I bought a sweater from L.L. Bean to wear on Christmas, and I was not looking for an Ugly Christmas Sweater, but ugly is what I got. Ugly in terms of the quality of the material, the awkward fit and the sky-high price for what is without question the cheapest piece of clothing I have ever encountered. I could not even wear this worthless sweater for half a day because the fit was so uncomfortable. No, it was not sized wrong. It fit my torso fine. But the sleeves were so short and tight that they were cutting off circulation to my arms. And I have skinny arms. This is a quality issue. L.L. Bean sells dirt-cheap quality clothing at high-caliber department store prices. It is a total ripoff. You would be much better served going to an actual department store or even Amazon for your clothing needs. read more

First time at LL Bean store. I came here with nephew, who needed boots for the winter... the staff member was very friendly and engaging in assisting selecting the perfect boot. I love that they had plenty of seats in the store, because they were my friend while I waited for my nephew to make his selection. After going through 5 different pairs and 40 minutes later, he found the "perfect pair" lol. The service was great, that would bring me back to the store. read more

The sizes are terrible. They're random-either super small or super fat. When you go to look for things like pants they're not organized and don't have stickers with the sizes so you have to turn the stuff upside down looking for what you need and then the sizes are completely random and disorganized. When you approach the sales reps they encourage you to just go buy it online and then return it instore-or return it with a $6.50 shipping fee. The sizes are awful. An xl looks like you're swimming in the shirt and the regular shirts are basically untucked type shirts, so you have to try on all the tall shirts to find out if those fit. The whole thing is a mess and they really go out of their way with sizes, prices, the way it's organized to make you really waste a lot of time and money. Complete fail. read more

Pleasant shopping experience. I went to several stores to look for a winter coat and the young (20s) salespeople wouldn't talk to or even look at the customers. But at this store I noticed most of the salespeople were older (40-50s) and every one of them did not let a customer pass by them without greeting them and offering to help. The cashiers kept a friendly, efficient demeanor despite the long line of people returning items. It was easy to look at the various coats and try them on compared to the other places with crammed racks close together and too many styles hung up out of reach. Followed around and watched like a hawk while Christmas shopping. An old woman with short hair was tailing me everywhere. At first I was talking to her and she was somewhat helpful. I told her I was basically doing reconnaissance for my mother. Taking snapshots with my phone and sending them to her for approval. The woman wasn't just following me, she was following me closely. Every time I turned around she was there. It was really getting on my nerves. That was when I realized what was going on. I went to the bathroom and she was actually standing there waiting for me when I came out. Really? My last lingering doubt was gone after that and I was beginning to feel insulted. So, just for fun I walked her in one big circle around the store just to watch this ridiculous woman try to keep up, yet act casual so as to not blow her cover as I strung her along. I was probably being petty doing that, but whatever. After completing the circle I just stopped and stood there for a moment. She broke the awkward silence by asking if I was going to buy some item that I asked her about earlier. I told her I'm not going to buy anything. Then asked, "What did I do? Why are you following me?" She played dumb saying she was just doing her job folding clothes. I just said "No, you're not", then walked out the store. read more

I love this store even more after kayaking with them last weekend. For $20, they put 14 people in a nice air conditioned bus and drove us to the North Shore Channel. Our 2 guides, Kevin and Matthew, outfitted everyone, gave us some basic instruction and stretches and launched us into the water. We did a 2-1/2 mile kayak for about an hour and a half before the bus driver took us back to the store. It was amazing and they all work like a well-oiled machine. After the adventure we did a little shopping since they gave us a 10% off coupon, and everyone was really friendly and very helpful. I will definitely be back to shop with them and kayak with them again. read more

This is purely a rating of the store itself. LL Bean in general (i.e. the website) gets a 5 star rating. I came here to look for a bag and for "bean boots" near the beginning of the season (late October-ish). They had no women's boots that I could see, and the employees never even acknowledged me and I only saw one person the entire time so it was hard to ask for help. The store itself seems a bit small, and thus I'm sure stock is limited. That said, I'll give them another shot. I still haven't ordered the boots because I'm not sure on sizing (although I believe they do free returns so it doesn't matter if I guess incorrectly). I do love their lifetime guarantee, and they make a quality product. I have a tote bag from here I bought in 2006 or 2007 and aside from some gunk on the side that I spilled on it, there's no signs of wear (and I use that beast every day). Unfortunately they no longer sell this particular bag on the website, which makes me sad because I'd love another one in a different color. Oh well. read more

