Out and about on Saturday and needed to go to Aldis. Did some shopping and was a little hungry. In the same shopping center is La Costilla. Decided to take a chance. Wish I hadn't. First off I ordered 2 tacos. There was so much liquid in the taco meat it hadn't flavor. The flour tortilla was so thick that's what I mostly tasted. I placed a to go order when I first arrived. If i had known how things tasted, I might not have. I ordered tacos and a burrito for Hubby. I should have looked. When I got home they had made quesadillas. And not good ones. Thank goodness Hubby knows how to doctor his food up. Also I ordered a Coors light. They don't have it. My choice was bud light. I'd rather jump off a cliff. All in all i won't be going back. Very inconsistent!! I have been here 3x & every time was a very different experience. The 1st it was great because I only got drinks& laughed when the bartender. (20 mins from closing) The second was also good , good drinks & the food was ok. Birria was better after I asked them to be fried hard. The other tacos tortillas don't come cooked. ( around 3pm) This 3rd time just told me I was never coming back! Service is extremely slow & it's not packed in here. I are at the La Costilla Grill express at the food court in Fiesta Plaza. It was very good. If you are an English only speaker like me you will definitely be a minority, but if you don't mind stepping out of your comfort zone a bit there are some great shops and dining opportunities at Plaza Fiesta. The food court here has 5 major restaurants a d there are a couple others scattered through the shopping area. Plus smaller food stalls. Like taking an exotic vacation for lunch. I got tacos asada, always a safe bet. I got three amazing street tacos and beans. With a drink under $20. There are lots of choices here so you can come back and try another next time. Why not 5 stars? Well it is good, but not over the top. A good value, but not amazing. It is still street tacos ona paper plate you eat in a common food court. A nice lunch but not fancy. Honestly I saw a post on social media and it made me curious. It had a really good Tuesday special so I decided to give it a shot. They have them birria tacos which are two for 10 with a side. And then I have the margarita specials as well. Of course I tried that birria taco, this is why I'm here lol. It's in a strip mall so you come in and you welcome through the door and there's a bar plenty of tequila if you're into that. They have music playing in the background and everything is pretty spacious. I can see it immediately, what I went to the bar and I can help immediately since let's head out so so far the customer service has been pretty good. You look at chips and salsa, and I will give you a couple different types of salsa for the chips. The chips seem pretty hot fresh. I got some french fries with some cheese dip as well. The cheese was good it wasn't like it they left that long sitting out, although it was much more greasy than desired. You can see the grease sitting on the stop of the bowl, which made it kinda watery (instead of a actual cheese sauce). The Taco's were okay. I kind of expected them to be the type of birria tacos that I was used to, these seemed like regular tacos with the beef inside. What I was expecting was tacos cooked in the consume so they have that redish orangish tint to them, and served with a warm cup or bowl of the consume. These were basically like regular shells with a spoonful of the birria meat. The meat is supposed to be marinated and then the taco is cooked on both sides. Because if you do a Google search, that is pretty much what you will find, not just regular flour tortillas. Maybe that was my expectation, but for 10 dollars they were just normal tacos. This Mexican restaurant is in the back of the Crossroads Village plaza. The plaza is large enough to not have to worry about parking. Despite the small amount of walking space in front of the store they were able to fit four full-sized patio tables there, each with a large umbrella. I walked in and placed a takeout order for a chicken taco, a grilled shrimp taco, and a fried shrimp taco, all on flour tortillas. It was thirty minutes later when I got my order. I spent some of that time looking around. Around the dining area is black leather, dark wood, and a black floor, against a light colored wall. It isn't as large as a full-sized restaurant's dining space but it can definitely seat a few dozen guests; not including the ten or so barstools. In one corner are slot machines and barrel tables to stand at. The section of stand alone tables are pushed together as one in a way that makes me think these tables weren't apart of the original setup. Maybe they were added once the restaurant started to get more business. I take it the owners are Catholic, as there's a cross hanging over the bar and an altar for Our Lady of Guadalupe in the dining area. Every employee I met is Latin and seem to all speak Spanish. There's a male and female bathroom. The women's is small and clean. There are two stalls (one large handicapped) and a single glittering sink on a weathered wood vanity. I now want a glittery sink. I sat at the bar to wait for my food and the bartender almost immediately brought me a menu and promised to be with me in a moment. I wasn't having a drink but that's some quick courteous service. After thirty minutes of waiting and confirming my order