This was a random find for myself and a friend. It's a little wonky to find parking - either on the main road or they have a small parking lot behind the building but certainly worth the work to find parking. We were very surprised by the design when we walked in - the frontage is very unassuming. I have been to many areas of Italy - some casual and some very upscale. This restaurant is a little in between. But it's charming and beautiful. We sat at the counter bar and it was a really cool place to be. It's right in front of the kitchen but also very quiet and easy to have a conversation. It's clear that the family that owns the restaurant has spent a lot of time traveling through Italy, the menu is very reflective of many of the regions. The menu was beautiful and certainly has something for everyone. We split a couple entrees but started with the prosciutto which was fantastic - I'm a bit picky about this app because sometimes it's the standard presentation that to me is boring. This dish had a perfect combination of accompaniments - it was light and is a very good starter. For entrees we had the eggplant - the tomato ragu on it was super flavorful. We also ordered the Pork Tenderloin Milanese - this dish is no less than amazing!!!! Highly recommend. The wine we chose was Ceretto Barolo- a perfect match for the entrees. We finished with the desert special - an elegant warm pear tart ... yum ! The service was excellent- we were fortunate to get one of the family members who was charming and gave us a little bit of the family history and great explanations of the dishes before we ordered. Every once in a while, I return to a favorite restaurant and leave feeling compelled to update the review I know I must have previously written, only to discover I haven't written one ‍  That's what happened after leaving La Campania the other night. My apologies to the team -- you deserve every one of the five stars in my rating. This funky, cool, yet elegant Italian dining spot is one of my go-to 'date night' spots when we are in the mood for upscale Italian. During our last visit, we enjoyed a Fried Squash Blossoms appetizer that reminded me of the first time I had this dish (in Italy). It's so easy to overdo it with cheese and sauce, which, in my opinion, just masks the flavors. Theirs is lightly sauced and has just the right amount of cheese. She started with a Rollatini Salad (I think that's what it's called) - rolled eggplant wrapped with prosciutto and stuffed with veggies & greens. She shared it with me and we both thought it was excellent. She ordered a Figs & Duck Confit "Pizze" (flatbread-style pizza cooked in a brick oven) and loved it. I had the Veal Saltimbocca, which included seared wild mushrooms and creamed spinach for the vegetables.  I made the mistake of ordering a small portion of the Tagliolini--a mistake ONLY because I didn't need it. I couldn't finish my meal, so I took it home with me and had it for lunch the next day. One of these days MAYBE we'll leave room for dessert. But we've been unsuccessful so far. read more

Not so hidden Waltham gem, with an interior reminiscent of an Italian country villa. The well-appointed outdoor terrace houses 6 tables that can seat about 20, making it ideal for groups and small parties. The interior comprises several cozy micro spaces that provide a feel of being a guest in a friend's Tuscan home. We started with an Arancini (a Sicilian street food made of risotto that's rolled into a ball, stuffed, breaded, and gently fried) wrapped on prosciutto and on a pillow of Mozzarella. Delicious. Next came a risotto with pan-seared scallops, shrimp, yellow and red cherry tomatoes, and lobster stock. Joyous. We tried a special of the evening: Fresh crab ravioli with marscapone and Parmegiani, lobster sauce and pea tendrils. I found this to be relatively bland and was the only true disappointment of the evening. The pièce de résistance was the next dish: Salt encrusted whole Bronzini, wood over roasted, accompanied by a "teeny" green and French pear salad, and whole roasted garlic. $36 and worth every penny. On the gratuitous side, I'd recommend the hot chocolate soufflé with vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate ganache, which must be ordered a bit in advance. It held its shape, and will tickle your sweet tooth; very worth busting one's diet. Ask for Tim, one of the most accomplished waiters in the northeast, who won't disappoint in terms of service and knowledge. Overall, we enjoyed the execution of Campania's creative menu, its knowledgeable and attentive wait staff, and the warm, inviting decor. La Campania comes close to delivering on all the elements of a Michelin star establishment. read more

