I love coming here especially for the hibachi dinner I usually order filet mignon and lobster! Seriously their fried rice is so bomb!!! First they give you salad and soup I love the salad because of the dressing but the soup is blah nothing special one mushroom with two fried onions it's kinda pointless but I guess. Then your order comes with vegetables, rice or noodles. I always get the fried rice but I definitely have to try the noodles because they look so good. They also give you two shrimps which is awesome because I love seafood. Usually you can take food home because they give you pretty good amount of food! This last time I went I order a shrimp tempura roll which was very yummy totally worth trying out their sushi! Every time I have been there the atmosphere is calm and you just really enjoy your dinner experience. I love this place it's become one of favorite places in buffalo. read more

Finally got around to checking out this place and we are really glad we did. When we walked in, it was super busy, esp for a Thurs night, but there was only a short 5 min wait to get seated at our table. The place is nicely decorated and is dimly lit, yet not too dark. Our server came over right away and got us drinks, not to mention kept us hydrated and with full drinks throughout the night so that was a definite plus. For dinner, we ordered the Christmas Tree sushi appetizer and I ordered the chicken and shrimp hibachi dinner, with hubby ordering the filet mignon and chicken hibachi. Our dinners came with miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, a shrimp appetizer, veggies, choice of rice or noodles and of course the meat. Dinner was great and we were so full by the time the meat even got to our plates. Everything was seasoned and cooked great; no complaints whatsoever with our food. Only complaint was that our chef was a bit lame. Because people go to hibachi mostly because of the experience and the show, that was a bit of a let down, especially because the chefs behind us were so lively and awesome. Hello All!!! Specifically all my equal opportunity defenders! Alert long message ahead! After supporting this business located at 4060 Maple Rd, Amherst, NY 14226 for many years myself and my family will no longer be supportive to this bigoted, heavily racist establishment. To whom this may be of interest; I am a stickler for customer service. Kyoto has and probably always have been a place where equal treatment has not resigned. After overlooking the treatment for many years enough is enough. I have been told the rule many times before "Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me". There has been multiple chances given to this restaurant. This particular afternoon myself, my wife and son decided to treat ourselves after a long day or school and work to dinner. Now keeping in mind as I stated before we frequently have been a customer to this establishment for some time. We liked to enjoy either take out and or dinning in very frequently. This past Saturday was a very busy night for Kyoto. We have been pushing for our son to try new things for some time and to our surprise we finally succeeded in getting him to like and now love the Hibachi styled dinner served at Kyoto. Due to the love and light that the one chef brought to my sons face we then started to request this chef by the name Sean "the Japanese Cowboy". Being that the restaurant was extremely busy Saturday 11/6/21 around 8pm my son had to settle for another available chef. Unfortunately the chef was subpar and the meal was not as satisfying as the favored Japanese Cowboy would have cooked. So with tears in my son's eyes I and my wife promised our son that we would come back sooner than we normally would to satisfy his desire to have his favorite chefs cooked food. It's now Monday 11/8/21 at 5pm Eastern time and we have been successful in getting the long waited great dish from the Japanese Cowboy. My son is so happy and satisfied now. It's time for the bill.  Now normally I would pay with my card; so whatever the damage is we would be willing to pay it. As me and my wife remembered back to the last visit I quickly conversed with my wife about giving the chef his tip in hand. The chef was happy to accept his well-deserved tip. After he had left the area the waitress who we have had many run-ins with was asked to remove the 18% gratuity from our bill. After the request was casually made i and my wife furthered our conversation and unbeknown to us the waitress decided to rebuttal out loud and walk off. The only reason what was rudely stated from the waitress was heard was because of the kind woman that was sitting at the table with my family along with another party of two just ahead of us. The woman began to tell us how she made mention to our last visit and stated we did not pay a tip and then because of our request she then decided to become rude and dismissive any further request made by my family. After we received what was asked of her the woman who took notice to this action looked at her bill and seen that she did not have the gratuity added to her bill. Out of curiosity the woman then asked the party of two if they had been charged extra as well as my family being that she was not