I think I have found my new favorite Indian restaurant in Austin. I haven't had a proper South Indian meal in US for a while, and this restaurant satisfied it. We went there for a weekend lunch. They had an unlimited buffet that day. I believe it's only for the weekend. There was a $20 veg buffet and $25 non-veg buffet. But it was different from a traditional buffet, instead they just serve you as many times as you ask. The parotta was very flaky and very well made. It was perfect. Mutton briyani was very flavorful. The chicken and mutton gravy paired very well with the parotta. My friend had the vegetarian meal and she enjoyed it too. Rose milk was a very good dessert to end the meal.

This morning, we went to Kuppama for a South Indian breakfast and found it close to our home. Ambience looks decent. Service was decent. We ordered idli sambhar, ghee masala dosa, and Pomfret fish, along with filter coffee. The idli, dosa, and fish were all okay, seems not fresh. Also, the filter coffee was a letdown as it tasted too bitter for our liking. Overall, Kuppama is not a place for a South Indian breakfast.

We came in knowing we wanted dosa but weren't sure which one to order, so we asked for recommendations for dosa and other menu items. They suggested the Masala Ghee Dosa, along with the Chicken Gramathu Varuval and Kongu Mutton Biryani, a biryani from the Kongu region so we ordered those. We were also recommended the Nikkah Mutton Biryani and Pallipalayam Chicken (Boneless), but two biryanis and two chicken dishes felt like too much, so I'll try those another time. The Masala Ghee Dosa was absolutely amazing--probably the best I've had. The chutneys were excellent, the dosa was perfectly crisp, and the potato filling was delicious. The Chicken Gramathu Varuval was tasty, though I wish it had come with rice or bread. We ordered poori to go with it, which worked well since we love poori, though paratha or naan might have been a better match. The Kongu Mutton Biryani was a standout. Its flavor reminded me of Bangladeshi tehari, which I love, and the mutton was cooked to perfection--tender and soft. I'd definitely order all of these again. My son enjoyed the Kids Chicken Fried Rice from the kids' menu, and while the mango lassi was just okay to me, my son loved it and finished the whole thing--so no complaints there! The service was kind, quick, and polite. I appreciated the hand-washing stations, which were a thoughtful touch, avoiding the need to visit the restroom. The place wasn't overly busy, but there was a good number of diners, mostly Indian families, along with plenty of takeout orders. The only area for improvement is the ambiance--a bit of beautification would elevate the atmosphere and make it feel classier. That said, we'll definitely be back to try the Nikkah Mutton Biryani and Pallipalayam Chicken!

Nothing flashy about the place, but we are here for the food. I ordered Pallipalayam Chicken and butter chicken with spicy naan. Naan was nothing special, but the chickens were definitely tasty! Though I would say it was a bit pricey, the food itself was pretty good and they had a great veg deal for 13.99 unlimited veg curries which would've been a steal. Would definitely try them again. :)

My husband and I visited Kuppanna on Sankranti during our recent visit to Austin. My husband is from Chennai and raved about the sankranti special thali at this location which he stumbled across on instagram. Kaalakki: very authentic Tamil dish. Over easy cooked eggs topped with raw onions green chillis. Very tasty. Hubby said it's super yummy and close to how it's served in Chennai. Sankranti special veg meals consisted of a wide variety of veggie curries, porial, sambar, dal's, papad, pulihora, and what not. Flavour blast and the best!! Hubby had the Non veg thali, omg this was out of the world. They served all varieties of meats including chicken curry, mutton, fish, prawns, salana, and all Chennai delicacies. My husband is born in Chennai and he's a major food and sucker for Tamil food. Having this authentic Tamil and Telugu on Sankranti was an amazing experience for us both. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish. I was in food come and had to unbutton Ofcourse Chennai filter kaapi to end the meal is a must. Ambiance is great, very lively. Service was very quick and prompt.

