Feeling the need to update my review of over 8 years ago here is a more recent lunch and dinner report. For dinner, I shared an order of spring rolls ($6) and then individually tried the shaking beef speciality for $18. Both food items were delicious. The filet mignon cubes seared in a wok with the onions, garlic and rice were pleasurable to eat along with the surprisingly good tasting kale salad giving me some roughage. I can see why shaking beef is a specialty here. Good table service too. Lunch was a few weeks later with a group of 6. For that meal I went back to the old tried and true banh mi sandwich of sautéed beef for $10 adding an order of fryer for $3.50 and a cup of Vietnamese egg drop soup. Their banh mi's here are excellent. I love the baguettes used and the ingredients of the meat, cucumbers, pickled veggies and Vietnamese mayo were delicious. The fries here are above average in taste and the soup is very different than the Chinese version of the same name but equally delicious. One big difference between the lunch and dinners visits was the noise. Dinner was normal with conversation being easy. Lunch time was a mad house. The interior was full of people and the only way you could communicate with a waitress or a seat mate was practically yelling at each other. It was a big turnoff. Hughie's is a popular place to eat for obvious reasons however that popularity can also work against you eating here during busy times. read more

I definitely had to leave a review! I stumbled upon this place for lunch, and let me tell you I was impressed. First, the customer service was outstanding. As soon as I sat down, someone brought me water. Then, as the waiter took my order and turned to walk away, another gentleman was already dropping off the soda I had ordered. The attention to detail and teamwork were incredible. The food came out surprisingly fast, and everything was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. And when I say fresh, I mean fresh. The kale salad with the homemade citrus dressing was absolutely amazing I could have drank the dressing by itself. The shaken beef, egg, fried rice, and spring roll were all delicious and cooked perfectly. The hot oil was also fantastic, with just the right amount of spice. I've been to Hughies a handful of times and it's always been really good. The food is delicious and the service is good. They had a seasonal menu and I tried the shrimp curry rice. I had the option to make it spicy and I give it a 8.5/10. They were out of the jumbo so I didn't get to try. Since this is a vietnamese place is kind of odd they don't have pho, but they have plenty options. The kale salad is one of my favorites. The parking lot is spacious so plenty of free parking. We came in for lunch on a Thursday at 11:30. They were moderately busy but we were seated right away. The service throughout the meal was fairly good, we had to ask for water once. We ordered the pork egg rolls for our appetizer. These didn't have much flavor. For my meal I had the Country Fried Steak specialty. I was pleasantly surprised with Kale salad as it was fresh and good, which has not been my experience with kale salads. The mashed potatoes were ok, I liked the sausage bacon gravy but the steak not so much. It has a sweet flavor to it which I believe was from the meat marination. I typically take my leftovers to go but I didn't this time. Their country fried steak with bacon gravy is a must try if that's your thing. They also offer daily weekday specials, which includes their Cajun Fish Fry. The decor includes tables and booths, with a bar. They also have a dog friendly patio. They also include a drive-up to-go lane, which is huge for me. I work nearby and stop by for an early dinner before shift. The service is quick and attentive. Don't sleep on their chicken tenders or fries. Been here countless times and have a great experience every time! The servers are always sweet, the food is always delicious, and it's so cozy in there. If you do happen to sit on the left side of the restaurant (when you walk into the front door) make sure to bring a jacket, it's always colder on that side. This time around, I finally got around to getting the vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and added an egg roll. So delicious. My Aunt and I were craving Vietnamese food while on our trip! This was absolutely one of the best meals we had on our trip! Not visiting here on my own, only for social purposes. It's located in the heights so think of limited parking space. It's got sitting indoors and outdoors. Menu is a mix of both worlds, American and Vietnamese. They provided an accurate description, I quote "Vietnamese American gastropub with fusion dishes". This place offers the traditional banh mi, shaking beef rice, noodles but also fried chicken with gravy and biscuit and burgers and fries. The inside is surrounded by screens showing the beers offerings, many are local, which is awesome. Unfortunately, the most memorable for me was the off scent of the glass in which they served either water or beer. Some wet rag we think. Asked to bring a new one but it's a whole batch of that same wash cloth or I dunno. I also disliked the size of that lemon pepper dipping sauce. It's so tiny. It's the same size when you order the fried calamari. That burger is nothing to declare, borderline bland. Biggest positive touch of the evening is our waitress who checked on us regularly, joked and laughed with us, friendly staff! There are many competitors in this cuisine. For that reason, I'd venture elsewhere and wouldn't make a specific trip here unfortunately. read more