I cannot speak highly enough about my experience at La Campania last night. While the food was absolutely incredible, the best part was our wonderful waiter, Angelo. Angelo knew the details of the menu to such detail, showing how passionate he was about the beautiful meals prepared. He also was so personable, he remembered my name and when we left, I felt like he was my friend. We had dinner at the patio on a summer evening. It was very pleasant and enjoyable time. It is the first time for us to be at this restaurant. The outdoor ambiance is very nice, although it is next to a busy road. The service was very good. We enjoyed the fresh air not being enclosed. We hope to come back in the colder weather to eat inside. The menu looked very interesting and hard to make decision. We were pleased when the bread service came out. It was warm, tasty, and no extra charge! We shared appetizers, fried squash blossoms and fig arugula insalata. One disappointment we had was the arugula in the salad could have been fresher. Otherwise, tasted very good. For entries, we had risotto, gnocchi, a rack of lamb. We enjoyed all of our entrees, well done and professionally prepared. We also ordered chocolate soufflés. Let's start with the service -- I asked for a glass of water, and the waiter proceeded to open an $8 bottle of sparkling water instead. I asked I needed a just a glass of water not an entire bottle while he looks a me and says: "We only have bottles." What?? The pizza was another letdown -- it shouldn't even be called pizza; it was more like a tiny flatbread. Sadly this restaurant did not impress. The rock shrimp dish was great, the olive oil too and that was it. The beef carpaccio was cut too thick. I'm speechless!!! Every moment was truly sublime. The staff makes you feel like family in 2 seconds. Old school incredibly warm service. The food??!!! THE food - speechless, absolutely speechless every morsel was delicious in ways I simply do not know what the words are to even start describing how much I loved every bite. One of my 'rules' for the 'secret' to an amazing restaurant is the exterior! In this case, all by itself, off the main row of restaurants, with a super blah exterior ... which means the food must be incredible! Every seat was taken, and there are several tables. You must make a rez, or no way getting a table. Each guest seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their dining experience. Quiet sophisticated clientele who looked like they were regulars. Ambiance 5 star, presentation 5 star. Great place with lots of history. At the recommendation of our server, I went with the Veal Osso Bucco. My Veal Osso Bucco looked awesome, great presentation. The server was good, had us mouthwatering, he raved about the succulent flavor and tenderness. I found the dish bland, boring and not really all that tender. I had to use a knife to cut off bone. The gravy needed salt and pepper, if this is a reduction, it has serious issues. Two of our group had the same comments, maybe it was just a bad Osso night.... Just not a great meal, oh well, win some loose some. read more

Honestly don't have enough amazing things to say about this restaurant. Location is slightly random but there is plenty of parking. Super cozy inside, the atmosphere is very authentically Italian without trying too hard. Our waiter (Angelo I believe his name was) did an AMAZING job, really treated us right and made sure we were happy with everything, he was a total expert. The food was obviously also amazing, everything we got was delicious, but I'd say the must haves are the oyster appetizer, the salad with artichokes, and the veal chop. The prices may be a little higher than other Italian spots in the area but that's because the food is just that good. Highly recommend and will DEFINITELY be back. read more

La Campania is better than any Italian place in the North End (and I've been to several). I went with my wife for her birthday. We were seated in the courtyard outside which was perfect with strings of lights around, potted herb plants etc. The tables around were occupied but conversation was quiet and relaxed and not noisy. The waitstaff was lovely. Great attitude, prompt and helpful. The food was delicious - we shared a Prosciutto di Parma which had excellent flavor, I had a Pan Seared Halibut that was cooked perfectly and my wife had the Pork Tenderloin Milanese which she loved. And the dessert was a Chocolate Soufflé that was outstanding. It wasn't too sweet but had great balance of flavors. The wine list this place had was incredible. And another bonus - plenty of street parking available. This was my second time here. The first time (a great meal with my work crowd) was over fifteen years ago. I'm writing this review on behalf of my parents who celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary at La Campania last night. I called ahead earlier in the evening to pay for a bottle of wine so that we could surprise my parents upon their arrival at the restaurant. The process of doing so was incredibly easy and seamless and the woman I spoke with on the phone could not have been nicer. My parents got home from dinner and RAVED about their entire experience at the restaurant. They informed me that the service was fantastic, the ambiance was superb (not too loud which is often their main complaint about other restaurants) and the food was incredible. My mom went so far as to claim that La Campania is her new favorite restaurant! The only "complaint" they had (which was not even a complaint about the restaurant itself!) was that they wished more people (in general) still got dressed up to go out to dinner . Again, this was not a complaint about the restaurant, but rather an observation about the casual nature of today's attire (even when dining at a nice restaurant!). I love this restaurant! The staff is always so welcoming and professional. The ambiance is like a cozy Italian country house. And the food is always absolutely top notch. We have been there many times and gotten many different items and have yet to have anything that wasn't delicious. Go during truffle season and get the truffle pasta - you won't regret it! Spent $300 doing just that only to be scolded by some pompous head of hair with glasses on that he'll "let it slide this time" but that we "should've told" that that's "all" we were there for. We recently celebrated our anniversary at La Campania and it was a wonderful experience. From the first conversation with the host making the reservation over the phone, to several staff wishing us a good night and Happy Anniversary, the service was like family. Tom our waiter was quick to help us choose a wonderful red sparkling wine to toast the night, which we also enjoyed with the made to order hot chocolate soufflé for dessert. My husband, who travels the world, said the Veal Saltimbocca was the best he had ever tasted! I enjoyed the seafood risotto and caprese salad with heirloom tomatoes. Came for a work dinner and cannot say how wonderful the experience was. Our service was top notch and the team that took care of us provided excellent care of our party from keeping it warm on the patio, making sure our food was delivered and kept up with us and kept waters, wine and cocktails coming. We had a multitude of apps and everyone had different dinners and all were excellent. Some stars that stand out were the flatbread with fig- so good. Oysters Rockefeller, the buffalo mozzarella, braised beef short rib ravioli. I had the gnocchi for my entree and it was light and flavorful. Several had the tenderloin and it was also amazing (I had a taste as it was my second choice) . Another person near me had the cod special and she said it was light and flaky- she is local and the branzino is her usual go to. Desserts also came but I only tried the chocolate soufflé and it was melt in your mouth. This was a special meal and if I had an opportunity to eat here again, it would be excellent I am sure- perfect place for a special night out. read more

