Their dishes were elevated and flavoring on point. Service: 2/5 The server was nice but lacked wine knowledge. Failed to clear the table as we dined. Did not offer another glass of wine after it was empty. Small things matter. In addition, we ordered the crab roll at the beginning with the cold dishes and it did not come at all until after the other rolls came. That means, the other rolls were made and somehow the crab one wasn't ready. Big turn down to wait so long. Ambiance 2/5 There was some side bar next to us that was full of loud noice from cleaning and separating dishes during our whole meal. The table was okay. Wow!! Kyojin was everything I had hoped it would be, like a wonderful serene dream. A beautiful environment, which somehow smelled like the woods outside of Kyoto, was truly a special place for a treat. Sometimes, when I take myself out for a treat, I regret having spent so much money even if the food was great. However, at Kyojin. I did not regret the $$$$ I spent because everything was truly so fabulous! I started with a cocktail, which was extremely unique and so delicious that I ended up ordering another one (which is not common for me, as I usually prefer to enjoy my meal without liquor). They do not have their cocktail list online and I don't remember what it was called, but it had some kind of a green alcohol floating on top. Yes, that sounds weird, and no it wasn't a grasshopper (yuck). Just trust me on this one. Being a very new restaurant when I visited, there were some hiccups. I received an incorrect dish, and when I pointed this out, I felt like the server made it seem like it was my fault or that he was being inconvenienced by this. But it clearly was not my fault, I had even asked him to describe the dish before I ordered and what ended up coming was not that at all. The manager made things right, but then I had a new server and I wondered if our previous one had gotten in trouble, oops. There was also a time when someone came out from the kitchen and asked if I had received all my food, which I had. Both of these things are definitely new restaurant hiccups, and do not impact my review. Anyways, while I ordered nigiri, what I got was "seared with foie gras" toro. This was the most luxurious thing I've ever put in my mouth, and not only just because it had edible gold on it - it was like a piece of art on the plate, and it was absolutely delicious. The tataki style salmon was to die for, one of the best things I had by far. My friend and I both ordered the monster quad, which was delicious. I wish I had realized that all of the nigiri on this plate was seared, because after just having seared toro, I found it to be a little bit too greasy for my taste (even though the greasiness was delicious and flavorful). But, in itself, it was delicious. I also ordered the garlic butter miso scallop, because the reviews were fantastic. I didn't find it to be amazing, but it's possible that it was amazing on its own but it just didn't stand out to me because the rest of the food was so absolutely incredible. I can't wait to return and treat myself, as there are so many amazing things on the menu I didn't get to try. I feel like this is going to be a favorite of mine moving forward, and I'm sure the kinks will be worked out in no time. read more

