I was tired and hungry after spending my morning in airports and planes. While I was waiting for my takeout order the staff made me feel welcome. This place is very unassuming. If you did not know any better you would just assume that it was a convenience store with a deli counter. It is so much more than that. A convenience store with some basic staples, and a top notch mediterranean takeout place. They do offer some tables for eating there food there but that is about it. Today my office-mates were passing around a delivery menu and my eyes lit up when I realized it was a Kwik Check delivery menu! I had no idea they delivered! ($2 delivery fee if your order is less than $10, a co-worker told me.) Awesome! The only reason I don't go there more is because I'm not crazy about the parking situation, so this solves that! I got the Ninja again and it was fabulous! Good to know the sandwiches are still great now that they have combined (absorbed? not really sure what the story is here) with Petra. The most amazing lunch spot. I hate crowded. It's not typically crowded here, and I usually come in about lunch time. I think it's because the place is so inconspicuously looking what with the outside looking like just a small convenience store. It is so much more than that. It's quiet and there are newspapers on the dining bar facing the outside window. There's a ton of drinks ranging from the normal whatever drink products to things like Aloe Vera drinks (which are so so good if you like drinks with pulp). Then there's that menu. Ok. Here we go: My boyfriend and I got two different things to "share". The Bi Bim Bop Burger makes your depression go away, and if that's not enough to get you to try it, well, just know: the cow that died for that burger would be honored to have been made into such a beautiful and earth shatteringly phenomenal round of heaven. I'm not gonna say what it has in it so just go for yourself. The My Feta Smells Good is so fresh and light it makes you feel like you're at the peak of your health. You're living your best life. It has no meat so you can feel like a good person while you eat, and I don't know anything better than eating guilt free. Also. Get the dessert and the cookie. All of their desserts are good. Personally, I would die for their blackberry cheesecake. And that sugar cookie with m&ms made me forgive my boyfriend for cheating on me in my dream last night. My Kwik Check love affair is over, and there'll be no going back. I know I'm going to catch some flack for this review of everyone's favorite sandwich-and-bibimbop shack, so I feel like I should explain that Kwik Check and I have been on friendly terms since my college days (which are now longer gone than I'd like to admit). Back then, Kwik Check was kind of like the bad boy you take home to meet your parents just to ruffle their feathers. A little rough around the edges, maybe a little dirtier than good taste allows, but still a tasty morsel with a personality all its own. But over the years, the service has gotten slower, and the open kitchen has gotten dirtier, until yesterday, the death knell tolled. Hubby and I called in sandwich orders to go. When we got there, the place was swarming with hipper-than-thou types who'd just rolled out of bed, though they were all seated and there was no line at the counter. I could see our sandwiches sitting on top of the oven, wrapped and ready to go, and I counted five employees working the kitchen while I commenced to wait for at least seven minutes just to get someone to come up to the counter to retrieve our sandwiches. As I waited, I took stock of the situation. One employee was VERY intent on slicing meat ("Look, ma, no gloves!"), another was opening and closing the oven with a look of puzzlement on her face, and two others were taking turns dipping a spoon down into an industrial-sized tub of some condiment that I really hope wasn't on MY sandwich, given that looked like it lived out on the counter and the employees had to reach in at least as far as their elbows to get out whatever was inside. I also had time to take note of the dirty mop bucket sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor (hey, at least they mop, I guess), the dirt caked on the kitchen walls, and the flaccidly pre-cooked meaty pastries in the display case. My husband got a Turk, and remarked that what used to make it so tasty was the fact that they used to toast it -- yesterday, it was just pasty, white, and room temperature -- decidedly UNmelty. And yet, for all of this, I was still willing to give Kwik Check the benefit of the doubt. I'm no superficial flim-flam artist. I love Kwik Check's SOUL. My Bloody