charged. The party of two then began to become intrigued and requested to see her bill to make sure this is indeed what the woman had received from this waitress. After the party of two looked over her bill they also began to become bothered because they also received a gratuity of 18%. Now typically if this is something that the establishment has begun to implement then we all could understand "the rule is the rule". After the waitress came back to collect the bills we then questions her why this party of three "Caucasian woman and two small boys" did not receive the up charge of the bill but my family and this other black party of two did. The woman began to laugh and her tune changed from dismissive to silence and then she walked away and never came back. With very strong dislike of any form of social injustice "Asian Hate?" I would have thought this behavior would have not happen to my family or anyone else's; but it clearly is happening. What would you have done? Tell me, do you believe this is correct behavior for an establishment thriving off the hard working customers.  Is it a luxury to be treated unfairly this way? I came here with a group of friends last night. We all had the hibachi in some form. The food was awesome! I had chicken hibachi with fried rice. I also did enjoy the miso soup which I think usually tastes like dish water but this one didn't. I'm trying hard to lose weight but I just couldn't resist the fried ice cream. That was good also. I've been here on multiple occasions ranging from team work lunch hibachi, intimate booth dinner, birthday hibachi with a large crowd. The best were the lunch time vist and the booth dinner. They seem more customer and detail oriented when the place isn't packed. Disclaimer- I'm allergic to crab so I don't eat sushi anymore. Man I miss it, the rolls and whatnot look amazing. Noodle dishes and hibachi only for me. I found that the food is medicore, it always looks so good and if you get a good hibachi chef you'll be very entertained. The food I found to be overly salty and greasy and for the price I dont think what you get is a good value. Went here for a birthday dinner with some friends for hibachi. I've done hibachi before at other places but was my first time at Kyoto. The food was a basic hibachi menu, prices roughly around the same you'd find at any other. However, it took forever for the service. Some of the girls orders were done incorrect. Also, the way they rationed the portions made zero sense. Myself and one other person had gotten the lobster but it was not split evenly. And then I had ordered filet Mignon as well... and I should have been the first to receive my filet as I was the ONLY one who asked for it rare. Instead I was served last so my steak was completely well done, and I was given the scraps as they handed out almost all that was left as extras before realizing they had another person who had ordered it. And for me paying the highest price of everybody for my food options I was pretty unhappy but I just let it go because of the occasion. On top of that, the food was bland, my lobster was over cooked also and both tasted either old or stale. Noodles were under seasoned, the shrimp appetizer was ok and basically the best part of the entire meal was my martini lol. I definitely won't be back due to the lack of flavor of the food and horrible way they do the portions and that my request for how I like my steak was disregarded. I have to say none of that has ever happened the multiple times I have visited Fuji Grill. Not to mention... most people go to hibachi for a show along with the food. The guy we had... Yawn. Barely talked to us, just flung some vegetables around the table and that was basically it. Don't come here if you want some kind of entertainment. They gave us wayyyy much smaller portions than others sitting beside us, like giving us just one shrimp while giving others 10. My dojo enjoys returning to this restaurant for all our major belt testing to celebrate our new black belts. They have the room, the entertainment, and great staff. Have always had amazing hibachi (chicken, veggie, steak, shrimp have all been good) and the sushi is fresh and on the smaller size for the rolls. Individual sushi pieces are good sized. Plan for at least an hour at the hibachi for the show and the courses of food. I like coming here solo or with groups; try it yourself! read more

There was a group of 16 of us that went for a birthday. We had reservations and were quickly sat. The food, service and show were great. The pineapple martini is to die for! Everything was nice... until the end when they were pretty much rushing us out. I understand it was a busy night, but we all had entrees, 1-2 drinks and most ordered an appetizer or dessert. Once the meals were cooked and served, we felt rushed out. I understand they want to turn and tables, but guest experiences should be a priority as well. Had such a fun dinner here on Saturday night with our party for our son's 17th birthday. Keep in mind that you must wait for your entire party to arrive before being seated. They take orders and cook everything at once in front of you. They have the process down to a science. The experience was kicked off after drink