This restaurant is thoughtfully done down to every detail. I love sitting at the bar and watching the open kitchen while enjoying impeccable dishes and drinks. The staff has been courteous, helpful and knowledgeable every time. Everything I have tasted has been delicate and flavorful making it obvious that ingredients are mindfully selected. I am so thrilled to have this cozy restaurant in our hood :) read more

I wanted to like this place very much. The ambiance is great, but the food and service are just okay. We started with the fried zucchini, and it was really bland and served on its own (which maybe wouldn't have mattered if the zucchini had salt or something on it). We asked for something to dip it in and got an equally mild lemon aioli, so we ended up not finishing it. For the price, it was not what we expected. The mushroom lasagna was really good - flavorful and different; I would recommend it if you go. The casarecce was similar to the fried zucchini; it was okay but nothing that couldn't be made at home. The s'mores dessert was fun and unique, and tasted pretty good. What would keep me from giving this place another try is the service because we felt like we were being rushed out. A waiter/waitress came over to take our plates or cups every few minutes even when we weren't finished. We had to stop them from taking our drinks and food at least 3 times. Nobody was intentionally rude or unfriendly, but it became intrusive and distracting. Hopefully others have had a different experience, but that was ours. read more

L'Oca d'Oro - S'mores dessert...pretty good. - Italian Near Me - Austin, Texas

Decided to try out L'Oca d'Oro last night with a group of four. We made a reservation at 7pm on a Thursday, but we didn't really need to. I imagine it might get crowded during their happy hours or during the weekends though. The look of the restaurant is what drew me to it in the first place (That and its out of downtown, but still in the hood location.) It's airy, bright, clean, and comforting all at the same time. They have a few outside seating spaces and it really fits in with the Mueller aesthetic. They have a full cocktail and wine/beer menu, and so we started with cocktails. I loved my Baden Baden Spritz, which was gin, lemon, and ?? Whatever it was, it was delicious and refreshing and it was a struggle for me to only have one. Have I found my drink of the summer??? Family style is the best way to eat off their menu so you can try many things, however, all portions were not too heavy and perfect to eat solo. The menu also goes from lighter to heavier as you read down it: so snacks and apps at the top, shareable or side vegetables, pasta, and then more protein based main entrees at the bottom. I get the feeling that they will change their menu with the seasons, as many of their items were locally sourced. Our table consumed every last bite of : *grilled foccacia with honey,--YUM *grilled zucchini with leeks and brown butter sauce??--Delicious, subtle, and perfectly cooked, not mushy as you might think. *Spinach Ricotta Raviolo- one large ravioli with tons of goodness packed inside. Has beets so the colors on the plate were AMAZING too. My friend who ordered just kept talking about how good it was. *Spaghetti alla Carbonara *Casarecce- Was mine to taste so DELICIOUS! spicy Italian sausage, tomatoes, the most perfect mushrooms, and these amazing noodles. Thick almost like Udon noodles, but imagine a tube cut open and folded in? YUMMY. As I mentioned... everything was so delicious. Their dessert menu looked great, but I would add that there was nothing on there that did not contain dairy. We had a lactose-intolerant friend and so opted out of dessert. Their staff was personable, immediately accommodating, and professional. I would trust their recommendations. And the best part: All staff are paid a living wage and given an included 20% gratuity on all checks, so I felt great about it, and the payment at the end was super easy. I will be back soon! read more

Way too expensive! Portions are very small and dishes were pretty lackluster. I ordered the calabrese sausage dish. It was one normal size (Meyers sausage) piece of sausage, 2 pieces of grilled cabbage, and beans. This was $17. My fiancé got the spaghetti with olive oil. The spaghetti was really good- so I do want to highlight that. However, there was zero protein, and it was a very very small portion for $11. I would love nothing more than this place to make it, but they have to adjust the pricing. Two couples that walked out after us said "wow, that was too expensive." read more

We have eaten in the past at L'Oca d'Oro and enjoyed the service and meal, unfortunately this last visit was disappointing. Our drinks arrived well after our two appetizers. The server although nice was not well informed on the main courses. We ordered the Carbonara with pink peppercorn, the flavor was overwhelmed by peppercorn. I got the short ribs, and frankly this was the biggest disappointment, it was not edible, two small pieces of skin hidden under some greens. I will say that I felt the manager did his best to make-up with an unexpected ice cream dessert, which was nice. I hope my review does not become the new norm..... read more