Valentine turned out to be a bit too spicy for my taste this time -- but not one to complain, I was gamely picking off the pita and eating the parts that weren't completely doused in habanero sauce, when I saw it: short, black, curly, and stuck in the hummus. A HAIR had crashed this sandwich party. My husband and I both lost our appetites. Subsequently, we became curious about the sanitation grade for Kwik Check, which I couldn't find anywhere on the state health department's website (I tried every possible spelling, and "Petra" because there was some kind of collusion there a couple of years back after the Petra on Madison went out of business). I called Kwik Check to ask. One employee said she didn't know, and went to get her boss, who repeatedly said she didn't understand the question, then finally said that they scored an 88. This may be false (since I can't find any official corroboration), but even if it's true, cleanliness in food preparation is one subject in which I'd certainly shoot for the "A." I guess maybe I'd go back, if I could verify that their cleanliness practices have improved, but until then, I'll just cherish the memories. read more

Do yourself a favor and get a muffaletta. My love affair with the muffaletta is relatively new. In fairness to me, they don't really exist in St. Louis (where I lived until a year and a half ago). In fairness to St. Louis, maybe I wasn't looking for them. St. Louis and Memphis are only separated by about 280 miles of Interstate 55 (and, therefore, the same stretch of the Mississippi River) but, culturally, they are worlds apart. St. Louis is midwestern with heavy European ethnic influences. St. Louisians eat Italian food on the Hill, drink German beer from a myriad of local brewers, and put "product" in their spiked up hair. Memphis is Southern. Memphians eat shrimp and grits, obsess about the SEC, and wear their flat-front shorts well above the knee. Blessedly, Memphis is also half-way to New Orleans: close enough to be a beneficiary of that city's Cajun/Creole cuisine. I love the fact that a significant percentage of restaurants in Memphis serve oysters, gumbo, etoufee, and andouille sausage. This is all stuff that is a rarity up in the Show-Me state. I was properly introduced to the muffaletta last year while in New Orleans for the first time (at Butcher by Cochon). Dynamite. It's essentially a spicy italian deli sandwich with melty cheese and olive tapenade. I was impressed by the giant size of the sandwich, until a friend from Louisiana pointed out that if it weren't that size, then it wouldn't be a muffaletta. After that first taste, I vowed to keep an eye out for muffaletta's back in Memphis. Surprisingly, in a town so heavily influenced by Cajun/Creole cuisine, I discovered that you must actively seek out muffalettas in Memphis. Many of my new friends don't even know what they are, let alone where to get a good one. Luckily, Kwik Chek fills the void. Go there. Don't expect elegant ambiance or coddling service. Put on a straight face and order the Big Muff. Spicy, if you're man enough. Be prepared for the meat sweats. You're welcome. Someday, I'll try other offerings from the eclectic menu. The owner of this place was nice (the person taking my order/making my sandwich was another story), but unfortunately that didn't make up for my experience here. The ninja sandwich I ordered was okay tasting, but nothing special and was small and barely had any meat/veggies inside...(you can see my picture) also, the beef tasted like someone processed it to the point of plastic tasting levels. I am pretty particular about my food, but heck, you would be better off at subway, and for a better price than the $8 I paid. I finally (FINALLY!) got to try the bi bim bop today! Woohoo!!! I'm definitely a fan. I will admit, I was a bit skeptical when I saw the diced apples, carrots, beef, hot sauce, sprouts and greens topped by an over easy egg. Wow. Just wow. There aren't many words to describe this dish. It's nutty and bright and spicy and earthy all in one dish. Each bite has a different taste and texture- and the heat behind it all is perfection. I love that this dish isn't spicy just for the sake of being spicy. I've never been one to get on board that whole train as I am pretty particular when it comes to spicy dishes. If there aren't any other flavors mingling with that heat- sorry- you lose. This dish achieves the perfect combo that I am always in search of and rarely find. My husband went the Mediterranean route and ordered the hummus and pita plate along with a gyro and baklava for dessert. The pita was delicious- I was surprised that it was seasoned. My husband liked the gyro meat, but wasn't sold on lettuce being any part of the gyro equation. In honesty, I think it ruined the whole experience for him. The baklava more than made up for it. It's up there with the baklava at Casablanca- and I love me some Casablanca. Regardless, we both said we'd go back just for the baklava and bi bim bop. I would never have expected one of my favorite rice/noodle dishes would come in a package that looked anything like the Kwik Check. Go figure. read more