orders were finished by watching the utensil show to begin the cooking process. I ordered the Emperor's dinner of filet mignon and chicken. This comes with house soup, salad as well as rice or noodles alongside the dinner. I tried the noodles for the first time and they were really good. It's amazing to watch them cook everything at once. There were two cooks for our party of 16, so they were cooking for 8 each. It was made to look so effortless! We definitely take notes so we can try it out with the blackstone at home..haha!! I usually take a lot of pictures, yet all I have this night is a photo of my scorpion bowl. What do they say? I would give zero stars if I could. I've been here a few times and the sushi was sub-par, but I was craving a kani salad so I decided to give it another shot since it's the closest place to my house. BIG MISTAKE. I had called ahead to pick up my order, but ten minutes apparently wasn't enough time for them to start working on my order. I also had to call three separate times and wait on hold each time before they finally TOOK my order. After walking in, the counter woman scurries me to the bar area, where she grabs my ticket and asks for my credit card, then disappears. She leaves me standing at the bar confused, no idea where she had went. It was safe to assume they had not put in my order till I had arrived, which is absurd. After about 5 minutes she returns with my card. She then comes out with my food in a brown bag a short while later. When I got home, I was very displeased to find a large bed of iceberg lettuce with a small pile of crab meat...I am originally from NYC and have ordered kani salads from numerous Japanese restaurants in NYC and Buffalo, and never have I received anything like this. It's usually ALL crab meat, or if anything a MAJORITY crab meat. Instead, I received a styrofoam container filled with lettuce, avocado, tomatoes and the smallest bit of crabmeat. When I called the restaurant to find out what went wrong, the woman who answered was very rude insisting I was wrong. I asked for her manager who tried to offer me a new salad, but wanted me to drive back to the restaurant because they do not offer delivery. I had just gotten home and there was no way I was driving back. I am highly disappointed and would not recommend anyone come here. It's noisy. Staff is rude. Sushi is generally served warm. About as good as Taisho Bistro in terms of service, quality of food, and prices, though it is a bigger restaurant, and on the weekends or on Friday it can get very crowded. But if you live closer to Maple than Sheridan, this is a good choice indeed for Japanese fare. read more

There is always plenty of food. For those with allergies they will cook it in the back and bring it out to you. For the vegans out there they have tofu and veggie only options. Hibachi is an art form, it takes a lot of talent to cook, put on a show, and deliver amazing food. I love going here on those special night outs, like New Years Eve, for example. My wife and I were discussing where to go and this has been the front runner for quite a few years. We decided to get the Philadelphia Roll as well as the hibachi. I went with the chicken and rice while she had chicken and noodles. Of course when you have that much food, sharing is always an option. Now if you have never been to a place like this, it is an experience. Having someone cook in front of you while entertaining you is great. From the fancy flipping utensils skills, special egg cracking, to smiley face flames, it was a great time. Our chef was a lot of fun, and when Saki is involved how can you go wrong? You get to try and catch vegetables that are thrown at you via a spatula, and if you catch it, that's right Saki! Everything is so tasty, from the soup to the salad to the main course. For the money it is worth the show and the quality of the food. I highly recommend this for a special day, work outing, or just something different to do. read more

Stopped in for lunch with a client as he wanted hibachi. Ordered the sashimi dinner for lunch which came with tuna, yellow tail, butter fish, snapper and salmon. They also provided miso soup and I asked for a seaweed salad. The soup was a bit lackluster as it was tepid and under flavored. Seaweed salad was on the larger size and served over julienned cucumbers. The sashimi was all fresh and had decent sized portions. I understand they are flipping tables quickly because of Covid and restrictions but for such an expensive meal we felt extremely rushed. Have had this restaurant bookmarked for my sister's birthday since last July. She LOVES hibachi. They don't take reservations but do, "call ahead seating" so I had my name down for 12 people at 6 pm on Friday night! Ten of us simultaneously walked in at 6:05. I walked up to the hostess station and let the woman know we were here. She asked if our entire party was here and I said that we were just waiting on two. She said to let her know when the two arrived and then she would seat us. We didn't mind except for the fact that there were ten of us cramped into the entrance way of the restaurant and people coming in and out were bumping into us. The restaurant was about 1/4 full and I didn't see any reason