I have been a fan of LL Bean for over 5 years now. I love their jackets, and sweaters. My first Parka Winter jacket was given to me in December 08 I believe. I used the jacket till about December 2011. I went to the Skokie location, and said how it had lost it's water proof layer, and wasn't retaining heat as well as when I first bought it. I had washed it according to the instructions. They took the jacket, and put a certain amount as store credit. I was happy to buy myself a new one :) Just this Dec I had bought a blue fleece lined sweater from them. This weekend I noticed that some of the lining in the zipper had come loose near the neck area. Since they still carried the sweater they ordered me a new one, and I can expect it my Monday at the latest :) Your prices are a bit high, but well worth it. I love you LL Bean read more

This review is for online ordering. I ordered slippers costing $89.00. I was charged $94.56 with tax. I received an email after delivery stating that my total was $178.00. That I had been charged $94.56 and an additional $89.00 would be charged. I chatted online with LLBean customer service to enquire why I had a balance and they told me to call my credit card company! That is not customer service, that's passing the buck! I suppose I should have gone to the store. read more

I'm not the most outdoorsy person. Actual truthfully my idea of "camping" is at a Lake House in the woods. (Yay for plumbing and beds!) I think that may change because LL Bean has such cool things that make me actually want to try out actual camping. I definitely love how the company stands by their product and I can attest to the quality of their clothes. I've purchased a few flannel shirts and the flannel is ACTUALLY FLANNEL- none of that cheapy, thin cotton stuff. The service at the Old Orchard LL Bean has always been wonderful. I've never had to wait in line and the associates not only know what they are doing- they are happy and always super helpful. The staff was absolutely magnificent. The woman working upstairs in women's clothing was so helpful in finding colors and sizes for base layers. Angry, sad and disappointed. I may need therapy... I paid a lot for my snow boots thinking LL Bean knows snow. Truth is, it's just Chinese-made crap. I had these shoes two years...wearing them less than 5 times and walking less than 10 miles total. Apparently the triple stitching is just cosmetic. The shoes literally came unglued. After L.L. Bean refused my request to return as defective, I went to buy Merrill boots as a replacement while I was in the store. Then, I thought otherwise. Merrill deserves my business directly- not a markup from Mr Bean. LL Bean has lost a customer for life and now REI is my only outfitter for my active lifestyle. read more

Visited the store with a broken duffle bag (Made in Vietnam). Clerk initially said no on the return due to wear and tear. I insist the bag wouldn't look so worn if they didn't use such cheap material and sweatshop labor. Feeling deflated saddened by their sudden reversal on the returns policy that made them such a fan favorite, I began walking out the door. I then asked to speak with a manager, and asked if she could at least replace just the broken buckle. Manager R. said she could replace the whole bag. Now that's the service I'm used to, considering the tens of thousands of dollars I've spent with this brand over the decades, it's the least they could do. I lucked out this time with a manager that still had common sense not to turn away a customer who was dressed head-to-toe in LL Bean. It's not like I bought this imported crap from a garage sale or a thrift store...I received my first pair of Maine Hunting Shoes when I was 5, and have loved the company ever since. Now, not so much. No sense in overpaying for sweatshop produced products so LL Bean can go all corporate and rip off their best customers. So yeah I lucked out this time, but when I don't luck out the next time because of this perverted anti-customer narrative that LL Bean has written, and I'm stuck with a $140 bag that breaks--I'll just buy a cheaper bag at Costco. Mark this as the beginning of the end for this company. They killed overnight shipping. They've launched the failed Signature line for millennials that's been a total disaster, they've doubled down on brick & mortar retail stores and now they've alienated their best customers by flip flopping on their 90 year old return policy. read more

