Beware - the waiter harassed us for a tip. Believe the reviews. Tourist trap! The waiter asked if we'd like to leave a tip, I said no. He said "wow why you don't think I did a good job?" Me - "no - it's just that you don't have to tip in Paris" Him - "who told you that?? That's not true" Manipulative. Harassment. On top of that, my salad was disgusting. the blue cheese dressing was watery. The chicken was dry. Harassing and manipulating customers? That waiter should be fired. read more

This was pretty much our nightly hangout for a week, while staying at the Hotel Select right next door. Pleasant location right next to some fountains, which helped keep it as cool as possible while in Paris in a record-breaking heatwave. Mostly we enjoyed cocktails and beer here, either before dinner (post-sightseeing) or late at night with friends in our travel group. The service was very friendly, especially as the waiters started to recognize us after a few days. They'd let us linger until 1am yet also were attentive when we asked for our check or needed something. The few small/light dishes we had as snacks (a salad and a cheese plate) were very nice as well. On our last night, when I mentioned we were leaving, our regular server gave us both handshakes and well wishes for safe travels and to return again. I have no doubt that we will. read more

What a great little find. After a long walk around the Luxembourg Gardens we were wandering our way back to the Seine and needed a little break. We stopped and got two Monacos and a caprese salad which was phenomenal. It was a great little spot to stop and have a wonderful snack and a drink with a great view of the courtyard out front. read more

One of our first meals in Paris since it was right by our hotel. I'd learned some French words on the plane ride over but became very shy (aka a complete & total mute) when it came time to test my knowledge. The waiter, who was obviously used to seeing dumbfounded American tourists asked me in beautiful, perfect English, 'Two for dinner? This way, please.' Talk about feeling like an ignorant American. We weren't trying to be ironic when we ordered: gratinee oignon €7 and faux filet €13.50 but french onion soup and & filet is exactly what we wanted when we stepped off the plane! Americans beware! This touristy cafe is the kinda place that lives up to the Parisian stereotype. Having done our homework on local tipping customs, we didn't leave any tip after our order of an afternoon petit beer and coffee noisette which came to €6 (for something more substantial you're supposed to just to round up we were told). After settling up, our waiter has the cahones (sp?) to swing by just to ask "where is my tip?" Ummm, for reals?! But I'll add this too, this is after noticing two French couples who flanked us left nothing (yes I was paying attention). Same waiter...and said nothing to them. Friends, there are so many wonderful Parisian cafés with wonderful waiters, regardless of your accent, so I'd kindly suggest staying away from this one. read more

Despite the unfortunate and highly embarrassing event that occurred here, L'ecritoire was a delight. For 29 Euros, you could get a 4 course meal that is enough to make you not eat for the rest of the day! For my courses, I picked a selection of cheeses (Chevre, Emmental, and St. Nectaire); a slice of buttery fois gras terrine; an entree of lamb chops, fried scalloped potatoes and haricot verts; and a tarte tartine. I was surprised by the low score as well. This wonderful brassiere was located just around corner from my hotel in a quiet courtyard across from the Sorbonne University. It became my quiet escape from the day during my two week stay in Paris. Peaceful fountains just off the Main Street in the Latin Quarter. Chose this based off of our Rick Steves book. What a wonderful location! Views and sounds from the water foundations and a great view of the Sorbonne. And no buses! Had the duck confit which was wonderful! My husband had the chicken which was also wonderful! Also recommend the cafe gourmand. A wonderful way to get your cafe and try a couple of delicious desserts! read more

Nice place for a quick drink and spend some time with friends. Their crêpes are really good and drinks are reasonable. Service was up to standard, professional, quick and knowledgeable. The place is located next to the Sorbonne university and not far from the Luxembourg Gardens!! read more

Food was great. Service was amazing. We had menu a $32 that you order appetizer , a main course , 3 cheeses and a desert. All fantastic. We had onion soup gratinée a l'oignon to die for. Salmon with pasta and fish of the day(dos de merlu) with curry vegetables. As a desert we had crémé brûlée And ou moelleux au chocolat crème anglaise. Lovely café in a great location--and in summer, the trees and the nearby fountain contribute to making this a terrific spot for a coffee or a drink and a quick bite to eat. Service was prompt and totally fine; cappuccino was good. read more

Some of the food was adequate (nice mustard-tinged salad dressing, and the roast chicken was actuallyvery nice) but some was awful (the "white cheese"dessert was a cup of yogurt with a drizzle of raspberry syrup). That would get two or three stars. But we had our first encounter with the legendary French waitstaff rudeness. We were completely ignored for 10-15 minutes at a stretch, with two waiters standing five feet away conversing with a friend while we tried to get their attention -- 'Monsieur!" 'Pardon!" -- at least eight times so we could get to a show. It was almost comic, like a movie scene. No wonder that, of the three or four cafes on the Place de la Sorbonne, this was the only one that wasn't busy. Recommended by Rick Steves, perhaps, but not by me. read more

Well, I don't know why this place has such a low overall star rating, because we had a very nice experience there. On our way to the Pantheon, we stopped by L'ecritoire to have lunch in the middle of a gorgeous Parisian day in August. The service was very nice and the food was excellent. I had a salad with liver paté and my husband had a charcuterie platter and a beer. Everything was so nice! The food was fresh and well presented, and the liver paté was rich and very delicious. The bread basket was a very nice complement to the meats in our meals, and the service was very nice. What more could I ask for, other than this lovely outdoor dining experience in a great neighborhood. read more

Excellent service. Unlike many other French restaurants, the servers are very attentive. I ate dinner here one evening and had drinks here another evening with a group. They even stayed open late so we could finish our bottle of wine. read more

L'ecritoire is a Paris café classique where I usually quaff and nosh a few times during my frequent pilgrimages to Paris when I want something predictable and atmospheric. I went to the The Sorbonne one summer semester long ago in the college days and therefore I've been coming to this cafe for what one might say, 35 years, and merci a Dieu not much has changed over time perdu on this spot on the map. The café offers typical outdoor seating beneath the parapluies (only when necessary)within sight and sound of the wondrous Place La Sorbonne fountain, as well as a solarium to still take in scenery but allow needed refuge from the relentless fumeurs. There's more seating inside for those who have gone underground or just need some time alone with a friend and a counter and full bar for pilgrims who just need a liquid fix without the frills au comptior. L'ecritoire offers a full menu with a range of options from the classic Croque's and snacks to salades, even burgers and frites and daily plats and formules, and a half page list of desserts and glaces. Today I had the comforting Croque Madame which did wonders for the starving soul on jet lag served with a green salad, vinagrette dollops, and a tomato wedge. Dessert was a Apple Tarte Fine served up hot with a scoop of what tasted like bourbon and caramel infused vanilla ice cream and chased it down with a fine express avec sucre. Though the food is pretty good, it's the location on the Place de la Sorbonne that makes it more of an experience of the passing sights and sounds of the Paris street scene. read more

Rude service and zero explanation as to why. My wife and I were simply hoping to sit outside and enjoy a bottle of champagne and watch a football game, but upon ordering the waitress told us we could not occupy the outside seats w/out ordering food?! Isn't a $50 bottle of champagne enough to warrant seats? And it's not like all the seating was full. There were a few other open tables and what looked like to us like many didn't have food, just drinks. It's World Cup in France at 8:30! Who eats in France at 8:30 anyhow? Dumb. We loved this Brasserie opposite the Sorbonne in the Latin Quarter. Being Americans, we couldn't wait until 7 to eat dinner so we ate here at least four times in April, 2011. The service was excellent and I thought the duck was especially good. I loved the setting in front of a fountain. read more
