I initially did not intend of coming here since I am not a big shave ice person. We had extra time walking around Hilo so my family and I decided to stop by at Kula. This is a popular spot and for a good reason. As soon as I took my first bite I knew I was tasting some good stuff. Their shave ice is soft and fluffy! I chose The Local, passion fruit and soursop with coconut cream. Their passion fruit and soursop flavours tasted so good! Not artificial tasting (although I am sure they use syrups), but flavours made the right way. Coconut cream on matched so well with the fruity flavours! The Rainbow was equally awesome with mini mochis, and the macadamia ice cream was so rich, creamy, but not heavy. Highly recommend this place! read more

The initiated will always tell you that you really haven't had Hawaiian shaved ice until you're in Hawaii and boy did I realize how right they were when I tried "The Local" at Kula Shave Ice, a modest establishment by the local open market that packs as big of a punch on your taste buds as well as it packs its shaved ice desserts. A combination of lilikoi (my new favorite fruit flavor) and soursop organic syrups, "The Local" isn't too sweet but also packs in just the right amount of flavor - not unlike a really good homemade ice cream is as opposed to the mass manufactured ones. With a dollop of haupia cream on the top, I knew I had tried something that was, dare I say it, sublime. I almost want to revisit Hilo just to go here again. read more

This is no ka oi! If in Hilo you must stop here. Organic and real fruit juice! We had a raspberry, mango and pineapple with a brain (vanilla ice cream). A regular is big! Two can split! If one person get the keiki size for sure. Nice benches in front to enjoy your shaved ice. On saturdays the farmers market is in full Swing. Lots of local food, clothes, jewelry to buy. Local music being played on patio. So relaxing, dont want to leave! read more

When in Hilo Kula Shave Ice is a must! Fresh fruit, earth friendly, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavoring. It's so refreshing, fruity, yummy! We shared an adult size of Kula Rainbow. It was more than enough for two people. The yelp check in offer was get one free topping. We passed on the topping and got $1 off instead. They are eco friendly too! They offer free reusable straws (save the turtles!), and the option to use their stainless steel spoons instead of plastic (just be sure to return the stainless steel spoons). Yum. Yum. Small counter shop just at entrance of the hilo Farmers market. Plenty of options to chose from. Customize your shave ice with enormous options. My wife went with an ice-cream option and it was best ever we had. Just loved it. Server at counter was very nice too. Must try little shop. read more

Being one of the few places that open on Sunday, I've never really thought of this place until recently. My friends decided to grab some acai bowls and shave ice after a hot day at the beach. It's a little shack, connected to other food stores. It's located in a little area conveniently next to the Farmer's Market. Parking was never really an issue for me except on Wednesdays and Saturdays when the it becomes a "full" Farmer's Market. There are quite a bit of street parking or two parking lots for Farmer Market shoppers. Worse comes to worse is to walk a block down for a spot. Since I wasn't really craving any sweets and was a bit full, I decided to try their acai poi smoothie. My friends got the kula acai bowl and chocolate shave ice. The smoothie was just alright. It was thick due to the poi, but I didn't find anything special about it that stood out. I never got to try the chocolate shave ice, but I did try the kula acai bowl. It was really really good. It actually exceeded my expectations. When my friends got their order, it was interesting seeing papaya as their topping rather than the normal strawberries. It had bananas, granola, and honey. Additionally, they had a peanut butter drizzle AND macadamia nuts sprinkled on top. Now that's new. Who puts peanut butter in an acai bowl? When I tried a bite, dang. It was really good. Lots of flavor in your mouth and the peanut butter meshed so well that it was crazy. It made me want one for myself. If I ever crave an acai bowl, I'll definitely come back for their kula acai bowl. Kula Shave Ice is in downtown Hilo, right next to the Hilo Farmer's Market. Their shave ice is absolutely delicious! They use homemade syrups and special water to freeze their ice apparently. We ordered the Local - lilikoi and soursop with whipped coconut cream on top as well as a customized strawberry and pineapple. I LOVED the coconut whipped cream - so good. All the flavors tasted fresh and yummy, but my fave was the soursop. read more

