Brewery #399 I…read morestarted here on my brewery hopping day in Houston recently. Why did I start at Great Heights you ask? Because they open at 11am on Fridays! That may sound like no big deal; except they don't have a kitchen. They encourage day drinking. My people! I ordered a flight and they offer 6-beers in their flight. Again, my people! I got 3 different IPA's, a coffee stout, a kolsch, and a hefeweizen. I liked all of them but The Whammer hazy IPA was my favorite amongst them. The atmosphere was relaxed and chill. The place had a few people enjoying a pint while looking at spreadsheets on their laptop, another guy all decked out in spandex (it's more fun saying it that way then saying a cyclist) and a few couples. Lots of plants so my ladyfriend would dig it too. The music was perfect for me and it ranged from Zeppelin to Earth Wind and Fire to The Smokey and the Bandit theme. Definitely a spot I will repeat when I come to Houston and if I were a local, I would be a regular.

I don't know enough about beer to describe their offerings with any level of fairness but the coffee stout I had was really good and well worth the calories. Just a Tip, if you've never been to this area before, the south end of the brewery on Judiway Street is the unassuming end next to all the town homes and kids playing on the street, etc. so if you need to park, you need to go up one street where there is street and paid parking options and you'll see the other bars too.

So as I have said before it's a lot of fun to try these out when one of these bookmarked breweries can finally get tried out. Karbach Brewing was one of these breweries that were on this lengthy but steadily diminishing brewery list of mine. The beer that we had was a Kölsch beer by the name of Love Street. The flavor features to enjoy with this kölsch is a naturally sweet flavor along with a clean presence as well as a finish. The beer gives a slight warming feeling and is smooth in body. It's also very light bodied so not out of the realm of possibility of having more than one while hanging out. A very solid beer overall.

The space itself is very nice inside, the kind of brewery my girlfriend would like. It's bright, large windows, clean and lots of plants. They don't do flights on game days even if no one is in line and there are like 10 people in the brewery. The 1st time I came, this rule made sense but the second time they had damn near as many workers as customers. So, I have only tried 3 beers. A stout that I didn't care for and 2 IPA's that were pretty good. There is no food onsite and the 2 times that I was there, I didn't see a food truck either. They also offer free parking for the Astros games if you have a 15,00 tab so that alone is worth the visit.

It's in an industrial park like strip mall so it doesn't look like much from the outside. No food onsite that I could see. I ordered a flight when I got there and was pleasantly surprised to see they do 6 beer flights. Score! I ordered 2 stouts, 2 pilsners, and 2 IPA's. The Dark Artifact (stout) was my favorite, but the pilsners were a pleasant surprise. They were playing 90's hip hop (A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, De La Soul) at a chill volume. My kind of place.