A top chef in Austin recommended this restaurant to my husband and I and we are so grateful they did. Cannot say enough amazing things about this place. Here's what I love about this place: The farm to table- Italian concept, the quality and care they put into every last detail of each dish, the fact that they home-make everything down to their cheeses and pasta, and fantastic liqueurs, the fact that they source sustainable and local incidents. This place is a foodie's dream come true and I could not recommend it more. read more

I came in for brunch early afternoon and sat at the bar with my mama! (Manny, the bartender, was amazing!) They have really creative brunch cocktail offerings listed on their menu, which is a fun switch-a-roo from the regular ol mimosa or Bloody Mary you can get anywhere. We tried the Mia Mimosa, which has gin/rosemary/lemon/prosecco, and the Mash Note, which has tequila/grapefruit/cappelletti/prosecco. Both were SO delish and SO refreshing! For food, I had the Chickory Salad, which was light and fresh! But also very fulfilling with the hazelnuts (unique and delicious!), house cheese and a lemon vinaigrette. Left me very satisfied but feeling great to then go walk around the farmers market down the corner! My mama had the recommended Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe, with the added egg, which she loved and it was the perfect portion size for her! I like how the portion sizes are smaller (really, just how they should be!) because you are not left feeling too full, just satisfied and happy! Even for dinner I believe I'd be very happy with this, especially because I'd be able to try out more of the delicious options! As for the automatic gratuity....awesome!! I love what they are trying to do here by paying their staff a living wage. I will always tip 20% at least and the service here was top notch. I believe that anyone who complains about the automatic gratuity in other reviews are ones who would have opted for a lower amount (not ok!!) so it makes me happy this is instilled to prevent that from being able to happen. If you "would have tipped more", what is the problem?! Anyways, great restaurant and location. It's also adorable inside and the patio looked like a place I'd like to be on a sunny afternoon! read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants in Austin. Without exception, the dishes range from very good to excellent. Each time we come here the menu is different so we always get to try new things. Everything is made from scratch, the management visit with every table, and the prices are reasonable for Austin and for everything being made in-house. The last time we went we split 2 apps, 2 pastas, and 2 entrees and a dessert with 4 people were stuffed by the end. There was a whole snapper dish on the menu which was new and we gave it a shot. Unreal...I am not sure what they did to that snapper but it was one of the most savory and delicious preparations of a whole fish I've ever had. Cocktails are legit. Whatever you do, make sure you save room for that smore tower thing they make for dessert. It's divine. read more

My wife and I went here recently. On a whole we enjoyed our experience. The atmosphere was inviting and the waitstaff friendly. The food/drinks were enjoyable and moderately priced for the most part. I would recommend both pasta dishes we ordered - Casarecce & Carbonara. The only frustration I had was an assumed 18% gratuity. Our waitress was great and I would have tipped more, but I am not one for adding a tax to the end of someone's bill. I realize this is one individual's principles, but if you want to ensure your staff is paid appropriately then build it into the price instead of passing it off to the customer. read more

The food was wonderful and the portions were perfect. The wait staff were warm, knowledgeable, and seemed truly interested in making sure I was happy. I found great vegan choices even though that is not their focus. Beautiful evening. Can't wait to take friends there. read more

Fantastic, locally-sourced, fresh food! The quality of everything I try from here is top notch! The service is friendly and consistently good. Prices are a bit higher than other restaurants in the area and the tip is automatically included to support a living wage for servers (how great is that?) - so I tend to come here for happy hour or a nice night out. I especially love that they have a kids menu item with veggies in it (eventhough my kids won't eat veggies it's still good to offer them veggies). I love the Little Gem Salad, focaccia bread, and zucchini fries. The menu rotates so it may be different when you dine here. Great gem of a restaurant in the neighborhood! read more

Everything was homemade and taste amazing! Staff was friendly. Slight expensive for a family diner..... but a great choice for a date night!

