    Artichoke salad
    Amanda D.

La Focaccia marries traditional NJ Italian food with modern ambiance. Their food reminds me of Italian restaurants I would go to as a kid and I was missing the expected white table cloth and single carnation on the table. The restaurant accommodated both large and small parties as well as parties with children. The menu is loaded with great sounding dishes. I was excited to try everything. Serving old school dishes like rabbit and calves liver to more modern ones like branzino and salmon. The service was good. My water class was never empty and they checked before opening any liquor we bought. To each their own but I wasn't impressed by the food. The best thing we ate was the grilled octopus appetizer. The artichoke salad was a disappointment. I actually thought it was the Brussels sprouts salad brought to me by mistake because I've never seen raw artichoke that looks or tastes the way it did. Pass on that. The entrees were good. My husband got the Branzino for $38 and was not impressed. My lamb was ok and expensive. The salmon looked like something you would get at a wedding. The kids chicken finger and fries were burnt. For dessert we got the Sundae and that was actually impressive and fun. I hope that if you go you order different things and are more impressed with their food. Everyone has an off night. But as a mom with

Stopped by for family celebration dinner on their busy Saturday night. Dinner/ service was superb! Salad was fresh and light. The first star dish...Meatball was so tender and full of flavor, served in one of the best marinara sauces. Family favorite dish was the Housemade Black Spaghettini! Flavor, texture, temperature, all A+. It was truly a five star meal except for one last dessert dish that was actually terrible. Mango sorbet was so amazing and fully enjoyed... chocolate lava cake was pretty bad. It lacked chocolate flavor and texture was all wrong. It was gummy & tasted like a frozen store bought cake that was microwaved.... don't get this! We didn't let this ruin our otherwise fantastic family dinner where we were all happy with our meal and service was timely, attentive, and friendly. We will be back!!

    Butternut squash soup

Had a lovely early Sunday evening dinner that everyone enjoyed. I loved the butternut squash soup to start on a cold night, it was warm but not heavy. My chicken was excellent as well so many mushrooms -which I love. The Cacio e Pepe special was fine but a little bland, it could have had more pepper and cheese. The kids loved the meatballs and they were accommodating with bringing out the favorite brownie sundae to the great joy of my niece. They also allow you to bring your own wine (or maybe it's byo not sure as I don't live here) which was nice to open up something special.

This is supposedly 35% capacity? In what world?!

This restaurant is located in the lobby of a nice hotel and it was a surprisingly large space. I had indicated in the reservation that the dinner was for a birthday, and they kindly gave our group special menus with happy birthday at the top, which was a nice touch. We were given complimentary focaccia and olives to start off the meal, which they refilled halfway through. We ordered crabcake and calamari for the table which were both good. For my entree, I ordered the creste di gallo whch was just alright and I probably would not order it again. To end the meal, we were given limoncello shots and a dessert with a candle and happy birthday written in Italian!

We went on a Sunday at 1:30 thinking we could order from the lunch menu but they only offered the brunch menu which was very limited. I ordered the salmon entree which I enjoyed but most of our group got burgers or the frittata (the frittatas were so bad that they didn't charge us for them). Burgers were okay but with American cheese only and it was practically burned into the burger. We tried to order bread for the table but they don't offer bread for brunch which is crazy. We got the basket of mini danishes and croissants which were like dessert before the meal which was annoying. The drinks menu was very large and $$$ but I didn't drink. The table shared a few desserts but I didn't taste. The decaf coffee was very good. I would go if someone else is paying. Not worth the money.

So I walk in around 3:30 one afternoon, already hesitant after the last less than cordial treatment last time I went and there they are: the mother-daughter leadership team - but they're chowing down at the counter. Unusual. Felt like walking in on your parents. Now let me say: I'd always liked them - one grew up in my hometown Little Silver; the other's sister has a Pasteria in Red Bank. I've written stellar reviews of this place here on Yelp - in the past. Eli Manning story. Post Sandy romanticized tale. Their remodeling. An interview about their Italian family roots in the restaurant business. I'd been coming here twenty or more years. Live up the street. it's easy. Convenient. Decent food. So I walk in through the unlocked door, stumbled upon their eating and well there wasn't any shouting or yelling, there was an attitude as if I was rude for walking in. Now that's no reason for you the neophyte to write off going to this joint. It's the least expensive snd fancy of Summit Italian Restaurants, the food's fine. And hey if the leave the door unlocked at mid-day break, still don't update their webpage or put a sign on the door and you accidentally walk in, I'm sure you'll survive the malocchio. But me? I had more invested over twenty years. I don't expect to 86'd like some rude interloper. La Pastaria checks all the boxes for the residents of Summit and the restaurant was packed with diners of all ages when my dining companion and I stopped in for dinner on a recent Saturday night. The overall ambiance is what one would expect from a casual BYOB -- slightly better than average decor; adequate but not overly attentive service; and freshly-made and tasty Italian favorites at reasonable prices. It's obvious that the chef takes pride making meals that present well and taste great. The dinner menu features a variety of Italian favorites including pastas, chicken, and shrimp dishes, which offers enough variety to appeal to everyone (including those with dietary restrictions like gluten or dairy intolerance). My dining companion and I started off our meal by splitting the Bruschetta Di Pomodoro ($13), comprised of three pieces of pane toscano topped with freshly-diced tomato and red onion. I opted for the Chicken Savoy ($26), with a generous portion of white-meat chicken sautéed with garlic, oil, balsamic vinegar, and Italian spices, and served along with side of pasta and tomato sauce. My dining companion ordered the Chicken Milanese ($26), a generous portion of breaded chicken atop a bed of arugula, fresh tomato salad, red onions, garlic, basil, and olive oil, and (unlike Milanese dishes at many other Italian restaurants) served with a side of pasta and tomato sauce. Both of us really enjoyed the freshness and flavors of our meals. We'll definitely be back. PRO TIP: La Pastaria doesn't have a private parking lot, but there is plenty of on-street parking and parking in the Summit municipal parking lots off Springfield Avenue. Bring change or use the ParkMobile app for the meters ($1 per hour) Monday through Saturday from 8am til 6PM; all street meters are free Monday through Saturday after 6pm and all day on Sunday.

While both were great, the meatballs were the clear winner, served hot in a small cast iron skillet. Moving to the main course, the pasta ragu was another hit.