why they couldn't allow us to be seated considering 10 out of the 12 of us were here and we were taking up so much room standing around, we were in the way! After fifteen minutes of waiting on the two late comers I asked the hostess if it would be okay if we sat down because we weren't sure when the remaining two would be here. Well according to Kyoto the policy is the whole party needs to be there. Finally the rest of our party arrived and we were able to sit down at one of the areas for Hibachi. There were about four large areas for Hibachi from what I could see and then separate tables hidden behind a wall and a bar. We sat down and seconds later our waitress came over to take our food order, (mind you while two guests were in the bathroom) We hadn't had a chance to open our menus yet! Some of the guests knew what they wanted so she started on one end and worked her way around, many people saying pass since again, we hadn't had a chance to look at our menu yet. She didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink which I GUESS is slightly understandable considering most of the party were under 21, but I needed a stiff one and there's other beverages besides alcoholic ones....but not a huge deal. They don't have brown rice here which is actually a mega deal breaker for me. Healthy alternatives are huge now and I think that would be beneficial to get some. Charge an extra $2 who cares! People want healthy and they will pay for it! Now to the food and Hibachi experience. Grab some popcorn for this. The man cooking the food was "performing" and completely flung one of the tools at my friend. It was flung at her shoulder and thankfully didn't hurt her. We were taken back because that just doesn't happen. Seconds later he lit the vegetables on fire and I was ABSOLUTELY shocked to see that I still had eyebrows when I reached down for my mirror in my purse. I am being serious I felt burned as did my sister sitting next to me and the two guys to my right. All of us scooted a few inches back in our seats. We are all outgoing and participative but nobody wanted to do the, "toss the veggie in your mouth game" because we were fearful that something would go wrong. It took the fun out of the whole experience. Quality of food was poor. Lacked any flavor and was 100% frozen not fresh. The vegetable portion on the hibachi was embarrassing. I have eaten at dozens of Hibachi restaurants and have never seen portions so stingy. They asked for a temperature on the steak and I don't know why because my requested medium rare was well done and then some. Shrimp was undercooked and if I was a little bit more outspoken I would have tossed mine back on the grill but I pushed them to the side. We weren't even half way done eating and our waitress came over with to go boxes. I was angry. This was my sister's special birthday dinner with her friends from school and we were being rushed and it wasn't right. If it had been my friends I absolutely would have said something but being the older sister I didn't want to embarrass her. Checks were dropped and waitress was kind enough to split them up. HOWEVER, took it upon herself to add 20% gratuity to each person's bill. This is fine to do as a party of 8 or more as long as it is expressed at the beginning of the meal but now only was it not brought to our attention, you shouldn't add 20% after splitting the bill. Anyone who has ever worked in the restaurant business knows this is wrong. Last but not least, the most upsetting part of the experience. Call me dramatic but here it goes. After the checks were dropped I walked up to a group of about 4 waitresses and reminded them it was my sister's birthday because I noticed they sang. I specifically said a bunch of girls and myself are going to the bathroom right now so please wait for us to get back. About a minute later we walk back to the table and they had already sang. I WAS FURIOUS. My sister was upset I missed it and that was just the icing on one of the worst cakes I've had. Good service can make up for bad food. I went here for dinner on a Thursday night at around 6pm. There is also a little koi pond off to the right when you enter, which was really cool. I did notice they also have hibachi and a more private dinner area as well. I sat at the sushi bar which was empty. I'm ok with it because I was on business travel and just needed some quiet time to myself. First off I love sushi and some of the crazy rolls people come up with. First off I saw the dinosaur roll and omg, I had to order. It's a tempura eel, cream cheese rolled w. crunchy spicy tuna, eel, avocado, tobiko, crunchy & eel sauce on top. It was actually really good and filling, it was priced pretty reasonable. But the highlight was that they had fresh Toro (fatty tuna) and Uni (sea urchin).. these are market price so just be aware it can add up. read more