This is one of the best restaurants in town! I have been there 5 times and each and every time it has been delicious. All the pasta, the bread and the cheese are made from scratch in house. It's so flavorful and so fresh it's incredible! If you haven't tried yet, you must get there... read more

After too long of a wait, I finally planned a dinner with friends at L'Oca D'Oro. I've been very impressed with the operational values and philosophy, and I've been eager to dine here, but just hadn't organized to go until tonight. What I loved: (5 stars) * Visual aesthetic * Fair wage for all employees regardless of whether front of house or back of house * Locally sourced fresh ingredients * Made in house from scratch for everything they can * Absolute deliciousness of the food What kind of made me not want to come back: (1 star) * Noise level - I had read about it in other reviews, but the GM had responded that additional noise dampening had been installed. It's not enough. * Waiting 15 minutes between being seated and meeting anyone that we might be able to order from. * Meeting our waitress and then her taking off before answering any questions, or taking a drink or appetizer order. o There was an issue with one person at our table having an out of date menu, and we were under the impression that our waitress was off to find a replacement menu and would return immediately. * Waiting another 15 minutes before the waitress showed up again (without any replacement menu) to take our initial order. * Never receiving one of our appetizers. * Telling our servers as our main courses arrived that we never received the appetizer we ordered. * The waitress reappearing while we were eating our main courses and telling us that she had never heard the order (back to my first point about the noise level), hadn't written it down, but it was being expedited in the kitchen now without giving us the opportunity to say we were no longer interested. * Being charged for said appetizer, where in similar situations at other restaurants a server misstep like that would be comped. * Having no way to monetarily signal displeasure with the service since 20% service charge was mandatory. * Becoming disillusioned that standard wages in service industry can work. The food here really was excellent. I love the concept of what they are trying to do, but our experience with service was one of the worst I've had in quite a long time and made me a bit embarrassed that this had been my choice for a night out with friends. read more

This place has very exciting food ideas and flavor combos. The Italian food is locally sourced and they try to give the wait staff a living wage. They take an automatic 20 percent which i am okay with. I would give 5 stars but I got grifted by the waitstaff. Three of us went to eat there and we split the bill with the tip included. My friends paid their portion with the tip with cash. I also paid my tip with cash and added cash for part of an extra between us which also went into the cash pile to pay the bill. I asked to pay the balance on the card which should have been about $60. The waitress brought back the bill which was for a third of the total bill and an extra 20 percent. So she got the bill plus tip of $66 plus the balance and another $60 in tip. Guess that I should have checked more closely. The problem now is that even though the food is excellent I don't want to go back. Really have been struggling with wanting to write the review. This happened May 21st. read more

