I have come here very sporadically over the last three years. I have always gotten my haircut and or colored by Krista. She's phenomenal and has given me some of the best haircuts of my life. Always involving some layers or side swept longer bangs. I love Aveda products, I love the way the salon smells. I love getting my Aveda tea. She was also able to spontaneously get my 17-year-old daughter in for an appointment the same day I've got my haircut last week and my daughter's hair was transformed. I can't speak for the other stylists, but this is definitely one of my happy places. read more

Got my hair done w Kelsey, I love my hair and have gotten so many compliments! I like that I was able to get a price quote to get a service in my price range with no surprises. The receptionist was so sweet, and the ambiance was great! Kelsey also had a student with her, and you are definitely able to get a vibe of someone based on how they treat a student/trainee, and Kelsey was super nice and informative and explained everything to her which was awesome. I booked a keratin treatment and hair cut. I have been getting blow outs for many years and have had great success with it being straight, smooth and silky. THIS was not. My hair was still curly and frizzy and the cut had to be redone because the cut had very hard edges. The redo on the cut was wonderful but the manager said the Keratin treatment worked. My curly frizzy hair says otherwise. They were not willing to redo my hair (I wasn't asking for a refund of the VERY expensive treatment) . I would not recommend this salon. read more

This salon is amazing!! The front desk staff is always warm and welcoming. Van does my new growth touch up which is a bleach and tone and she does a marvelous job! I have healthy blonde hair with no bands or breakage! She is also a really grey hair cutter! I also enjoy having facials Rachelle! She is very knowledgeable about skincare. Also 10/10 on the covid precautions. Everyone is wearing a mask and sanitizing everything between other clients. I feel safe and excited everytime I have a service here. I at first loved this place was going here for about a year now I always saw Krista she is amazing ! I really wanted a hair cut and Krista was booked out , but they were able to get me in with someone named Abigail . And let me tell you she did the most horrible job ever! My hair cut is completely disaster uneven and the front is so ugly I don't know what she was trying to do . I would not recommend going to her at all now I have to wait for my hair to grow out ! Worse hair cut in my life . I had to go to another salon and try to get it fixed and that salon said as well they were getting girls from the same location and girl to fix their hair . I moved here to Reno from the Bay Area about 2 years ago and have yet to find a hairstylist that I wanted to go to, so I started just cutting my own hair. I decided I wanted to treat myself and go get pampered. I chose this Salon after finding Rebecca's Instagram page and falling in love with her work! I was a little scared at first as I've never dyed my hair before, and I really wanted to add some highlights. She took such great care of me and now I don't think I'll trust anyone else with my hair! She cut and dyed my hair exactly how I wanted it, and styled it to perfection before the end of my appointment. L'essence is also an extremely homey salon with tons of windows, plants, and seating thats not so close next to another client. They also take Covid precautions seriously here so I like that as well. I think the only downfall is that they are pretty pricey depending on what you get done, but it is definitely worth the money!! read more

The online booking process for this salon could not have been easier and the entire process of coming in and getting checked in went so easy. I got a manicure with Dhalia and she really took care of me. I work in a kitchen and my hands and nails can get a little rough. But she took the time to perfectly shape and polish all of my nails and kept checking in with me about the shape and style I wanted to make sure I left with exactly what I wanted. She was so professional and sweet and I would definitely come back to her to get my hands back into shape after being so rough on them at work. read more

