I can't believe that it took 4 years of living in Boston to make it to Kupels! I'm from Westchester, NY originally, so I have low expectations of bagels made more than 50 miles away from New York. These bagels hit the spot and were indistinguishable from ones I've eaten in NY. I went to Kupels on a Saturday morning around 10:30am. It was busy, but not packed. I ordered a Brookline Village (smoked salmon, tomato, red onions, and cream cheese) on an everything bagel, a coffee, a pumpernickel bagel, a sesame bagel, and an apricot hamentashcen. The cashier was really nice and patient as I made my decision. There were a few picnic tables outside and a couple seats inside at the window (bar-style seating), but I decided to take my food to go. The sandwich was filled generously with all the accoutrements. The coffee was just alright. The bagels were all big and puffy, not thin. The hamentaschen was good. There are tons of pastries to choose from, so I would probably go with something different next time. Overall, Kupel's has great food and staff are friendly. Prices and service are very good. Very fast turnaround despite the busy morning. However the bagels are dense and flavorless. They taste barely better than toasted grocery store bagels. The fillings are very basic. Got a egg sandwich but probably better to stick to cream cheese if I'm in this area again and need a cheap quick breakfast because you can't mess up cream cheese. Would definitely not go out of the way to get a bagel here. The comparison with Bagelsaurus, which is an actually incredible bagel place, made me laugh. Need a place to get amazing bagels in Boston? Go to Kupel's! Went here a little after 10 am thinking majority of the bagels would be gone and I was so happy that was not the case. This place was packed with endless bagel options, items in the bakery, and drinks. It took about fifteen minutes for the order to finish so expect to wait, but it's so worth it. I had heard so much about the bagels at this place and decided to check them out on a Saturday morning. The place had a huge line up outside but after inquiry, I quickly learned that you order inside and then wait for your order outside. Inside, the line moved quickly. It was a little difficult to follow how to order and when I got to the cashier, I had no idea what to order. Thankfully I had read earlier about the Lox cream cheese so decided to order a bagel with Lox. They also have day old bagels and you can get a bunch for $5.99 and a second bag for free! I picked up a bag of poppyseed bagels and baked goods. I waited around 10ish minutes outside for the order, which wasn't too bad given how busy the place is. Taking one star off due to lack of available menu at the counter (there were menus, just not near the cashier). As a NJ native, I'm pretty picky about my bagels, but I love visiting Kupel's and never leave here disappointed! As far as bagels go, they're nice and doughy/soft on the inside, while being slightly crisp on the outside. My favorite is their sesame bagel, perfect with some scallion cream cheese. Whenever I visit I make sure to pick up their day-old bagels for a "buy one get one free" deal, making around 15 bagels cost $6 total. I also am a huge fan of their half moon cookies, but if you don't have a sweet tooth stay away from them because they're very sugary. One small complaint I have is about their lox cream cheese. I've had this spread at many other bagel shops where you can see chunks of lox in the cream cheese, but at Kupel's, the lox is completely reduced down to a paste, which is not really the texture that I'm looking for. I noticed this in their Fenway lox sandwich especially, where small chunks of lox in the sandwich would've made for a fresher, tastier experience... but maybe that's just me! read more

ordered a good ol' cinnamon raisin bagel! the base itself was solid; it had that slightly sweet, molasses-y flavor to it which i really appreciated! the whole wheat and two(!) varieties of raisins also added a lovely dimension of flavor. moving onto the cons...the bagel was a little more doughy and dense than i would have preferred. it also could've used more notes of cinnamon. and raisin. (it is in fact a cinnamon raisin bagel). felt like i could count the amount of raisins that were in the bagel on one hand. but they do donate a good portion of their bagels and baked goods to the houseless! that's really cool! read more