A welcome addition of authentic South Indian food scene in Austin- Kuppanna is a new restaurant with a mix of traditional and modern dishes. It's evident they create a "close to home" feel with their food, with an excellent blend of seasonings and great spice levels. Glad to have another South Indian place in (otherwise limited) Austin, with plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, plus reasonable prices. They are located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking.

MY RATING: 3.5 MEAL: Dinner ORDER TYPE: Dine-in EST.: September 28th, 2023 FIRST LOCATION: Plano, Texas on December 8th, 2022 MY ORDER EXPERIENCE: I visited the new Tamil (Indian) cuisine. The establishment was big and lively. We were a party of 3 and within 5 mins we were given a table. We were served with bottled water and were handed the menu. The menu had limited items as it was a Soft Launch. Upon scanning for a bit, we ordered the following from different sections: All the items were served sooner than expected which was nice. EGGETARIAN Kalaki - RECOMMENDED This was the first item that was served and my favorite from the dishes that we ordered. It was made from eggs, onions, cilantro, and other Indian spices. It was a half-cooked omelet which was spicy and tasted great. VEG APPETIZER These were bought at the same time when Kalaki was bought. Curry Leaves Podi Idly The presentation of Curry Leaves Podi Idli was appealing where it topped with curry leaves and cilantro around it and sambar on the side. They were crispy and tasted like vada but unfortunately the taste was ruined because the salt was missing. We felt like the salt was neither in the batter nor in the podi itself. Gobi 65 Then we had Gobi 65 which looked great and tasted good. It's been a while since I have not had GOBI 65 and this experience served it. The gobi was well cooked and crispy. BREADS Egg Kothu Parotta As we were juggling around on what to order for the main dish between Fried Rice and Kothu Parotta, the staff person helped us by recommending the house special Kothu Parotta. So, we went with it. The Egg Kothu Parotta arrived in a bit. I was curious to try this dish as I have seen my friends ordering Chicken Kothu Parotta at a different place before. The quantity was enormous as I had to ask for a To Go box later. It came with raita and salan. It looked great but the taste did not meet the expectation. It was bland and was not flavorful. I will have to rethink if I want to order it next time. My friend ordered Chicken Kothu Parotta and said it was good. Overall, the food tasted alright. The customer service was great as we were welcomed well and constantly checked on us if we needed anything. The place seemed casual and limited with seating capacity. Later, the restaurant owner himself came down and chatted with us. He asked how the dishes tasted and asked for an honest review which we gave. He told us that he would make the improvements going forward and did not charge for the Egg Kothu Parotta which was nice. He also shared the history of Kuppanna and its other locations. Also, the prices were reasonable. It would be good if the dishes had signs for meal preferences on the menu and explained what ingredients, calories, and spice levels for each dish as some of the dish names were new to me. I would be curious to see if they continue with the same momentum in taste. I would like to go back to try their Ennai Kathrikai Puzhi Kulambu.

Found a pin in the food, kothu parotta . That shows the quality of the food. Taste was good though, chef seems to be good

Food: Egg Kotthu out of this world would come back for. Very flavorful, texture was very good Dosa - good crispy, enjoyed it Mutton Biryani- way too much fat, coated every grain of rice, not enough meat, my family was surprised when after one serving they realized, what there is no meat left? The flavor was not balanced. Service: our waitress was very nice but not sure if she was new or just needs more training. We were confused when right after ordering we were only given two plates. We received the egg Kotthu first and we wanted to share and eat as an appetizer but not enough plates. We realized it was because we ordered two dosa so I think she thought that would be the other two plates we would use. Makes sense in theory but it was confusing for us and would have been a nice touch if it was explained. My spoon was dirty still had clear food debris, luckily there was another roll of silverware on the table so I just used that. We very nicely and kindly brought up our concerns on the Mutton Biryani. We were told that is just Tamil Nadu style and that is how it is suppose to be. Closer to the end of the meal my mother decided she still really wanted to try medu vada. She ordered it thinking we would get the full order 3 pieces. We received one. We were confused so we inquired and ultimately decided it's fine we will just take this one. In this same conversation my husband asked for the bill. He handed over his credit card and the waitress charged us right then. She asked if we wanted receipt and he said no. I had a funny feeling so I asked if we could get it. After some effort she was able to print it. She walked away and was standing maybe 4 tables away. I could see her in my peripheral vision. A few minutes later I noticed she charged us for both 1 medu vada and the plate. She must have known because before I could fully request her assistance she was walking towards our table speaking two tables away saying she would take care of it. Maybe it was an honest mistake but it just felt very off to us. We were not terribly upset we were just trying to be fair and honest. Maybe the miscommunication and the back and forth caused this. The part that felt off is she seemed to know already. TLDR: egg Kotthu is very tasty must get. Mutton Biryani, pass. If we are in the area and hungry we may give this place another try but don't think we will go out of our way (30 minute drive) to visit.