Kinda busy place right next to Hilo farmers market. Shave ice was delicious and came in big portions. Hits just the right spot during a hot afternoon. If you are in the area it's a great rest spot. They have restrooms too! read more

Best shave ice I have had on any island, and I have tried many. So good I went back to have one for lunch on my last day here visiting family. Perfection for me is coconut & pineapple with vanilla ice cream. Not too sweet, just perfect. After one bite I no longer cared that they didn't offer adzuki beans. They also have a fantastic Vietnamese iced coffee, once again not too sweet. Looking forward to coming back! read more

Talk about spreading aloha in life...get anything with the haupia cream to make your heart smile. Seriously...the haupia cream is so good! It might not be for everyone but try something new! Haupia like it. We got the Lava Flow and the Local which has both. The lilikoi butter on the Lava Flow is friggin amazing too! You won't be disappointed. We were staying in Kona trying to find good shave ice and we are so glad we waited almost a whole week to get some authentic good stuff. What I love about this place is just the location. It's right by a farmers market with fresh fruits and veggies with local vendors selling clothes and what not. I recommend this place 110% and next time we are back on the island, I will definitely make the trip out to Hilo for this place and the farmers market! read more

Yelp did it again. We were looking for shave ice, not to be confused with shaved ice and found Kula. It checked all the boxes and more. Organic Homemade syrups Delicious We had the rainbow shave ice that is served on top of Tahitian vanilla ice cream. It was so decedent. For an ice cold sweet treat, stop and order yourself a shave ice here. We got a couple of kid-sized portions both with pineapple and lilikoi, one with snowcap. In retrospect, we could have one normal size and save a couple of dollars, but I wasn't thinking too clearly, lol. They are earth conscious - compostable bowls and reusable stainless steel spoons they WASH, not trash. They also use real fruit flavours, not old school syrups - another plus. There is a farmers market nearby on Weds, so be sure to take that in as well. Lots to see! read more

A MUST have everytime we're at the farmer's market. I would have ice shave for breakfast if I could . Their flavor combinations are pretty good but, if that's not your thing then you can create your own. There was live music last time we were there m, that was cool. Made the drive from Kailua-Kona to this place. I was really excited about having the haupia cream on top. I didn't know it was organic flavors until I tried the shave ice. It was a whole different experience having the shave ice with syrup made from fruit instead of the artificial syrup. Loved the flavors. I got half lava flow and half guava lava. It was super delicious. Having the haupia cream on top was amazing. Its rare to find other places that also put their own cream on top. Only other place I know is Wailua Shave Ice on Kauai. The shave ice here is AMAZING!! We heard from friends who went the day before and highly recommended this spot as their favorite shave ice place. It's located next to the market and has a few picnic tables outside. Parking here is street only but turnaround is pretty frequent since most people are shopping and leaving. We ordered the Local with Soursop and Lilikoi with Haupia Cream on top. We added Mac Nut Ice Cream inside but honestly it was amazing as is without the ice cream scoop in the middle. We LOVED the Haupia Cream and there was enough to get a little with every bite. It was perfectly creamy and the flavor was amazing with the shave ice. I am not a fan of artificial shave ice syrups and was so impressed that this spot makes their own with real fruit. You can really taste the difference! The ice is also sooo soft. Prices may seem a little high but the quality is outstanding. Will have to be back to try more flavors next time! read more

This was my favorite shaved ice on my recent Big Island trip. I got the lava flow which comes with strawberry shaved ice top with haupia cream and lilikoi butter! It was definitely a game changer from all the shaved ice I had previously. Smacked in the middle of Hilo Farmers Market, I wish I knew about Kula sooner so I can try more items from their menu. It was the perfect way to end our Big Island trip and I can't wait to come back. As I'm writing this review I just found out there's also a location at Oahu's North Shore. I'm very sad because we were actually in Oahu for a few days after Big Island. read more