As a local, it took me way too long to try Hughie's. I guess I was a little hesitant because it didn't look like your traditional mom & pop viet shop, but more so an American bar/grill. So glad I decided to go for it because I love shaking beef (bo luc lac) and its so hard for me to find a reliable place that does it right where the meat is tender and soaks up flavor. Hughie's does a great job and I'll definitely come back just for this dish! We happened to stop by on a Sunday where they were also serving pho and that was pretty solid as well. My son, wife, and I really enjoyed our visit here. Love the Gastro pub atmosphere which is nice and down to earth and the awesome Asian Vietnamese fusion cuisine. It was great for a Friday night dinner. Would be great for a date night or a family. My son had the banh mi, my wife the vermicelli, and I had the pork belly special. All were great. Watch out for their tip procedure!!! I was handed their handheld device to choose the tip amount, for which I chose 20%. When I requested a printed copy for my records, I was extremely disappointed to discover they charged the tip based on the total bill amount (including tax!) rather than the subtotal. Taxes and government fees are not part of the goods or services the restaurant provides, so they shouldn't technically be included in the service reward. They have the classic dishes such as spring/egg rolls, vermicelli noodles, fried rice and rice platters, bang mi and their signature shaking "insert protein" (shaking chicken is my husbands go to dish here!). Their specialty dishes always come with their kale salad which might be my favorite thing on their menu. If you are a fan of kale salads, theirs is a must try! No ketchup. Doesn't almost everyone want ketchup with their fries? The gravy was barely enough for the chicken. To add insult, my fries were not hot. We've heard good things about Hughie's and finally checked it out with couple friends over the weekend. Located in the Heights, there are some parking available in the parking lots on either side of the building. The restaurant has plenty of inside and outdoor seating. We opted to sit outside since it was the perfect patio weather. The menu has a good mix of traditional Vietnamese cuisine and American brunch/lunch food. They also have many beer on draft. For slightly healthier options, we went with the grilled pork rice bowl with brown rice and the grilled pork vermicelli bowl. The flavors were solid and the portion were generous. I preferred the grilled pork in the rice bowl as it seems to have additional seasoning compared to the grilled pork in the vermicelli bowl. The staffs were friendly and dressed up for Lunar New Year. Overall this is a nice and chill place to hang out with friends especially if you can't quite decide what to eat. Parking is available on both sides of the restaurant. There is both indoor and outdoor seating (heat lamps available on patio), and good for both larger groups and kids/families. A very well-rounded restaurant I must say! Remember this is "bar food" so don't expect the entrees to blow you away. Food was decently priced but I thought they were just okay. Some of the meat in the vermicelli bowl was hard to eat and the dumplings and spring rolls were not much more than what I can make myself at home. Something notable were QUART sizes available for Thai tea and Vietnamese coffee - I'll be ordering these for takeout one day. Very busy during the work week lunch rush. The spring rolls aren't too bad, shaking everything on the menu. Seems to be a very popular type of dish. I'm used to the hole in the wall Pho establishments so to find out there is no pho only on the weekend was a bummer. The fried rice was ok, the classic burger was a little salty and something was definitely missing. The calamari pieces are small not a lot of flavor, and the shaking beef dish was pretty decent no wonder everyone orders that. Very Americanized if you want true authentic I guess go to pho Ben or pho Saigon. Beer selections were good, it's just confusing of what this place serves and what it truly is. Came here for the first time for my friend's BD dinner! This place was fully packed by the time we got here around 6:45 pm on Saturday night!!! Although the staff told us it will take 30 mins but we got our seats by 7 pm! My friends were telling me great things about this place so my expectations were pretty high and yes it was a good place!!! :) Since I didn't know I just ordered the fried rice but other friends did the speciality orders which were combinations of kale salads, seamed rice, seared tofu, garlic and onions!! We've lived within a mile of Hughie's but have never gone until today when we went with a couple of friends. On the outside, they have ample parking on 20th street and a nice outdoors patio with a few tables. The menu is simple with both traditional Vietnamese fare along with some American classics such as burgers, chicken fried steak, and tendies. We opted for the grilled pork steamed rice plate with brown rice and the grilled pork vermicelli noodle bowl. The pork is well marinated and flavorful and portions are good as well! The rice plate was my preferred out of the two; the pickled veggies + meat + rice + fish sauce was a solid combo that is also balanced. Service is good and the manager was very friendly as well.