I admit, back when I was in college (late 90s/early 2000s), I was afraid to come here. There were rumors of the staff being mean, and not letting you ask questions or change anything about your sandwich, so I avoided it despite the raves I heard about how good it was. Now that I live a 5-minute drive away, I decided to check it out. I'm so glad I did. I've been there twice in the past several weeks, and have tried two different sandwiches: the Falafel and the Veggie Delight. Now, some of the staff is somewhat surly and really couldn't care less about you, but it's worth it. The dudes who make the sandwiches are sweet, but all the ladies have someplace they'd rather be, LOL! Anyway, the Falafel was one of the tastiest I've had, due to the copious amounts of cucumber sauce. Oh man. Sooo good. Falafel can be a little dry, but not this way! The Veggie Delight was also good, but the amount of sauce was a little too much, and overwhelmed the rest of the contents. I'll probably stick to the Falafel as my usual, mostly because I'm still terrified to ask for less sauce on the veggie. The last time I was in, I couldn't resist picking up a plate of multi-colored mochi treats, under the guise of "saving them for later"... HA. I ate them all. I don't know whether they make those in-house or what, but I'm a mochi nut so I'll be looking for those next time :-) Leaving off one star because of the staff. Typical Friday night for me is to find a place to eat that I have never been to before. Prefer not to cook after another long week of work. After Trolley Night, figured Grubhub app would give me some local spots to check out. At first, I assumed it was some gas station. After some research, found out it was a deli/convienence place. This is a place that would shock many people. From the outside most wouldn't believe that it served food. However, this is an excellent sandwich and food shop. First, service is slow. Just get over it. Now that we're past that, their Muffalatta and gyro sandwiches are awesome. Also love their vegetarian sandwich. We have friends come over and we all go here and pick up sandwiches. We then go home and sit on the porch and talk, listen to music, and thoroughly enjoy ourselves. My friends like seeing me, but they love eating from here. read more

When Mediterranean - Korean restaurant Petra closed in Midtown a few months ago, I was worried that their bi bim bop would be gone forever. Thankfully, Petra's owner (and a lot of their most loved dishes) have moved to the Kwik Check on Madison. The Kwik Check is one of midtown's favorite low-key lunch spots. It's part convenience store, part lunch counter. They sell the usual mini-mart goods (chips, drinks, cigarettes, newspapers, beer) along side deli sandwiches, homemade pasta salad, gyros, and the delicious bi bim bop. One of the tips on Foursquare recommends at the counter and checking out the customers (a veritable Who's Who of Midtown) while pretending to read the Flyer. Bi Bim Bop is made with savory beef (or chicken or tofu), cucumbers, carrots, bean sprouts, greens and a sunny side up egg served over rice doused in spicy red Korean sauce. It's crunchy, earthy, and the sauce gives a nice little kick in the mouth. read more

After hearing much about this place and seeing the decent amount of good reviews it has, I have to say that I am not that impressed. Me and the girlfriend went there on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty empty. I ordered The Greek hoagie and a falafel plate, while she had the Steak Sandwich. While I can't speak for the Korean side of the business, the sandwich part was just OK. The Greek was just alright, better than Subway but nothing I can't make myself at home for much cheaper. The taste was very average and the size very small. The Steak Sandwich was much better, but not "I have to come back!" good, and again, it was very small. Perhaps enough for a lunch, but for dinner? You will either stay hungry or spend a lot of money. The Falafel plate was also just OK. The sauces were alright, the bread good, but the falafel pieces themselves were very dry and unappealing. Overall, it was a very underwhelming experience, but I may come back to try the Korean part and see if I have better luck there. read more