As a native New Yorker, I was skeptical when I first read about Kupel's. However, it was recommended to me by another native New Yorker who lived in the Brookline area, so I trusted her opinion. Well, I was not disappointed! Kupel's bagels are pretty dang good and I'm not ashamed to admit it. We had ordered a half dozen for the 4 of us, so we had leftovers the next day. They were still nice and soft! We ordered online for pick up and our order was ready in 30 minutes. Pick up was easy and I was able to buy some more cream cheese on the spot without a line. It was July 4th, so I'm not sure who is lining up for bagels at 8am on a holiday, but I was in/out in under 5 minutes. Staff were very friendly and helpful. read more

The baseline bagel is good - good size, good texture, they're soft, not too dense, but all the flavors were lacking, bland and left us wanting more. Whole wheat everything - it has a different combination of everything bagel seasonings such as caraway seeds and oats. It was lacking the pungent onion/garlic stank of your typical everything bagel Onions bagel - pretty standard but again, was very mild and lacking flavor. The onions must be mixed in because there was nothing on the exterior? Chive cream cheese - good texture and creaminess, but needs MORE chive. If ordering with cream cheese there is a good bagel to schmear ratio and they don't over toast if you select that option. We order a container of tuna to-go, along with 2 challah rolls and a raspberry hammantashen, which had an interesting lemon flavor on the crust, but didn't quite do it for me. The tuna, like everything else, was bland. Good thing we got it to go and could jazz it up at home. Challah rolls were great, definitely get those. Convenient online ordering for covid safe pickup. I went to an event that served a bunch of bagels from Kupel's. Being from New Jersey, I've been trying to find a local bagel shop and I'm very particular with my bagels. For Boston standards, this place is pretty solid. The inside was fluffy, but it was a bit hard to bite through the whole bagel once there was lox in between the halves. I've also tried their bagel sandwiches which I totally recommend - lox is my favorite so I tried the "Brookline Bagel" and it's amazing. They don't skimp on fillings! Perhaps too much cream cheese for my taste. I haven't tried their other items but I hear they are good too. Another thing to note is that consistency is great here, I've ordered several times and it never disappoints. Non-Food Stuff: The customer service is TERRIBLE - if I took that into consideration the rating would be much lower. Every time I go there the employees treat you like they are doing you a favor. The layout of the store is weird, and difficult to understand where you have to order, or pick-up order vs pay, and the employees don't make this easier on you. As someone from New York, I was kind of skeptical about trying a bagel place. There was a huge line this morning l, which was reassuring. This huge line also resulted in a decent wait time for this bagel. I ordered a Cleveland Circle, which comes with Lox, cream cheese, tomato, and onions. The bagel was surprisingly satisfying with each bite. The one thing I do like is that they fill the bagel decently with all the toppings stated. It was a good combination of tomatoes onions and Lox smothered in cream cheese. In terms of the bagel itself, I had no complaints with it as it had a good texture and wasn't too hard. As a sidenote, the sandwich did cost around $11. In terms of pandemic precautions, all the workers are wearing masks and they do tell you to wait outside. Overall, I will definitely try this place again if I wanted another bagel. My goto is the Washington Sq: Jalapeño cream cheese, smoked salmon, lettuce, capers, tomato, and i always ask to add some onions in there. I came here with two of my friends on a Sunday around 9am - pretty busy and a long line but went by very quickly. Prices range is a little big but the ones on the higher end have quite a sizable amount of salmon, so quite reasonable. All of the staff wears masks and ask customers without masks to stand outside so A+ for COVID protocols :) Loved how everything is named after Boston T stops. I hate doing this, I've gone to Kupel's for years and have loved it. STILL love their bagels and bagel sandwiches. But, I don't know what is happening, maybe less people are buying and they have too much stock sitting around? I have gotten into the habit of ordering a bagel sandwich, a challah, and a pastry on Thursdays to have for the weekend. I have the bagel when it arrives, and it has a moldy spot. Three times now. Same with the challah. And we've tried it the same day we ordered it, and I taste mold. It's so dissapointing. I'm going to have to take a break for a while and get our challah elswhere. read more