I get my nails done by Jodi here! She does a wonderful job and she is just such a sweetheart! I came here in desperate need of someone who knew what the heck they were doing! My nails had been severely damaged by a sub standard nail shop, you know the kind I'm referring to, for there are many and nobody inside them speaks english...anyway, I came here and she rescued and saved my nail beds, and even made them stronger over time. I'll never go anywhere else...as long as Jodi remains here!! It is pricey compared to the other types of places I mentioned however, that is due to the sheer quality of work and products being used! Not to mention, they offer you a free glass of wine while they work, and after your nails are done, they massage cuticles with cuticle oil and your arms and hands with lotion and afterwards , your hands will thank you! If you are looking for a classy experience with a sassy and well-versed hairdresser, request an appointment with Nikki Cimino! She gave me some bangin' bangs last I saw her. Her previous training and work in San Fran has given her an extra edge in Reno, and she is actively involved in furthering her education by attending seminars and workshops. L'essence will provide you with an upscale atmosphere, a complimentary glass of wine, pretty views with lots of natural sunlight, and good company. I'm partial to Nikki and her vivacious personality, and I have loved her haircuts as well as her advice for keeping my hair healthy between visits. She typically recommends Aveda products, and I am always sent home with small samplers for my skin or hair. I always appreciate a non-forceful sales pitch for products, as I don't use many of those at home. I paid $60 for a cut after a friend's referral, and women's cuts generally run around $70. You NEED Jessica and her salon in your life. When we moved here I was desperate to find a good hair stylist. I stumbled upon L'essence by talking to one of the stylists at a pop up event we were doing and I loved the concept that they all help one another out. I reached out and asked for a blonde specialist because as any blonde knows the right hair stylist is crucial if you have a specific blonde you're going after. We moved from SoCal, I had been flying back and forth to get my hair done by my stylist there and that's just not sustainable, I was so scared to find someone new especially since I had been with that stylist for years. I reached out through instagram and they responded almost immediately which was amazing. Within two days I had an appointment and hope that I could potentially have found my stylist. Next week I meet Jessica, not only is she the owner but she is the sweetest human being but she is ALSO an amazing colorist. She listened to what I wanted and made sure that the way she went about roots and color would leave me happy. I was amazed but skeptical, but the grow out was beautiful and looked natural and that's all a blondie can ask for! I've been going to her for about a year now, maybe more, and I am as happy as can be. We even play around with colors once in a while which requires a ton of trust. She does extensions as well and they're flawless. Jessica truly knows how to interpret your vision into reality and I am so grateful I found her. You will NOT be disappointed when you go to L'essence. All the girls there are so nice and sweet and the environment is light and beautiful/calming. So I scheduled a next day appt with Lauren bc she had an opening for partial highlights. I already had placed a couple random highlights in my hair bc im a hot mess like that. She didnt even say a word bc shes so classy! I had some box dye in my hair already-I know hairdressers hate that but Lauren was so chill. My hair turned out sooooo pretty. NOT WORTH IT!! came here to get a haircut about 5 weeks ago when I was unable to find any other places to do it. The service was okay, nothing over the top but not bad either. I came for a simple trim and asked for about 2-3 inches cut just to get some of the damage off. I got maybe less that an inch off and was given the option of a treatment that was supposed to "leave your hair feeling silky and better than ever" I was charged $70.00 for a trim that I could have done better myself and for two spritz of "treatment" that I could have purchased at Walmart. A TOTAL RIP OFF!!! I called the next day to ask about if there was anything they could do, they told me that the person who would be able to help me wasn't there and to call vack, which i did... I called again on Sunday and they were closed.. I finally was able to get a hold of them about 2 weeks later and she told me that it had been too long and I needed to speak with someone who still wasn't there at the moment. She called me back and left me a voice-mail asking to call her back, which I did. Called back the very next day and AGAIN she wasn't there... they gave me a phone number of another salon that she would be at, I called and absolutely no answer . Called once again and again she wasn't there. Finally I left a message asking her to call me back,which she did. Called me back to let me know there was nothing they could do due to the fact that it had been about five weeks and so much time has passed. They didn't help me despite the fact that I had been calling and it was THEIR FAULT that so much time had passed, NOT MINE! DON'T GO HERE! IT IS NOT WORTH THE TIME AND/OR MONEY! Alley is not only professional, she's friendly and just amazing at working her magic hair wand on my hair. I have crazy Polynesian hair and after my first visit to her, my hair was transformed. I love the suggestions along with the Aveda product recommendations she gave me and with every visit she gives me a step by step consultation, so I know what to expect. I love this salon! I moved to Reno 6 months ago and L'essence is the first salon I tried out for my hair. I was extremely nervous because in the last year at my previous location (Phoenix) I had tried three different hair stylets and had bad experiences. I was fortunate enough to be scheduled with Aly who, after a wonderful consultation, gave me the best haircut of my life! I have had long hair for the last 3 years and felt it was getting "dumpy". She revitalized my cut and gave me "Kate Middleton mixed with a VS Angel" hair. (Yeah, really.) I'm now back getting color for the first time in forever- forever because I normally don't trust anyone enough to do that much to my hair! I trust Aly and the salon and LOVE my color. Needless to say, if you are looking for a stylist this is the place to go. I got a gel manicure here once and unfortunately did not love it. It chipped within the first week and was around $50 for just one solid gel color. I don't let my nail experience ruin this salon though and you shouldn't either. Had unfortunately a pretty bad experience today. I came in wanting baby lights/ a more natural toner used on my roots after being heavily highlighted, and left with half my head totally brunette with a red tint. Even Krista, who coloured my hair, was surprised that it turned out much darker and picked up red she hadn't expected. I tried to respond in a kind manner, and I totally understand that sometimes the results aren't as everyone hopes for- but what I was totally shocked and disappointed by was the completely rude and unprofessional response. She refused to put a new toner on it/ add a few foils to even it out, wanted to pass me on to someone else, and then quickly said, "how about we just call it a day and you could go somewhere else to fix it." I was later offered to come in the next day for it to be fixed (after insisting)- but again, 0 flexibility with timing and with an extremely rude attitude. We're all just human and at the end of the day, "its just hair"- but I don't think there's any excuse at all for rude behaviour towards customers (or just people in general!). I was really looking forward to this appointment and generally very disappointed by the whole thing. read more