We set out to buy boots for our kids, checked availability online and we got what wanted and realized although our son was fitting in a size 5 boot,he really needed size 6. Martha in customer care checked inventory and found they didnt have his size, found a pair in Minnesota. Its subzero temps this week and i really wanted the kids to be dressed appropriately. I asked her can we buy the current pair and return it once we get our order in the mail from Minnesota, she checked with the manager and we were good to go. How often does that happen?? L.L. Bean is one of my favorite catalogs and/or clothing brands. I have worn it for a long time and own three pairs of L.L. Bean boots. I knew there was one in Skokie and insisted on stopping there since I had never been to one of their stores. They store was great! They had a large selection of their product line on display. I got to look at many things I've only ever seen online. They have free Wi-Fi. They had the entire line of L.L. Bean boots. I took a pile of things into the dressing room and was able to pick up a few things. My boyfriend found a shirt he liked but the sleeves were too short and one of the salespeople was able to find the same shirt for him in a different cut but in the tall so it was long enough. I "discovered" L.L. Bean the end of last year when I was looking for a pair of winter boots that would last. Stumbling upon the unbelievable quality and repairability of the Bean Boots, I ordered a pair online. After that I ordered a plus-size outerwear vest, which fit perfectly. For Christmas, I received flannel pajamas, suede slippers, and a wool peacoat (all plus-sized) from llbean.com. All fit perfectly and are very high quality. Most recently, I ordered a spring utility jacket which looks great and has some fine details missing from cheaper brands. I love llbean.com. I have been in this retail store twice. Once to exchange my bean boots, which were too large, and once while I was doing Christmas shopping. The good: The store is unique, outdoorsy, and nicely laid out. L.L. Bean is second to no other in quality of products as well as exceptional product guarantee. They give outdoor classes, and I once saw a boyscout group learning a skill in store together. The bad: the store has no plus sizes. I understand many stores decline to add plus sizes to their retail stores--old navy, for example. You can guess my feelings about that. Also, their prices are high. This is not a source of fast, cheap clothing. You are paying for quality and US workers, so take the prices as you will. Overall, if you are shopping for shoes or are in the regular size range, use this store for high quality items that will last for years. If you are plus sizes, stick with llbean.com, but you'll be happy with your purchases. read more

I happened to be at Old Orchard today and noticed that they just opened their doors. The store is even going to be open 24 hours through the weekend with live music and giveaways after 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. I'm not crazy about their stuff. I liked the store because it was clean and very orderly but the service suck*d. I literaly walked around for 10 minutes looking for a sweater and not one sales person bother to ask if I needed any help. The thing that killed me was that they (the sales people) were asking everyone else around me, it was like I had a disease or something. I finally had to ask someone to look in the back for my sweater and that's when I got the look, like I was taking her away from something important. I just turned around and told my husband to order my stuff online. The funny thing was I didn't have this problem at the store out in South Barrington, which was just fine for me. The woman with short grey hair in the shoe department is terrible. Absolutely incompetent. Didn't accurately measure my kids feet. Took a break while"helping" us. She refused to give a third sized pair of shoes. She didn't understand that I was buying for my twin boys although they were both sitting in front of her barefoot and told us we needed to try what she gave us before she would get anything else. Finally after helping a customer or two in between and 15 minutes later she gave me the correct size. When I mentioned on check out that the shoe department was a bit ridiculous, the woman at check out was very nice. Lucky we made it to check out. The worst shopping experience of my life. The rudest & most ignorant saleswoman ever. I waited almost 30 minutes to ask this woman for a pair of boots in a 10 or 11. I was unsure of size because I've heard LL Bean boots run large. She went in the back while I waited another 20 minutes for her to return only to walk past me muttering "nothing in your size"". I was left standing there with boot in hand. Not even asked if I'd like to try another style or something similar. We were excited to find a somewhat close LL Bean store and went an hour out of our way just to go to there. What a horrible experience!! LL Bean, you need to screen your employees better. When I read the reviews for this store, I thought that they must be exaggerated, and I headed there to purchase a few tote bags. I found the tote bags when I walked in, but the selection was paltry. I waited for about 10 minutes, wondering around the info desk near the bags and no staff members approached. I walked further through the store and I finally found someone to ask for help ordering/monogramming bags. I got about 4 words out before he cut me off, grunted and pointed towards the racks of tote bags in the front and walked away. Another staff member was nearby but said that he didn't know much about the bags and would find someone to help. I waited about 5 more minutes and no one came to help. I ended up leaving and ordering what I needed online. I love L.L. Bean products, and that's the only reason I bumped this review to 2 stars. The customer service wasn't even worth 1 star. read more

