95) - We prefer our paella rice to be cooked through instead of al dente and was pleased to find it nice and soft. I thought the tilapia was a little fishy but overall we enjoyed it! Despite slight apprehension when looking through the pictures prior to our visit, we were very impressed and will definitely be returning!

Seafood Paella

Delicious reasonably priced tapas and paella. We only ate about half of it between the two of us. Good service, quaint and cozy interior. Would recommend to anyone wanting tapas or paella.

A little crowded on the seating, but food was great and evenly spaced out so we wouldn't get overwhelmed with everything coming at once. We liked the chorizo and seafood dishes the best. The steak and pork loin were a little dry.

Happy hour choices

i had a 3 star meal here in 2017. This time was better. I had the mushrooms, a chicken tapas, calamari, and the spinach salad. All the dishes were well executed, with lots of tasty elements. I also enjoyed a margarita. The only miss was I requested no salt on the rim, and received a heavily salted rim. So other than wiping salt off my glass, my meal was spot on.

I had originally made a 6:30 p.m. reservation for a Saturday, but she ended up running late so I called at 6:30 to push it to 7:00. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate the last-minute change, which I really appreciated. There are picnic tables out front, but we chose to sit inside. I ordered a variety of tapas including the octopus, cod fritters, crispy chicken wings, beef empanadas, and she ordered the seafood paella and a house salad. My friend absolutely loved the paella. My personal favorites were the chicken wings and the octopus; both were flavorful and well-prepared. Service was friendly, and our server checked in on us frequently, though there were a few hiccups. My chicken wings were initially forgotten, I was given another table's check, and I was accidentally charged twice for the wings. I called the next day, and Wendall, the general manager, promptly handled the refund, which I appreciated. Despite a few minor oversights, we had an enjoyable experience overall. The staff was especially kind. My friend asked a couple of team members to take photos for us, and they were more than happy to help, which added a nice personal touch to the evening.

We ordered a bottle of the Cava, and four small plates, which was plenty of food. The mussels, labneh and Patatas bravas were all very generous portions. The decor is perfect and I love that they've added plants to cover the staircase. Drinks were delicious and the food came out quickly. Our water glasses were rarely empty. Service was kind. Food wise if I were to stack rank I would say the hummus is the best of what we ordered. The pita bread is thick and garlicky and oily and massive. The croquettes would be at the bottom of my list simply because they're dissimilar from any I've had before and a little bit underwhelming. The tuna was fresh but it's a small dish and not much to write home about. The lamb skewers have a subtle kick to them and they're pretty substantial. I'll definitely be back to try more! Highly recommend on a warm summer day as you're covered by the canopy above, if you're looking for a rooftop vibe.

They offer an all-you-can-eat dinner menu (plus brunch), and every single thing we tried was delicious. We were a party of two and definitely overstuffed ourselves trying as much as we could Honestly, I think 3-4 people would be the perfect group size so you can share everything and sample more dishes comfortably. The food came out quickly, tapas-style, which made the whole experience even better. Great price for the amount and quality of food, excellent service, and such a fun ambiance. The decor was also super cute. I really liked that they had a large disability ramp as well.

When we walked in, we thought it was gonna be packed because there were no reservations on OpenTable however they were able to see us right away. A very nice touch to add a stem of Rose for the women. I would say that I gave it a lower star rating not because the food was bad. It was actually delicious, but probably the experience itself. The restaurant felt chaotic, and even though all the tables were not completely packed of course there were flowers everywhere people gathering with grandmother's mother's children, etc We were seated in a two people table and all the top past dishes started to pile up very quickly. Instead of monitoring, the progress of the finished dishes and removing those dishes due to space constraint, the dishes came from the kitchen, almost on top of one another, and at one point I had to hold a dish in my hand in order to make space to put a dish on top of another flatbread pan/dish, making things super chaotic. Also dishes had to be put on top of the menu because in order to order additional food, you need to leave at least one copy of the menu at the table. Overall, again the flavors and taste were good, though I might have had similar dishes from other places, and my partner commented that some of it is actually very close to the Capital One landing at DCA. I would just say that it was more due to the chaos and just the way that all the dishes piled up on top of us we felt like we were we had to eat super quickly so that we could stack dishes ourselves and create room at the table. Also, when serving the dishes were not kept level and basically was slide to the side of the dish, making presentation off

