It is very much a chain restaurant, and it has that polished, standardized feel to it. I've eaten here a number of times, and while I wouldn't say the food stands out above some of the other Chinese restaurants in the area, everything I've had has always been good. I've never gotten anything that tasted bad or had an order come out wrong. It's just consistently solid. One sleeper hit on their menu, though, is the lava buns. They're warm egg custard buns like you'll sometimes find at dim sum places, and they are really good. Honestly, they're probably one of my favorite things here. I've even stopped by after already having dinner just to get an order to take home for dessert. They're definitely best hot, so I'd recommend eating them pretty quickly. The design of the restaurant is probably more memorable than the main food. They really committed to a specific industrial, techno-chic look with neon signs, animated menu boards, exposed metal, acrylic panels, textured wall details, and movies playing by the bar. The theme is carried throughout the whole place really well. At the same time, all of the metal and harder surfaces can make the inside feel a little cold and unwelcoming. There isn't much traditional indoor seating. Most of the seating inside is at the bar, with additional tables outside under some shade. Because of that, it's probably not my first choice for sitting down for lunch during a hot Houston day, but it works really well as a pickup or takeout spot. The staff has always been friendly, and they have a good system for getting people in and out. The parking lot is a little small, but since a lot of people seem to be picking up food, spots turn over pretty quickly. Overall, The Rice Box is convenient, dependable, and does what it does well. It definitely feels like a chain, but the design has a strong personality and the food is consistently good. It's not my favorite Chinese food in the Heights, but I've never had a bad experience here. And the lava buns are absolutely worth getting.

Cozy, well decorated restaurant with the perfect brunch atmosphere!…read more This place can get busy especially on the weekend, and so I highly recommend getting a reservation! Came here for brunch and they have a unique menu that puts an Asian spin to some classic dishes. A dish I will never stop raving about is the scallion waffle. It comes with a sambal honey butter that pairs deliciously with the crispy waffle. You can add the orange chicken for $10 and honestly, worth because it's crunchy, sweet, and adds a nice protein component to the waffle. Two other apps I really loved were the crab dip (which comes with a sweet and spicy jelly super super good) and the shrimp ceviche style app (can't recall the name but super tangy and fresh) my only complaint about the shrimp is that the cracker it comes with is way too salty. Overall, great menu!

Gotta give shoutout to the decor and ambiance. It's super cozy. Probably weird to say but I loved the tiles in the hallway to restroom. So the food. Outside of the novelty the flavors are just ok. It's cool to have these Asian twists to western food but nothing really wowed me. Even tho it's popular I'd say pass on the chicken and waffles. The butter was delicious and the waffle was crispy but I'd rather have a regular scallion pancake. And the orange chicken was like any other. Think I prefer the smaller crispier pieces u get at other places. They do give u good amount of meat tho since it whole thigh. The best thing was the shrimp toast. It's like honey walnut shrimp but with toast. They have a layer of shrimp mousse and the sauce on top of toast. Unique way to serve a classic flavor. The hamburger fried rice was solid. Like a Big Mac but fried rice. My mom said it tasted like Zatarin dirty rice. Not bad but yeah I'd give it another shot to try their brunch menu which looks better and has more options. But first impression is that it's alright. Didn't hate it. Didn't love it. And it's out of my way so I doubt I'd go again.

Had a 8pm resy but grabbed a seat at the bar....took a while to be waited on, but once we were, the service was so stellar, it was worth the wait! His name escapes me.... Shout out to this sassy waiter that barked at zaddy, who had asked for soy sauce, for addressing him improperly--guess bae shouldn't have assumed. The star of the show was definitely the whole fried fish--even if you're not a "fish person" please get this! Delicate and tender on the inside and light and crispy on the outside! The wings are also a must have! I would've liked for the skin to remain crispy--even while doused on the yummy sauce. The brisket fried rice brought everything together, but we wondered if the brisket actually showed up? Maybe it was playing dress up--Casper, the friendly ghost? Virtually invisible! Would've been nice to have more! I don't know what my fellow yelpers are talking about when they mention everything is salty here. It was all salted perfectly! I'm elated this place came across my radar! Until next time!

Why 5 stars? Because this is an excellent combination of thai and bbq…read more --- --- --- Up in the north burbs, we recently had a similar fusion concept (thai + BBQ) open up and we really love it. It's not a combo I get bored of easily, so I was happy to try another rendition. And I'm happy to say I really enjoyed it. We started off by sharing the brisket egg rolls and the brisket curly fries - both were home runs. No notes. I really wanted to try the brussels sprouts too but was overruled on that. And then I ordered a bowl with pad thai and brisket. The brisket was very thinly sliced and I'd call it more "good" than "great", but the pad thai noodles were absolute heaven. Some of the best I've had in a long time, to be honest. A cool thing about the restaurant is that there's a secret door that takes you into a space with a completely different vibe - somewhat of an upscale speakeasy situation. We were the only people in the place, but I could definitely see how they could utilize both spaces, whether just want some fast casual-ish dining or kind of a fancy night out. A really unique concept on both fronts and I hope to visit again!

I love the food here!…read more This restaurant is close to my job so I often order Uber eats for lunch. The green mango salad and kimchi are tied for what I love the most. The green mango salad has glass noodles, so it makes the dish very filling. It's bursting with flavors, and hits all the notes...salty, sweet and savory. The kimchi is outstanding! So much so that I no longer order the side but opt for the Jarred option, it's bursting with flavor. The cabbage has a wonderful texture, it's a perfect balance. The curry puff was good, I would have preferred a more pronounced curry flavor but the flakiness made up for it. The orange chicken was good, I would have liked more sauce but it was still very good. All in all it was a great meal!