L'Oca d'Oro was a wonderful experience! My son and I had a fabulous dinner. I started with a very nice old fashioned, not particularly Italian, but well done. We shared their meat and cheese plate to start and the flavor adventure took off! The entrees continued to raised the flavor bar. My son ordered the Casarecce and I had the Chicken Milanesa. I loved my dish but the Cararecce was mind blowing. We finished with their gelato that ruined ice cream for me it was so good. Their philosophy of using locally sourced ingredients was well executed, the flavor showed through at every stage from the fresh baked bread, to the cured meats and homemeade sausage to the gelato. The only thing that overshadowed the amazing food was the impeccable service by staff who seemed to get great pleasure from seeing their dining guest experience the meal! Well done folks, well done. Took the wife out to L'Oca d'Oro for her birthday a week ago while her best friend was in town after researching restaurants for a special occasion. We made reservations for 7:30 on a Saturday and were promptly seated when we arrived. Server came by after a bit and took our drink orders, normal stuff, beer for me and wine for the ladies. After about 15 minutes, she came back and took our appetizer and entree orders. Appetizers came out relatively quickly and were DELICIOUS. Foccacia and honey butter were delightful, fried zucchini was piping hot and crisp, charcuterie plate hit the spot. After we were done with our appetizers, we were definitely excited for the 2 pastas and the eggplant parmesan we ordered, so we sat there patiently waiting for what we thought would be equally amazing entrees to the appetizers. And waited. And waited some more. After about 40 minutes, the eggplant parmesan arrived. Unfortunately since it arrived so late, the appetizers had already settled in our stomachs so our appetites weren't so eager anymore. Nonetheless, wife's friend and I dug in to see how it was. It was okay-ish....not bad, but definitely not mind blowing. 20 minutes after that, the two pasta dishes arrived. Everyone at the table was pretty much sated (as would happen if you ate appetizers and a single entree and within a span of an hour). Again, we decided to soldier on and try it out and all I can say is.....yikes. The first pasta, the Cassarecce, actually wasn't terrible. I ate a few bites and enjoyed it, but unlike what the server said when my wife asked if it was spicy (and was told no), it had red pepper flakes on it so it definitely had a kick. I'm a fan of spicy so it wasn't a problem for me, but I ordered it as a shareable. The second pasta, the tagliatelle, was absolutely terrible. It came out extremely al dente and tasted like someone accidentally mixed sugar into it. It has sweet peppers in it for the Ragu, but I LOVE sweet peppers and these tasted more like peppers dipped into cane sugar. Definitely no from all 3 parties. To cap it off for the wife's birthday, we decided to get a Tiramisu. Luckily, unlike the entrees, it was absolutely delicious and we finished it, so points for that. We ultimately ended up leaving the restaurant right after eating the tiramisu, which was at about 10:05 pm when the restaurant had technically shut down. That's 2 hours and 35 minutes spent at the restaurant, which unless you're doing a full tasting menu, is WAY too long. I don't think our server was to blame, honestly, because the entrees were definitely warm-to-hot when they got to the table, which means they weren't sitting out for a while. I'm guessing it was on the kitchen staff, but would've been nice for the server to acknowledge that it was over an hour between the last appetizer and 2 out of 3 of our entrees. Since Yelp doesn't allow for 2.5 stars, I ultimately have to rate it a 3 out of 5 - the appetizers and tiramisu were great, but service was extremely slow and the entrees were pretty bad. Couple that with the above average prices (which makes sense for a nicer restaurant) and the 20% mandatory gratuity, and there's no way I can justify anything higher than that. I paid more than what I would pay at Uchi/Uchiko for worse service and food, so definitely not planning to go back. If I do, it'll only be for the appetizers. read more

This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. First of all - let me say that I'm a convert in the most unconventional of ways. I'm still not the biggest fan of L'Oca d'Oro's food, or it's price-points. I have been converted to their commitment to service and to their community. My love/hate relationship began with a pretty terrible experience with an equally scathing review. I was contacted by the owner almost immediately - which in my experience has never happened. The owner thanked my for my patronage and asked some pointed questions about our night. I responded and was thanked again for my input. I thought that was that until I received several hate-filled emails that can't be written about publicly without breaking several of yelp's public decency rules. I was understandably unnerved and contacted the owner. It was Adam's (the owner's) kind response and subsequent posting on my behalf that led me to visit L'Oca d'ora again. I thought "Man, if the people running this place are so committed to getting customer service right, they have to be on track to making this restaurant into something special". I think they're definitely on track. Could the food be better? Yes. Could the service be improved? Yes. Did we have an awesome time on our second visit? Most definitely, yes. Oh, and try the Eggplant, butter dippy thing. It is THE BEST. My apologies to the owners, I thought this review had been posted long ago and has a remained a draft for some time. read more

In a city that has a lot of great brunch spots, I am always looking to find something new and delicious. Reading over the menu sparked my interest (especially the melon mimosas and rabbit sausage), because it strayed away from the typical Italian menus that you find in the US. I had expected it to be busy, so I met up with some friends for Brunch early. I went 30 minutes after they opened and was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't a line or wait. It had a laid back modern European/American/Austin feel. I ended up ordering the Melon mimosa, the full Italian, and a machiato. The eggs we cooked to perfection, and the house made bacon was delicious, and everything else was amazing! I love traditional European breakfasts, and L'oca D'oros rendition was nothing short of fantastic! Very excited to have found this place and can't wait to go back! read more