Everyone working at the sushi counter was very friendly and were happy to explain the different dishes they were working on. The drinks were also delicious and creative. The restaurant also had a very modern and enjoyable ambience. Taking off a star only because it took us thirty minutes to get seated, which was a little frustrating. Hate to write this because the restaurant is gorgeous and the food is amazing, but for the caliber of restaurant the service could have been better. I told my waiter I was pregnant and couldn't have raw fish and asked which rolls I could eat. I chose one and asked if one normally raw one could be cooked which would then make it safe to eat. He said yes. I ended up eating it and on the last peace noticed some raw tuna? I asked him, you cooked this right? And he gave me attitude and was like I had them cook the scallop! I think he assumed I wanted the roll for free? But I didn't, I just literally was pissed off that I told him nothing raw and he made the roll half raw, putting me and my baby at risk. maybe it's just me but if a person comes in listing an allergy or a nonnegotiable you should be able to accommodate at a nice place like this. The aesthetics at the restaurant are absolutely beautiful. All the decor from the furniture to the walls are modern and stylish and it creates a very intimate environment. This restaurant is fairly new and I think DC restaurant really take some time to settle in. The food orders came out pretty quickly but they were out of a lot items because they were busy the day before. The service was excellent and our waitress did a great job of guiding us through the menu to dishes that she thought we would enjoy based on our taste profiles. Kyojin didn't present itself as a fusion but there were definitely experimental dishes worth experiencing. A promising competition to Shoto. Ambiance Tucked in Cady's Alley, the spacious below ground venue carries the historic Georgetown feel well with its stone and industrial decor. Soft lighting and ample spaces between parties offers conversational privacy and is great for date night or an intimate executive dinner. The hypnotic, modern music matches the atmosphere well - interesting enough to enjoy but does not compete for your attention. What was neat was that Kyojin takes full advantage of the sprawling space by carving out sections using just enough minor differences in art to create the illusion of rooms despite an open floor plan. Service Accommodating and well trained staff who are attentive without hovering and very tuned into feedback. It's evident customer experience and the upscale rebranding was important to management as they upgrade dining formality from their previous establishment. Our server was Jessica, who spoke intelligently to the complexities of dishes but remained genuine in her recommendations and was a professional guide in helping us navigate the menus. Food Each dish was super fresh and artfully designed. While some were more palatable to the ears than mouth, there certainly weren't any clear misses - just dependent on your palette. Noteworthy ones below: "The Winner" This 2006 Morikami Award winner lived up and beyond its recognition. The slight sweetness of the BBQ eel & aromatic truffle oil enhances the richness of the foie gras and tuna. Acidity of the balsamic reduction & pink ginger sauce then cuts the richness to avoid the bite sitting too heavily on your palette while the sprinkle of salt brings balance to the sweet and savory morsel anchored on a thin layer of sushi rice. Definitely a must have. Otoro with Uni Their fresh bluefish fatty tuna belly from Japan melts on your tongue and blends well into the Hokkaido Uni smooth. Wasabi truffle brought depth into this umami blend that spread it to your sinus cavity. Smoked Lavender Salmon Seared with Foie Gras The seared with foie gras combination was a reliable assemble. However, the lavender-smoked element actually degrades the salmon and overpowers any other ingredient with the feel of artificiality. It tasted more like florally-spritzed than lavender-smoked. I went here on Thursday night for dinner, and was pleasantly surprised. The location took a minute to find as it's in an alleyway down some stairs, but the food and service that I received more than made up for it. The interior is very modern and chic. I sat at the sushi bar, but there's also regular seating as well as bar seating available. The server that I had was very attentive and checked on me multiple times during my meal to make sure that everything was going well and to clear away dishes, so that my area always looked neat. I started with a seaweed salad, which was very fresh and delicious. I also had a Moscow Mule, which was also clean and refreshing. In terms of my main meal, I had a salmon lover roll, a Jeff roll, and a Lobster roll. Of the three rolls that I had, the lobster roll was my favorite although all of the rolls were really good. I was concerned that the mango on top of the salmon lover roll was going to be hard, but it was pleasantly soft, sweet, and complemented the roll well. I went when this place first opened and it was very good. The drinks were delicious, the appetizers were good, the sushi rolls were fresh. The place itself was a bit hard to find - it's in a back alley street, however once you're inside it's very nice. The ambiance is very cool and cute - exposed brick and waterfalls around the place. It also has quite a big bar with seats. The service itself was lacking when I went. My group of 5 spent 2+ hours there because the service and food came out so slow (not because we wanted to). We had to flag down the waiter, which was hard and annoying, but I'll blame that on that particular night. I had a group of friends go the next day and said that wasn't an issue. I went to Kyogen with three of my work colleagues for dinner a couple weeks ago. It was a Wednesday night around 8:00 p.m. and we got seated immediately. My first impressions were that this place is absolutely beautiful inside. It's much larger than you would think from the entrance in the plaza. It almost seems like a secret the way it's tucked away off the street. We were greeted right away by our server and he took our drink orders. The menu has a lot of unique different rolls and dishes on it. I was a little distracted and did not take notes on exactly what we ordered. Some of the order included nigiri and gyoza, which were easy to remember. The prices were more than I would typically pay at a restaurant. The nigiri was about $7 to $10 per piece. The food itself was delicious. It was very fresh and the presentations were amazing. So far, sounds like a pretty good experience, right? The reason why I was distracted was that when the server first brought the food out, he dumped a carafe of soy sauce down my back. He immediately apologized and called the manager out. The manager Matthew said he would pay my dry cleaning bill. I said okay, but I felt like he should have offered more than that. I was sitting there with a completely cold and soaked back. The whole situation was pretty embarrassing. When the check came out, I asked to have my food and single glass of wine comped. The server did not think that was possible but said he would go talk to the manager. Matthew did end up comping my meal, but I felt like that should have been offered immediately after it happened. And the server should be empowered to make these decisions. Obviously, this is a rare experience for this place or any place. That being said, if you want to have good service, you have to be good when things go wrong as well. Hence the 2 stars. read more

Less a quality sushi restaurant, more an Instagram dream. Our reservation was for 7:30 on a Saturday night. We were promptly on time, yet had to wait 15 minutes to be sat. The host was seating guests that arrived after us, before us. Our server was very kind. The sake, wine and drink list was surprisingly robust. And the menu was also very long. We had a wonderful dish that our server recommended -- "the winner". The sushi: subpar. I had six pieces of nigiri & was underwhelmed by each of them. It was not the harmonious balance of fresh, flavorful fish. The restaurant has a lot of dishes with enhanced flavors -- lots of truffle oil and spicy mayo in dishes. This makes for a better modern cuisine than traditional sushi restaurant. It would be more accurate to describe kyojin as such. The sophisticated and trendy decor is inviting, yet upscale. Each plate was decorated to wow each guest. It looked very nice. When we entered at 7:30, the bright lights were a bit abrasive but as we sat there for the next hour, the lights began to dim. By 9:00/9:30 there was a dj playing very fun lounge music and the lights created a much more comfortable atmosphere. I would recommend going for some sake around 9:30/10:00 and to have a few fun bites but not for a quality sushi dinner. Enjoy the music, dance as the night goes on. read more

Highly recommend the chirashi best bang for your money included all the premium fish like uni, scallop, salmon belly, otoro, chu toro, lavender smoked salmon, and monk fish liver ankimo. As for the other plates, if you are craving uni and Hokkaido scallop this is the place for you. The fancy rolls were just ok, feel like they were trying to drown everything in sauce.