Quick service and causal. Has outdoor picnic tables. It might be an unpopular opinion, but the shave ice didn't have much flavor :( also ordered iced latte and didn't have much coffee flavor which they were honest upfront and refunded me. Love this place!! This location is by the farmers market and is such a nice treat after walking around in the sun. I usually just go for the pre-made combos but feel free to make your own concoctions. I think one of the combos that we wanted didn't have ice cream so we got the combo and added ice cream for an extra fee. The price is a little more than other places but the syrups are organic and made from fresh ingredients. There's a keiki and regular size and the regular is more than enough to share between 2-3 people. read more

Incredible spot - I've had a large amount of the menu here and it really just hits the spot perfectly, lava flow (lilikoi butter, haupia cream, strawberry syrup), kula rainbow (blueberry, strawberry, mango over vanilla ice cream), are insanely good for shaved ice. Kula bowl hits the spot for acai, acai cone is a nice ice cream alternative, and the matcha latte/maple cinnamon latte are great coffee options. This place is definitely a must stop, walkable/next to Hilo's Farmer Market, definitely my favorite shaved ice spot on Big Island, and one of the best for acai bowls as well! read more

One of the best shave ice places I've tried in Hawaii. I ordered the lava flow, which is uses a strawberry syrup on the ice, haupia cream, and lilikoi butter. I also added handmade mochi, one of my favorite toppings on shave ice and absolutely delicious here. The line can get long (still pretty fast service) in the middle of the day once it gets hot, but I went in the morning at around 9:30am during the farmers market and there was no wait at all! read more

For me, a trip to Hawaii is incomplete without shave ice. I am so glad I stopped by Kula Shave Ice to satisfy my craving and make my trip even more memorable. The menu is easy to navigate. You can big one of the set combinations or go wild with your creativity and create your own. I chose the regular size with lilikoi and soursop with condensed milk. The regular is big enough to share between two people. The service is great here and there are a few tables right in front of the shop. Depending on the day you go, there is a farmer's market that takes place. read more

I had low expectations due to it's proximity to the touristy trinket shops but boy was I surprised. We ordered the Lilikoi Dreamsicle, Lava Flow, and Kula Rainbow. Unfortunately, they had run out of Lilikoi butter for the Lava Flow so they substituted it with mochi. The flavors were amazing and the shave on the ice was the perfect consistency. WOW. I am not a shave ice person and this is incredible. I'm pretty sure it's homemade syrups or purées or juice because it tasted so fresh. I can't speak highly enough. We visit our friends in Hilo every few years. This summer when we came, we were on a search for the next best thing when it came to shaved ice and this is bar none the most excellent choice. Located by the markets downtown, it looks like a shop we would see at home in Portland. Cute side stand brimming with colors and drawings. Everything was laid out neatly on the counter with countless customizations. You could get shaved ice, açaí bowls, or drinks. Simply amazing. Lilikoi was tangy and smooth, strawberry purée was so refreshing and light, haupia creme was like slurping on a cloud. Quality ingredients you could taste. The server even gave my kids some stickers while we were waiting at the picnic tables nearby. Very fast service and great presentation. We went almost daily after our first time. Kula Shave Ice’s mission is to serve the healthiest and most delicious shave ice - without all the dyes, artificial flavors and preservatives used in "traditional" flavorings. We make all our syrups with organic mostly local fruit and use compostable packaging. It's shave ice you can feel good about!

Meet the Business Owner: Tiffany G.

Tiffany and Luke Golden started this business because they were concerned about the unhealthy ingredients in "traditional" shave ice and wanted to offer people (and their own kids) a healthy alternative. They make everything using organic fruit, organic sugar or honey, and alkaline water. No dyes, artificial flavors or preservatives. Taste the difference!

There are multiple species that you don't ever see outside of Hawaii or often at least. Was happy to know that I'll never see an avocado of this size in Alaska, but it still made me sad because it did taste delicious.

Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.