I had my first Kwik Check experience recently and it was wonderful. I ordered the Bi Bim Bop (at my date's suggestion) and got it with chicken. I was skeptical, because I don't like eggs and was told a giant sunny side egg was on top. I was ok with it once I was told it would be cooked within the sizzling bowl and more like the egg in a fried rice. The dish was incredible! It had just the right amount of spice, tender and delicious vegetables and a good amount of rice and chicken. It was awesome. My boyfriend ordered a sandwich that was equally delicious and I kept stealing bites. I can't wait to go back and try about 4 different sandwiches from the menu and another Bi Bim Bop. What a true find!! This is a dream if you enjoy delicious food! Kwik Check is located in the most unsuspecting of places--most of it is a convenience​ store. Half of it appears to serve Mediterranean food and the other half some Korean food. I came for bibimbop. I was not expecting what I received. I would gladly return to try the pajeon and other goods. The beef biibimbop had no kimchee but did have the red paste, vegetables cooked in sesame oil, carrots, sprouts, and a fried egg. Now if you're grossed out by runny yolk, just tell them. I'm not and I gladly mixed it up to cook it some more. The dish is served sizzling hot in traditional bowls. The chopsticks were served stuck into the rice which is a big no-no culturally speaking but I'm not Korean so I'm not offended by it and there's really no where else to put it because the bowl itself is so hot. Flavors were all there. I'd easily try this again with tofu. Thanks for the welcomed break from traditional southern fare. read more

I had a sandwich that was served to me on the same bread i get at the grocery store, the same meat I could buy at the grocery store, and italian dressing. Im convinced that's all they put on it. I also thought it was overpriced- being that I could probably make six identical sandwiches for the same amount of money. The way to order was confusing, and I thought the girl who made my sandwich was rude. The atmosphere was also bad, but I was expecting that. I was a bit skeptical of this place but when I saw some other reviews I expected the food to be good...for a convenience store. But after eating there I'm a true believer that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover so to speak. A few months ago I tried Korean food for the very first time in NYC (in Korea Town). I went crazy for the bi bim bop...it's cooked with slightly different vegetables depending on where you go...but the concept is the same. Hot pot with rice, spicy sauce, various veggies, and some kind of meat/tofu. So I definitely had something to compare the Kwik Check version to...and it was good. This thing comes out HOT (temperature-wise) and it does not let up...because the pot keeps the food warm. I found myself blowing on the food with every bite I took. Can't wait to try it on a cold day because it does warm you up from the inside out. It's delicious...and the sauce has just the right amount of kick. The egg over easy is like icing on the cake for me. My husband tried the gyro and the meat was very tender and juicy. It comes with a variety of sauces...we tried the habanero. The pita itself is a bit thin to my liking but still all in all very good. It is a bit of a wait if you're waiting on certain dishes...but no worries. The food is well worth the wait. read more

I've never had a better muffuletta in Memphis - I always go with the veggie but I think it's a safe assumption that the meat varieties are just as delicious. Everyone here is incredibly friendly, even when you roll in three minutes before the sandwich counter closes and order five things. I can also wholeheartedly recommend the wraps, the gyros and the bi bim bop. I love coming in, grabbing a flyer and eating in or grabbing something on the go. The service is super fast. My only complaint is the complaint I have with most convenience store type locations in Memphis - can a girl get some Arizona tea up in here? I love hole-in-the-wall restaurants and especially how Yelp helps me discover them. This place looks like the inside of an old gas station convenience store that was stripped. It is so dingy it's kinda funny and the whole experience is confusing and unorganized. The menu has Korean, Greek, and American food so at first glance, it seems questionable. Your order is taken at the counter and no one tells you where to wait for your food or where to pay. There are drinks in the fridge that I guess you help yourself to and snacks on a separate