I am so thrilled I found La Campirana when I was recently in Evansville for the day. We came in at lunch and it was very busy with a mixture of people which is always a good sign! You order at the counter and find a seat. They didn't give us any numbers but still found us without any issue. The salsa bar was definitely a highlight and what drew me to this restaurant. They definitely adjusted the heat in the salsas to appeal to the most people, giving warnings of very hot and extremely hot. As a spice lover the hottest one was around a medium by my standard, but the flavors were excellent. We asked for some chips to sample the salsas before our meal arrived. They tasted homemade and very good. I ordered the chicken and pastor tacos with everything (cilantro, onions, lime) and also tried the pork tamale with green sauce. My bf had a chicken burrito. Everything was excellent, but the tamale was just a tad dry, but did taste homemade which was a plus. The tacos were well seasoned and the burrito was huge so we had leftovers. The food came out fast and before we left we also ordered a mango smoothie and mango with tajin/tamarind which was the perfect sweet treat. Basically you choose a protein option and toppings and that can apply to any entree option on the menu (tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, etc.) super customizable! Delicious street tacos! We order two burritos. One was supposed to be El Pastor. It was shredded corn beef which was disgusting in a burrito and the second was steak and it had so such fat it was inedible. All reputable restaurants know you cut all the fat off before using it. I have followed this restaurant since Washington square mall. Attention to detail. Food quality and hospitality have all went way down. If I had to stand here right now. I would rate it 3/10. Food just isn't good enough anymore. read more

Wow! So happy to find this casual dine Mexican restaurant that serves authentic food. I've driven past many times when I have been working in Evansville but never noticed La Campirana. But today I searched Yelp, looking for something different, and found it. Thanks, Yelpers! Everything from single tacos to Mexican entrees is available. There are pictures on the wall to help you make your decision. I ordered enchiladas and a side of refried beans. The enchiladas (4) were covered with chili pepper sauce and topped with roasted carrots and potatoes. The combination was delicious. The side of beans was very generous and tasty. There is a salsa bar, and everything is labeled, and includes heat level: mild, medium, hot, hot, or very hot. My only regret is that I didn't try the tres leches, which looked wonderful. Next time for sure. The employees are very friendly and helpfully explain menu items and make suggestions. So many choices! The food and service made this place a perfect stop on our 17 hour drive! It was worth it to drive a little out of the way for their delicious food and drinks! I ordered a beef burrito and 2 Tacos ( cow tongue and mushroom). They have this a sauce/condiment bar so you can get what you want for your meal. I think I took a mix of 2 sauces in small containers and my meal was to go. By the time I got back to my hotel to eat the tacos first, they did not give me the mushroom taco. No worries, I wasn't charged because looking at receipt it looked like the guy never even included it in my order. Second, the meat in the burrito tasted like mostly tendon not actual meat. So I was pretty disappointed on all fronts. The tongue taco was also flat because everything was kinda soggy. If I feel compelled I will look at their menu again maybe there is something that will cause me to back and try something else. read more

We were looking for a Mexican place to eat, having been rather successful with other restaurants around the area. The menu looked OK and the prices good - so we thought we'd give this place a try. I didn't realize it was a cafeteria style, almost fast food set up. Had I have known that, we would have eaten elsewhere. But since we were here and the food looked authentic (not fast food, chain restaurant style), we gave it a try. COVID rules - wear the mask upon entry and keep it on until seated. The queue was like a fast food place and they made your food like Subway sandwich style. Soda came in the bottle - possibly good possibly bad. No refills like a sit down place but also no over-charge. We found a place to sit - important since it was casual self-seated style. Our food was brought to our table in a fair amount of time. It's not like I wanted to spend a lot of time there, given it was not like a sit-down restaurant. Hubby got the quesadilla and it was as good as elsewhere. He makes his own at home which he overstuffs with chicken and veggies - this was not like that, of course. But it was better than what you'd get at Taco Bell. I got the chicken salad. It came in the edible shell so I was concerned about size. Often they consider the shell a big piece of the meal and barely put anything in it. So I don't really eat it - that's a problem. Good news - there was a fair amount of salad in it and not just shredded lettuce and chicken. I did taste the shell and it was nice and flaky - not just greasy like I've had before. So overall - it was better than I thought might occur - cheaper than a sit-down meal - but we had the offset of ambience and service, with came with the cheaper ticket. So come again? Nope. But definitely OK in my book. read more

Tried this place on a recommendation from a friend who apparently needs to get out more often for Mexican food. I didn't expect Tex Mex, but I did expect some sensibilities in creating a dining experience for customers. This was like dining in the Stone Age. I'm not a fan of counter service, which seems so prevalent here in Evansville, and while the menu looked decent it lacked a certain necessity; why bother putting out a salsa bar if you don't offer chips of any sort, free or not? There was no number mast given for the server to find us and we watched him ask four other parties if he had their food before he got to us. The food was reasonably prepared but bland bland bland. No seasoning on anything. The salsa was the only spicy stuff in this place and I've had better. Why bother? Won't be back. read more

We are from out of town and came here with local family. Just loved the al pastor tacos I had with a side of rice and beans. Sometimes at other restaurants the al pastor meat can be dry, but it was perfect here: so flavorful. It's the best authentic Mexican food you can find in the area! We were in Evansville for a Taekwondo Tournament and were looking for a quality Mexican restaurant. I'm happy to say that this was worth our visit. Tacos, tortas, tamales, and the guacamole were all freshly made. Tacos we tried included al pastor, lengua, tripa, chicharrón verde, and chorizo. All were top notch! If you haven't been to La Campirana, stop reading right now and go. Really. I'll wait. Okay, now that you've tried the best Mexican food around, I'm going to wax poetic about how good it is. My family and I stopped here after coming to town for a birthday party, and even though we drove all the way from Louisville, we agreed that it was worth the 2 hour drive. The food was SO fresh, with no grease drippings in sight, and it came out within 5 minutes of ordering. I ordered chicken enchiladas and my husband ordered chicken tacos, and both were plated beautifully and could honestly be part of a master class in how to plate authentic Mexican food. The flavors were exciting and comforting all at once, and the salsa bar is a ton of fun. The service was professional and friendly, and instantly welcoming. It was our first time eating at La Campirana, but we felt like we belonged at once. I can't wait to visit Evansville again just so I can go back to La Campirana. I love this place, and will be back many times. I tried the birria today as I haven't had it yet, and well it's not birria. If you've had birria, and are used to spicy pepper and aromatic braised beef in a consommé dipped tortilla with Oaxaca cheese griddled golden brown and served with a bowl of consommé to dip, this isn't it. It was fine, but it's not birria. Basically although good, it was a deconstructed assembly plate for rib meat tacos, aluminum wrapped tortillas provided. The rib meat is just standard that is on the tacos and the "consommé" given for dipping taste like heated up tomatillo salsa? This "birria" is confused. Just order the tacos. read more