Pictures do not do a justice. La Campania has been on my list for several years but I kept deferring since I thought it was just another Italian Restaurant. I'm normally not a fan of an Italian food in the US. My friends have been raving about this place so I decided to go. There is another Italian restaurant in town that has good review but my friends said this one was the best. I wish I tried it sooner. It's now will be my go to place. The food is very flavorful and solid desserts. They serve quality tea from Harney & Sons as well. Lobster Gnocchi 5/5 - The Gnocchi is one of the best. Melted in my mouth. The lobster was cooked perfect. Medium rare which is the way it should be. Roasted Beet "Insalata" 5/5 - Solid dish. Nothing special but very good Poached Octopus 5/5 - the Octopus was very tender. One of the best I've had. It's simple but you have to like Octopus to like this dish Rack of Lamb 6/5 - this is their most popular dish. It seasons really well. Very well executed Veal Chop 4/5 - I may have given this a 5 star if we didn't try the lamb. The veal taste milder comparing to the lamb dish but it's still good. Salt Encrusted Whole Branzino 5/5 - we had one as a whole and another one that they fillet for us. Prepared in a simple way, with Olive Oil, just like how they do it in Europe. It's a light dish. Chocolate Soufflé - 4.5/5 - I would have given it a 5 star if they would called it a chocolate molten cake. It's not the typical light fluffy soufflé. It's heavier and thicker but tasted very good. Assorted Pastries - 5/5 I didn't expect to like this. It was such as surprise that all 3 Pastries were very good. I love the mini pecan tart best. The Panna Cotta was nice and light, too. The restaurant is small. I was surprised that the noise level wasn't that loud which was a plus. The service was good, not great. Some severs didn't seem to enjoy their job that much but they all tried. Easy parking on the street or in the back of the restaurants. All in all... I'll be back! read more

First time here and honestly I think it's my first time at an authentic Italian restaurant! So much surprise by the food, the environment, the service and everything! Starting off when my friends and I walked in to this restaurant, we were amazed by the pretty indoor design of La Campania. It was definitely a perfect place for dating! The design made me feel like I'm in mid-century Europe haha. We ordered the fig and duck pizza which was absolutely stunning, I like the combination. The grilled oyster was a bit salty for me especially the cheese on top of it, but first bite it was impressive. My fav dish would probably be the veal chop as I haven't had this juicy texture of beef in a while which I absolutely love not to mention I don't eat beef on a daily basis. The creamy potato sauce on top of the veal was everything! The risotto in my opinion was alright, it's kind of weird that they have corn inside made it sweet and salty in the same time, not my personal type of dish haha. But the soufflé was everything I was looking for in a dessert! It was put in a fine pottery, the ice cream was perfectly blended with the hot chocolate underneath, making it the best dessert for a cold chilly winter day. Also, almost forget to mention how good the bread was lol. Have to dip it with the sauce they served it set the tone of the whole meal lol. Anyway, I would absolutely come back here for a second visit, try more food on the menu and just enjoy the inner environment again! read more

Overall: Average to good. Not great, nowhere near bad, but overall good to average. Unfortunately Italian restaurants in the US usually completely screw up traditional Italian anyways. Ambience- Cute little place with a nice bar area (would have been my choice) and nice seating area that makes you feel like you're in someone's home or a Trattoria. Menu- Good overall Service- decent. I can't ding too much as there was a large table that was absorbing most of the waiters time. It felt like my table of 2 was an afterthought and they would get to us once the larger table (birthday I think) was taken care of..This "dance" played out the entire night. Drinks: Ordered two cocktails to start. The Port Old Fashioned and the Elderflower Spritz/champagne drink. Both good. Food- Good to average. Bread on arrival was decent. We got 2 meager olives each with the bread (weird?) Ordered two Insalata salads that were quite good- mushroom and a goat cheese salad. For the entree I ordered the short rib ravioli which was relatively flavorless and short on the meat. I've had this dish in many other restaurants in this one was a flop. Girlfriend ordered the mushroom gnocchi which was much better then mine. For desert I ordered the chocolate souffle and GF ordered the Apple tart. Both acceptable but nothing "wow. You have to order desert the same time as the entree which I also didn't like. Other: Neither of us ordered a coffee, because as I said our table of two seemed to be an afterthought between the larger party we probably wouldn't have gotten it or it would have been cold (my entree ravioli was barely warm...). I barely was able to order vino with my meal (had cocktails to start). My recommendation is for a table of two to go to the bar. I like the vibe better and the service /attentiveness is likely higher (I generally prefer the bar everywhere). Overall: Neither my guest nor I were wowed. Wasn't bad by any means, but not "wow" either. I generally don't eat Italian out since most restaurants around screw up what should be simple and flavorful dishes and opt for big price tags and overpriced wine. I generally go for things I can't cook at home. This was a birthday celebration so wanted to try. read more