with two people my food came out. I guess the hostess heard "fried fish" instead of "fried shrimp". The chicken and shrimp tacos were good; not spectacular, or really anything special. The flour tortillas and lack of sauce made it a dry meal. I did take a bite of the fish taco but fish on a taco just isn't my thing. There was a bowl of something I didn't order that looked like gumbo. I wasn't given utensils (or napkins) so I couldn't dig through it to see what was in it. I pulled up the online menu to figure out what was in the bowl. Turns out there's a three-tacos meal on the menu that comes with charro beans, which is similar to a gumbo. Like the tacos' flavor, the aroma was ok but didn't make my mouth water. I didn't eat it. Complimentary chips and salsas got the meal started off right, though the chips looked like they came from the bottom of a bag. The next basket consisted of pristine whole chips. Oh well. We got the parrillada regia for two people ($44.95) to share. It's a beast, with 32 ounces [900 grams] of your choice of meat. The ribeye was more like well done instead of the requested medium rare and was salty. It's probably partly because the meat was cut up and continued to cook on the cast iron pan. There were also some cheesy hot dogs in the dish there too. But the homemade tortillas and fresh guacamole were fantastic. It didn't hurt that the tortillas came in adorable sombrero-shaped containers. The charro beans were more like a soup that was somewhat spicy but pretty good. Our waitress was a sweetheart. Besides being very nice, she came by at regular intervals and was able to answer several questions about the menu. Parking was a cinch in the Crossroads Village shopping center parking lot. I was craving some Mexican food along with a margarita recently and decided to pop in and give La Costilla a try. Right off the bat, I wasn't too keen on the service because when I entered the restaurant and said hello to the greeter in the front, she ignored me. Not a great first impression. They are spacing diners out and use every other table to seat people. The wait staff also wore masks throughout service. My waitress did just enough to be decent, nothing above and beyond from her. She also wasn't too knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered a taco plate that came with three tacos of my choice along with rice. I got two shrimp and one fish taco. They were a bit underwhelming, with the fish being a bit too salty. The Mexican rice was the highlight of my meal unfortunately. I also ordered a margarona. It was okay, the margarita portion of it was a bit weak. I wasn't blown away from my experience here. They have decent rice but that seems to be my only highlight. read more

You can find La Costilla Grill at 3979 Buford Hwy St 109, Atlanta, GA 30345 - this is a strip mall that also used to be the home of Havana Grill (it's recently either closed or changed names). The shopping center is behind and slightly north of the Buford Hwy Aldi slightly north of the Clairment intersection. There's tons of parking but there are also several restaurants in this center so be prepared to walk a bit. I'm a bit hesitant to review La Costilla Grill as I consider it a hidden gem - it's also one of the finest Mexican restaurants we've come across in our Buford Highway Restaurant Crawl featuring great food and awesome drinks - this became a favorite after nearby visits due to the alcohol (most of the near-area restaurants serve no alcohol or only beer). My hesitation is rather selfish - I don't want it to become so popular that it's hard to get a seat - I've now had this food about a dozen times and it's been very consistent. During sporting events the place is already packed, but fortunately there's a small patio that is usually open so we gringos can still be seated and served during busy nights. This restaurant is extremely popular among local Latinos for good reason - there's a full bar, the prices are reasonable and the quality of the food is way above average. The restaurant I think is more of a sports bar than a restaurant so expect a dark dining room, lots of stuff on the TVs and blaring music (another reason to sit outside if it's not too hot). The only negative is that the food delivery is a bit slow so be prepared to enjoy your time here. The menu is extensive - let's start with the drinks: Margarita - I thought their mix and alcohol ratio quite good. The frozen is surprisingly good and strong and at $5 quite the bargain. Caipirinha - this fresh lemon drink is very tart and quite good Michelada - this is an amazing drink - similar to a Bloody Mary only made with beer so it has an effervescence and lightness you don't receive from a bloody. This is a huge drink served in a styrofoam cup covered in chunks of cucumber and seasoned salt - there's also a fruit-roll-up stick stuck in there for good measure. Pina Colada - typical recipe but if you want something special have it served in a pineapple For food, our server Carelis recommended any of the beef items (Castilla are beef short-ribs, a bit like Korean Galbi) but especially the Parrilladas. The chips served here are thick corn tortilla - they also come with a trio of salsas, all are quite good but I love the green - something like an avocado-and-jalapeno puree. It's cool and creamy. The cheese sauce was your typical melted Mex cheese but the quac was quite good. They also brought out a special "hot" salsa when they understood we liked heat - this was served in a stone vessel. Tacos - these are simple and traditional bits of meat and veg served doubled-up in corn tortillas - quite authentic. I thought the meat slightly dry but that's typical. Taquito Plate - Paul F thought this quite good and mentioned that they were hard to find. Chicken Quesadilla - Laura C said this was quite good and filling. Ribeye Steak - my friend John F ordered this and said it was quite good but to beware of the sizzling plate - the food continues to cook so you should order it one temperature down (if you like medium, order medium-rare). Parrilladas - to me this is the star of their menu - outside skirt steak grilled with salchicha Nortena, onions and jalapenos primos. Comes with beans, quac and tortillas. These bits of meat are delicious and quite filling. The service here is quite good - most recently I hit it for Cinco de Mayo and while most of the TexMex places were packed there was still seating here. Waste of money and horrible service!! Well, I found my first (hopefully only) one star restaurant on Buford Highway. Dined in for a celebratory "end of semester" dinner with a close friend and found ourselves with not only a sour attitude server, but overly spiced (inedible) enchiladas, and cold chips. The premixed frozen margaritas were nice, and the atmosphere very fun; all came crashing down when our server was constantly no where to be found, and who's attitude screamed, "I don't want to be here." When we found ourselves with overly spiced enchiladas the server questioned us why, and told us we are wrong, and they were not overly spiced. Excuse me??? I asked if they could be made again with less spice and he said no: "What do you want? Free drinks okay?" That's what he asked. I ended up just eating the beans and rice; the chips and salsa were good (aside from the chips bring cold). I left hungry, disappointed, and actually offended by the server's remarks. I normally have a very good time at La Costilla. I've come here many times. But today was the absolute worst experience ever. I understand it can get hectic on Tuesdays, however today it was mild. That being said, I received the absolute WORST service at this establishment tonight. Our server sucked and has no business being a server. We sat down and waited 15 minutes just to be asked if we wanted anything to drink, to then wait another 15 minutes just for water. Then after putting our order for food and drinks waited ANOTHER half hour to receive nothing and watch as other tables that came after us were served food and drink. We left before our food even came, as. I will not stand for being treated as such at a restaurant. La Costilla Grill is a Mexican grill and steakhouse that opened early 2013 in the Crossroads Village shopping center near the corner of Buford Highway and Clairmont Road. This is the same shopping center that houses Havana Restaurant and Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit, next to Aldi. If you're looking for hearty, affordable steaks, this is the place for you. La Costilla sells T-bones, rib eyes, outside skirt steak, and costilla (beef short ribs), all sized at approximately 14 ounces, for only $14.95 each. It's a great value. The restaurant also doubles as a sports bar. There are several large flat panel displays around the bar as well as an HD projection screen which faces the entire dining room. UFC fight viewing parties are held here. The restaurant is new, spacious, and clean. The atmosphere is casual. Manager Ricardo and server Diana are friendly. This isn't your typical Mexican restaurant. It's meat-oriented. Aside from the aforementioned steaks, other menu specialties include chicken wings, BBQ ribs, and alambre (grilled beef topped with bacon and various vegetables). There's a limited selection of tacos (steak, pork, chicken), flautas (taquitos or rolled tacos), and sandwiches. There are lunch specials and everything is reasonably priced. For example, there's an $8.99 taco special at lunch which includes three tacos and frijoles charros (cowboy beans or Mexican bean stew). On Saturday and Sunday, they offer $9.95 menudo soup made with beef tripe (stomach). There are five different types of salsa and they are, for the most part, legitimately spicy. The pico de gallo contains freshly chopped jalapeno. It brings the heat. The dark red-brown mole sauces have an exceptionally smoky flavor. One of the green salsas is served in a coarsely textured stone pestel. It's probably my favorite of the salsas, packed with plenty of finely minced coriander. Items I've tried include: Chicken wings - BBQ flavor Tacos - outside skirt steak, chicken Burrito - steak, *not on the menu* Costilla - beef short ribs Frijoles charros - Mexican pinto bean stew Portion sizes are generous, particularly with the steaks and burritos. The burritos ($9.99 each) are absolutely mammoth. They put Moe's/Chipotle's Mission-style burritos to shame. Good luck finishing a burrito in one sitting (+ chips and salsa). I roughly estimate La Costilla's burrito to be at least a foot long and upwards of four inches wide and 2.5 to 3 inches tall. It's packed with the same outside skirt steak used in the tacos along with rice, beans, chopped red and green bell pepper, and it's topped with a load of melted white cheese. Heavy, filling stuff. I'm not sure why the burritos aren't on the menu. If you want one, just