Love this place mostly because of the staff. I came here for hibachi dinner on a Friday night. It wasn't crowded so we were escorted to a table immediately. We started off with some drinks. I shared the scorpion bowl with two other girls. Taste wise- it was alright. But it's such a fun drink! It's lit on fire before it arrives to the table. I've had the Bahama Mama and Sexy Lady before and those are probably one of the best drinks. I had the shrimp and steak dinner with rice. Comes with a shrimp appetizer (which is just two shrimps) and vegetables. It's good but not worth the $25-30. Nothing special for the price but the hibachi show is worth it. Decided to pass on the Hibachi acrobatics (or is that food-obatics) and check out Kyoto's lunch specials today. We ordered a Lunch Box, an assorted Sushi plate with California Roll and a Triple Roll lunch special. Each meal was $10 and was served with either salad or Miso soup. The Miso was pretty nondescript but was warm on a cold day and felt good. The Sushi plate disappeared rather quickly (except for the eel - not her cup of tea) and we could have eaten that all day long. It was very fresh and very flavorful. The lunchbox had a nice assortment of California Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Vegetable Tempura and salad with ginger dressing. The Triple Roll I selected consisted of a California Roll (my basic staple), Tuna and Salmon rolls. The meat was almost sweet with fresh Nori and rice and really hit the spot. We had chopstick practice for our uninitiated guests and had fun with that as well as the eventual (and surprising) exploration of Wasabi. :::brain burn:: Excellent food today coupled with attentive staff and fast service. For anyone looking for a quick summary - It's all about the show. The food is pretty good, but it's the hibachi grill tables where you watch your meal prepared that make Kyoto worth a visit. In the interest of writing a good review let me tell you about both. Recently I went with some coworkers for lunch. There were 7 of us which is just short of a "full audience" for the hibachi. We were served a mushroom soup which I liked, but wasn't anything amazing as well as a salad with the standard watery ginger dressing. I mostly passed on the salad. As for our orders we mostly went with chicken or steak hibachi lunch specials which were priced well considering the standard menu. The exception was my coworker who ordered a full feast with fillet, scallops, and a shrimp side. She paid a good chunk more (but raved about it). I believe it may have been one of the most expensive items on the menu. After the orders were taken things got rolling as the cook rolled in with a cart of fixings and a holster of knives, forks, and implements of destruction. He did the quick demonstration of his skills in juggling them while lighting a bit of fire. We then received the standard veggie toss which everyone failed at, but everyone enjoyed. I was so close! He also gave us a volcano made from an onion and some egg juggling. If this all sounds familiar it's because it's pretty much the formula for your standard hibachi show. The fun was in the cook. While doing all of this (very skillfully) he was cracking jokes and even playing things up a little "adult" with the fried rice which I didn't realize was possible. We all almost died laughing as he served up the stir fry vegetables and gave the leftover portion to my "larger" friend exclaiming "Oh skinny boy! You need to eat more!" Everyone's steak/chicken was correctly prepared and it tasted good, but I have to give a bit more for the fact that Kyoto always makes me laugh. Kyoto is a nice Japanese restaurant that offers both hibachi and regular dining in Amherst. It has a tendency to get pretty packed, especially if you want to do hibachi so I would suggest either making reservations or getting there early. I've had the opportunity to experience both their hibachi and regular dining. Starting with the hibachi, I would say it's pretty entertaining. Getting a seat can be a hassle and you will probably wait a while even if you have a reservation. The chefs are very nice and the food turns out pretty well. They tend to make their meats a little more well-done than I would prefer, even when I request it be less well done. However, I was a little disappointed by the performance aspect because most hibachi places I've been to do various knife tricks, and are a little more flashy with their performance. But all in all, the food and the show was pretty solid. In terms of the regular dining experience, because of the busy nature of the restaurant, I would say the service was not terribly attentive. They actually forgot a few of our requests (drink orders and silverware), but were pretty apologetic when they forgot. The food itself was not bad. Their sushi and sashimi were fresh and tasty. The rolls however, were a little be desired - maybe their rice was a different batch, but I was say it was pretty dry. But all in all, I'd say the food was also pretty well rounded. Besides the understaffed service (on busy nights) and perhaps the wait, one of the other qualms I have with the place is that I believe it is pretty overpriced. Most places I've been too (even in LA) have not charged $22 for a sushi/sashimi. Though, since I was craving fresh sushi, and all the other places I've been to in Buffalo have fallen short so far (though I have a few more places I would like to try out). The food was great, and my drink was delicious! You may have to wait a few minutes or so to fill your table up a bit if you don't have that many people in your party.
