It was a beautiful, cool morning and we chose a table outside, not under an umbrella, but there were several other table with umbrella covers. There are two outdoor dining areas, one is slightly below street level, right in front of the cafe, the other is up a few steps at street level with a view of the ocean. We chose the upper level. There is also seating inside.
One waiter was working the entire area. We had stopped in the cafe first to be sure we could choose any seat we wanted (we could) and he came by quickly with menus. The menu has a variety of choices from fruit bowl to full on, hungry man breakfast. I started with a pot of tea and ordered the English breakfast (not to be confused with the FULL English breakfast which is larger). I ordered mine with scrambled eggs, but I think they are 'pre-packaged egg scramblers', not freshly scrambled eggs, so you may want to go with fried or poached. There was not a lot of taste to these.
The menu states the meal comes with a croissant, however, it came with a basket of french bread, butter and jams (current and prune, which were both tasty). I realized later 'croissant' in Nice apparently means baguette, as we saw this a few times. But the bread was wonderful so it was no loss. The tea was good and I got 3 cups from the pot. The meal also comes with toast, which is served dry and is not very appetizing. Especially after the lovely french bread. Seems to be there just to fill up the plate, or maybe to feed the pigeons.
We arrived early enough that there was little traffic on the road and it was an enjoyable meal overlooking the ocean. Later in the day, as the traffic got busy, sitting on the lower level would be much nicer. Something to keep in mind if you stop later in the day.
All in all it was a pleasant experience. The waiter was quick and attentive. His English was good, the food was OK, chairs were comfortable and there is a nice view. The price came to €39.90 for two - about the same cost as the hotel charges. read more
