LCO is an elite happy hour bar in that it is actually happy. At 5:30 on Friday, you need noise. You need motion, colorful little paper flags, music and something festive to step into, to transition from work into weekend mode. And you may not know it, but you probably also need guacamole arranged in a flower shape accompanied by an Aguachile Gimlet. Before you crack the menu, La Contenta Oeste delivers festive vibes, with a staff who goes out of their way to be welcoming and super accommodating (even of the under 2-year-old crowd). And, once you do crack the menu, yes--the cocktails are excellent, as is the food. The restaurant was busy and LOUD and HOT, but I was fortunate that they were able to accommodate our table of 8 in a nice booth. We shared their guac and then all ordered a variety of entrees. I had the steak tacos, which initially didn't sound filling enough because they came as 2 mini-ish tacos. It ended up being enough and the guac dressing (?) they paired with it was the most memorable part (the steak was good but it didn't stand out). One of my friends had brought a cake to serve after and the restaurant charged us $24 to serve it. Part of me understands this, but it also seemed like an unnecessary charge...we've been at plenty of restaurants that don't do this so that's where my bias is coming from ~~ Overall, the experience was very fine. Went to La Contenta Oeste for a girls' dinner (party of 3) on St. Patrick's Day, so it was definitely busy and lively. The space is dimly lit with a full dining room and bar, which made for a fun atmosphere. Service stood out, staff was welcoming, patient, and thorough in explaining the menu and specials, answering all our questions without rushing us. Cocktail selection is great, though our drinks leaned on the stronger side. For food, I ordered the birria de res, which was warm and hearty exactly what I was looking for. My friends got the salmon a la plancha with sweet plantains and platos fuertes, and everything was solid. This is some of the worst Mexican food I've had outside of an airport. In fact, when our food arrived, the first thing I said was "this looks like the food we had the last time we were at LaGuardia". I was truly shocked that in this neighborhood, and with the number of times I've passed by to see the restaurant packed, that everything was subpar. The service was fine. People were very nice, however, our drinks did take a long time to arrive after waiting a while to order. I got chicken tacos, which each had a full cup of cubed, fatty and dry chicken atop one or two shreds of cabbage. There was a little bland, white sauce. Maybe some green salsa, but about a tbs. worth. The tacos didn't come with any sides. I was actually quite shocked this was acceptable to serve white food without even any garnish. My partner got a quesadilla. Also chicken and the chicken inside looked exactly the same as the chicken in my taco. He had three salsa - red, white and green, unsure why but each was hotter than the next. At least his quesadilla had tomatoes and other vegetables inside - but he said the taste was only mediocre. Unfortunately, they don't have a quesadilla with a corn tortilla. The final bill was about $90 for two entrées and two drinks. This is a lovely restaurant for brunch. My boyfriend and I went here for our first brunch date and returned for our second year anniversary. The portions were large and very flavorful. La Contenta Oesta was decorated with flags, flowers and two drummers playing loud music. Located on Sixth Avenue and 11th Street, it created a feeling of a fiesta in the neighborhood. Not surprisingly as the first match of the FIFA World Cup Soccer was being played in Mexico's famous Estadio Esteca with Mexico facing South Africa. Inside the restaurant was buzzing with customers. I had chosen this place so that Helga didn't have to walk far on this sultry muggy day. We changed tables to get a better view of the screen but were disappointed as the television was not high up for all to see. The one in bar area was high but we couldn't hear any sound. The $26 5 Borough Winners Special created by Mayor Mamdani in honor of the World Cup 2026 was here. Neither of us found it quite appealing as it only came with chips, 3 salsas and a frozen margarita. Helga got a Modelo beer and i had tacos and a Margherita on the rocks with salt on the rim. A server was going around giving people shots of Mezcal. I didn't have any as the Margherita was beginning to give me a buzz and I didn't want to end up dancing on the table tops. When half time came the two drummers came inside the restaurant only to create such a loud cacophony that Helga decided to leave. I stayed a little while longer. Here the