Hot toddy - waiter recommended, it's hot and has honey lemon taste like a tea but the alcohol is also a bit strong 2/5 Pineapple margarita - very very strong almost like straight alcohol lol 1/5 Red sangria - super well balanced and fruity! Very yummy 4/5 White sangria - a little bit sharper alcohol flavor and less well balanced but still good 3/5 Embutido Combo - Jamon Serrano, Salchichon de Vic, Chorizo Iberico - I'm not sure which is which so going by the picture left to right. A little spicy, overall good quality but I do think they put a bit too much oil which made it have an extra oil taste 2.5/5 Middle - like prosciutto this is the best one! Not dry at all in any area and not too salty 3.75/5 Right - least favorite but it is still good overall. Taste a little less yummy than the one on the right even though the one on the right is too oily 2/5 Queso Mahon - rich and cheesy. Not too sticky and very soft. I like the little fruit it comes with too 3/5 Seared scallop - usually squid in rice I feel like is just color but this one was super savory and delicious with a unique taste too that I'm thinking must be from the ink! It's made super well and the crispy sear on the scallop adds so much flavor but also the scallop was not overcooked at all, super bouncy and tender. 4.5/5 Spanish risotto - very moist and yummy! Even though it's just vegetables it's made well 3.75/5 Crispy pork belly - falls apart and very tender. Not dry at all! Unfortunately too salty though. Also very heavy. Meat too salty but veggies it came with like potato that soaks up the flavor was like inedible too salty 2/5 Seafood paella - I think it came out a bit faster than 40 minutes but I didn't keep track. Large serving size! Wish there was more seafood but lots of rice! Very moist and flavorful rice, seafood flavor comes through too! Wish they cooked it longer though since bottom is not crispy at all. Shrimp is overcooked unfortunately but individually seasoned. All the squids and octopus don't have much flavor but cooked well and not chewy at all. Mussels were good too but had some weird webbing on some pieces that made me not want to eat it and size is a bit small. Needs more seafood to balance the rice amount 4.25/5 Crimini mushroom - weird with the poached egg especially since there's a bunch of mushroom liquid below that I think would mix weirdly together. But ignoring that, the mushrooms themselves were very flavorful and actually taste really great with paella! 3.75/5 Basque cheesecake - very heavy and dense. Jam is not too sweet which is nice 1.5/5 Churros - very airy and light inside! The fried part is more than double the inside though so wish that was a little less thick so it can be a little less oily but still overall light. Came very warm and the dipping sauces were very liquidy. Chocolate is on the darker side which is a nice match 3/5

After having a full meal with cocktails, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee (about $70 per person), I concluded that Atxondo will be a definite future destination for Happy Hour and light bites, but that my full meal dining dollars will be spent elsewhere. The Patatas Bravas (Fingerling Potatoes) were outstanding, with their two tasty sauces and rich, crispy flavor and texture. The Hibiscus Margarita with its salt and tajín rim was good enough to warrant a second one... but the Sangria was lackluster due to the complete absence of cut-up fresh fruit in my glass. The "Crispy Duck Breast" is no longer served whole, but sliced on a bed of sauteed kale... and, sadly, seemed to be only a shadow of its former self. The Lamb Meatballs suffered from being mushy (a coarser grind would have made a world of difference in the texture) and lacked that meaty exuberance one treasures in any kind of meatball. My serving of Basque Cheesecake was almost comically tiny (at $9 per serving, perhaps not so funny after all). But my cup of Americano came out of the espresso machine strapping strong and piping hot, with a gorgeous head of natural crema from the oil of the coffee beans. So I will definitely return for a future Happy Hour to devour the outstanding Patatas Bravas and sip the good Margaritas, and to try the bargain Manchego Burger and other Happy Hour bites. For serious dining, Atxondo falls short of the mark... but for drinks and bar food, Atxondo turns out to be a real neighborhood gem. .
