Had a wonderful, delicious lunch here on Halloween. We arrived at 1 pm and there was only one other party. During our stay, only one other food courier arrived for pick up. I hope this restaurant does well but ever since Aura left, this spot has been a revolving door. The staff are incredibly friendly and warm. The decor is a bit more modern than other places before it, especially considering the age of the building itself. Also a note, they do take Apple Pay but they do not take American Express. Offerings: - Volcano Roll: Such a fun and entertaining spectacle. The roll itself is simple and a bit one note, but still delicious. - Snow White Roll: A very simple roll, with less of all the sauces and extra toppings. The flavor of fish and rice really shine through here. Delicious! - Master Roll: exactly what you expect for an Americanized sushi restaurant. Covered in sauces and includes so many great textures and flavors.

Another fantastic meal. I think we have been here four times or so now! It's always a treat when we are in the area. Everything is so so so good, great recommendations, and fantastic hospitality. I truly love this place!

Chirashi Don and bento box

My friend and I dined here as we've both never been. It wasn't very busy, but the restaurant was clean and the waitress was friendly. I had the sesame chicken and sashimi bento box. It was delicious! The sesame chicken was freshly fried and crispy and the sauce wasn't overpowering. The salad was generously dressed, which I liked. The sashimi was fresh and fatty. My friend had the chirashi bowl and enjoyed it as well. I would return and recommend.

I stopped by here after a show and was seated right away. The woman I'm assuming was either the manager or owner and she was very friendly. She recommended a roll to me that was super tasty. I thought the prices are pretty average and I would've ordered more if I was hungrier but what I did get was very fresh. The ambiance is super casual and it seemed like there were some people calling to make reservations so I'm sure that's an option too. Overall I definitely recommend you check this place out. Definitely a hidden gem downtown!

Kumi Sushi is such a cute little neighborhood spot in Sacramento. I got the bento box and it was a really good deal for the price. The sushi tasted fresh and the rolls were solid -- average price is around $18, which isn't bad at all. The place itself is small but cozy, and the service was good. Everyone was friendly and quick. Overall, it's a nice spot if you're looking for fresh sushi without breaking the bank. I'd definitely come back!

If I could give 6 stars, I would! I had such a wonderful time with server , she were amazing ! My favorite bluefin backside , Every bite was delicious! Very refreshing! Love this restaurant!

This is one of my favorite neighborhood sushi places. This used to be Aura which was a Korean/Japanese restaurant. I've always loved the space, but I think this place is a better fit. The owner is always very nice and accommodating. We usually get a few chef nigiri specials. The agedashi tofu is good. Sunomono is solid. What I like best about this place is they have fish specials. This is a good sign for a sushi place versus a place that has a static menu. I really like this place and I'll keep coming back.

Second time trying Kumi; first time was for takeout and I had a pretty good roll, but I always planned to dine in before forming a full opinion. For the record, the takeout packaging was superb and really left an impression that they care about aesthetics and quality. Kumi is in a really unsuspecting spot. It's tucked into the heart of Mansion Flats, surrounded by houses and apartments, and doesn't seem like much from the outside. But when you walk in, you step into a cozy, beautifully designed space that feels like something you'd find in Japan. Everything from the service (one woman was running the whole floor and doing an amazing job) to the aesthetic details of their takeout containers to dishware feels intentional and thoughtful. The plates, chopsticks, teapot all showed care in their image. They say we eat with our eyes first and using beautiful vessels to serve things enhances the overall experience. We started with the daily special: Chutoro Carpaccio. I believe that's from the belly of the tuna. It was fatty and fresh, a real step up from my usual order of pepperfin. For my main, I ordered the Secret Box, which is like a mini omakase-style box featuring nine different styles of sushi chosen by the chef. I've found that "chef's choice" at many sushi restaurants can be a way to pass off cheaper fish at higher prices, but this was the opposite. The Secret Box was hands down the best sashimi I've ever had in my life and excellent value for money. I didn't ask what anything was and just went off taste, using my knowledge to identify the pieces later. From top left to bottom right: salmon, tuna, and yellowtail--each in its purest form, super fresh and vibrant. Second row: seared beef with spring onion, full of umami and buttery richness; scallop with a light citrus glaze, my favorite of the night with an absolutely phenomenal flavor and texture; and seared salmon with chili crunch, a fun bite with great textures. Bottom row: albacore served over lemon, refreshing and hefty; a clean white fish I believe was Hirame; and finally what I think was Escolar, which had a nice chew while still being soft, delicate, and rich. Not 100% sure but I think I nailed most of them. It was a fantastic experience and I'll definitely be back. This was the freshest, most beautifully presented, and flavorful sashimi I've had in Sacramento or anywhere else. I believe they also offer a full omakase experience, but for someone who's never done that before, the Secret Box was a great entry point into trying really excellent and fresh pieces of sashimi. It probably could have been shared between 2 people but then again I easily put it all away. If any restaurant deserves being in the next Michelin Guide update it's Kumi.

I was visiting Sacramento to see some friends and they took me to Kumi after I told them that I wanted some sushi. I was simply blown away by their selection and quality of fish; not to mention that it was all so affordable. Each piece of fish was buttery and sweet and it just melted in the mouth. I highly recommend getting their omakase so you can try all their premium fish. We also tried their sake and it was pretty cool that they let us pick our own sake glass. I'll definitely be back, next time I visit Sacramento. Kumi is simply amazing.

My second visit to Kumi and the quality remains the same. I love the truffle hamachi. The sauce pairs very deliciously with the hamachi...this is my "must order" item on future visits. I also enjoyed the shishito peppers with the spicy, peppery sauce. I cannot recall the name of the sushi roll...it was just okay. I prefer the assorted sashimi. It was very fresh and I enjoyed every bite. Kumi is definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants to visit.