restaurant did not take into account that the customers came for the game with a meal thrown in. They should have made sure that everyone could see and hear the game properly. Both tv sets were breaking up which made us realize that they were old. I found the quality of the chips average and longed for the stellar ones at Oyomel and Tacos Grand Central. The tacos at Los Tacos No. 1 are also far tastier than what I was eating. Plus the Margheritas at Dos Caminos are to die for. The space was fully decked out for Pride, the music was fun, and the vibe overall was upbeat and lively. The menu, though, was a bit of a letdown. It felt really limited, and if you're picky or have dietary restrictions, you might struggle to find something that fits. I was also surprised that a Mexican restaurant didn't offer chips and salsa. Not even for purchase! I might've missed it on the menu, but I'm 80% sure they weren't offered... It's a small thing, but it stood out. Service-wise, it felt pretty impersonal. My server didn't introduce themselves or offer any recommendations. They just walked up, asked if I was ready to order, and then took the menus without saying anything else after I gave them my order. It wasn't rude exactly, just kind of cold and distant. I tried the Enchiladas de Mole, which were fine. The mole sauce was okay at best, but the chicken inside was bland and clearly unseasoned. The sauce kind of carried the dish, which is saying a lot... I also ordered the Oaxaca Spritzer. It was very smoky, so be warned if that's not your thing. They were out of the usual small popsicle garnish, but they gave me a big one instead so I could still enjoy the full experience, which I thought was a very nice and thoughtful thing to do. What enticed me about this menu is the choice of ingredients. We got a quesadilla for the table that was delish, a guac and chips and salsa, I ordered a vegan pozole and a mole verde, my friends the chicken mole and carnitas tacos. Vegan pozole was good, chicken mole was good, carnitas meh and mole verde was a sad site. They used the same sauce from the pozole, and it was DEFFFFFF frozen veggies with the frozen flavor. Bleh. Chef Luis Arte Mota accosted me today! My order was wrong twice and instead of coming to me to apologize he came to me aggressively which prompted me to walk out the restaurant. He then proceeded to follow me out of the restaurant and say the most racist things. Please note when this restaurant opened and had no customers for months I was the one who brought people to support then as I have seen businesses come and go. The staff would run outside as I passed to give me free drinks to go because they had no business. We tried their Queso Fundido and Tacos de Pescado to share at this location and the Queso Fundido was to die for if you like cheese. Tacos de Pescado was good but definitely needed to be eaten while hot. I also got to try their Mexican sparking wine which I personally found it very similar to Prosecco. The ambiance is dim with wallpaper depicting the day of the death. The place has a nice and romantic vibe to it, not too loud and dimly lit. Came by for dinner on a Thursday evening with a 5:30pm reservation. Although I was waiting for my friend, the hostess went ahead and seated me. The waitress brought a couple waters, and confirmed we were there to celebrate a birthday (my friend who had not yet arrived). Fun decorations to gawk at while I waited. We split the following dishes: Queso fundido - came piping hot with tortillas for dipping. Pretty heavy, but very tasty Grilled quesadilla - pretty standard quesadilla, stuffed to the brim with cheese, and very sauced up (I'm sure the cook has fun plating this) Steak huarache - two tacos topped with steak, mushrooms, lettuce, and sliced radishes. This was pretty good, meat was tender and well seasoned Birria de res - wasn't our favorite despite being the "main" entree. Chunks of beef (not the most tender) floating in a flavorful sauce. The enamel pot it came in was kinda massive for the amount of food, and took up a majority of the table. This came with fresh tortillas, which we ended up just dipping in the stew. We ordered a flan with berries as well, which our waitress graciously comped. This was very tasty, and the ideal way to finish the meal. The surrounding staff was very cognizant, refilling our water glasses and taking away any empty plates pretty much immediately. Fantastic service, very friendly staff, but unfortunately most of the food fell short. However, I am a big La Contenta Oeste tortilla gal - the tortillas are extremely fresh and tasty, carrying each dish (into my mouth). Another good but not great Mexican restaurant in Manhattan. I wanted to try it out for