ask. The BBQ wings are OK. They are slathered in a somewhat thick BBQ sauce and are messy to eat. The wings aren't the meatiest and a little crispy. The sauce is overpowering. The tacos are good. They are served simple in single-layer corn tortillas with meat and a bit of guacamole. I like the skirt steak. They give you an adequate amount of meat and it's got good flavor. The chicken isn't bad either. The costilla is where it's at. If you've ever had Korean galbi, costilla is the same thing: beef short ribs. At La Costilla, three strips of short ribs come with each order. The cuts are thicker than the Korean version. There's a whole lot more meat. It's also a little bit tougher, but still quite good, especially for the price. The short ribs are served still popping and sizzling on a cast iron skillet. Watch out because it's hot. Not only do you get ribs, but the meat is accompanied with more meat: a bacon-wrapped jalapeno and a melted cheese-covered split sausage. Amazing. Oh, and half an onion, a bowl of frijoles charros, a plate of guac, and fresh tortillas too. It is *a lot* of food. Come hungry. The short ribs taste great and aren't overly greasy. The bacon-wrapped jalapeno is, not surprisingly, spicy. The bacon, fatty. The sausage is salty. I like the frijoles charros. The stew comes with plenty of pinto beans and bits of sausage and ham. It's meaty, tasty, and hits the spot. In general, I'd steer towards the steaks or ribs at La Costilla because that is the specialty. The food can take a while to come out from the kitchen. Other than that, service is fine. Jars of water are placed at the table for immediate self-serve refills. The space works well for groups. read more

Mama mia, the portion is huge. The burrito was bigger than my forearm but let me rewind. Staff was accommodating in letting me be the only one seated in the patio. My waitress brought out chips with 3 kinds of salsa, ranging from delicious to spicy (yum). The burrito with skirt steak is massive and I expected much meat with every bite. I was slightly disappointed but what meat I got was aromatic and delicious. I can smell the grill on the meat. The rice is fluffy as I like it. I poured the rest of my spicy salsa on it and got a nice kick out of it. The cheese is a welcomed addition, but probably not necessary (given the fact that burrito probably fulfilled the caloric intake for 3 meals aka a day). Went here with the bf and his crew. We called ahead and made reservations for the dozen or so of us so a table was reserved. The space was cramped as they squeezed tables together along the walkway, but hey, they were able to accommodate us. The bf, and friend, and I shared the parrillada regia (regia grill). It was the perfect portion size for us since we munched our hearts out on the chips and got full. Oops. We were hungry okay. The order came with soup. It was mostly of beans with some ham and other items. I sampled a tid bit of it, but didn't care for it much. The two boys however cleaned their bowls so it was to their liking apparently. The actual dish itself wasn't huge as the bf over hyped it (saying how two/three guys couldn't finish it). It had a lot of meat for sure though. Included in the dish were peppers stuffed with cheese. Food was awful. Child's chicken tenders were very over cooked. My steak taco salad was either microwaved or very poorly cooked and not fresh. After paying and expressing my concern the waitress did not offer an apology or discount but to box up my inedible meal and then put me on the phone with the business owner who immediately accused me of being out of line and told me he was going to call the police because I didn't pay, which I already had. He told me my food was not over cooked. He wasn't even on property but felt the best way to handle the situation was to yell and threaten the authorities on a dissatisfied family. La Costilla is a Mexican steakhouse located at the intersection of Buford Highway and Clairmont Rd. I've visited twice and thought both times it was pretty good. I'll admit it's not my favorite Mexican in town, but does seem pretty authentic and way less "Tex-Mex" than we typically get here in Atlanta. For example, there is no combo menu; don't come here looking for two tacos, rice and beans for $8.99. This is a more complex menu and more focused on traditional preparations and ingredients. I usually go for the tacos. They can be ordered a la carte or three for $10.99; this combo also comes with a side of charro beans. The chicken, shrimp and steak are all delicious - served simply with just guac on chewy corn tortillas. The charros beans are cooked with pork. It's not denoted on the menu so worth pointing out for the non-pork eaters! Don't worry, though, because you can also order refried beans or black beans, or any other side dish instead. The margaritas are just OK here. I'm not much of a fan. I impulsively ordered a pina colada and was delighted when they asked if I wanted it in a cored pineapple - obviously YES. At about $14 it's expensive but portion is HUGE (filled all the way to the top) and they just look so fun! read more

We went on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty, but then again, it was very very cold outside. I consider the place average, a bit overpriced and overall just ok. It's big, it's clean and staff is relatively attentive but flavor wise I feel I have had better, it was a bit bland. read more
