We love Mexican food, and we found this as a highly rated "hole in the wall" restaurant. There were less than 10 tables, and the restaurant had little to no English on it. I knew it would be great! I had three tacos with beans and rice, and my partner had a burrito. It was my own fault I forgot to ask for no onions, and the tacos are basically meat, onions, and cilantro. They were pretty easy to pick off, so I still loved them! (Carne asada, pastor, and barbacoa) My partner ordered a burrito and didn't realize it would be smothered in sauce. Sometimes the best food comes from the most unassuming place. This little shop on Colfax and Penn is a mainstay for locals. Simple tacos piled high with meat and complimented simply by cilantro, onions and delicious salsa. This family owned business has been around for years and it is easy to see why. It only took me 11 months to walk the two blocks from my office to this restaurant and give it a try! Woo hoo! Had lunch with a friend today at La Abeja. Attempted to walk into the wrong door not once, but twice. Felt like that kid from the Far Side comic strip for Midvale School for the Gifted. You know the one. For future reference, you want to enter the door on the east side of the restaurant, not the west. You're welcome. After finally making it into the shop through the proper door I then struggled to figure out where to order the food. For even more future reference, you order at the counter. And yes, there are signs all over the walls informing you of this fact. You're welcome. I ordered two carne asada tacos. Delicious. Super tasty horchata, too. Also had some prime seats for people watching as they meandered by the store. Admittedly, some folks opted to stare at us as they passed by (see: old lady wearing weird visor/cap thing and glasses that appeared like she'd just had a glaucoma test), but hey, all good. The company certainly was nice too. If I was to review David S., he'd totally get five stars. That sounded naughty and wasn't meant to be, but run with it. Right, so the tacos! Very good. I am definitely going to go back soon and try some of the other stuff they have to offer. About the only thing I'll whine about is that the folks who work there didn't really seem to concern themselves too much with customer service. Food first. The steak was deliciously seasoned, the chili is one of the best I've ever had, if not the best! Great flavor with just a bit of heat. I've lived blocks away for several years and have thought about trying this place out many a time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why the long wait? It is, after all, on foreboding Colfax. My daylight outing was almost uneventful, but I would never even think of going with the moon shining. I do love great food, and this place makes it, BUT, I value my life. La Abeja is a small bakery cum taqueria located on a somewhat shoddy, dodgy block of Colfax between a weird tobacco shop and a gunky hair salon. Upon entering, you place your order with the counter person and go grab a seat in the back. In times when you are the only patron, you can clearly hear the sound of fevered chopping going on as soon as your order is dropped. That's your lunch bein made hot shot. I love being the only caucasian here, which happens quite often. The atmosphere recalls a lot of places I've eaten in mexico, the same pastel color scheme, plasticy table cloths, minimalistic decor. The staff is friendly and understands just enough english to get your order right. But then, the food. This is some authentic Mexican fare, not the sort of Benny's bland ol cheese bomb sort. The tacos pastor are possibly the best in town and the lengua rich and tender, both with a little sprinkling of onions and cilantro.. perfect. The burritos are a bit obscene in size but doused in their green chile they've never made the better of me. I take 'em down like they were lookin at me. Pulling up Yelp revealed this place; needless to say, we loved it! Tiny hole in the wall place, menu is in Spanish, employees clearly speak English as their second language. Very friendly and patient as we reviewed the menu. *$2 tacos were sizable and outstanding; we got carnitas and steak. *Fast service, very affordable. *The food was so good, I had to order 2 more tacos after eating 4. They usually aren't that busy, but on my last visit, all I could hear was the ringing of the door! Thankfully I got there before the rush. There usually isn't a long wait for your food, I believe the longest I've ever waited was 5 minutes. Quick, quick service! The food is also surprisingly cheap! I love it. This is as good as Mexican Gets; Or as Tex-Mex, New-Mex, Wet-Mex gets. Positioned on a not so attractive block next to a shiver-inducing used mattress store, you would never know what lies within. It fronts as a bakery, and a sparse one one at that, but don't be fooled. I must have walked past this door 100 times over my time in Denver. I can never get those 100 times back... Go in. We came here because of the 4 star rating but Im not sure where that comes from. Pretty disappointed. I got charged $14 for carne asada tacos. Tacos did not come with rice and beans and veggies the way a normal $14 plate would, AND the meat was very low quality, lots of fat/gristle, I barely ate my lunch :( My friend wanted vegetarian, we figured there would be a veggie taco or burrito option. The guy at the counter said oh yes, we have a great vegetarian burrito! And she asked if she could have it as tacos. A few caveats first: I don't go to Mexican restaurants that put out chips and salsa first thing. Like I'm supposed to dive into it and murmur "I'm eating Mexican food now!" No, I go to little out of the way unassuming places like La Abeja for the real deal. So for me this place was a real treat. It was my first time there today (I only found out about it here on Yelp). I speak enough Spanish to get around and El Patron was kind enough to speak slow enough for me. I couldn't order everything the first time so I started with two tacos, Carne Asada and Barbacoa. Both were great in a minimalist way. The tomatillo salsa (I'm guessing that was the main green ingredient) was tasty and not too hot. What can I say, it was everything I hoped for in a first visit. First off, I have not had the tacos from La Abeja, I have only had the breakfast burritos, chilaquiles and conchas. All were decent, but nothing too special. The chilaquiles made me sick for the next 36 hours, so I do not think I will be back again. Looking at the other reviews, I think I may have screwed up having breakfast and not lunch or dinner, but after getting sick from the chilaquiles, I am over La Abeja for a while. read more

Closest Mexican place to my place so when I'm in need and in no desire to drive (see hungover) it treats me well. However, compared to El Taco or Los Carboncitos this place can't compete based off a smaller menu, hours and quality of food. As many others have mentioned the Carne Asada here is great and best served up in a smothered burrito. I've enjoyed an assortment of tacos here and they're HUGE - three should suffice, four if you're a big eater. The tacos though have bordered on A-OK with none really impressing me. My daughter wanted menudo and after finding this online we decided to try it. The place is not in a very nice area, it is not fancy at all and i don't think the heater was on as it was a bit chilly inside. But the menudo was excellent. It was spicy but not overwhelmingly spicy, super tasty. The horchata was also good, a bit sweet to my taste, but my daughter loved it. So as a non native coloradan I didn't quite get the point of green chili until I had a carne asada burrito smothered in it from La Abeja. I couldn't understand how anyone could think it could compete with the salsa verde I make at home from scratch. Then I realized its its own delicious monster once I bit into the perfect mix of cheesy, beany and meaty goodness of their burrito smothered with a glorious mix of spicy and flavorful green chili. I realized that La Abeja had in their chili what no one else had, a perfect mix of flavors and heat that remind me of true mexican flavors versus the overly spicy flavorless gunk I get at most other places in Colorado. While the location and decor leave a little to be desired, I personally feel its sketchiness gives it a little authenticity and flavor. And while I don't always feel 100% safe walking to the restaurant, the gentleman who runs the register always makes me feel safe and at home once inside (Also slightly guilty with his accusatory "Back again?"). It can be difficult to find hole-in-the-wall Mexican joints that offer something for vegetarians, but La Abeja now has a new regular veggie customer, like it or not! I was looking for a place to have lunch with some visiting East Coast pals, who specifically requested a local Mexican joints, as the pickins in PA can leave you in tears. My friends got carnitas tacos and chicken enchiladas and raved about both dishes. And we had some yummy, fresh-baked sweets from the panaderia on the way out.