Friendly, patient, and knowledgeable staff - the trifecta of customer service. I received a beautiful long jacket from there as a gift a few years ago. I always had problems with the zipper. I brought it back to the store, today (three years later) and was fortunate to be assisted by Rich. Rich took the jacket and put it on the counter and said, "let me show you how to zip the coat." At first I was offended but then I realized he was being very helpful. The zipper worked. He tried it three times and handed it off to me and said I could definitely return it but the zipper was fine. I tried and the double zipper worked. I was thrilled. So thrilled that I bought a much -needed spring jacket that was on sale, too. Very pleased. read more

I went to the doctor yesterday and he said I have Plantar Fasciitis. He said get a second pair for the house. Not good to be bare feet. So I went to llbean today skokie il old orchard. The lady was very helpful. These are the best. The heel does slip a little but its really comfortable. And my 9 medium is good. 8.5 is too tight. So the review that said order down is incorrect. Anyhow these are not good for plantar faciitis as the other review said. I had to remove the insole it came with and buy the llbean generic insole that is grey on top and green on the bottom. And coupled with a thick sock and my other over the counter sofsole orthotics. The orange ones made for plantar fasciitis. But anyhow it is really comfortable. And the black generic llbean soles the shoes came with worked for my other shoes that I accidently threw out the orthotics. The orange super feet I got before was no good. But the generic ones work. So not a waste. Over good purchase and on sale for 54 dollars. read more

The quality has gone down a lot since their warranties changed. They also don't honor the the return policy on the items that were purchased before the warranty change. Terrible service and selection. My cousin and I came here for winter boots and the staff would not even speak with us to get pairs to try on. We kept asking to be helped, only to be ignored. Had a bad experience here with my husband recently which has never been the case in past years. Two out of the three employees who assisted us were nice, however our initial contact with an elderly woman in the shoe/boot section was disturbing. For every comment or phrase my husband would utter after she pulled out the two sizes from the back storeroom,, the woman would talk to him like he was an imbecile. Clearly she was not eager to be helpful, we believe she was biased. He eventually dismissed her, told her he didn't need her help, and let her know she was being rude. It's Friday morning 3/9/18 a little after 10:30. I am browsing clothing items in the Men's Department of the Skokie store. Two sales associates (women, mid to late 40s I'd guess) are lounging against a display table, having a conversation. Neither one takes any notice of me. For several minutes I walk from one display to another looking at garments. I am the only customer. The women continue their conversation, and never once look up or ask "Can I help you with anything?"--not even when I'm at the very table they're leaning against! There are sweaters I liked on another table, but not in my size. I go back and pick one up. Holding it in front of me, I walk straight toward one of the women, staring her right in the face. I can tell that she sees me coming, but instead of greeting me in any way, she just keeps talking to her colleague. I have to interrupt in order to ask "Do you have this in a large?" She grudgingly breaks off her chat and calls another store where they have what I want, then hands me the phone to complete the transaction myself. When I hang up, I expect to find her standing there and offering some pleasantry like "Did you get everything worked out?" But no, she has left the floor and is nowhere to be seen. In the end, the sweater is delivered to my home, and I'm happy with it. But what I want to know is how did these two women get their jobs and how do they keep them? They show no interest in assisting customers or helping their employer make a sale. Common courtesy and a desire to be useful are simply not in their makeup. Neither is "doing the job." It seems they are only there to socialize with each other and draw a paycheck at week's end. Why would a business dream of letting such people be the face it presents to the public? read more

I bought a pair of Chippewa boots from them very recently and the shoe selection is outstanding. Although I wouldn't shop for dress shoes from these guys. Anyway, the staff is super cool and not up in your face. This isn't like shopping at Nordstrom, where the management pressures the associates to pander to you. Totally unpretentious. They handed me the size I requested and installed the laces for me. Afterward, I was left alone to stroll around the store's hard surface. I skipped and did jumping jacks to ascertain the comfort level of the footwear. Despite it being a busy Saturday afternoon, the associates were very well composed. read more

I have mixed feelings about this location. The product is plentiful and good quality, but the staff could be a little more inviting. On several occasions I've walked through the door with a greeter present and didn't get so much as a head nod. When browsing I'll encounter many staff members scattered through the store and I still don't receive any acknowledgement. On the other hand I have had great interactions with the cashiers. Maybe they're happy I'm spending money? At least they're doing their job and keeping the store looking beautiful and spotless. read more