shelf as well. When our food was ready, someone shouted out the names of the items we ordered and brought them over to our table. No clue where to find napkins or extra utensils, haha. We paid at the counter where you could buy packs of gum or Kwik Chek T-shirts. I asked where the bathroom was. The guy behind the counter sheepishly pointed toward some stalls. The bathroom was so dirty and tiny that I had to use the toilet at a 90 degree angle from the normal position. It was pretty comical. Bottom line though, the food is pretty darn cheap and good for what you pay. Get the bulgogi burger! The bibimap is also aight but not as great as you'd get at an actual Korean restaurant. The Kwik Check closed for just one day last week, due to unpaid taxes. Within hours it was all over the news and all over Facebook and my favorite Memphis blog. Memphians were taking the news pretty hard, me included. Then they opened up the next day and it was business as usual. Thank goodness! Now the Kwik Check is a convenience store as well as a deli, and it looks a little sketchy, but don't judge a book by it's cover. You'll find some of the best sandwiches in town here. Especially their Muffalettas. Ooolala. But they also have some other great stuff too, creative sandwiches with creative names. Like the Bloddy Valentine - hummus, habenero sauce, swiss and parmesan cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, mushroom, bell pepper, jalapeno and sprouts in a pita bread. And the Hey Zeus - turkey, Roast Beef, feta cheese, bell pepper, onion, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, lemon herb dressing, spices and oriental habenero sauce Yeah baby! First off, let me say that this place has been a midtown staple for years. I grew up in the area and have been going here for over a decade. That being said, their gyros were by far the greatest in the city. Unfortunately they have gone EXTREMELY downhill. I can think of at least three instances where my food has been messed up, the gyros recently have been poorly made, and don't even get me started with their new staff. SO RUDE. I worked in the food industry for years and never in my life have I encountered a restaurant that would rather argue with the customer over whether or not their sandwich is made "how it always is" rather than just address and fix whatever the problem may be. I hate that they have gone downhill but if you are able to brush under the rug horribly poor customer service combined with poor food quality then sure Kwik Chek is great by those standards. I'll foreground that I went to Kwik Check to try bibimbap for the first time. I'd heard the urban legend that bibimbap was Michael Jackson's favorite food, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Now I know. It's simple yet complex and SO delicious. The Kwik Check bibimbap wasn't anything super fancy, but it was just satisfying on every conceivable level. Their kimchi is really good. I liked Kwik Check because the atmosphere is as relaxed as it gets, and they serve excellent food. The counter service hit the perfect note in being laid-back, friendly, and surprisingly responsive. As I said it was my first time trying the delicious dish. The guy at the counter saw me initially picking at my food, tasting tiny bites from each section, and he was cool enough quickly come by and indicate that it's better when you mix it up. They seem to specialize in take-out sandwiches, but I'd suggest eating your bibimbap right there in that heavy hot stone bowl. So many thanks to Kwik Check. I am so furious right now. I met a friend for lunch today at 11am and grabbed several items from the grab and go cooler and went and checked out with a young lady at the counter. My lunch was $18.01 (deviled eggs, potato salad, dolmadas, and greek meatballs) and I paid cash. Soon after the young lady went to work at the restaurant next door (Crazy Noodles) and an older woman was now at the register. My friend paid for her food with the older lady, and while checking out the older woman asked my friend if she was also paying for my food. My friend told her I had already paid with the other lady. Throughout our entire hour of lunch, the old woman just watched us. Now, if you have been here to eat before, you also know that you aren't given a fork or napkin UNTIL YOU PAY! I was using the little white fork and napkin the entire time I ate. As I was leaving, the old woman stopped me and told me I needed to pay for my food. No, I told her, I paid $18.01 for this lunch. Look at your sales receipt. But she shook her head and told me no I didn't. It was so insulting to be accused of stealing, especially after buying so much food!