a while, given the positive reviews it got during the pre-Covid years. It was a decent but not exceptional experience. The vibes and decor are pretty cool, so definitely worth a trip after work for drinks. The food was so-so. The standout menu items were the guacamole and the margaritas. The guac was creamy and the right consistency so you know it wasn't puréed or over blended. The margaritas were unique and strong, yet balanced. Hard to be mad at them, although the usual disclaimer about Manhattan prices. The enchiladas and tacos were pretty average. If anything, nothing stood out and the enchiladas had too much sauce. Would I seek this place out? Probably not. Would I duck in here for drinks or a meal if I was in the neighborhood? My friend and I decided to check out La Contenta Oeste at 1:30pm on a Saturday. We made reservations, and the restaurant was decently crowded, so I would recommend reservations. We were seated at an oddly located 2-top table that seemed to be in the way of anyone walking by. I personally think the interior could use a bit of an upgrade for the vibe I think this restaurant is going for. The bar area seems very bougie, but the rest of the restaurant is not. We ordered the guacamole ($16), huevos rancheros ($17), and quesadilla ($17). The guacamole was tasty, but I thought the chips were a tad oily and tough. I could have demolished the guac with some Tostitos. My friend ordered the quesadilla and mentioned the most distinguishing factor was the use of oaxaca cheese, which elevated the taste. I thought the huevos rancheros were good, but nothing special. I think if the chips are made the same way as the tortillas, I just don't like the way this restaurant makes them / the source they are bought from. Service was great, albeit a tad aggressive. However, it was not aggressive to push us out! It seemed like the staff was striving to be extremely hospitable. For example, I still had my fork in my hand and a bit of beans and a slice of egg left, and one of the staff tried to take my plate away. After this, they still refilled our waters, so that's how I know they were not trying to kick us out. Decided to check out La Contenta since it came with high ratings on here so expected a lot. Did not live up to the rating at all. It was fine, just fine. Nothing great or spectacular. Got a few dishes to share: 1. Guac: standard nothing special 2. Crab taquitos: decent but nothing great. Liked how this had crab for a change though 3. Shrimp enchilada: not much shrimp inside. Just alright. 4. Chicken mole: this was waaaay too sweet of a mole. Lacked depth and balance. Pretty bad imo. We hardly touched this cause it was just way too sweet. Also got some cocktails. Just alright. Nothing great. I've had better elsewhere. Overall, I'd say La Contenta is a letdown. Skip this place. Food was un-memorable at best, blah. Service was decent. Place is cute. The chip to guac ratio was very off and we ended up having to ask for more chips every time, which isn't a bad thing but the service was definitely a bit below average. Our server returned to our table once every rare occasion. It seemed more of an understaffed issue since our server was one of two or three servers working the packed restaurant. Yeah, yelp description for one star says it all: 'not good'... I'd been to their other location and loved it so was excited to visit this new location (for me) and do HH there before a show. Never again. Just really lousy customer service and the food was meh. Guac was lousy, not fresh, salsa bland and again not fresh. I asked for a hotter salsa and they brought out somehow an even worse one. So basically strike one: didn't like the salsa but it was made worse by the fact that there was a hair in it. Strike two: I waited for probably 45 minutes for two tacos and during that time 2 people came and confirmed the taco order and then 15 minutes later one of them came back and said, 'wait, was that carnitas or carne asada?" Again, this was after two people (why two, I do not know) had confirmed the order. I then waited another probably 20 minutes for the two tacos. Strike three: one of the servers came over at like 5:30 and asked if I wanted anything else before HH ended at 6pm, and I said no... Well, I waited so long for the tacos, I would have probably gotten another drink (it was needed at that point), but she didn't come back again before happy hour ended. Highly recommend trying the pescado and carne asada tacos, we went splitsies and I'm so happy I got to try both. The guacamole was great as well. I got the blackberry gimlet which was delicious, but my two companions got the pina colada and were probably hammered from that one drink alone. It was HUGE and so strong.