I recently went to L'Oca d'Oro for a weekday happy hour. The upside, I will describe below. The downside is that I have been missing out on this place for the last year. I was greeted by Adam, who was charming and immediately sat us in the sunlight-filled open dining room. The space was natural, bright, and inviting. And, I look forward to watching as the vines grow above on the high ceilings. We started out with a "Lake Como" - which was rum, juniper cordial, w rosemary syrup, which was delightful and well worth the $6 hh price and a glass of dry Rose. The "Bread Plate" with cultured (in-house) citrus butter was the beginning of many highlights to come - and a steal at $2.50. (I later jokingly asked our server if I could get a tub of that butter to go - and he offered to oblige. My better judgement and self-control declined.) We ordered the fresh Mozzarella, Roasted Tecolote Farm Nantes Carrots (http://tecolotefarm.net/), (in-house) Smoked Brisket Meatballs, & Ricotta Gnocchi with Beet puree & Pistachio Relish. It's been almost a week and I am still thinking about that Mozzarella (with wild dewberry jam). I have been ambitious in the past and tried to make my own Mozzarella and have enjoyed it at Bufalina before.. but THIS. The bite! The flavor! I had completely forgotten about the grilled bread that accompanied it, until the end. I may or may not have been a savage and put the remaining triangle in my purse. Who knows? The Ricotta Gnocchi had really stuk out to us on the menu, and it did not disappoint. I could seriously order just that and a glass of wine and call it a night. I say that with a bit of jest as I fully intend on trying the Lasagna Bolognese & grilled zucchini on my next visit (which can't happen soon enough). Overall, we were delighted by our experience. It was comforting to see a place that has organically become a neighborhood spot in the Mueller development, without it feeling like I was in a development (did I mention the high ceilings and natural light?). There were (well behaved) families, couples celebrating, and singular diners among us, all having a good time. Lastly, I would like to commend the owners on their fair wage gratuity policy. As someone who has previously worked in the service industry, I have experienced the pros and cons of fine dining, first hand. Often times, the server is rewarded and the kitchen staff works endless hours for minimal pay. I gladly support a system that benefits ALL employees and respect this trend of thoughtful restaurant owners. read more

The secret is butter...lots of butter. And also fresh ingredients with strong flavors! I have relished every pasta dish I've had here. In particular I still fantasize about this one that had sausage and lemon. They recommend ordering multiple plates, but the portion sizes are more generous than at a lot of places around this price point. We have always been plenty full after sharing two pastas for the two of us. Austin has a shortage of great pasta and L'Oca d'Oro is a gem! read more

Enjoyed a belated birthday dinner at one of our favorite places and Adam and the entire staff hit the ball out of the park (it is baseball season after all). For us, dining should be a great experience, whether a diner or fine dining establishment. L'Oca d'Oro is definitely the latter. It starts with the greeting and feeling like we're family, smiles cordiality and responsive treatment. For the first time, we seriously considered the pasta tasting menu (the price was $10 less than the last time we had checked), especially because gnocchi was one of the items. Every item was unique and the progression of pastas built to a crescendo of flavors. The gnocchi was the penultimate selection and was unlike any gnocchi I had ever enjoyed. With Passover upon us, I thought of the Hebrew song "dayenu", meaning it would have been enough. Yes, I would've been satisfied if the gnocchi was the last course, but there was one more, the finale of pastas (dessert is included). This pasta was an agnolotti in a mushroom purée, appropriately adorned with other flavors, and that doesn't begin to describe the lusciousness of the dish. Fortunately the pace of each dish was deliberate allowing us to rest before the dessert, a cannoli ice cream sundae with macerated strawberries and various gelatos, and a single candle for my birthday. I know that I've been a bit verbose but I can't help express enough my joy and gratitude for an amazing dining experience. I hope y'all get an opportunity to enjoy L'Oca d'Oro read more

Unbelievably cool experience with an outstanding meal and incredibly knowledgeable staff. We came here with my husband and parents for Father's Day. Since it was Sunday we found free street parking. This restaurant is in the Meuller Town Center area which has many restaurants and stores in the area and is continuing to be heavily developed. The space is very bright and airy. The decor is casual. There is a patio for eating outside if the weather permits. There is a nice bar area where you can sit and order a drink or a bite during their happy hour which happens every day. We started with the fried zucchini and cucumber salad. Both were delicious! The salad had chickpeas, onions, arugula. The fried zucchini came with a delicious aioli sauce. For our main courses, each person ordered their own pasta dish. I ordered the rigatoni ala Norma. The eggplant in the pasta was delicious, almost sweet. The sauce was so rich and creamy. We did see some tables ordering pasta to serve family style, which would be nice if you do like to share (my husband does not). The service is fine, everyone was attentive and prompt. The restaurant adds a 20% service charge to every bill no matter party size. read more