The food is flavorful and authentic, with a menu that offers a wide variety of traditional dishes. Each dish is prepared with fresh ingredients and aromatic spices, creating a delightful dining experience. Will come back again!

There was one customer waiting, and not another person. I waited about ten minutes. My son loves chicken Tikka masala, so we ordered him some. It is spicy. Beyond the spice the chicken was tough, so even if the spice was toned down the chicken wasn't great. The tandoori chicken is nice and flavorful and tender. $17 for three drumsticks and two thighs might be a bit steep. Overall not an overwhelmingly good experience.

Very pushy, seems they are still 'soft launching' despite reviews going back to at least November 2025 -Only beer and wine If you can set aside abysmal service then I would say give this place a try, as the food was at least very, very good. My three friends and I came here for our 'monthly' dinner out. We made reservations but it didn't appear they were necessary. There is plenty of parking which is a major plus. The inside is beautiful and clean and the tables are BIG which is so nice for family style situations. The first waitress that assisted us was friendly and helpful. We inquired about cocktails and she stated they only served wine and beer. When we asked about the wine list, there wasn't one, and she wasn't able to tell us whites from red and had to go get her notes. While waiting for drinks, a second waitress arrived to take our food order. She seemed very insistent on recommending specific appetizers: mosaru vade, cauliflower varuthathu, and the goat sukka. Everyone in the group seemed fine with those options, so that's what we ordered. Our drinks arrived with a third person who identified herself as the bar manager. She stated cocktails would be 'coming soon' despite reviews from February saying the same thing, and asked if we had any suggestions. One friend suggested a cocktail with mint, I suggested a cocktail with pomegranate, as one of the appetizers had it as an ingredient. We were then told that nether of those suggestions were particularly helpful, as a lot of the ingredients she needed weren't available in India? It was an odd convo and its possible we misunderstood her. By the time ordering entrees came around, I'd started to hear other tables being told certain items on the menu provided were not available. When the same waitress that suggested appetizers came to take our entrees, she didn't even ask what we wanted and instead told us we should order the chicken tikka and the palak paneer. One friend tried to order kal dosa and was told they didn't have it, at which point the waitress again told us what things we should order and then stated 'this is our soft launch, so we don't have some things'. I'd planned on ordering Mangalore Squid for my entree but realized at this point that despite the size of the menu, it was clear that they were only cooking and serving specific items. Everything that we ordered was delicious, beautifully served, and came out hot and quick. I have zero complaints about the food. Once the bill came, the same pushy waitress put down a giant, laminated QR code and insisted we leave a review. We paid, she left, then looped back around, tapped on the QR code and said 'You leaving a review is the most important thing to us' then walked off again. She then came back a third time, said 'are you done with this??' and snatched the QR code so some other table could be pressured into a review I assume. As we were leaving, we merged with another group outside that was discussing their meal and commenting on things reflecting our experience. I told them I could tell them exactly what they ordered despite not being at their table, and then rattled off what we'd been told to order; it was item for item. So my main complaint here is print out a menu that reflects what you're serving. You can't 'soft launch' forever and its actually not fair to your wait staff to set up a menu that results in them having to tell people multiple times that something isn't available while also simultaneously pressuring the table into ordering what IS available. It really tainted the entire experience for me personally.
