La Casa De Manuel

After living in the greater Denver area for nearly 30 years, it was kind of a shocking experience…read moreto discover a restaurant that appears to have existed for quite some time. Until today, I had never seen or heard of Savina's before. I accidentally found Savina when I was looking for an alternative restaurant downtown after I couldn't dine at an Italian restaurant only several blocks away (they had unexpected staffing shortage so they had to close it between lunch and dinner.) When I did a search online, Savina's was only a short drive from it. I simply wanted "food" so switching the cuisine from Italian to Mexican was no problem. I needed to do work on my phone so upon arrival, I asked for a table/seat that has outlet access. The kind receptionist then recommended I grab a seat at the bar. And wow! As I proceeded to it, nicely dimmed lights with great ambiance that spreads out all the way to the four corners of the restaurant welcomed me. That was when it dawned on me that Savina's was a high-end Mexican place. Mostly booth tables with some standalone tables in the middle. Wooden beams on the ceiling and bricks as walls, the interior is mostly brown. The very bar I chose to sit at is quite spacious. What caught my attention was the copper countertops at the bar. The rustic charms that were being emitted from it were elegant indeed. As the receptionist kindly instructed me to sit right in the middle of the bar for an easy outlet access, that's exactly what I did. The person in charge at the bar was Craig. He was most professional. His attentiveness was simply timely between the moments of quick conversation he and I had at the beginning. Their menu (for the kind of restaurant Savina is) is a bit small (at least that is what I thought) and yet I don't like massive ones that have food items after another because it causes me to be indecisive so for that reason, Savina's menu size was comforting. For a restaurant with this kind of high-end feel, the prices of the dishes were quite affordable. After a thorough perusal of it, I set my eyes on the Mexican Street Taco (chicken) that comes with three tacos, rice and refried beans. And as of this writing on 9/27/2026, the price of this dish is/was $24. Craig saw me put down the menu. He wasted no time to take my order and it thus was placed with the kitchen immediately. I had about 10 minutes to enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa and my freshly made decaf. To be frank, I wasn't expecting a decaf to be this good at a Mexican restaurant. I mean it was really good. It truly hit the spot. And somehow it paired so well with the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was also well made. My plate came out just in time. And it was quite the size. But what impressed me the most was, of course, the quality of it. The rice was well seasoned with the perfect texture/moisture. The refried beans were creamy but not to the point where it was soupy, had lots of flavors with the perfect amount of salt, and were properly mashed. And the protagonist of the plate, chicken tacos were of a good size. Each taco had a good number of diced chicken in them. And the avocado pieces in the tacos were very visible. And they were perfectly ripe with no brownness. The sauce that accompanied the tacos was also notable; a good amount of kick is what I tasted and yet it was a controlled heat. It sure was a nice enhancer. I was able to eat only half of what the plate had so I asked for a container from Craig which he promptly provided. Like I have already mentioned, Craig's attentiveness was spot on. I have to thank that Italian restaurant that was closed (LOL!) Had it not been the case, I don't think I would have discovered Savina's today. From the beautiful ambience to great service to good food, my late lunch at this Mexican restaurant was more than what I could have asked for. I will have to make a point to go back and dine there soon.

The restaurant was not very full when we got there but it was early and it was filling up when we were leaving. The homemade tortilla chips were awesome. They had just the right amount of salt. My husband said his was good although they put too many onions on top (if I had to guess it was 1/3 of an onion chopped-a little rediculous). He also had a Catalan margarita that was tasty. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. He talked to us about how he came to Denver from the east coast and liked it here. Overall, we would definitely recommend Savina's and if we are back in the area we would eat here again.