Second order from Kumi. Both times, food arrived fresh. Sushi is very tasty. Tofu was tasty but needed to be more crispy. Packaged well and arrives looking good. Will order from Kumi again.

I got the chutoro nigiri and master roll. Very small servings for the price. The chutoro was fishy. The master roll tasted like any other roll. They skimp on the fish and the price is comparable to every other sushi spot. I came here for convenience but I rather make a drive.

One of my favorite restaurants changed and got this place earlier in the year. I didn't find out till recently. Daisy is the owner. So we went to check it out. The place is small and on the corner. They have street parking but in a downtown area may be hard to get at certain times. I found a spot a few doors down. I thought there was a line to get in but people were just standing at the corner talking. We didn't have a reservation and there were only a few tables of customers. Seated right away. We were greeted by Daisy and caught up a little. I wanted a sake and told her to get me something smooth. She brought me a Kikusui Funaguchi and it came in a small can. It was great and I liked it. I wanted to try the oysters but she was out. I would have to get them another time. I got the Chirashi Sushi. I wasn't disappointed , it was fresh and flavorful. Loved it. My wife tried the Agedashi tofu but it wasn't the same. It was like other places and she used to love the one Daisy had at her other restaurant. She said she could make it for my wife when she comes in again. Daisy said that the clientele here preferer this way. We got the garlic salmon which was good and tried one of the popular rolls a sake punch. It was pretty good and I liked it. A nice place and we will have to come back and try more food. Glad we found your place Daisy.

Came here for dinner a couple of times, the first time I ordered the rainbow roll ($15) which is my barometer for sushi at restaurants. Decently sized, the fish was fresh and the roll was filling. Daughter ordered the ramen ($18) with the red option, which she enjoyed with the plethora of toppings. Dinner the second time, I got the teishoku set with salmon ($21). Two decently filets of salmon came with rice, miso soup, salad, deep fried egg roll and salad. You also get a choice of either croquette or chawanmushi. The chawanmushi was a highlight for me! I missed eating this savory custard when I used to live in Japan. Their version did not disappoint! Double Toro roll 8/10 - my date loved it, I'm just not a big roll fan Spicy scallop hand roll 9/10 - super delicious, scallops were fresh Unagi hand roll - 10/10 - I didn't even get to try it, my date loved it Tuna maki roll - 10/10 - simple, delicious We will definitely be coming back. I will say my only note is that we ordered the appetizers first and actually waited to order our mains in hopes that the appetizers would come out first. Instead my mains came out before the appetizers and then my dates came after the appetizers came out. Everything was delicious but I hope that isn't a common habit as it made the meal feel a bit rushed and the waitresses were commenting about how much we ordered and if we could eat it all... everyone was very nice though. A little cold in the actual restaurant but makes sense to keep the fish cold.

*** Vegetarian Review ***…read more Would I come back? Yes, friendly service. They can accommodate their broths for vegetarians. If you can handle it, always ask for a medium spice level. Tips for first-timers: 1) Plenty of free parking 2) They accept reservations The Food: Vegetable Tempura ($18.95, Grade A): I like how they cut the vegetables--not too chunky. There is nothing worse than a chunky carrot that isn't cooked to its core. The tempura batter doesn't pull off when you bite into it, and it isn't oily at all. Yasai Ramen ($17.95, Grade A): Asked for a water broth to make this safe and vegetarian-friendly. You would think it would be tasteless, but it was surprisingly packed with flavor. The medium spice level definitely helped, but even for people sensitive to heat, this would be a tasty dish. It says water-based, but it still has a deep, eye-appealing dark color. The noodles have a great bite. Not overly mushy. And they stay that way for the entire meal. Broccoli, zucchini, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms, and cabbage. The cubed tofu is fresh and wasn't spoiled which often happens with tofu in restaurants that a lot of people don't order daily. Jungle Roll ($14.95, Grade A): Avocado and cucumber, topped with a seaweed salad. Most Japanese restaurants fail to understand that vegetarians also want a fun roll! We asked if they could include a vegetable tempura inside the roll so there would be a good textural component, and added a drizzle of teriyaki and spicy mayo. Good news--they were able to do it, though having to check with the sushi bar is always an adventure ($1 extra for each request). Sidenote: Why do all Japanese restaurants need to ask the sushi bar? One-hundred percent of the time, we eagerly have to wait for the sushi police to give a rolling. The rolls are made fresh and many meat-based rolls include a tempura element rolled inside. I could understand if we're asking to deep fry the roll, but just adding a tempura and a drizzled sauce? Ok, hopping off my soapbox. Bottom Line We've been coming to this place on and off for over ten years. It's been at least 2 years since our last visit, and there are some noticeable changes. Portions are smaller; the ramen bowls used to be the size of a food challenge. The restaurant itself is looking older and not quite as cared for, but the flavors remain excellent and the friendly, attentive service is completely unchanged.

My friend watched the waitress stack the 5 trays and left to process payment. Waitress returned and told them she was missing one payment. The party insisted that they all paid. There's security cameras in this room. Go review the footage and you can see the proof that we all paid and the waitress took the trays." Apparently the security cameras weren't functioning as he wouldn't look at the footage. The manager wanted to charge the missing payment to the person who used a charge card for her payment and the group told him that was not acceptable. The dispute went on for 30 minutes and customers at a near by table kept turning around and looking at us. The manager stepped away again and returned shortly with the missing payment saying that he found it under the cash register! There was no true apology, no effort to compensate the group for the embarrassing behavior and accusations. Clearly it was the waitress' mistake and she didn't apologize to the group. This is unacceptable behavior from the manager. Knowing this happened yesterday, I will no longer dine at Akebono. Very poor customer service.