This is one of my favorite places in town to indulge myself. The staff are always so friendly, and they take great care of their customers, especially returning or frequent ones. I just had my hair cut and highlighted over the weekend with Jeannie, and my friends and family all said it was their favorite cut and color they've ever seen on me. Prior to that, their favorite was the LAST time Jeannie did my hair! As far as body treatments go, there are better places in town if you are looking for the true "day spa" experience, but their technicians are amazing. I am a self-proclaimed spa whore, so if I'm going to treat myself to something on vacation or have extra money, I will usually get a massage. And I have to honestly say that the best massage I've had anywhere in my life was the chakra balance massage given by Desiree. I think I actually had an out of body experience during it! Yeah, the prices are higher than most of us middle class slobs can afford, but it's worth it to me. Sure, I could get a cheaper cut and color at a Snip-in-the-box shop, but the overall experience is so much better at L'Essence. I can relax, have a glass of wine, and get into girlie mode. I have been going to this salon for a long, long time!!!! As you walk in, you walk into a classy and friendly place. You are always greeted with a smile and offered something to drink. As you wait, you can browse the Aveda products they have on display. If you have any questions, there is always someone available to answer any questions you have about the products. When yon walk to the area where the chairs are, there is this gorgeous wall plant arrangement! Included with your service, there is a short hand massage which is amazing!!!! Been coming to L'Essence Salon for a little over a year. Came in with ravaged hair that I had been dying my hair with O lia OTC hair dye. It was falling out, dry and a gothic plum color (was in a mood). I needed help but knew my fine hair is very sensitive to certain dye products. Jessica has not only removed the dark black plum color but brought my hair back to health. It has since filled in the bald spots, and has grown over 8 inches. I highly recommend this salon services (I have enjoyed many) and its enriching line of Aveda products! Great place to get pampered! read more

Becca is the best massage therapist! I did the 90 min therapeutic massage and she was so intuitive with the right amount of pressure on all the sore spots. She really listened to what I said about the part of my body that hurts the most and told me what she was going to work on so the commutation was good. It was great because I could feel my muscles relaxing with the firm pressure but without being too painful or uncomfortable. She wore a mask so all the Covid-19 guidelines were followed and the spa is very clean. I felt great now several days later so the massage had a really lasting effect. Perfect amount of pressure and technique! I highly recommend Becca! read more

This spa is located in an old Victorian house, downtown. That's about all it has going for it. Sorry to knock this place, but my experiences here have been mediocre to bad. I've been to L'Essence for eyebrow waxes, facials, and hair services. The front desk staff are NOT friendly and welcoming. They act like stuck up b*tches and send me up to the waiting room on the 2nd floor as quickly as possible -- I literally felt like they were pushing me out of the way! The self-serve display of nuts, cranberries, and water in the waiting area on the 2nd floor doesn't make up for the rudeness of the front desk staff -- sorry! The aesthetician who does waxing and facials is nice enough, but too talkative. And she does only a mediocre job. When I've gone there for a simple haircut, the stylist was just not up to par -- I tell her I want all one length and she cuts all kinds of crazy layers. Just a disaster. And the prices for everything are higher than most other places in town. They think charging double is okay because they have an Aveda sign hanging in the window. Yeah, if you have money to burn, and I mean burn, have a field day there! Final thoughts -- the cute Victorian house and expensive Aveda products don't save this spa. I get my hair done by Shaye, and she always does a great job every time! She really wants to make sure you are happy with your look, so she's really open to discussing and understanding what you want, giving you her perspective, and adjusting the cut if you change your mind. Her massages are out of this world, and she's always fun to be around! The receptionists have always been friendly to me, and I think the atmosphere is really down-to-earth. I have pedicures done here somewhat regularly. Their spa pedicures are the best in town if you need serious work done on your feet. If you have calluses this is the place to go for beautiful soft feet. The aromatherapy and the atmosphere is wonderful. The nail staff is friendly and easy to talk with. I really want to score L'essence higher but I have to give it 3 stars because the other services I have had here were average or below average. I have had my hair and brows done here. The cut was nothing special and the highlights were done so heavily you almost couldn't tell they were highlights. The aesthetician who waxed my brows was was really friendly. The waxing itself was painless and pampering. It felt like a luxurious spa treatment! Unfortunately, she over-waxed my brows and then uncomfortably apologized for about 10 mins afterward. They looked ok, just not what I asked for. So I will keep going here for pedicures but I can not recommend their other services. read more