I typically lean towards tipping 25-30% with good service, so it was not a huge deal that there was an 18% auto-gratuity already added to the check. I grabbed a seat at the bar where the bartender was friendly and engaging. On a recent Wednesday at 7:15, the restaurant was packed. When I left around 8:30, it was still busy. That's usually the best review a restaurant can get. Loyal customers don't keep coming back out of habit. They come back because it feels like home. The all-day happy hour margarita for $9 certainly doesn't hurt. The second one arrives before you've had time to argue yourself out of it. I ordered the enchiladas with carne asada and their house mole. If you're expecting one of those intensely complex moles with enough ingredients to fill a pantry, this isn't that. Adelitas' version is comforting, approachable, and deeply homey. It tastes less like a culinary experiment and more like something your abuela has been making for decades. The carne asada was tender, the rice and beans were exactly what they should be, and every bite reminded me why comfort food never goes out of style. Before leaving, I made the smartest decision of the evening. Tres leches to go. I devoured it later at home while Netflix asked if I was still watching. The cake somehow manages to be light while completely satisfying. Don't skip it. Better yet, don't pretend you're saving it for tomorrow. Adelitas isn't trying to impress you. Luckily for my daughters sake, they brought those back 3. Weird, non Mexican salads like roasted beet and iceberg wedge 4. Vegetarian items left are mostly just cheese based. Very disappointing! And tonight was the kicker: The kids wanted the rio for Mother's Day but it was a long day and I knew we couldn't go out. Their website stresses that you can order online. I went through the whole order It was very organized Until I tried to pay. It kept saying the amounts had changed and I needed to change a selection but it wouldn't tell me which item and no amount of changing it worked. So I called. I was hung up on after waiting for 5 min I called back and waited longer She took my order but it was tough to get the girl to understand what we wanted. We SLOWLY went through each item, and every item was different than online (e.g. 3 tortillas per order instead of an order of a dozen online). I kept going. But the total? More than the full order online. I was done! I cancelled my order. I was already hesitant that we would t get the right items since it was so hard to get her to understand. But the higher price with half of the items and less amounts for each one? No thanks! I probably can't get away with avoiding the rip bc my kids still love it, but we used to embrace it and now we look for reasons we can't go. So, we looked for another. We found two. One was way South in Greenwood Village. We tried it, and it was okay, but not the same. The other one was this one in Westminster. So, we drove up there. We liked it. We like it better than we liked the one that used to be in Lakewood. I've always liked the flavors of Mexican food, but I was never really too hot on what is known as "Tex Mex," until Chuy's. I like the restaurant, I like the decor, and I have come to like the food. I admit I always get the same thing because I am vegetarian, and it is difficult to eat vegetarian in a Mexican restaurant. This place KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK serving beans, and rice that are VEGAN! No lard, no animal products, but all the taste, texture, and loveliness of regular Mexican. Even the corn tortillas are vegetarian. The flour tortillas are not, but they are made FRESH on site. I have found that I have come to love their "Big as yo face" burritos smothered in the Ranchero Sauce. The Ranchero Sauce is a milder sauce, but I like the flavor, and I just bring some of my own Ghost Pepper Powder to sprinkle on, and perk it up to standards! I love that I can eat Mexican rice and beans again and not worry about lard, or chicken broth, but with the SAME EXCELLENT flavor. Chuy's has become the only burrito I actually crave. THANK YOU CHUY'S! By the way, I thought the Lakewood location, (now closed), was pretty good. The Greenwood Village wasn't quite as good. The Westminster location, however, is the best of them all. It's a bit of a drive for me, but I love the food, I love the service, and I love the staff. By the way, their salsa that they serve with their chips is pretty darn good, too. It's spicy, but not too spicy, and I think most people will like it. They also serve a chipotle ranch sauce with the chips that has grown on me. I LIKE THIS PLACE! It took abnormally long to arrive and had sat under hot lights for so long that the tortillas were now taco shells. Of the 4 offerings, 2 were ground beef with whole onions. The third was uninspired and clearly unseasoned chicken. When I informed the server, she said she didn't eat their ground beef and didn't know it had onions. She did offer to have an enchilada remade, but by then I was just ready to get out of there. Waited another half an hour for the check. Never again.

SLAAAY! I got…read moreTorchy's twice from this location while we were staying in Denver last weekend for a local furry convention. We were staying at the hostel across the street, which made it extremely convenient to bop over here and snag food. I'm also a small dude, so one taco is really all I need to feel full, so one morning I got one of their breakfast tacos, and another day I did use their deal to get two tacos plus chips and a beverage (I couldn't manage to finish it all, so my husband got the rest lol). My point is, if you're only buying a single taco, you're only shelling out $5 to $6, which in this rapidly-inflating economy, is (depressingly) a good value. I got my meal to-go both times, utilizing their touch screen to place my order, grab a number, and take a seat near the kitchen to wait for food. I will admit that service is a bit slow for a "fast" food joint, but at least the inside is comfortable and relaxing. Just meant I got to sit in the A/C (which in August in Denver was really nice) and sip on my beverage while I waited (and snag a quick refill on my way out!). I did get really excited when I saw Dr. Pepper was one of the options on the soda machine, though perhaps that shouldn't surprise me since Torchy's is from Austin, TX and Dr. Pepper is manufactured right nearby in Waco, TX; they probably have a handshake agreement, haha. Dr. Pepper is my favorite soda pop, so any chain that carries it automatically gets more of my money. I was particularly impressed about how promptly they were open for business on Sunday morning. They actually had their OPEN sign illuminated and their doors open BEFORE the posted hours (just by a few minutes, but it meant I was the first customer there and able to get my day started that much quicker, which was appreciated). The food I got was all yummy, but I most especially liked the chips. They didn't taste like crummy fast food chain chips (looking at you, Taco Bell), they tasted like legit sit-down Mexican restaurant chips, with that solid crunch and oily feel. One of my tacos came with a lot of cheese (yay) but it got really stuck to the inside wrapper (oops). They are also generous with sauces in little cups to add to your tacos. In the future, when I'm not in a hurry, I may be curious to check out their alcoholic menu, as they do have a bar on the inside too. But that might be awhile when I'm next on a vacation, since this chain hasn't yet made it all the way north to Minnesota. I used to see them all the time back when I lived in Texas (naturally), but the nearest location to me currently is Kansas City... pfft.

Since I've been coming here since I was a baby, reviewing this place for me is like reviewing mom's cooking. Is it as good as I think it is? Probably not, but most of the time, there isn't anything I would rather eat. It's hard to make a bad decision on the menu. For starters the salsa is fantastic. I'm partial to Manuel's enchiladas but most people come here for the wet beef and bean burrito. Also worthwhile are the tacos and carne adovada. If you're vegan, like my wife, hope you like chips and salsa because there's little else on the menu for you. FYI-this is the epitome of a "hole in the wall restaurant". You seat yourself, there's only one waitress so if it's busy you might be sitting a while before you get your refill, and it's really hard to spend a lot of money. read more
